Hollywood, CA - The summer's most anticipated movie of the summer and perhaps of the year will likely also be the biggest box office draw, too. After all, "this is it" the final installment of Harry Potter. According to distributor Warner Bros. the blockbuster is already breaklng box office records this weekend. The film has already earned more than $100 million since opening night (Wednesday) worldwide.
This weekend, movie theaters across the country will be likely be sold out. Movie goers are given Harry Potter shaped 3-D glasses (how cool is that?), which will now be souvenirs. The movie franchise based on four inch thick books, which have inspired children read about magic and demons, and now the final chapter ends with a bang at the box office, and who knows it could be a billion dollar baby, too when the curtain falls on, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II.

This final chapter shows Harry, Ron, and Hermione coming back to Hogwarts as they attempted to destroy the final horcruxes. Facing Lord Voldemort, Harry’s life is in jeopardy in an lengthy battle between good and evil.

I love this trailer by Warner Bros. as it takes it back to the days when my teenage boys were barely
big enough to sit on a theater seat. Enjoy.

The PG-13 fantasy adventure is playing 3D and IMAX 3D theaters running for two hours and five minutes. You might want to get the larger drink and big pop corn, this is the movie of the year, and I give three (opps two) thumbs up.

The cast list is long, but worth mentioning, because we will see many of these actors as they grow older in future movies.

Green Lantern grosed $21.6 million at the box office last night: According to early figures online, the comic book-superhero was less than anticipated, but had a lot of competition. By comparison, Thor, the last comic superhero movie hit near $26 million on its opening night in May.

The media, especially the LA Times reviews (three articles on Friday) were brutal. Those reviews and a few others will not help the weekend gross receipts expected to be around $55 million.

It is a fun movie, not dark like some DC Comic Book films have been in the past. In fact you can take your children to this one. It has more going on than Spiderman, at least the first debut I saw. My predicting is when it goes global and plays in Europe and Japan, it will proove the media was wrong, again about this flick that cost around $200 million to make with Martin Campbell at the helm. I think the PG-13 film will do well, and I give it two thumbs up.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins was not even a close second with arouhd $6.4 million. That’s about what Jim Carrey’s comedy movie made three years ago with Yes Man.

One of the most talked about superhero films gets the green light for a premiere in Hollywood Thursday and opens on this Friday. In New York the buzz is already starting to pick up with a scheduled midnight showing on tonight (Thursday) for the Green Lantern.

The movie is based on the DC comics character of the Green Lantern, and is one of WB's most promoted and early buzzed movie promises in 2011. The animation is spectacular and the storylines promises to keep Green Lantern comic book fans happy.

Each Green Lantern possesses a power ring and power lantern that gives the user great control over the physical world as long as the wielder has sufficient willpower and strength to wield it.

The ring is one of the most powerful weapons in the universe, and can be very dangerous. While the ring of the Golden Age Green Lantern (Alan Scott) was magically powered, the rings worn by all subsequent Lanterns were technological creations of the Guardians of the Universe, who granted such rings to worthy candidates. These individuals made up the intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps.

Warner Bros. did the usual blocking off several blocks on Hollywood Blvd. at Mann's Chinese Theater location jamming traffic the whole day, so Green Lantern fans can snap photos of Martin Campbell and Ryan Reynolds, Green Lantern cast and other celebrities who show up.

Many of the Green Lantern cast members were on the black and green celebrity carpet last night. The media lines to interview Martin Campbell and other stars
was a quarter mile long in front of Mann's Chinese Theater.

One of my favorite actresses cast in the Green Lantern is Angela Bassett. Among her many artistic accomplishments, Bassett was Oscar-nominated and won both the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture- Comedy/Musical, and the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Motion Picture, for her star-making performance as Tina Turner/Anna Mae Bullock in 1993’s What's Love Got to Do with It. She won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her work as the late-Dr. Betty Shabazz in Spike Lee's Malcolm X, (1982). She also received an Emmy nomination her lead role in the 2002 television feature, The Rosa Parks Story, for which she was Executive Producer.

Angela also served as Executive Producer on the films Our American and Bucket of Blood.

