You must able to compete and know how things work, to avoid you have a blog but it just like be in the middle of jungle.

- Blog star is not only the way blog to make money
Not only celebrity can make money! The boss who behind those handsome guy and pretty hot girls may earn more.. You may have seen some famous blogger earning thousand of visit per day, and making good profits, then you feel unlucky for you are not like them or never possible to be them. You are wrong. Some of you might have noticed that recently since a couple of weeks ago I was runningNuffnang Ads in my blog. One on top, another on right side and another at the bottom of the article near the comments section.

Why? Well, I want to know if it's true that I can generate money through blogging. I have a cousin who practically resigned from her RM5,000 per month employment simply to blog full time and I envy her.

So one day this fan emailed me and suggested the same and even willing to let me borrow his Nuffnang account for two months just so that I can test myself this Nuffnang blogging money making concept. Needless to say, from the day one I pasted Nuffnang advertisement script on my HTML template, I was already imagining that sleek sexy laptop I've been drooling in my dreams.

Sadly enough, after one month (more or less), my dummy Nuffnang account only managed to generate 40 cents.. I repeat.. 40 cents! (and I would like to say thank you for whoever amongst you whom has been kind enough to click the ad which led to that 40 cents.. Seriously, thank you!)

And later I did find out that my cousin is actually posting thousands and thousands of mp3 music on her blog and let others downloaded the music without paying the artists and I thought - no wonder lah thousands of people visited her blog per day!

So I guess unless I'm willing to post porn, or steal someone's else work, or at least be willing to take money from certain politician to become part of his/her political propaganda machine; then there is no way to make that much money from blogging. No one (especially me) can writes several articles in one day just to keep readers' interest at bay all the time.So I say thank you to that fan of mine and his Nuffnang account.

But I'm still drooling in my sleep over that laptop! So I decided I have to come up with a better plan to make money.

The question is how to generate money this way:-

1. while maintaining my anonymity.

2. without having to subscribe to Lucifer's idea (porn, stealing, selling sex toys, gambling etc)

3. without accepting any money from politicians

4. without having to torture my brain to write articles every day.

5. without having to con anyone.

6. and most importantly - being greedy and lazy as most people are - I do hope to make a lot of money despite my menial efforts.

So I surfed the internet searching for all sorts of idea proposed out there on the safest and speediest money making scheme on planet earth.

Fortunately there is one money making scheme you can rely on and the authority who run this scheme is well known for keeping promises. It only take a very minimal efforts to register yourself into this scheme and there's no minimum or maximum amount of money you can invest. You can invest as little as RM.05 cents or as much as half your life savings. And the best part about it is that the profit return is somewhere as little as 10 times and can even be as huge as 700 times of your monetary investment!

There's basically no need to register to join the sceme. However, if you're non-Muslims then it would be advisable to go to the nearest mosque and ask the Imam there on how to embrace Islam. So what all these have to do with me quitting Nuffnang?

Well, because so far my investment in this money making scheme is just a few hundreds ringgit per month, I was hoping to triple that as soon as possible in order to reap a speedier profit return. Hopefully not only can I buy that laptop soon, I also need money to finance that bunker I've been planning to build before 2013. So taking the cue from chapter 6:160, I've decided to placed advertisements in my blog promoting this money making scheme. Because chapter 6:160 mentioned the words 'Good Deeds" then hopefully when any of you out there decided to donate to these poor children in need then not only will God pay you 1000% in dividends, He will pay me 'commissions' for running the ad too.

I don't think he'd mind of paying me a few percent commission though. He is well known for being the nicest Boss in the entire universe.

Just Don't Do It

Click fraud occurs in pay per click online advertising when a person, automated script, or computer program imitates a legitimate user of a web browser clicking on an ad, for the purpose of generating an improper charge per click. Click fraud is the subject of some controversy and increasing litigation due to the advertising networks being a key beneficiary of the fraud whether they like it or not.

Use of a computer to commit this type of internet fraud is a felony in many jurisdictions, for example as covered by Penal code 502 in California and the Computer Misuse Act 1990 in the United Kingdom. There have been arrests relating to click fraud with regard to malicious clicking in order to deplete a competitor's advertising budget.

In 2004, a California man created a software program that he claimed could let spammers defraud Google out of millions of dollars in fraudulent clicks. Authorities said he was arrested while trying to blackmail Google for $150,000 to hand over the program.

