members yesterday in Gaskiya Muslims quarters of Zaria town, 65km north
of Kaduna metropolis led to exchange of gunfire between the sect and a
joint operation by soldiers and security agencies leaving two members of
the sect dead.

An explosion was said to have occurred at about 9 am around the area
which caused pandemonium as the Army later evacuated residents in the
neighbourhood.
A statement issued to newsmen by the PRO, Nigerian Army Depot Zaria,
Captain Ibrahim Abdullahi said, “Boko Haram members engaged the Army and
State Security Service, SSS, in a fierce gun battle following a tip off
that Boko Haram members were planning a major suicide mission
in Zaria, Kaduna and Suleja to coincide with Independence day
anniversary which led to the joint operation. During the exercise, we
discovered heavy explosives in a warehouse which were meant for the
operations.
“As a result a controlled detonation was carried out by Army
engineers to save residents of the area and further stop the planning
and execution of terrorism by the sect.”
Another statement signed by spokesman of the National Emergency
Management Agency, NEMA, Yusuf Shuaibu reads: “An explosion was
detonated early morning today close to Islamic boarding school in
Gaskiya Area in Zaria. Two of the suspects were killed by security
personnel. Injured victims have been taken to the hospitals.”

National Address by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR,

Gcfr, on the Occasion of the Independence Day Anniversary on Monday,
1stoctober, 2012

