2011 Project#2: Parrot Play gym & toys

Just started my parrot play gym project for my lovebird, also making an extra for my Pets Parrot Club Malaysia Logo Competition lucky voter. I'll list the item need and step by step on how you guys to build it. Its an easy job but quite messy and lot of time consuming. So let get started.

Item needed:

Wood piece ( 2-3 size of wooden perch, its kind of hard to acquire so I make my own.)
Wood block
Sand paper (100grit, 600grit & 1000grit)

Steel nail
Steel screw
Coconut fiber rope
nylon rope
Food Coloring

Tools:
Hammer
Wood Saw
Wood file
Hobby knife
Glove and eye protection
working bench

Start with cutting the wood according to your design, to make the wood stick round cut each corner with the hobby knife, I'm using ½" x ½" x 72" wood, cut the corner until I get hexagonal shape and then I sand it until it became what I want.

This pre-cut wood, I arranged to make the ladder. The measurement is 12" Height with 5 step.

Sanding some wooden block to make the toys.

Adding food coloring is advisable so bird can safely chew it. Place the desire wood blocks or pieces into a steel cooking pot with tap water. Add the desire color according to intensity you want then boil it. Let it sit for about 5-10 minute after it has boiled so the color can be absorb by the wood thus make it permanent then let it dry under the sun for 2-3 days.

Penerangan & sesi soal jawab bersama Perhilitan Negeri Melaka.

Salam sahabat sekalian,

Kelmarin saya menghadiri Sesi Penerangan & Soal Jawab di PERHILITAN, Melaka. Masih Banyak yang belum confirm tapi yang confirm bayaran lesen untuk protected species memang meningkat, bilangan burung/haiwan dalam satu lesen mungkin kekal 10 ekor untuk 1 spesis mungkin kurang atau mungkin 1 ekor/spesis.

Akta 716 akan berkuat kuasa sepenuhnya pada akhir Jun 2011. Akta berkenaan mengandungi 7 jadual daripada akta sebelumnya yang hanya mempunyai 5 jadual sahaja. Di tambah pula dengan Spesis2 dari CITES dan spesis katak, ular, serangga, hybrid, kura2, tarantula dan cicak gecko.

Haiwan/Burung Hybrid@kacukakan secara automatik termasuk dalam akta baru ini. So kalau sape sape ada hybrid berhati-hatilah. Hybrid ni bukan maksudnya Hybrid warna tapi hybrid dari dua jenis spesis atau genetic berbeza contoh Fisher/masked lovebird + peachface... atau macam OSPE buat Lovebird + CAG... hehehehe...

Murai Kampung akan terkeluar dari akta kerana banyak complain dari orang ramai... so boleh bela tanpa lesen... Pemilik CAG/TAG perlu Declare/istihar di PERHILITAN sebelum akhir JUN 2011, sebab CAG/TAG dah masuk dalam Akta.

Pemilik Barau-Barau, Tanau, Puling di nasihatkan melepaskan kembali burung2 tersebut atau boleh menyerahkan kepada PERHILITAN. Sebab diorang ni totally protected dan kalau kantoi memang tak berbaloi la nak bayar denda yang baru ni.... mungkin boleh apply Permit khas menyimpan kot??

Semua pemilik burung/haiwan dalam jadual protected kena tag burung/haiwan peliharaan masing2... kalau burung pakai gelang dan lain2 kena pakai microchip. gelang dan microchip akan di supply oleh Pihak PERHILITAN.

Banyak jugak la info2 lain tapi tak berapa nak ingat la... sebab saya dengar part2 burung je... ramai jugak la pakcik-pakcik otai yang macam tak berpuas hati... tapi nak buat macam mana dah undang2.... mungkin lepas ni akan ada lagi sesi macam ni kat tempat korang sebelum hujung JUN 2011..

Homemade Hand feeding Formula By Maxshinoda

Hi,

I just want to share with all bird/parrot enthusiasm on how I made my own hand feeding formula. It is so easy all you need is:

*1st stage baby food of your choice. (make sure it contain no milk ingredient, I use Nestle Cerelac wheat & honey)

*Kellog's Cornflake preferably. (other brand is also suitable but make sure you read the ingredient part)

*Food Processor/Grinder.