Types of Click Fraud

· 1. Basic clicker cheat

This is a noob. This guy knows almost nothing about web technology or network architecture. He clicks on his ads every time he has chance. It can be a few clicks to hundreds of clicks daily. Most likely he doesn't even read the AdSense Program Policies and Terms and Conditions.

· 2. Proxy clicker cheat

She knows a thing or two about cookies and IP address. Or she doesn't know, but somehow guessed that if she use the things called anonymizer, Google will not be able to trace her, because her identity is hidden.

· 3. Multiple computer clicker cheat

He knows that somehow Google will detect if the clicks are originated from his own computer. So he will try to even out origin of the clicks. He will recruit his friends, family members, relatives, neighbors, his cats, and his dogs on single mission: to click on the ads. He will also click on the AdSense ads when he is using the library computers, or his office workstation.

· 4. Software clicker cheat

Graduate to the next step is buyers of clickbots / click-bots. These are specialized robot software to click on AdSense ads. It will browse around your websites, clicking on the ads every few minutes. The more advanced ones will cloak the IP address too, so the website seems to be very popular worldwide. To cover the track, this clickbots will browse around the advertisers sites too while continuing its "click quest".

· 5. Paid-clickers cheat

If you don't like automated things, there is always other option for you. Just pay $50 dollars a month to the professional AdSense clickers. These are groups of highly specialized Internet surfers with office in the dark rooms in street corners of India, Pakistan, and China, helping AdSense account owner to earn good amounts of money - before the AdSense account is disabled, that is. They will browse around your websites, clicking on the ads every few minutes. Because they use human eyes, they know which ads worth more. And to be more convincing they can click a link or two, or sign up free offers / newsletters on the advertiser sites.

· 6. Click-rings cheat

Network is power. So says many business gurus. Instead of taking things into their own hands, these people realize that they can join hands with those with similar goals and distribute AdSense clicks among themselves, the so called AdSense click-rings. Joining this click-ring network means that your website address will be made known to members, who will regularly browse the website and click on your AdSense ads. In exchange, you will also browse other members' sites and click on their AdSense ads. The medium used varies. Some click-ring groups use mail-list for communications. Some are using bulletin boards/forum, Yahoo groups, or Usenet. IRC is another popular way. Slightly more complicated is specialized AdSense exchange software for collecting members website address and displaying others' websites for clicking.

· 7. Other medium cheat

I have tens of thousands email address on my newsletter subscriber list. If I include AdSense ads on my newsletters, with 5% CTR, I can get a thousand clicks per one email. Not bad. Or I can pay someone to write some useful/nice/funny/cute toolbars or firefox extensions or screensavers that people can download and use for free, and display my AdSense ads there.

· 8. Visitor cheat

Simply putting "Visit our sponsors" or "Check out the ads above" on your website is cheating. This might not be very clear-cut cheat to some. But Google AdSense program policies has stated clearly, the only text allowed are "Advertisements" or "Sponsored List"

· 9. Spam cheat

This is the highest level all click-frauds, the Maestro of Fraudsters. She spams millions of emails regularly, offering to "satisfy your inner needs if you can help me check on the links on my website". Of course, email is not the only way. What IRC and instant messaging (IM) are for, after all. She will look for unsuspecting victims, offering something too-good-to-be-true "if only they will visit the website and click on the links".

· 10. Click-through-rate cheat

Whichever method(s) above used, there is one limiting condition: the CTR(click-though-rate). Any CTR that exceeds certain percentage (probably around 10%) will raise red flag in Google AdSense back room. To lower the CTR, the professional cheaters will create some pages on the same domain that attracts very high traffic. Some interesting freebies will sure do the tricks. AdSense code is pasted there, thus creating a very high page impressions. Whether or not the the ads are clicked does not matter anyway, because they are targeting low paying keyword that does not have much competition. The fake clicks are, of course, on where the big money is, the low traffic pages stuffed with high-paying keywords.

You can't cheat Google

Every once in while, someone will comes out with ingenious idea of how to get more money from AdSense in less than honorable ways. He will announce to the whole world, posting in every forum and tell people how smart he is. His idea is always untraceable by Google, it is always original, and it always gives easy money.

What he doesn't know is, few months after that, he will get caught by Google, always. And his AdSense account will be disabled. Always. And he is banned from ever applying for AdSense account again. Always.