1. Beloved countrymen and women, on this day, fifty-two
years ago, our founding fathers brought joy and hope to the hearts of
our people when they won independence for our great country. Nigeria
made a clean break with more than six decades of colonial rule, and
emerged as a truly independent nation. That turning point was a new
beginning for our nation.
2. Those who witnessed the lowering of the Union Jack and
the emergence of the Green White Green flag continue to relish the
memory, because that ceremony was not just about the destiny of a
nation, but the future of a people.
3. That future is here; we are the inheritors of a great legacy that goes even much farther into the past.
4. The worthy patriots who made this possible were young
men and women in their twenties and thirties. They worked together to
restore dignity and honour to the Nigerian people. Their resolve united a
multicultural and multilingual nation of diverse peoples, with more
than 250 distinct languages and ethnic groups.
5. In 1960, our diversity became a source of strength,
and the new leaders resolved to carry the flag of independence for the
benefit of future generations. They had their differences, but they
placed a greater premium on the need to come together to build a new
nation.
6. It is that resolve, and that glorious moment that we
celebrate today. We also celebrate the patriotism of our heroes past: Dr
Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Chief
Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Michael Okpara, Chief Anthony Enahoro, Herbert
Macaulay, and several others who made the case for our independence.
7. We remember as always, their contributions to the
making of the Nigerian nation, and the efforts of their successors since
1960. We also celebrate the unfailing optimism and resilience of
Nigerians who remain proud of our national identity.
8. On this special day, I call on every Nigerian to remain
steadfast, because our nation is indeed making progress. I call on
every Nigerian to rediscover that special spirit that enables us to
triumph over every adversity as a people:
9. We weathered the storm of the civil war, we have
refused to be broken by sectarian crises; we have remained a strong
nation. I bring to you today, a message of renewed hope and faith in
the immense possibilities that lie ahead.
10. Fellow citizens, I have an unshaken belief in the future of
our great Country. I consider it a priority and sacred duty to continue
to strengthen the bond of unity that holds our nation together and to
promote and nourish the creative energies of our people. This is a
central objective of our administration’s Transformation Agenda.
Nigeria, I assure you, will continue to grow from strength to strength.
11. Since I assumed office as President of our dear country on
the 6th of May 2010, I have continued to work with our countrymen and
women to enhance our nation’s growth and development.
12. Our vision is encapsulated in the Transformation Agenda. We
are working hard and making progress on many fronts. We have cleaned up
our electoral process; our elections are now globally acclaimed to be
free and fair. Nigeria is now on a higher pedestal regarding elections.
13. Over the past five years, the global economy has been going
through a weak and uncertain recovery. During the same period and
particularly in the last two years, the Nigerian economy has done
appreciably well despite the global financial crisis. Nigeria’s real
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has grown by 7.1 per cent on average.
14. It is also significant that the GDP growth has been driven
largely by the non-oil sector. In pursuance of the main goals of the
Transformation Agenda, a number of reforms and initiatives are being
pursued in key sectors of the economy with a view to consolidating the
gains of the economic growth.
15. Our country’s power supply situation is improving
gradually. We are successfully implementing a well-integrated power
sector reform programme which includes institutional arrangements to
facilitate and strengthen private-sector-led power generation,
transmission and distribution.
16. We have also put in place a cost-reflective tariff
structure that reduces the cost of power for a majority of electricity
consumers. I am pleased with the feedback from across the country, of
improvements in power supply.
17. We are continuing to improve and stabilize on our crude
production volumes; our 12-month gas supply emergency plan, put in place
earlier this year, has produced more than the targeted volumes of gas
for power generation. A robust Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) has been
placed before the National Assembly. Its passage into law will ensure
far-reaching reforms, transparency, accountability, increased government
revenue and predictability for investors in the Oil and Gas sector.
18. Several government programmes and projects are creating
wealth and millions of job opportunities for our youth and general
population. Such programmes include: You-Win, both for the youth and for
the women, Public Works, the Local Content Initiative in the Oil and
Gas Sector, and the Agricultural Transformation programme.
19. We have improved on our investment environment; more
corporate bodies are investing in the Nigerian economy. Our Investment
Climate Reform Programme has helped to attract over N6.8 trillion local
and foreign direct investment commitments.
20. Nigeria has become the preferred destination for investment
in Africa. It is ranked first in the top 5 host economies for Foreign
Direct Investment (FDI) in Africa, accounting for over 20 per cent of
total FDI flows into the continent. We have streamlined bureaucratic
activities at the ports to ensure greater efficiency in the handling of
ports and port-related businesses. Specifically, we have drastically
reduced the goods clearing period in our ports from about six weeks to
about one week and under. We have an ultimate target of 48 hours.
21. We have put in place, a new visa policy that makes it
easier for legitimate investors to receive long stay visas. We have
achieved a 24-hour timeline for registration of new businesses, leading
to the registration of close to 7, 000 companies within the second
quarter of 2012.
22. The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has
disclosed that, as at July 2012, 249 new members across the country had
joined the Association, and that capacity utilization has also improved.
The multiplier effect of this development on our job creation programme
cannot be over-emphasized.
23. In the last two years, we have put in place structures for
an upgrade of the country’s health sector, to promote in every respect,
the individual citizen’s right to quality, affordable and accessible
healthcare.
24. In this regard, we are devoting resources under the Subsidy
Reinvestment Program (SURE-P) to reducing malaria incidents,
dramatically reducing maternal and child mortality, and eradicating
polio.
25. Fellow Nigerians, in recent times, we have witnessed
serious security challenges in parts of our country. We have taken
pro-active measures to check the menace. This has included constant
consultation and collaboration with our neighbours and other friendly
nations on issues relating to internal and cross border security, and
the sharing of information on smuggling and illegal dealing in small
arms and light weapons.
26. Our security agencies are constantly being strengthened and
repositioned for greater efficiency. Many Nigerians have acknowledged
that there has been a significant decline in the spate of security
breaches.
27. While expressing our condolences to the affected families,
let me reiterate the commitment of this Administration to ensure the
safety of lives and property of all Nigerians.
28. Even as we remain focused on the issue of security, the
fight against the scourge of corruption is a top priority of our
Administration. We are fighting corruption in all facets of our
economy, and we are succeeding. We have put an end to several decades of
endemic corruption associated with fertilizer and tractor procurement
and distribution. We have exposed decades of scam in the management of
pensions and fuel subsidy, and ensured that the culprits are being
brought to book.
29. In its latest report, Transparency International (TI) noted
that Nigeria is the second most improved country in the effort to curb
corruption.
30. We will sustain the effort in this direction with an even
stronger determination to strengthen the institutions that are
statutorily entrusted with the task of ending this scourge.
31. I have given my commitment of non-interference in the work
of the relevant agencies and I am keeping my word. What we require is
the full cooperation of all tiers of government, and the public,
especially civil society and the media.
32. This Administration has also introduced for the first time
in Nigeria’s history, a Performance Contract System for all Ministers,
and other officials of government. This is to further place emphasis on
performance, efficiency, and service delivery.
33. Fellow Nigerians, our determined efforts on several fronts
not-withstanding, our country still faces a number of challenges.
34. Those challenges should not deter us. In the last few
weeks, for example, many of our communities have been ravaged by floods,
resulting in the loss of lives and property, and the displacement of
persons.
35. I want to reassure all affected Nigerians that I share in
their grief, and our Administration is taking steps to address these
incidents, in collaboration with the States and Local Governments.
36. I have received the interim Report of the Presidential team
that I set up to assess the flooding situation across the country.
37. The Federal Government has taken measures to assist the
affected States, while considering long term measures to check future
reoccurrence.
38. We must continue to work together, confidently and
faithfully, to ensure that our country’s potentials are realised to the
fullest; that our dreams are translated into reality; and that our goals
are achieved.
39. Let me reiterate that our administration is committed to
the pursuit of fundamental objectives of an open society: the pursuit of
freedom, security and prosperity for the Nigerian people, and the rule
of law.
40. In the next few days, I shall lay before the National
Assembly the 2013 Federal Budget Proposal so that deliberations can
commence in earnest on the key policies, programmes and projects that
will mark a decisive year for our development and transformation.
41. I have no doubt that by the time I address you on our next
independence anniversary, many of our reform efforts would have yielded
even better results.
42. Over the years, several leaders have built on the
foundation laid by our Founding Fathers. The baton is now in our hands.
Let me assure all Nigerians that we shall not fail.
43. I am confident that Nigeria will continue to be a source of
pride to its citizens; to Africa and the Black Race and to humanity; a
land that is known for progress, freedom, peace and the promotion of
human dignity.
44. May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. May God bless you all.
LAGOS — EMINENT Nigerians, yesterday, took a dispassionate peep into
the topsy-turvy journey of Nigeria into nationhood 52 years after
independence and returned a grim verdict: There is nothing to celebrate
because the country is hanging on the precipice of disintegration amid
worsening poverty among the citizenry. They dissected the causes of the
country’s stunted development and proffered solutions.