*Food scale.

*Air tight sealed container for keeping the formula.

Firstly clean and disinfect the working area/surface and wash your hand with soap, Good hygiene is Important to prevent bacteria infestation and health issue. Make sure everything is clean and dry because moisture can damage the formula.

Weight the baby food and the cornflake to the ratio of 60:40 for 100gram of formula. That mean 40 grams of cornflake to be mix to 60 grams of baby food. Fill up the food processor with the weighted cornflake and grind it to powder as powderer as possible, then mix the powdered cornflake to the baby food in the clean sterilized air tight container.

Give it a shake until both ingredients is well mixed. I usually make the formula in 500 grams, so it will be not so much waste if my bird wean earlier. You can alter the Ratio as you like but I find this is the best Ratio because the cornflake has higher fat, mineral and vitamin than the baby food. If you are good with mathematic you can calculate how much fat, mineral and all the essential vitamin that will be use per feeding according to the diet facts on the box of the ingredients.

every other day I'll add 75mg of avian multi-vitamin to the formula to ensure my chick get all the needed nutrients.

Mix the formula with warm water about 60°C (never use hot boiling water because the formula contain digestive bacteria). Mix the formula thinner for young chick and thicker for older chick. Every hand feeder has to follow their own instinct on how thin or thick the formula consistency, be confident... if don't, please do not hand feed your pet bird it surely will cause death of an innocent pet life.

Hope you enjoy making your own homemade hand feeding formula without spending much on expensive brand formulas and still get the same result. Berry Lovebird Journal #2

After 30 days I've been hand rearing the lovebird chick, made some improvements and gain new experiences. today he is almost about to fully wean, but I still give him some formula in the morning and evening. In between that he eat what I left him with (pellet + seed mix and some vegies).

Memang kelakar la masa dapat idea ni.... tengah berak pulak tu!!! masa tengah "melepas" tetiba pewangi automatik tu spray pewangi terus aku dapat idea... tandas memang tempat untuk berfikir dan mendapatkan ilham... hahahahaha...

Idea ni sebenarnya boleh aku pakai untuk upgrade mesin IN-Q BREEDER supaya boleh pusingkan telur secara automatik. Dah siap ada timer pulak tu... 15 minit, 30 minit atau 1 jam... Tapi kena korban la pewangi automatik kat rumah aku... kalau nak tahu macam mana aku buat... Stay Tune

Full wings feathers and upper head... white-faced just like his mom..

22 days old now... nothing much but I can see there been a lot of feathers growing and the legs are quite strong because Berry now know how to perch. He also been eating some pellet that I offered. I also offered some seed but he still unable to crack them... He love his formula to be thinner, if I make the formula thicker he will refuse it and walk away. I can see now he is developing and growing, can't wait to train him to make some trick... grow faster Berry...

Finally I've finished the 2 in 1 incubator & brooder for my parrot breeding project. Already started to design ver 2.0 with auto egg turning.

Capacity = 30 to 40 Small to Medium Parrot Eggs.

Voltage = 240V/10A

Power consumption = 50W

Incubation = Force air

Controller & Monitoring = 240V Digital Thermostat with 4 programmable function.

Controller tolerances = -50°C to 99°C

Temperature Deferent = 0.3°C to 10°C

Accuracy = ±1.0°C

IN-Q BREEDER

After almost 2 years I've stop keeping pets, I think this is the best time to make a come back. I've decide to build an incubator / brooder for my parrot breeding project. At first I try to use mosquito mat heater, but it wasn't hot enough to heat up the incubator / brooder. then I found my Exoterra Night Glo and mounted the bulb using a ceramic bulb holder.

As for the Incubator body I used a three tier book cabinet, clear acrylic sheet for the door, push magnet cabinet hinge, a 12V PC fan, 240V to 5V power transformer ( modified from a phone USB charger), a digital thermometer, and a digital thermostat.

1st trial using ceramic mosquito mat heater... but failed.

the savior... 40w Exoterra Night Glo... less than a minute heater functionality.

Power up the In-Q Breed....