Google is a giant, with 2005 revenue of almost US$ 10 billions, and profits of more than US$ 1 billion. A large chunk of this comes from Adwords / AdSense advertisements.

More click fraud means less trust, less advertisers and less money, to the extent that if unsolved it will bring collapse to pay-per-click advertisement business. Now. Do you think Google will let you jeopardize their billion dollar business model?

They have money and ability to bring together many of the the smartest and brightest engineers and scientists on earth, has been doing that and will continue to do so. How smart do you think you are that you can outsmart collaborative effort of the brightest brains?

You might be able to pull through for two or three months, but eventually the fraud detection algorithm will catch up and you are caught. And you get banned from Google AdSense, among other things.
Cheating = stealing

No matter how you want to justify, face it, cheating is stealing. You are not only stealing from Google, but also from Adwords publishers. Majority of these are are not big companies, but small webmasters depending on Internet to make a living.

Moreover, even if your morality (or lack thereof) permits stealing from your own fellow, bear in mind that stealing is illegal. Regardless of whether it is done offline or online, a crime is a crime. You might get jailed for that.

In fact, Google has started to bring AdSense fraudsters to court a few months ago. Some were jailed, and some others were fined heavily.
It is just too easy to earn more, legally

Let's say you managed to cheat AdSense undetected. You don't use clickbot or proxy or click-ring or paid clickers. You managed to somehow get the clicks from distributed IP. You don't use pop-ups, spyware, adware. You are careful that your CTR does not exceed 10%. Still, your earning is limited. There is a cap you can't cross, else you will invite unwanted attention to your account.

With so much effort to cover your traces, actually you will get better result if you concentrate your effort to improve the website.

Write more content, submit articles, improve on your search engine optimisation, improve adsense placement, and you can get the same earning or even more. Sure it will take some time, but this is legitimate.

Some of the methods which Google uses to determine and detect cheating

Still thinking to cheat AdSense? Stop that. It will never get you anywhere. You might pull it off with smaller ads network, but definitely not with Google. Here are some detection methods they might use. At the very least, they have the resources to do so.

IP Address
If the AdSense click is originated from the same IP Address as the one used for accessing your AdSense account, your account is flagged.
Cookies
Most home users do not use static IP Address for Internet connection. In most cases just disconnect and reconnect will give you a new IP Address. But don't forget, Google has set cookies on your computer.
Other Google Services
Thinking that you are safe just because you do not access your AdSense account? Think again. This time, consider these: GMail, Google Earth, Google Calendar, Google Search, Google Toolbar, Google Talk, Google Sitemap, Google Desktop, Blogger, and so on, and so on. With the wide range of services they provide, Google can trace the originator of most (or probably almost all) clicks.

Oh, why this computer / IP address / person is so trigger-click-happy on this particular website but never click on the ads on other sites?

And why is it that people accessing these sites direct (type-in URL or from bookmark) tend to be very active ad-clickers compared with those referred from search engine or other sites?

And why the ad-clickers like to hit and run, compared with non ad-clickers that surf a few pages before leaving?
Click-Through-Rate (CTR)
Your CTR may range from 0.5% to 10%, but if it exceeds a certain point (probably around 10%), you are flagged.
Geo-Location
Used Urchin (Google Analytics) before? Then you should know that Google can trace traffics origin down to the small town. Different IP doesn't mean much. Unless you site is really targetted to one small geo-point, a high number of clicks from nearby location will get you banned quickly.
Hardware address?
MAC address of the LAN card, modem, and router works almost like a fingerprint. I'm not sure if Google can track this, but probably they do. They have rocket scientist, remember?
Advertisers conversion rate
Ad click is one thing. But does it bring value to the advertisers? If none of the clicks on your site translate to conversion to the advertiser, you are in trouble. First the Smart-Pricing hits, then your AdSense account disabled.
Search Engine Ranking
Your website is not indexed on any search engine, not linked by any prominent website, but get consistently high traffic? That sounds like something is in play. Regardless of whether it is an adware-embedded software, spam, trojan clickbot, or intentionally installed click-exchange network, it doesn't sound right.
Webpage design
How about the "click here" or "support us"? Google has the best search engine in the world. Is it really that hard to find those words?

Combo
Each of these detection methods might seem rather weak. But combine them together, and not many click-fraud can pass-through these filters. Even the smartest clickbot will have a hard time.