In clear terms, they said there was urgent need to deepen the
country’s fragile unity, address lingering insecurity, decaying health
and educational facilities and epileptic power supply among others.
They also agreed that in spite of mounting challenges, the country would
not implode.
Among those, who spoke on the issue were former Chairman of the
Nigeria Economic Summit Group, Prof. Anya O Anya; Second Republic
Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Richard Akinjide; Second
Republic member of the House of Representatives, Dr Junaid Mohammed;
Governors Babatunde Fashola of Lagos and Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State.
Others include Anglican Archbishop of Lagos Province, Most Rev.
Adebola Ademowo; Mrs Doyin Abiola; former Lagos State Attorney General
and Justice Commissioner, Professor Yemi Osinbajo; Senator Gbenga
Ashafa; Rep. Charles Odedo; Bishop of Egba Diocese, Anglican Communion,
Rev. Bishop Emmanuel Adekunle and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) among
others.
While Akinjide attributed the country’s stunted growth to human
factor and bad leadership, Junaid identified the first military coup of
1966 as the genesis of the crises and accused successive governments of
ruining the country.

We’ ve put the cart before the horse — Ademowo

Most Rev Ademowo said: “I see Nigeria’s 52 years as a very
challenging stage of creation; but in truism, we have put the cart
before the horse, making attempts at living before creation. And because
of this, the country has passed and is passing through very burly
rings… Our country is becoming one of the most dangerous places on
earth.
“In this country, we experience militia killings, brutal attacks and
bombings. Amidst all, Nigeria is still one through the special grace of
God. The country is too great to shred into pieces all in the name of
greed, ethnicism, nepotism, religion, etc.
“In view of the above, our country is daily moving towards total
political, economic and social collapse, and disintegration and the
situation must be arrested before it is too late.”

Nigerians must keep hope alive —Ashafa

To Senator Ashafa, Nigerians must keep hope alive even though there is nothing to celebrate as of now.
Urging leaders to take stock of events in the country and carry out
an honest and candid appraisal of the situation, he said: “We must admit
that we are in a mess and not by making nostalgic and inspirational
speeches on October 1 every year about the “labours of our heroes past,”
pat each other on the back and congratulating one another on our
independence.

Parochial sectional interests must be dislodged—Tinubu

National leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Asiwaju Bola
Tinubu in his statement on the nation’s 52nd independence anniversary
urged Nigerians to refocus on their country and rededicate themselves to
its development, saying :“Nigeria, our dear country, could be passing
through a very difficult time now, but these are not problems we cannot
collectively solve, if we all put our minds to them.”
Tinubu said one of the burning challenges was that of a constitution
to make Nigeria a true federation and correct all the structural
imbalances that have resulted in mutual distrust and slowed down
economic growth and prosperity. He called for the strengthening of our
various institutions to serve the interests of the citizenry and not
personal political interests.
According to him, ”the sustenance of our democracy is important. The
can do spirit of Nigerians must be harnessed. Parochial sectional
interests must be dislodged. And we must work collectively for peace
and stability of the nation.”

