Obama’s disappearing act: What happened to the president he wanted to be? All talk, no walk, no prior accomplishments:

The law journal editor without a published article, the lawyer without a well-known case to his credit, the law professor whose learning was agreeably presented without a distinctive sense of his position on the large issues, the state senator with a minimal record of yes or no votes, and the U.S. senator who between 2005 and 2008 refrained from committing himself as the author of a single piece of significant legislation: this was the candidate who became president in January 2009.

He just fell into it, and will be known for very little. Judging him by his so-call accomplishments since taking office, it's a good thing too.

From The Era Of Giant Chain Stores Is Over — And They've Ruined America:

The chain stores won not only because they flung money around — sometimes directly into the wallets of public officials — but because a sizeable chunk of every local population longed for the dazzling new mode of commerce. "We Want Bargain Shopping" was their rallying cry.

Although, I agree this sentiment was part of the reason, it does not tell the whole story. The fact is many things needed for daily life were unavailable in rural America. I recall driving 100 miles to buy school supplies every year. Also, the local business owners often acted like they were doing everyone a big favor, and were the hated assholes who controlled the town. They charged too much. (Obviously the author was never poor in this wonderful utopia.) They didn't pay shit either, so who cared if they went out of business? They deserved it.