Ignore Adsense Program Policies & TOS
Click on your own ads, specially those you are "genuinely interested" in. Ask people to click on your ads: your friends, your family members, your relatives, your visitors, or even your dogs or your cats. Use proxies to avoid detection.
Participate in some form of click-ring. Click-rings are groups of people who gather with consensus to click each others' ads. Most commonly used methods are Yahoo Groups, instant messenger, mail list, web forum, or specially written software.
Buy, write, or use click-bot software. Click-bot software will go around your site and click on your ads. Most of the times, these click-bots are using proxies to avoid detection.
Pay the Indian-clickers. These are the people whose main jobs are clicking on PPC advertisements and paid by the malicious publishers. Most of them are from developing countries like India or China.
"Invest" with websites that promises to deliver "adsense clicks" for your site. Whatever methods they are using, most likely it falls under one of the aboves.
Extra words to make your visitors to notice your ads. Write "Click here" or "Please support us" or "Visit our sponsors". Anything other than Google-approved "sponsored links" or "advertisements".
Put in as many ads as possible in every page. Put more than three units of the normal ads block, more than one unit of ads links, or more than one referral buttons for each adsense, adwords, and firefox; all in one page.
Use spyware to get traffics to your site. Spyware, adware, malware, or whatever it is called can force computer users to open your website everytime they start the computer. Or even better, use some kind of specially written software, toolbar, etc to display or click on your ads.
Use pop-ups on your website. Everytime your user open a page, pop-up another one, ideally with the smiley or the IQ Test advertisements.
Get as much un-targetted traffic as possible, for instance using the auto-surfing programmes to rotate the members around your site and other sites.
Put the adsense code in non-content pages: registration forms, term and condition, login page.
Have a competitor contextual ad on same page with adsense ads, for example Yahoo Publisher Network. Please note though that non-contextual ads, e.g. affiliate links or keyword-based ads are acceptable by google and won't get you banned.
Get more than one adsense account. Maybe one for your dog-site, one for your cat-site, one for the v1agra pills, one for mp3 download, etc.
Put your adsense code in email, usenet, RSS, etc.
Tell everyone what is your CTR, your page impressions, etc. Telling people about your total earning, unfortunately, is allowed.
Put Google logo where you shouldn't, and don't put the logo where you should. In other word, ignore Google trademark.
Modify Adsense code as you see fit. Modify the layout, color, URL, will be well. Just anything other than copy-and-paste the code from Google.
And, this is important: if and when Google Adsense Team sends you email, ignore it.
Put adsense code in pages containing banned content.

TOKYO (AP) — Sony Corp. is introducing a smaller, slimmer and lighter version of its PlayStation 3 home console ahead of the year-end holidays as it gears up for growing competition in games from smartphones.

The announcement Wednesday from the Japanese electronics andentertainment company comes a day ahead of the annual Tokyo Game Show, where game makers show their wares. But the iPhone 5 smartphone from Apple Inc. is hogging much of the attention, already drawing long lines for pre-orders at some retailers, and more lines are expected ahead of Friday's launch.

The new PlayStation 3, closer to the size of a laptop, is half the size of the original model, introduced in 2006. It also offers more hard-drive memory at 500 gigabytes and 250 gigabytes, up from the current 320 GB and 160 GB options.

The global rollout starts Sept. 25 in North America, where the 250 GB version will sell for $269. The other version sells for $299 from Oct. 30. In Japan, the models go on sale Oct. 4 for 29,980 yen ($380) and 24,980 yen ($316).

Tokyo-based Sony is struggling as its other electronics businesses get battered by competition from Apple's iPhones as well as by cheaper Asian rivals.

The maker of Bravia TVs and Walkman portable players posted its worst loss in its 66-year history for the fiscal year ended in March — its fourth straight year of red ink.

The company is banking on games to help steer a turnaround. President Kazuo Hirai spent much of his career leading the game division.

To woo consumers, Sony is slashing the price on its PlayStation Portable, or PSP, mobile device as it increasingly focuses on its upgraded PlayStation Vita, which went on sale last year, for on-the-go games.

The PSP, which first went on sale in 2004, comes down Thursday to 13,800 yen ($175) in Japan from 16,800 yen ($213). There is no change to the U.S. price now at about $130.