Amosun wants synergy between leaders, followers

In Abeokuta, Governor Amosun called for a synergy between Nigerian
leaders and followers to move the country forward. Speaking to reporters
after a church service to mark the 52nd Independence Day celebration,
he absolved leaders of full responsibility for the country’s woes at 52,
noting that followers too should be part of the blame.

He said: ”That is why there is this need for a result-oriented and
positive synergy between the leaders and the followers for us to get
over the woes. Yes, it is true that leadership has a role to play in the
challenges we are facing now. The country ought to grow beyond this
level we found ourselves. The type of leaders will ultimately determine
the road to progress, but that notwithstanding, the followers’ angle
is also very important.”

We must reclaim our pre-eminent status in Africa —Fashola

On his part, Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State said it was time
for Nigerians to halt the slide, reclaim their pre-eminent status in
Africa and re-new their commitment to the Nigerian project to actualise
the dreams of their founding fathers.
Fashola, speaking on the state of the nation, said in the context of
the African continent being the next investment destination of the
world, Nigeria should rise and take the lead in reaping the economic
benefits of that reality.
He also called on Nigerians to be sober, humble and listen more to
those they have entrusted with authority, adding that if those in
authority fail to perform, Nigerians have the chance to throw them out
during the next election.
Fashola expressed delight that in the last 48 hours, Nigerians had
been asking very honest questions as to whether we, as a people, are the
problem or the nation itself.
He said: “This is not the worst place to live on earth and I can tell
you that. Let us take the financial issues for instance, the Spanish
government raised its taxes by 52 per cent, Italy has raised its tax by
60 per cent. Italians are leaving their country. That is not our
position here. People are being struck by earthquakes, Tsunami, but we
have arable land for farming here. There are challenges here alright but
they should be seen as building blocks for us to aspire to greater
things.”

Why Nigeria is still crawling — Anya, Osinbajo, Abiola

Prof. Anya, Osinbajo and Abiola at an Independence Anniversary
Lecture, entitled: “Nigeria at 52: Embracing Peace and Unity,” organised
by the Cosmopolitan Women’s Club, CWC, in Lagos, weekend, identified
corruption, quota system, misplacement of priorities, non-patriotism,
over reliance on oil, and inequitable distribution of the country’s
wealth among other as factors hindering the country’s growth.
Anya, who was the guest speaker at the occasion, attributed the
sectarian crises leading to blood-letting in the country to the
inequitable sharing of the nation’s resources by the British
colonialists.
He said: “Today, the contemporary Nigeria could best be described as a
knife-edge. All these travails could be traced to the act of the
British colonialists in milking resources from the then Southern
Protectorate to enrich the Northern Protectorate. The shaky political
structure and sharing formula have been the cause of all the sectarian
crises in Nigeria today.”

On quota system

The former university teacher said the quota system, which
establishes that leaders must emerge based on some factors rather than
merit, portended doom for the nation, if not revisited.
Anya said: “After 52 years of Independence, Nigeria has produced 13
leaders, where nine are from the northern part of the country. These
northern leaders have been in power for 32 years of the country’s 52
years of existence. Amidst this long period in governance more than any
other region, the North has remained in abject poverty and
underdevelopment.”

Over-reliance on oil

He held that if Nigeria aims to join the comity of developed nations
within any stipulated time, she must stop relying on oil, since it’s
bound to deplete, adding: “Rather than over-depend on oil, which has
become a curse rather than blessing, the government must ensure it
educates its citizens on how to be productive and create wealth that
must be equitably distributed.”

The task ahead

On their part, Osinbajo and Abiola, who were discussants at the
event, opined that the myriads of challenges, such as corruption in
public and private offices, the Boko Haram insurgency, rot in the
education and health sectors bedevilling the nation after 52 years of
independence came as a result of the failure of the elite to chart a
positive direction for the development of the country.
Abiola blamed the tottering state of the nation on lack of
maintenance and sustenance culture. According to her, it’s a common
place in Nigeria to see projects of a previous administration abandoned
by an incoming administration no matter how positive it may be.