Angela Bassett has built her career around playing some of the most celebrated real-life, pioneering women of the twentieth century. A native of New York City, Bassett & her sister D'nette grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida with their mother Betty. Angela resides in California with her husband, Courtney B. Vance, and her children Bronwyn and Slater.

novel entitled The Vallie, an autobiographical novel spanning the

author’s early childhood to today.

“Social media is not for kids,” Sasha Strauss, social media and brand expert and keynote speaker told the35^th Annual Awards banquet last night (April 7, 2011) of Greater Los Angeles chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ /LA).

Strauss, managing director at Innovation Protocol, a brand strategy consulting firm, has presented forums throughout East Asia, Europe and North America. He has been interviewed by National Public Radio, KNX/CBS Radio and The Wall Street Journal about branding everything from presidential candidates to innovate start-ups and Fortune 500s.

“I want to talk to you tonight about your customers, the people who read your content in the newspaper, on the air in radio or TV News,” he said. “You need to listen before you engage in Social Media, you don’t need to take out a company Facebook home page, besides that picture probably doesn’t even look like you, and your profile has been written by someone else.

The best advice is to listen to what people are saying for two weeks. After that time you will know how to talk to your customers,” explained Strauss.Strauss talked about the profound impact social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, are having on the news business today. “Don’t think of how you can make money with social media, think of it as a tool for sales, a tool for learning, a tool for understanding,” he explained. “How much better will your product be when you know your customers and when it’s timely that’s when you will make money on social media.”

Before the awards event, Strauss told this writer that journalists need to get engaged into

social media.

Everyone under 20 doesn’t know life before social media, so this is how they grew up getting information. Google was just recently beat by Facebook showing they are the number one place people conduct inquiries for information. That means something that they trust people they follow for guidance, information and you as journalists need to know that we trust you. When we gain that information, we’ll be your number one advocate.Strauss also said don’t put personal stuff on your Facebook pages. “The one’s you have to be fearful of are the ones who are quite and private, not the ones who are public,” he said.

Strauss says he spends 20 percent his time on social media. “But I am not socializing. I’m learning about the human, the competitors, the messaging, texting and finding out who people trust, the way people think before I give my clients any advice.”. Strauss is also an adjunct professor at USC’s Annenberg School for Communication, where he teaches graduate brand strategy.

Santa Barbara, CA - One of the hardest stories to write about is the death of a dear friend, who was also my fishing buddy.

I received several calls on the morning of Friday, Feb. 04, 2011 from the media, first KNX, then KNBC-TV then LABJ, and many others asking me to confirm the death of Lee Harrington, past president and CEO of LAEDC, the executive director of Southern California Leadership Council (SCLC).

This was the second time in nearly two months that I lost a friend and past client at the Los Angeles County Economic Development Council and was asked to confirm a death of a close friend and long time economic development client.

First, Chief Economist Jack Kyser, formerly chief economist at LAEDC in December, and now Lee K. Harrington, executive director of SCLC.
Harrington was past President and CEO of LAEDC for some two decades. We had the pleasure of knowing him the last 10 years. I even remember interviewing him when I was a radio news reporter in Los Angeles.

Lee Harrington and the LAEDC hired us (MAYO Communications) when the Longshoremen were locked out at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and the only people talking about it were Lee Harrington, Jack Kyser and Wally Baker.

The LAEDC not only came up with hard numbers, and the economic impact, but SoCal was going through new redistricting, so the news and economic impacts were shocking even to the Congressmen of those districts when it hit the media. The story was published in every literally every newspaper in the country. Bottom line, LAEDC discovered there was a $5 billion economic impact to the country, $2 billion to California alone. Even the state of Maine suffered $2 million in loses. It virutally put the busiest ports in the country and LAEDC on the global map.

Later, two weeks before President Bush announced we were going to War in Iraq, the three musketeers called me again, and Lee, Jack and Wally were very excited about the "2004-2005 Economic Forecast."

I told them the media only wants to hear about the "War." Then after brainstorming with all three, I asked Jack, Lee and Wally, if "LAEDC has ever done the economic impact of going to war?" Jack Kyser piped up immediately saying, "No." Then I asked, "Could you come up with an economic impact of California going to war?" They all said "YES."