Sony plans to expand entertainment based on cloud computing, which offers storage and other computer services over the network, after recently acquiring Gaikai Inc., a U.S. game company.

The PlayStation Vita won't be getting any upgrades just yet. But it will be available in new colors, blue and red, in addition to white and black, but only in Japan.

Some speculation is buzzing about a PlayStation 4, possibly before the end of next year, but officials were mum on that topic.

The PS Vita, which has a touch-panel, allows users to live-stream video and works as an electronic book function for colorful comics, according to Sony.

But Sony has already slashed its PS Vita sales target for this fiscal year through March 2013, to 12 million units, down from 16 million that was given three months earlier.

In lowering the target, Sony pointed to the economic slowdown, especially in Europe. But it also noted the intense competition from smartphones and social-networking entertainment.

Hiroshi Kawano, who heads Sony's game business in Japan, said the networking feature of PlayStation 3 allows users to enjoy millions of tunes, karaoke at home and a growing library of movies.

"Even after six years, the PlayStation 3 has not lost momentum and continues to deliver powerful home entertainment," he said at a Tokyo hall.

While we’re still waiting word on the PlayStation 4, Sony (SNE) is hoping we’ll make do with another revision of its PlayStation 3console. The company on Wednesday announced that its new CECH-4000 model, slated for release this fall, will be 20% smaller and 25% lighter than the previous model and will also ditch the slot-loading optical drive in favor of a disc-tray that slides open sideways.

The new PS3 will be available in two models: a 250GB that will sell for $269.99 and a 500GB model that will sell for $299.99. The 250GB model, which launches on September 25th, will be sold in a bundle with the game Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and come with a $30 voucher for digital content for the game DUST 514. Shoppers looking for the 500GB PS3 will have to wait until October 30th when it’s available as a bundle with Assassin’s Creed III.

How Video Game Assists the Visually Impaired

There are two things that make optometrist and neuroscientistLotfi Merabet's new computer game unusual: The various rooms and corridors in the game exactly mirror a real place, and players aren't able to navigate by looking at graphics on-screen. Instead, players must rely entirely on different sounds that tell them where doors, walls, jewels and monsters lay in wait.

Merabet and his colleagues at Harvard Medical School and the University of Chile designed the game for — and tested the game with — visually impaired people. And they found something interesting about their players when they later took the gamers to the real building on which the game was based. Although the researchers hadn't told the study participants to remember the game's layout, they found that those who played the game excelled at independently navigating the real building.

The researchers' study shows the promise of audio maps helping to solve a real problem for the blind, said Gordon Legge, who directs the Laboratory for Low-Vision Research at the University of Minnesota, is visually impaired, and was not involved in Merabet's study. "People who are visually impaired are often anxious about going to new places. That's a big issue," Legge said. "If there were software methods to explore and learn a place before they go, it could be quite advantageous." [10 Profound Innovations Ahead]

The study also hints at the possibilities of using audio games to teach visually impaired people in a way that sticks better than other methods, including a guided tour of the computer game's layout, which Merabet also studied. "Gaming sort of gives you a problem-solving sense that you don't have through directed navigation," said Merabet, who runs studies and sees patients at Harvard's Massachusetts Ear and Eye Infirmary.

Although there are still important software problems to resolve, in the future, major buildings might be able to offer audio maps or games to help visually impaired visitors prepare before they get there.

From game to real life

Starting last year, Merabet began testing his game on people aged 15 to 45 who had been blind since birth. Players wore headphones while they played the game and navigated by pressing keys on a keyboard. Whenever their avatars touched walls or doors, they heard characteristic sounds. A knock in the left ear meant a door to the left; a knock on the right, a door to the right. Knocking in both ears indicated a door in front. "The best way for you to get a sense of that room is by feeling around," Merabet said. [Video Game Improves Vision for Adults Born with Cataracts]

He told his study participants they were supposed to collect jewels hidden in the game's rooms, while avoiding monsters that would steal the jewels. Both the gems and monsters emitted sounds that increased in volume as the game players approached them — or as they approached the players. He didn't say anything about remembering the map, nor did he mention that the rooms' layout was exactly the same as the two-story, 23-room Carroll Center for the Blind, a school in Newton, Mass.