Political, economic space must be opened—TUC

In a statement to mark Nigeria’s 52 independence anniversary, the
Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, yesterday said only genuine talks
among ethnic nationalities in the country could halt the nation’s drift
into anarchy. It argued that the current insecurity challenge facing the
country posed the greatest threat to the nation’s unity since the end
of the civil war.
In the statement entitled: “Nigeria at 52: The Journey thus far”, TUC
President-General and Secretary General, Comrade Peter Esele and Chief
John Kolawole, respectively, declared that the political and economic
space must urgently be opened to build an inclusive nation that would
allow all to creatively contribute and participate in the hallowed
effort of nation building.
“A combination of deep internal political schisms and serial inept
but corrupt leadership despite the huge resources both human and
material robbed the nation of the various opportunities to transform
itself into a great nation that would deliver to her citizens the best
possible benefits.
This failure to get it right in these past years has foisted on the
people one of the greatest burdens of the contradiction of increasing
suffering and deprivation in the midst of increasing revenue to the
government; the syndrome of ‘rich dad, poor children.’”
“Access to basic social services – medical care, Education, Housing,
Food and Transport have all constricted over the years. Unemployment has
burgeoned and continued increasing, manufacturing continues to suffer
adversely and worse still, and there is an increasing threat to the
political stability of the nation posing serious danger to its corporate
existence.”
“The present security challenge posed by the unfortunate events in
the northern part of the country has presented the nation with the
greatest threat to dismemberment since after the civil war in 1970. It
has exacerbated the poverty in that region and has imposed massive
sufferings and deprivations on the hapless populace dislocating
thousands in the process.
As we mark this national day, TUC believes that our situation is not
hopeless and that we can stop this continued slide into anarchy. We
believe that we can reverse all these adversities and march back to the
path of greatness that has always been the destiny of this nation even
at conception.”
“We know that this will not be easy but the Congress is assured that
there is hope for this nation but it requires hard work and our
collective determination to make the necessary sacrifices and change
needed to generate the critical mass for development. It calls for the
people at the top to arise and take responsibility for the parlous state
of affairs and be determined to redeem the nation through a positive
change to leadership styles and objectives.
The nation must seize the opportunity presented by the current
centrifugal forces laying siege on the polity to forge a united and
progressive country that we can all be proud of.
This is the only way to put a lie to the desires of the various
criminal elements both local and international who seek the breakup of
Nigeria. We must be determined to prove them wrong. That is why we
believe that at no other time in our history than now do we require a
genuine and honest conversation between and amongst the diverse
cleavages and interests in country.”
“Our people deserve to be told the truth which is capable of throwing
increasing light on the affairs of the land and lifting the mood of
despondency that has enveloped us as a nation.
We therefore call on all political actors in Nigeria especially those
currently in position of authority to eschew all forms of greed as the
reverse portends greater danger to all Nigerians and Nigeria. The
Political and Economic space must urgently be opened to build an
inclusive nation that would allow all to creatively contribute and
participate in the hallowed effort of nation building.
The present trend that concentrates Political and Economic power in
the hands of a very few minority portends disaster and is therefore not
sustainable in the long run.”
“Let us use this period to remind the government that the People
remain the greatest asset of the nation. Building the people by
investing in them, creating a strong middle class and putting the
citizens back to work should be the best way to go. This is what will
eventually solve the security challenges, stabilise the polity and drive
progress.
The Congress therefore urges those in leadership positions to use
this occasion to seek the restoration of the people’s confidence in the
nation by also showing an unwavering loyalty and faith in its capacity
to become great again. The loyalty of the present leadership to the
Nigerian project is questionable.
Their children in different schools abroad questions their faith,
their insensitive trips abroad for medical care while the hospitals in
Nigeria remain comatose poses serious question about their commitment to
this country and their penchant for foreign properties and accounts
raises deep concerns in the minds of the citizenry. They must change
this perception by domesticating all their affairs during this
celebration for it to have a meaning.”

Exclusive Photos Of Davido's N140M House In Lekki (#Oluwaisinvolved)

