And this is how Max Headroom’s 7″ Single — “Merry Christmas Santa Claus” b/w “Gimme Shades” — came to underwhelm all of us in 1986.

William Friedkin passed away on 7 August 2023, at the age of 87, and left behind a body of work – and a reputation – that was unlike anyone else in Hollywood. William was fairly notorious, both for his talent and his odd behavior, and in some ways, this is probably the perfect tribute to a man who could be so polarizing.

18.) The Steve Roberts Interview: “Hollywood Is A Weird Place”

In this jam-packed, special episode of 20 Minutes Into The Future, we get the story of the various kinds of work Steve Roberts has done, going back to the early 70’s, and covering some of the work he’s done since Max Headroom. There are so many stories and incredible moments from his past that we couldn’t possibly fit it all into one episode, but instead, consider this a 90 minute introduction to a fascinating man, who just so happened to have written Max Headroom, too. This episode pairs very well with our interview featuring the life of Michael Cassutt, and as mentioned in the body of this show, a lot more detail appears in our panel discussion, featuring three of the key players in the US Show Creative team: Brian Frankish, Michael Cassutt & Steve Roberts. All three of them paint a much more complete picture of the US Show and how it came to be, and I think you can read between the lines just enough to get a sense of the story behind the story, too.

17.) Circle Takes The Square (Netflix S2E7, “Friend Zoned…”)

In this episode we discuss the Netflix reality TV program, The Circle, this time, a show that Heather knows very well, and Austin has never seen before. Everything’s backwards this time, but these two manage to still find some way of engaging the content, just like they would otherwise.

Heather introduces Austin to one of her favorite Reality TV Show.

16.) Babies: How Children Are Represented In, “Max Headroom.” (A Discussion Regarding The Supreme Court’s Decision To Strike Down, ‘Row v. Wade.’) 

In this episode we have a conversation framed by the way that babies are represented in “Rakers” and in “Baby Grobags.” Specifically: how these two episodes speak volumes about the actual future we face now that Row v. Wade has been rescinded. This is a serious political conversation, and the funny editing during the serious sections has been reduced because of this. While the conversation does reference Max occasionally, it is largely about our new political reality, which happens to resemble the horrors we see in this fictional TV show.

Heather cannot separate the issue from the art.

11.) We’re Watching Screens of Them Watching Screens (Watch Party 1 – Channel 4 Telefilm Commentary Track)

In this episode, we present recordings from the evening of our first watch party, where you can listen along like it is a commentary track for the Channel 4 Telefilm, “Max Headroom.” Essentially: 20 Minutes Into The Future does RiffTrax, and YOU ARE THERE.

If you would like to watch along, you might want to use this link, as we cannot include more than samples from the original telefilm in this presentation. With that in mind, you will want to use the three “beeps” that are included in this episode, to synch your video and audio. As you are listening to this podcast, enjoy the opening, as we spend about seven minutes setting the stage for what you will hear.

After that, you will hear two short beeps and one, longer beep. (Sort of like a filmstrip, from when we were kids.) The Michael Cassutt Interview: “Follow Your Interests”

Join us for a conversation with Michael Cassutt, a television producer and writer who has pursued a very unique career path, largely so he can keep writing science fiction and fantasy stories of one variety or another. In this show, we get the full dirt on breaking into writing, how he got on at The Twilight Zone, how that led to working on Max Headroom, and where his career led him after that.

Still active, still writing, and most recently working as a novelist and non-fiction writer, Michael is a wonderful person to chat with, and we had a delight getting to know him.

As we discovered: this was a bit of a reunion for these three, and it was a pleasure to have made it happen, while also getting a little Hollywood gossip on what happened behind the scenes. “Max Headroom” was a short-lived science fiction program with a dark sense of humor and a wicked take on what the future might be like. And, in a very strange turn of events, much of this future happened to become the world we now live in. This ironic twist has not only led to making the dark comedy of this program even darker, but has led to a new podcast, “20 Minutes Into The Future,” where Heather & Austin (two radio nerds) review and discuss these ironies. Now, they get to aim this conversation directly at the creators of the program. 