Yet when he took the game-players to the Carroll Center afterward, he found they could apply what they'd learned from the game to navigating the real building. When researchers told gamers to go from one specific room to another, the gamers could finish navigating the real-life building in about a minute and 15 seconds. When taken to a random room and told to find the nearest exit, the gamers could do so in a minute and one second.

In fact, the players performed better at the exit-finding task than visually impaired study volunteers who had taken a strict guided audio tour of the computer game's layout, sans monsters and jewels. (The gamers and the guided tour-takers performed equally well at walking from room to room.) Tour-takers generally chose longer routes than gamers did, the researchers found.

"Both groups can learn the layout of the building whether you teach them explicitly or whether they learn it implicitly through the game," Merabet told TechNewsDaily. But gamers, he said, "have a better sense of how the rooms are connected with each other."

Does it have to be a game?

Merabet's game wrapped up many characteristics that help with learning in one package: It forced people to explore independently and learn the hard way, by bumping into things. People enjoyed playing it and felt motivated to collect lots of jewels. ("I can tell you, at least anecdotally, it's remarkable how much people liked the game," Merabet said.) And the game may have forced people to walk certain paths that are important to learning a building's layout.

More experiments are needed if researchers want to pinpoint which characteristics are important to better learning from audio games and other audio maps, Legge said. It would be especially helpful to know if independent exploration by itself is enough, so that people could use software to wander through buildings virtually without having to contend with monsters every time, Legge thinks. "From a practical point of view, I'm not sure people would want to play a game every time they wanted to learn a new building," he said.

Merabet is now working to expand on his computer game research in several ways. One way is improving his software so that any building's blueprint can get automatically rendered into an audio map. Another is a brain-scan study that examines what parts of blind people's brains are activated when they play the game. He has finished the study, he said, but didn't want to reveal the results until they're published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Getting the software to work for all buildings is technologically challenging, Merabet said. Right now, his software works well for one-story buildings with straight corridors. For more complicated buildings, however, it's difficult for the computer program to remember to play sounds in the right place while users continually walk and change their position.

If Merabet is able to make an audio map generator, it could become exactly the tool Legge said would be so advantageous to those with vision impairments. Merabet compared the potential maps he could make to flight simulation software for pilots. Both would mentally prepare people for challenging tasks. "The idea of mental rehearsal is a very, very powerful one," he said.

Merabet published the results of his game navigation study yesterday (Sept. 19) in the journal PLOS ONE.

Gamers were left scratching their heads when Sony (SNE) announced its new slimmer PlayStation 3 would actually cost more than the model it was replacing. With these types of products shrinking, it’s usually the case that the reduction in build materials means savings pass on to the consumer. Not so — the new $269.99 PlayStation 3 will replace the old and out of production $249.99 PS3. Granted, consumers will get a copy of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and a 250GB hard drive instead of a 160GB one, but why hasn’t the six-year-old console hit the $199 price point yet? After all, the 4GB Xbox 360 is already sold for $199.99.

Sony Computer Entertainment America vice president of marketing, handhelds and home consolesJohn Koller told Engadget that the company has no plans to drop the six-year-old console’s price any time in the foreseeable future.

“There’s no price drop formally, but the thing that’s been happening in the market over the last year or so is that there’s been so many retail price promotions, and so many different gift card offers and all those things, being done by all of us (Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony), that we’ve heard from our consumer, ‘Enough with all these weird price moves. What we really want is content and games and value,’ ” Koller told Engadget.

That’s a bummer. It looks like shoppers looking for a PS3 this holiday will have to settle for whatever deals retailers dish out instead of relying on hard price cut.

How Video Game Statistics Could Transform War

Much of the U.S. military's younger generation has grown up playing video games that constantly tell players how well they're doing on the virtual battlefield — whether it's the screen turning red to warn of low health or displays showing the world's top-scoring players based on reviving fallen friends and killing enemies with certain weapons. A U.S. Army weapons engineer thinks that, with the right technologies, such gaming-world awareness could become real for tomorrow's soldiers.

U.S. soldiers could go into battle wearing "Google Glasses" that warn of exhaustion levels by changing their vision's tint from green ("optimal") to yellow or red ("danger"), said David Musgrave, a manager at the U.S. Army's Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center at the Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey. Tank commanders and helicopter pilots might see a kill ratio for how many enemy vehicles they've destroyed compared to the rest of their unit, or even to the entire Army.