20 Years Old Nigerian Artist, Davido just bought his first house. JUNEAU, Alaska -- An Alaska scientist whose observations of
drowned polar bears helped galvanize the global warming movement has
been reprimanded for improper release of government documents.
An Interior Department official said emails released by Charles
Monnett were cited by a federal appeals court in decisions to vacate
approval by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management of an oil and gas
company's Arctic exploration plan.
The official, Walter Cruickshank, deputy director of BOEM,
said in a memo that an inspector general's investigation contained
findings that Monnett had improperly disclosed internal government
documents, which he said were later used against the agency in court. He
also said the investigation made other findings in regards to Monnett's
conduct, but he wasn't taking action on those. He would not specify
those findings.
Cruickshank called Monnett's "misconduct very serious," and said any
future misconduct may lead to more severe discipline, including removal
from federal service.
Monnett was briefly suspended last year during an inspector general's
investigation into a polar bear research contract he managed. The
inspector general's report, which was released Friday, said its
investigation was set off by a complaint from an unidentified Interior
Department employee who alleged that Monnett wrongfully released
government records and that he and another scientist, Jeffrey Gleason,
intentionally omitted or used false data in an article they wrote on
polar bears. During that investigation, authorities also looked into the
procurement issue.
Jeff Ruch, executive director of the advocacy group Public Employees
for Environmental Responsibility, which has been involved in the matter
on Monnett's behalf, said Friday that the issue of the document release
did not even come up in investigators' questioning of Monnett.

He called the outcome "completely unexpected," and said Monnett is confused by it.
PEER, in a news release, said the email disclosure had nothing to do
with polar bear research but that it embarrassed the agency.
"We think he's owed an apology, but we're not going to hold our breath until he gets one," Ruch said.

Federal
investigators had said that Monnett helped a polar bear researcher
prepare a proposal even though he was the government official who
determined whether the proposal met minimum qualifications. PEER has
said that Monnett's handling of the study was proper and that Monnett,
instead, was being targeted for a 2006 article on drowned polar bears.
The article was based on observations that Monnett and Gleason made
in 2004 while conducting an aerial survey of bowhead whales. They saw
four dead polar bears floating in the water after a storm.
In the article, they said they were reporting, to the best of their
knowledge, the first observations of the bears floating dead and
presumed drowned while apparently swimming long distances. They wrote
that while polar bears are considered strong swimmers, long-distance
swims may exact a greater metabolic toll than standing or walking on ice
in better weather.
They said their findings suggested that drowning-related deaths of
polar bears may increase in the future "if the observed trend of
regression of pack ice and/or longer open water periods continues."
The article and related presentations helped to make the polar bear a symbol for the global warming movement.
According to the inspector general's report, investigators found that
Monnett and Gleason used an incomplete database as their primary source
of information to write the article, made conflicting statements to
investigators regarding the writing and editing process and understated
data in the manuscript. However, they found that the article had "little
or no impact" on a federal decision to extend special protections to
polar bears under the Endangered Species Act, according to the report.
A BOEM spokeswoman, Theresa Eisenman, said the findings in the report
do not support a conclusion that the scientists involved engaged in
"scientific misconduct."
Monnett's reprimand could be removed from his record in two years or less.
Ruch said Monnett has been told he will return to scientific work.