This is only on the testing stage for layout & design. The actual IN-Q is waiting for some item to arrive from ebay.. Stay tune

Berry Journal #1 : Peach Faced Lovebird (Agapornis Roseicolli)

Its been day 5, I've looked after my newly bought baby lovebird. His age is bout 17 days old today and starting hand feeding on day 12. The feeding schedule is 4 times a day at about 5-7 gram of formula per feeding. Had to bring along to work because nobody is at home on working hour. Here some photos of the baby lovebird..

Brooder Setup

Semalam cuti, lepak-lepak kat rumah takde ape nak buat, perasan pulak akuarium plastik kat rak simpanan tetibe je dapat idea nak buat "brooder" untuk anak lovebird yang bakal tiba tak lama lagi. Apalagi!! aku ajak la orang rumah pegi shopping kat GIANT area rumah aku, alang-alang boleh la beli lauk untuk masak tgh hari sekali.

Hari tu dah baca kat tenet mcm mana nak setup, so aku pun beli la paper towel ngan shelf liner. sampai rumah je terus setup....

Bahan-bahannya puan-puan:

masukan paper towel secukup rasa, dan potong shelf liner mengikut citarasa. Bubuh je dalam akuarium plastik.

Haaaa.... kan dah siap... ni setup bodoh-bodoh je doh...

balance shelf liner tu boleh buat alas macam ni, nanti masa nak suap makanan untuk anak burung dah ada alas....

Lepas setup, ngam-ngam pulak orang rumah habis masak.... pergh sambal udang + kacang boncis + jering + sambal belacan = mavelessssss...

minggu depan kalau anak burung sampai aku sambung citer ni.....

Saltwater Aquarium Guide

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

Difficulty: Easy

· Three Buckets

· Hydrometer And Testing Jar

· Dechlorinated water

· Thermometers

· Plants

· Mildewcide Or Bleach

· Heater

· Distilled Water

· Decorations

· Tank

Step 1

Check the tank for leaks.

Step 2

Clean the tank with a solution of 1 tsp. pure bleach for every 5 gallons of water. Scrub the tank, plastic plants, decorations and rocks. Rinse everything thoroughly several times with clean water.

Step 3

Install the filtration system. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully since models vary in their installation.

Step 4

Wash the substrate thoroughly before you put it in the tank. Figure on 1 lb. of gravel per gallon the tank holds.

Step 5

Put the plants in, anchoring the bottoms in the substrate.

Step 6

Fill a large bucket with clean, dechlorinated water.

Step 7

Using a hydrometer (a device used to read how much salt is dissolved in the water), add salt. Your goal is a specific gravity between 1.020 and 1.023.

Step 8

Fill your tank with the saltwater, leaving about an inch at the top.

Step 9

Start the filter system.

Step 10

Add the heater and thermometer. Most marine fish do best between 75 and 80 degrees.

Step 11

Let everything run for at least 72 hours and get the temperature settings right and the water moving.

Step 12

Cycle the aquarium. A just-set-up fish tank lacks the bacteria that it needs to form a steady biological cycle.

Step 13

Add your fish when the chemical levels are all okay and the tank temperature is within suggested limits.

Step 14

Buy a powerhead. In saltwater aquariums, water movement is an absolute must. Be careful not to get one so big that it causes a whirlpool effect.

Step 15

Get a protein skimmer, which is a necessity for marine tanks. This removes organic debris from the water before it has time to convert to nitrates.

Step 16

Keep in mind that you'll also need an external water pump and possibly an air pump for your skimmer.

Weighing only 4 to 5 ounces, sugar gliders are tiny, social animals. They are native to Australia and New Guinea. Like kangaroos, sugar gliders are a part of the marsupial family. A healthy glider can live up to 15 years. When selecting a sugar glider as a pet, make sure to select a healthy animal.

To properly cage a sugar glider you must first know a little about a sugar glider. Sugar gliders are active animals that need a lot of space to play and exercise. Sugar gliders live in groups called colonies in the wild most having 15 to 30 sugar gliders and do best when there is more than one in a cage together. The cage should encourage as close to a natural environment as possible with lots of room and engaging activities. Sugar gliders will bond with you very quickly and love to be outside of their cage but since they are nocturnal animals they tend to spend a lot of time in their cages. With this in mind the information below will help you learn how to properly cage a sugar glider.