First 'Economic Warcast' - Los Angeles County Economic Development (LAEDC)

So MAYO Communications renamed the media campaign "2004-2005 First Economic Warcast." The only media that realized MAYO had coined the phrase "Warcast" is the Associated Press. It also earned massive print, TV and radio coverage and earned numerous awards from Public Relations Society of America.

The last time I went fishing in the Pacific Ocean overnight with Lee Harrington, who was like me, crazy about fishing, was last year.

We were anchored in the deep Channel Island canal area along with several yachts, several large sailing boats and a tug boat. At 4:00 A.M. I awoke from a bench in the kitchen to crashing pots and pans with loud splashing noises against the boat and alerted Skipper Lee Harrington, who was sleeping in the bow and two other friends who were sleeping in the stern. It was a close call, and God must have been watching over us as we had nearlyhit several large ships and the tug boat.
But like a crazy fishermen I am, every time I had talked to Lee, I asked when are going fishing again? He replied, "soon, as the tuna fish are biting again."

He loved to rub it in when fish were biting bigtime, and I couldn't get away to go fishing. Lee was also crazy about surfing,too. Something about being close to, on top off or in the ocean, like surfing and fishing relaxes the soul. He probably didn't know that it was his last surfing trip, and his passion took him early in life, but as most of his friends would say, "at least he died doing what he loved most."

The media, friends,his family and I will sincerely miss Lee Harrington, my friend, my fishing buddy and client, may he rest in peace, and God bless his surviving family. Los Angeles, CA – Award-winning Actress Alexis Rhee was among the Hollywood Stars walking the red carpet at the Breast Cancer Awareness Pre-Oscar Party, Wednesday night (Feb. 23, 2011). The Beverly Hills event takes place at Gonpachi Japanese Restaurant (134 N. La Cienega Blvd.), hosted by David Harrison Levi.

“Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in the United States,” said Actress Rhee. “I take part in activities that benefit and help raise awareness for breast cancer, because it is a good cause that impacts so many lives. Even though my Mom had breast cancer and was treated she died of Alzheimer's. We need more events like this one, where we are celebrating the Oscars and we’re connecting people to breast cancer awareness.”

    Actress Alexis Rhee, whose long list of film credits include the blockbuster Oscar-winning Crash (2004); On the Rocks (2006), Norbit (2007) and The Things We Carry (2009), and hit TV shows such as Lost, ER and Gilmore Girls to name a few, is also an accomplished violinist.

    Levi is a Beverly Hills philanthropist, whose sister died of breast cancer. His lifelong mission is to bring awareness to breast cancer in Hollywood and nationally. Levi holds breast cancer awareness events at least once a month and capitalizes on high profile activities to bring attention to his goal. “My mission is simple,” said David Harrison Levi. “I want to see an end to cancer as I’m tired of and saddened by the loss of so many beautiful friends and family members. Early detection is the key to saving lives.”

    Although the jury is still out on the Oscars race, Rhee expects to see a lot of surprises at the Academy Awards ceremony this weekend. “There are quite of few surprises in this year’s nominees for the 83rd Academy Awards,” said Rhee. “Like everyone else, I have my favorites. And the Golden Globe winners gave us a sneak peak of the stiff competition, too. My congratulations to everyone nominated, because they’re all winners in my book.”

    Rhee starred as Kim Lee in the Oscar winning film Crash, starred as Geisha #1 in the film Blade Runner, and starred as Mrs. Wong, wife of Eddie Murphy's character Mr. Wong, in the film Norbit. She also guest- starred in the season 13 episode "Heart of the Matter" of the TV show ER.

Rhee has just been cast to costar in a new movie, MATA LEAO: THE LION KILLER, which begins filming in a few weeks.
She will be acting opposite Graham Beckel (L.A. Confidental, Brokeback Mountain) and Joanna Sotomura (Madison County), in MATA LEAO: THE LION KILLER. Grey Damon (True Blood) from Friday Night Lights TV series.

The actress is also is putting finishing touches a screenplay for a film about a Jazz Pianist.