He is our ICON in this edition of Past Perfect. He takes us round his life as well as his passion to serve God. Enjoy
My background in Rutgers Graduate School of Management contributed to
my success story. Our success story was annouced to the Federal
Government of America. And we got what was called Presidential Mention
Award.
After a while, I was invited to work as consultant at Centre for
Management Development which was established to do a similar work to
what I did at New Jersey. The work was between the Federal Government of
Nigeria and the UNDP. It was an interesting endeavour.
The task was a tough one because I had to train some so-called
captians on the job. My duty was to train people to be independent and
not depending on the expatriate companies.
So, it was a tough assignment and just about that time, the issue of
indigenization of Nigerian businesses came up and about 90 percent of
successful businesses in Nigeria were owned by foreigners.
At that time, Obasanjo’s regime made it easy for us to have
indigenous companies owned by Nigerians. A law, known as the Nigerian
Enterprises Promotion Decree was established and the Nigerian
Enterprises were divided into three categories.
The first category provided for Nigerians to own 100 percent equity.
Category B allowed 60 percent of the equity of the capital to be
controlled by Nigerians while the foreigners held on to 40 percent and
category C allowed 40 percent to be sold to Nigerians while foreigners
controlled 60 percent.
So, our duty was to excite Nigerians to acquire some of these
companies. And the tools we were using were training and workshop for
Nigerians enterprenuers and some of the brochures were printed in
Yoruba, English, Hausa and Igbo. The programme was spread across the
country.
We also set up an Association of Management Consultants as well as
Institute of Individual Consultants which became my responsibility. All
these efforts were to compete with the foreign investors.
We were given assignments to recruit and train young graduates for a
year so as to become change agents. The centre ran for three years but
unfortunately, Nigerian bureaucracy destroyed it.
I also trained some Nigerian Bankers but the Manchester Business
School hijacked the programme in order to train other Africans. If only
we had continued that programme, Nigeria would have been a better
country.
I was called to the Lagos Stock Exchange as a change agent by Late
Chief Samuel Asabia. He interviewed me and after five minutes, he said,
“You are the man we have been looking for”.
And that was how I became Executive Director of the then Lagos Stock
Exchange in 1978. It became an interesting firm for Nigerians and the
name was changed to Nigerian Stock Exchange. Many companies were listed
on that platform but they were owned by foreigners. So, it became
imperative to have what is second tier market.
The listing requirement for the companies to be on that platform was
not stringent compared to what was obtainable on the NSE. And so, about
34 Nigerian small companies were listed on the second tier securities
market where they have access to equity fund for expansion and
modernisation. Eight of those companies became very successful and
graduated to the first tier market.
Another challenge was that the NSE was not digitalised and so, it was
very difficult to operate. As well, lack of finances disrupted the
system. But we were determined not to allow Nigerian bureaucracy kill
our dreams. We had what was called Automated Trading System which was
used to fast-track trade.
We also set up the Central Securities Clearing System, CSCS, which
caused a rapid change. We were also determined to minimize corruption
and make the market as transparent as possible.
In addition to the CSCS, there was Data Management Centre, DMC, which
means data can be digitalised, stored and retrievable at anytime.
That centre is the biggest in West Africa. It was used to gather
data from any part of Africa. And in case of fire incident, there is
something called back-ups both in Nigeria and outside the country.
I was in the NSE for 24 years. I left the Stock Exchange in 1999 and
one of the things that appealed to me was to be a servant of God. My
parents were attending a church called St. Joseph Chosen Church of God.
I started my education at Ahmaydiya school where I was taught some
Arabic doctrines after which I crossed to Holy Cross Primary in Benin
City and there, I hooked on to the Catholic faith.
Out of 34 students, I was the second to the smallest in the school.
But, I was given responsibilities and there was no a time that I got
second position in the class throughout my stay in school except the
time I had yellow fever and I took the third position.
After our final examination, I was retained to teach at the school.
When the results were released, I was the fifth in the nation. In those
days, best first ten students were given State Scholarship and I was
enlisted.
As a young man, the first challenge I had was when my mother took ill
for 10 years. She was bedridden for two years and so, the children were
bathing her on the bed. We ran out of money for medical services.
My father didn’t have money to pay my school fees. I sat for Common
Entrance twice and I passed but there was no money to go to school. My
mother then advised my father to allow me go to school. So, he borrowed
money and used his three years salaries as collateral. Later, I went to
Loyola College.
The most painful experience of my life was when my father couldn’t
pay my school fees and I was unable to graduate with my mates.
Everything I became in life was prophesied to me in the church in 1956
and the prophesy came 21 years after. And so, I am an instrument of
God.
My father sold his Rubber and Cocoa Plantation to native doctors but
there was nothing positive. But a man of God who was also the founder
of St. Joseph Chosen Church in Sapele prayed for my mother and she was
healed. That miracle converted my parents to the church. And my
mother became a prophetess.
We were in Benin City but the pastor was somewhere in Sapele. He told
us how God revealed to a vision of a dying woman in Benin City. He
mentioned her name as Hannah and that was my mother’s name.
The pastor rode on a bicycle on a distance of 41 kilometres. He prayed and about 6pm, my mother was healed.
After my undergraduate studies, I became an elder in the church. But I
was ordained as an Apostle in 1991. The church came in existence in
1947. Today, it has about 160 branches including seven in Italy, two in
the United States, one in South Africa, Liberia and two in France. It
consists of family of Christians who believe in divine healing.
My eight children were gave birth to in the church maternity without
any medication. And I have been living for 54 years without using any
medication. My parents were very poor but they survived.
I met my wife first at the University of Ibadan. But, when it was
time for us to get married, the prophesy came and everything went as it
was foretold. My mother also prophesied the number of children I was
going to have.
She said, the first five children would be girls and the sixth child
would be a boy and other two more. And it came to pass. It was after we
had the eighth child that I remembered the prophesy.