"The same energy and pride that goes into climbing the rankings of 'Call of Duty' multiplayer could be turned towards higher soldier performance, whether that entails killing tanks, delivering fuel or saving lives," Musgrave said.

That idea remains decades away from implementation, even if U.S. Army commanders decide to support it. But Musgrave hopes to achieve the more practical plan of tracking weapons performance and soldier behaviors — a first step toward providing the real-time awareness that could eventually motivate soldiers the way games motivate players.

From games to war

Weapon malfunctions on the battlefield can make a life-or-death difference to the U.S. military. Yet Musgrave and his colleagues must rely on written reports and anecdotes from soldiers who may struggle to recall all the important details of when, where and how a weapon system failed or performed incorrectly.

"Ideally, I'd be able to go to some central database and pull up all the recent failures of that [weapon's] part and relevant history," Musgrave told TechNewsDaily. "Unfortunately, right now, at best we can get someone who used the system to try to vaguely remember if he'd seen the error before."

A frustrated Musgrave found inspiration in his video game hobby. He was watching a weekly Web series called ExtraCredits when the show discussed how game companies tracked the behavior of players inside virtual worlds. Intrigued, he began running Google searches and discovered a presentation from Bioware, the maker of popular games, such as the "Mass Effect" trilogy, with statistics about how many players chose certain actions. Musgrave began imagining the possibility of automatically gathering such data in real life. He envisioned hundreds of self-propelled howitzers, huge cannons mounted on tank-like tracks, reporting back their status, history and performance from around the world. (Musgrave is project lead for fire-control software development on the M109 Paladin, the U.S. Army's latest 155 mm howitzer).

Numbers game

Self-reporting weapons could help engineers troubleshoot hardware or software problems, even if the malfunctions only happen half a dozen times over a weapon program's lifespan. That's because Army engineers could sort through the data pile, looking at factors like time or temperature, to find what factors might be related to the problem.

"Taken on a case-by-case basis, a root cause may be impossible to find," Musgrave explained. "But if we can pull a lot of data together, we may be able to find trends in the chaos."

An even more futuristic system could give the U.S. Army statistics that gamers already expect from their online, multiplayer sessions, such as average hit rates or the time required to engage enemy targets with a certain weapon. If the tracking extends to soldier behavior, it could even identify what Army units might need more training on a specific weapon.

Such weapons-performance tracking might even inspire innovations in battlefield tactics or weapons design.

"For instance, let's say our shoulder-fired missile has a great thermal scope with high-power zoom," Musgrave said. "Then, let's say we notice that soldiers sometimes turn it on and use the optics as a spotting or recon device instead of just finding a target for a missile. This would be a great new way to use the system and something that the original designers might not have considered."

Battlefield gamification

Still, tracking weapons performance and soldier behavior in the real world presents a much more difficult challenge than tracking virtual actions in a video game. Musgrave wants to avoid loading soldiers down with more hardware or the need to learn new procedures; so, his ideal starter system would piggyback on existing Army weapons software and focus on collecting just a few data points.

The Army may eventually have a "tactical Internet" connecting all its soldiers and vehicles, a system that could report statistics in real-time and provide the foundation for the "gamification" of the battlefield. Yet the technology already exists to make a primitive data-reporting system a reality within a decade, Musgrave said.

"Maybe we won't have the live feedback that BioWare gets on who's playing 'Mass Effect,' but the Army could have something very useful in a very short amount of time," Musgrave said. "If we can keep the idea simple, affordable and non-intrusive, I think this could actually happen."

Even before the PlayStation 3 launched in 2006, Sony (SNE) decreed the console would have a 10-year lifespan. Six years later, the PS3 is already showing its age, as is its main competitor,Microsoft’s (MSFT) Xbox 360. Both gamers and developers want new consoles to play with and develop for, and in a recent interview with GameSpot, Sony’s VP of hardware marketing John Kollersuggested that regardless of when the highly anticipated PlayStation 4 (code-named “Orbis”) launches, Sony will support the PS3 for at least three more years.

Speaking on how long the PS3 would stick around, Koller told GameSpot: “We’re going to continue supporting the PS3 for the next few years. Absolutely. And we’re going to continue supporting it not only that long, but as long as there is a development spigot that’s running hot. And I can tell you right now, the development spigot for PS3 is very hot. A lot of great games coming. Same thing with PS2…it’s kind of stuck around as that old warrior, many years after its launch. But there’s still games launching for it.”

