OK, Jeff and I did something a little different last night. Instead of recording a full blown cast we did a short (for us) writing update. We talked about our NaNo/MGUWC stories and gave some more info on the Maximum Geek Utlimate Writing Challenge and why we’re doing it. I’m going to do something a little different and summarize our answers for the two questions we get the most about MGUWC. In cas you aren’t up for the 38 minute cast.

Question #1: “What’s the point, NaNo is already long enough to build a habit.”

Answer: Most of the people I know who do NaNo write their 50,000 words and quit. Some of them quit halfway through a story. I know very few people who keep writing (or even editing) after NaNo is over. The MGUWC is about keeping up that habit all year long. That’s why we have different target word counts. Not everyone can write 2,000 words everyday. For the MGUWC the point isn’t how much but that you take the time to write something, anything, EVERY day, not just every day for a month.

Question #2: “What’s different about MGUWC from NaNoWriMo, is it just longer?”

Answer: There are several differences. Probably the largest (besides length) is what you can write. This isn’t just for novelists. You can write poetry, journal entries, blog posts anything that involves writing counts. The other difference is editing and rewriting count. We haven’t quite figured out how to handle a metric for that though. MGUWC is about options.

Alright, now that those important questions are answered, go listen to the cast, we go into more detail about the point of MGUWC and why it grew from something just Jeff was doing into a challenge for anyone.

Well here is the latest installement after a 10 month hiatus we’re back. We talk tech, movies and TV but mostly writing. Sit back, take your shoes off and prepare for 1 hour and 21 minutes of Maximum Geek. Or as I like to call it, 1.21 gigawatts. There’s a bit of wonkiness with the audio, Jeff cuts out a bit (we blame his netbook) and while our volume levels are pretty close, I am a bit louder, just loud enough to cause a bit of distortion if I really get up there. Anyway (notice the lack of an s, there is no such word as anyways) here’s the topic list.

Windows 7

The Nook

Random stuff

NaNoWriMo

Maximum Geek’s Ultimate Writing Challenge

More info on that last bit is coming soon. If you’re interested in the challenge give us a yell, @maxgeek on twitter or email challenge@maximumgeek.org. The more people who join us the more fun it will be.

On the topic of future episodes, there will be some, a schedule has yet to be decided though, we’ll keep you informed. If you’re not following us on twitter, you should. We actually post there once in a while.

Jeff took a mental health day, he’s trying to ween himself off politics. So Rick Cartwright joins me. Rick has been a friend of ours for quite a while and he’s guested on at least one prior episode of Max Geek (back in our trying to do live shows stage). Rick was originally set to join us as the moderate conservative view for our political discussion (which he does at the end). We got kind of carried away with what was supposed to be 15 or 20 minutes of tech talk, well at least half the show ended up being about tech.

There is another milestone, this is the first to be continued Max Geek. Rick and I just ran out of time and we were just getting started on politics. Next week sometime Rick and I will do a mini Max Geek Political cast to wrap things up. Without further ado I bring you the Max Geek 25 show notes.

Alright, it’s that time of the month again, this is the Writerly cast. Before I get down to the show notes though I wanted to mention (to those of you just following the podcast feed) that I’ve started doing a lot of actual blogging on Maximum Geek. I’m trying to cover a range of topics like we do on the podcast, so put the full feed http://www.maximumgeek.org/feed/ into your RSS reader and check it out. Now down to the show notes. This was a pretty simple cast.

Part 1: Where Jeff and I ad-lib trust me, it gets interesting once we get the silly out

Part 2: Jeff and I discuss marketability and what it’s place is in the writing process (hint: Jeff is wrong)

Along the way we also talk a bit about motivation and why Jeff isn’t writing any fiction lately. Good stuff, take a listen and give us some feedback, we actually are interested in what our listeners think, honest. And I know you’re out there, we use up plenty of bandwidth each month. So come on down and tell us what you think. Also spay or neuter your pets (a mention in next weeks podcast to the first person who can explain that last line email me).