    The 83^rd Academy Awards will be held on February 27, 2011. This year's Best Picture nominees, in alphabetical order, are "Black Swan," "The Fighter," "Inception," "The Kids Are All Right," "The King's Speech," "127 Hours," "The Social Network," "Toy Story 3," "True Grit" and "Winter's Bone”. U.S. Economic Recovery is Underway, Stronger Growth in ’12

In L.A. County, international trade, entertainment and tourism leads regional economy.

Los Angeles — The economic recovery is under way led by increased international trade and growth in the high-tech sector, entertainment and tourism, according to the 2011-2012 Economic Forecast and Industry Outlook report released today by the Kyser Center for Economic Research at the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC).

The Los Angeles economy “appears to be past the bottom of the recession and is starting up the recovery path during 2011 and 2012,” said LAEDC Chief EconomistNancy D. Sidhu, Ph.D. “Many industries are back in the black and employment is rising in some areas.”

Imports and exports have rebounded around the world. Increased international trade activity in 2011 will benefit the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, which both posted strong years in 2010.

Hiring is also expected to grow as well for the region’s tourism and entertainment sectors as a result of increased filming and more visitors to the region, helped by the new convention center hotel at L.A. LIVE.

TV/ film permits and production on the rise.

However, there is little likelihood the housing sector will escape another difficult year, even though 2011 is expected to bring some improvement. Housing activity will only see incremental improvement even though it has improved from the 2009 lows.

California, which had the second highest unemployment rate in the country in 2010 at 12.5 percent, will see employment growth in 2011. However, much like the national picture, California’s jobless rate will remain relatively high, with the LAEDC forecasting an average unemployment rate of 12.1 percent this year and the rate coming down to 11.5 percent by next year.

“We project that the California and U.S. economies will grow moderately in 2011 and 2012,” said Sidhu. “But the recession was so deep, 2011 won’t feel all that good despite improvements in most industries.

However, the state is headed in the right direction, and the economy will seem even better by 2012.”

Growing Together report highlights L.A. County’s personal and economic ties with Japan

The LAEDC also released a separate, new report, “Growing Together – Japan and Los Angeles County”. The report describes many of the close ties that have developed between Los Angeles County and Japan, the number one source of foreign direct investment into L.A. County.

U.S. – Japan trade has increased dramatically over the past 50 years jumping from $3.2 billion to $211 billion at its peak in 2000. Japan is the second largest trading partner of the Los Angeles Customs District with the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach together handling nearly 25 percent of total trade between Japan and the U.S.

The report also documents the growing importance of foreign direct investment in this relationship, reviewing both investments made by Los Angeles area business firms in Japan and Japanese investments in Los Angeles County.

To discuss their investments made in the region, the LAEDC’s EconomicForecast event held at the Los Angeles Marriott on Feb. 16 features a panel of speakers from well-known Japanese companies. Representatives from Honda Motors, Union Bank and Yakult, makers of probiotic beverages, will discuss the significant impact of Japanese companies on the L.A. County economy.

SHERMAN OAKS (CBS) — Longtime CBS Radio news anchor, reporter and journalist Jack Popejoy died of complications from cancer Sunday at his home in Sherman Oaks. He was 63.

Popejoy anchored the morning news program on KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO along with Dick Helton and Vicky Moore since February 2009. He continued to work on-air until late January. From 1986 – 2009 he worked at sister station KFWB, where he served as the morning news anchor since 2000.

When I lost my house in the Jan. 17, 1994 Northridge Earthquake, I became more acquainted with Jack Popejoy, not only as a newsman at KFWB, later KNX Radio, but as an avid listener. I covered earthquakes when I worked for NBC Mutual News, AP Radio and UPI Radio networks, but there's nothing like having Jack Popejoy remind us how to prepare, what to do and how to save yourself.

The last time I saw Jack Popejoy was at the Radio TV News Associations (RTNA) Golden Mike Awards program last month

I only snapped one photo, and never thought it would be the last time I saw him. He was an amazing newsman, could read copy cold during such breaking news as the Rodney King officiers beating trial to horrific events in Los Angeles Riots. Whenever an earthquake struck anywhere in the world, Jack could talk about them as it happened in our backyard, scientifically and in layman's terms. Even when I worked as media relations manager at The Gas Company Jack Popejoy was the go to guy to get the word out on the Northridge Earthquake, damage and aftershocks.