Unconfirmed early PlayStation 4 rumors suggest Sony’s next console will still support optical discs, output 1080p 3D video and have an AMD x64 CPU and AMD Southern Islands GPU. BGR also exclusively reported in August that Sony’s PS4 will support 4K resolution for both games and videos.

In the meantime, a new PlayStation 3 model that is 20% smaller and 25% lighter will hit stores on September 25th for $269.99.

The study: Active video games that get kids dancing and boxing may provide significant cardiovascular benefits and calorie burn. A study published online today in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine noted the physiological changes in 18 boys and girls aged 11 to 15. The children played two Kinect games: Dance Central and Kinect Sports Boxing as well as sedentary video games.

During the Dance Central game energy expenditure increased 150 percent over resting rates, and during the boxing game it went up 263 percent. Compared to passive video gaming, the rates were 103 percent and 194 percent higher, respectively. Researchers also saw improvements during the active games in heart rate and peak oxygen uptake, both markers for cardiovascular health.

What we already know: Exercise physiologists have had high hopes for active video games ever since they came on the market, believing they might be a great way to get sedentary kids to move. With childhood obesity rates at alarming levels, practically anything that encourages exercise is welcome. Early games however, promoted little activity, and controllers were cumbersome and got in the way.

However, as games evolved they allowed kids to really step it up. A 2011 study in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine journal found that games such as Dance Dance Revolution and Sportwall helped kids burn more calories compared to walking on a treadmill at 3 miles an hour. The advent of controller-less Kinect games (the system uses a webcam-style sensor) allows players to move more freely.

What this means for you: If you want to get your couch-loving kids to move, you might try giving them what they already love: video games. Make sure they’re games that encourage moderate to vigorous exercise—you could even try them yourself.

The study authors wrote that while the results of these games were good, there’s no data to tell if children will still use them several months or even a year down the road. Even if they are, it’s a good idea to introduce kids to different types of age-appropriate games and workouts that train various muscles and stave off boredom.

Xbox games get kids moving, but benefits unclear

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Kids burned more calories while playing dance and boxing video games than they did during a sedentary car racing game, in a new UK study.

Researchers said it's not surprising children would get their body working harder while playing a game on Kinect for the Xbox 360 that requires being off the couch and jumping around.

But it's still not clear whether that translates to real weight and health differences for youngsters who have those games at home.

"If the kids played the games exactly as they played them in this study and they did that for the amount of time they normally play video games, that could be very beneficial," said Jacob Barkley, an exercise science researcher from Kent State University in Ohio who wasn't involved in the study.

"I would stop short of saying, ‘Well then just buy your kids the Xbox and they'll lose weight,'" he told Reuters Health.

That's because kids may opt for the less-intensive games on the system, or they may substitute outdoor physical activity for video gaming, he added.

The new study involved 18 kids aged 11 to 15. Researchers from the University of Chester had the kids play three different Kinect games for 15 minutes each: Project Gotham Racing 4 (a sedentary game), Dance Central and Kinect Sports Boxing. Kids wore a heart rate monitor as well as a facemask measuring oxygen consumption so the researchers could calculate how many calories they were burning.

Heart rate and energy expenditure were both higher with the active games than the sedentary comparison, Michael Morris and his colleagues reported in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

On average, kids burned calories at a rate of 90 per hour playing the racing game, 180 per hour during Dance Central and 264 per hour while virtual boxing.

That's a higher expenditure than has been shown with other active gaming systems, according to Barkley - possibly because Kinect doesn't use a controller, so it's harder for kids to sit down while playing.

Calorie expenditure during the boxing game was comparable to what a person would burn while playing volleyball or table tennis, according to Morris.

"Moderate activity is obviously very good for you," he told Reuters Health. But, he added, this study just provides a "snapshot" into possible benefits from the games.

Kinect runs for $100 to $200 and the games can be bought for about $20 each.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend kids and teens get at least one hour of physical activity each day. That can include brisk walking or running, gymnastics or team sports like basketball.

"I don't think the (Kinect) games are a good substitute for traditional physical activity," Barkley said. "I do think the games are a good option relative to a sedentary game."

Morris said he and his colleagues are now working on a longer-term study in which they give kids the games at home and track their weight and fitness for a year to see if active gaming leads to any health changes.