Writer, Director and Producer Steve Roberts, best known for writing “Max Headroom,” and “Hercules,” as well as developing the Canadian program, “Redwall,” is a charming English gentleman with a wonderful laugh and a very sardonic view of the horrors that technology can offer.  

Novelist, writer and producer Michael Cassutt produced shows like “Z-Nation,” “Strange Luck,” “Eerie, Indiana” and “The Twilight Zone,” as well a having written dozens of scripts for a number of shows. He also worked closely with Steve Roberts on “Max Headroom,” and is a bit of a NASA nerd in his spare time.  

Producer and Director Brian Frankish, who worked on films like “Strange Brew,” “The Last Starfighter,” “The Fugitive,” and “The Crazies,” and relevant to this particular conversation, was the producer on “Max Headroom,” that helped bring Steve & Michael’s stories to the small screen. 

In this panel conversation facilitated via digital communication tools, three of the people who envisioned the future that we all now live in will reminisce, and discuss what it was like to develop this vision. Join us for an hour-long discussion about what it was like to work in the television trenches of the late ’80’s, and listen in to stories about bucking the system and working within it.

“Max Headroom,” was anti-television, anti-corporate power, anti-advertising, and anti-globalism, and yet, was produced by some insightful and adept members of the Hollywood community, who were not afraid to thumb their noses at the establishment. Now, this is our chance to introduce this brand of nose-thumbing to a new generation.

Martin is the driving force behind The Cleaners From Venus, but his solo albums are just as inventive and whimsical, attracting the likes of Andy Partridge to work on producing for him.

capturedtracks.com has reissued Martin’s solo albums, and a new edition of “The Off White Album” hit stores YESTERDAY.

In this conversation, we discuss this reissue, the impending documentary about his life, and plenty of other bits and bobs throughout the half-hour.

This is actually a 30 minute edit of an 80 minute conversation, that will come out on the show this summer. But for now, you can enjoy this version, where you get to watch Martin Go-Go Dance for the camera, as well as get pumped while you wait for your copy of “The Off White Album” to land on your doorstep.

It was a really honor to speak with Martin, and he is as wonderful as his albums and songs. 36 years ago, Channel 4 in the UK took a chance on a very unusual 60 minute “telefilm,” that was to offer the backstory for their new “digital presenter,” who would be showing 13 weeks of music video programing later that Spring and Summer.

What began as an experiment in testing out “cyberpunk” on broadcast television, became “Max Headroom,” who ran rampant through our culture as he moved from mainframe to mainframe, infecting us with the same kind of digital buoyancy that we were all looking for in the late 80’s. First, Max took over in the UK, then moved on to Cinemax and then, finally, improbably, on ABC television, and from there, he went global. After three years of massive exposure in nearly every medium, and becoming one of the world’s most preeminent cola salesmen, Max suddenly vanished… and little has been seen of him since.

Almost 40 years later, it really does seem like Max’s files may have finally gone to the Purge Directory on our cultural network mainframe.

“20 Minutes Into the Future” is a podcast hosted by Heather & Austin, who plan to track and chart the history of this incredible character, and review some of the media that inspired it. The Pilot episode will air March 21st, and the second episode – where they discuss the BBC telefilm, will air exactly 36 Years after the original program aired. A fitting beginning for a show that wants to look at all the details, and figure out what they mean.

Heather is a radio veteran, who currently hosts The Sound of Tomorrow with her co-host, Ross Johnson. Heather is in the demographic for it, and yet, has never seen a lick of Max Headroom. All of this will be new, as she is introduced to this material for the first time.

Austin is a radio nerd and musician, and a big “Max Headroom” fan. Austin discovered the show in the Spring / Summer of 1987, and watched it relentlessly until the show disappeared from the airwaves in 1988. This experience has left him wanting more, and he has revisited this show several times since then. This time, Austin will be taking a more academic look at the series, using Heather’s first-time perspective to help dig deeper into the material’s social dynamics as they are presented.

Join them, every two weeks, as they discover the world of Max Headroom, and find that living 20 Minutes Into The Future is actually eerily like living today.