Several organizations he belong to have issued statements and his colleagues, coworkers, friends and family are all in mourning, including myself. Can someone please push the "Stop Good guys from dying" button. This makes three friends I have lost since December, and the second Jack, too.

The Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists mourns the loss of CBS Radio news anchor Jack Popejoy who has died at the age of 63 following a struggle with cancer.
Until just a few weeks ago, Popejoy graced the airwaves anchoring the morning news on KNX 1070 Newsradio. From 1986 to 2009, he anchored the news on KFWB. His illustrious career, starting in the 1960s, included reporting and anchoring the news at KCOP-TV and KZLA-FM. He was known to radio listeners for his outstanding expertise on Southern California earthquakes and the nation’s space program.
Popejoy was a highly respected and honored broadcast journalist. His numerous awards included recognition by SPJ/LA as Journalist of the Year in 1998. Last month, he received Best Newscast honors from the Radio and Television News Association of Southern California. We honor the memory of one of L.A.’s most distinguished broadcast journalists and extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

Universal City, CA - “It’s great to be here amongst many of my colleagues I have worked with over the years,” Regis Philbin said before tonight’s (Saturday 01-22-11) Radio TV News Assn. Gold Mike Awards’ dinner at the Universal Hilton. “It’s even nicer when you are honored by my peers at RTNA as he was getting his photo taken with KNX Business Hour Host Frank Mottek and others.”

Philbin is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most hours on television of anyone in the world. He has entertained generations as the host of the daily talk show “Live with Regis and Kelly,” and his career is now into its seventh decade. He started with “The Regis Philbin Show” in San Diego and soon moved to Los Angeles. His first national exposure came as the announcer for ABC’s nightly talk-variety program “The Joey Bishop Show.”

Philbin also was the original host of the blockbuster “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” game show. He is receiving the RTNA’s first-ever “Broadcast Legend Award” for his stature and excellence in broadcasting.

Philbin earlier announced this week on his nationally famous "Live With Regis And Kelly" show that he would be stepping down later this year.

KNX won the Golden Mike for "Best Radio Newscast Over 15 Minutes," while KFI won "Best Radio Newscast Under 15 Minutes" for major market stations.

KNBC was honored tonight with the awards for "Best Daytime" and "Best Half Hour" newscasts, while KTTV won the Golden Mike for "Best 60-Minute Newscast" at the 61st Annual Golden Mike Awards in Universal City.

KNBC-TV's longest running TV Anchor Kelly Lange, who started as a weather girl, and Sunday live talk show host was given a "Lifetime Achievement Award." She dished out plenty of stories over the decades at Channel 4 News, where explicatives were accidentally aired by such famous people at Tom Brokaw and others she worked with at the Peacock station in Burbank.

Kelly Lange was the first female weeknight television news anchor in Southern California. Her career started in 1967 as an airborne traffic reporter for KABC-AM radio. She joined KNBC-TV in 1971 where she spent 28 years. Lange won numerous awards, including multiple Golden Mikes and Emmys. She became nationally known as a fill-in anchor on NBC’s “Today” and “Tomorrow” shows. She developed a second career as a novelist and has half-a-dozen books to her credit.

The Golden Mikes Awards for broadcast news excellence are presented annually by the RTNA, the non-profit group representing broadcast newsrooms in Los Angeles, San Diego, and all of the other markets from Bakersfield south to the Mexican border.

Longtime Los Angeles television anchors Kelly Lange, retired from KNBC and currently an author, and Jose A. Ronstadt, currently with Telemundo in Los Angeles, were presented with "Lifetime Achievement Awards.

"The awards were presented at the Universal Hilton Hotel as part of ceremonies honoring the best in radio, television, and internet broadcast journalism in Southern California.

José Ronstadt is a longtime television news anchor—and household name in Spanish-language broadcasting. His career includes long stints at KVEA-TV, KWHY-TV and KMEX-TV. Ronstadt has produced and hosted a number of internationally broadcast news, sports and entertainment shows and specials. In addition to his storied career in news, Ronstadt is well-known for his community involvement. He’s also heavily involved in the world of mariachi music and is a member of the International Mariachi Hall of Fame.