Undergraduate imprisoned for homosexuality with seven-year old boy

For allegedly indulging in homosexuality with a seven-year old Isaac
Chivirter Shamigah, a 20 year old 300 level Accounting student of Benue
State University, Makurdi, Ortyom Dyorugh has been thrown behind bars at
the Makurdi Medium Security Prison by a Makurdi Court.
Dyorugh who was arraigned before a Chief Magistrate Court in Makurdi
for alleged gross indecency was said to have forced Shamigah to commit
the act with him at the Judges Quarters area of Makurdi town where they
both lived.
According to the First Information Report, FIR, which was filed by
Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Patrick Sunday, the accused took Shamigah
to an uncompleted building within the vicinity of Judges Quarters where
he forced him into sucking his penis with the threat to kill him if he
refused to do his bidding.
The Prosecutor further told the court that the alleged sucking of
Dyorugh’s genital resulted in the release of sperm into Shamigah’s mouth
on three different occasions after which he reiterated his threat to
kill Shamigah if he revealed the unholy act.
The young boy was said to have exhibited strange behaviors after the act which attracted his parents’ attention and inquisition.
After some prompting however, Shamigah opened up to his parents,
narrating his ordeal in the hands of the under graduate and the threat
to his life if he opened up to anybody.
After listening to his son, the boy’s father, Rev Clement Shamigah
reported the matter to the Criminal Investigation Bureau, CIB of the
Benue State Police Command and Dyorugh was subsequently arrested.
When the case came up under Section 285 of the Penal Code, Dyorugh
denied the allegation. Trial Chief Magistrate Mrs. Lilian Tsumba

Mobil Producing Nigeria, a subsidiary of the U.S. multinational
ExxonMobil has suspended its clean up of the Ibeno coastline in Akwa
Ibom which was devastated by a major spill from its operations on August
13, exposing the host community and environment to health risks.

Management of ExxonMobil has denied knowledge of the source of the
spill, which the oil spill agency says it has been investigating since
the middle of August.

Chief Willian Hennry Mkpa, a community leader in Ibeno, Akwa Ibom, has
criticized the suspension of the clean up by the oil firm and questioned
the double standards of multinationals operating within the country.

“This has once again shown the hypocrisy of ExxonMobil that claims to
operate (with a) high safety and environment policy... Would they do the
same in their home country?

He continued: “It is disheartening to note that Mobil never cared about
the health of the community while it suspended clean up due to cost
considerations... their major interest is to cut cost at the expense of
human beings... For two weeks work was stopped because they refused to
engage enough hands.

“The result is that the level of contamination has worsened because the
water current is dynamic and has washed the oil in diverse directions,”
Mkpa said

National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) had ordered
Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN) to clean up the coastline within its Qua
Iboe oil fields.

Also speaking on the suspension of the spill clean up, Chief Okon
Akpanowong, a representative Ibeno Paramount Ruler said that he
participated in the meetings with officials of MPN on the clean up
exercise but regretted that no action had been taken two weeks after.

"It was resolved two weeks ago amongst all stakeholders, namely Mobil,
the community and regulators including the Ministry of Environment that
the clean up be extended for additional 10 days.

We therefore do not know why the extension has not yet resumed, we
signed all the papers and there is no reason to justify this delay of
two weeks.

“The impact on the coastline environment is serious because it affects
our fishing population, the grasses along the sea coast and aquatic life
as well,” he said.

Akpanowong further explained that the abandoned spill impacted site had
contaminated new areas that were originally not affected due to the
changing direction of sea currents.

MPN, in a press statement, had accepted clean up of the coastline as directed by the oil spills management agency, NOSDRA.

However, the company kept sealed lips and has declined to comment on
the lingering uncleaned coastline and its impact on public health.

Investigations by SaharaReporters revealed that Nigeria’s Petroleum
Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, booked and paid for two rooms in two
separate high-cost hotels during the four nights she spent in New York
City during the just concluded United Nations General Assembly.
Impeccable sources within the Presidency and the delegation of the
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) disclosed that the
minister’s two rooms were booked under a pseudonym.
Saharareporters discovered that Joe Mordi, one of the minister’s
closest aides who works at the NNPC office in London, booked her into a
one-bedroom suite at Four Seasons Hotel located at 57 East 57th Street,
New York.
When SaharaReporters inquired at the hotel, a staff said that the
suite cost $5,000 per night. Ms. Alison-Madueke, who is known around
Presidency circles as “Prime Minister,” was also booked into another
room at the Pierre Hotel on 2 East 61st Street in New York where
President Goodluck Jonathan lodged during his stay in New York.
SaharaReporters found out that her room on the 28th floor of the Pierre
Hotel cost Nigerian tax payers $3,000 per night. There were also
additional charges in taxes and service fees.
Ms. Alison-Madueke arrived in New York in style on a private jet on
Monday from London where she had made a brief stop to continue treatment
for an undisclosed ailment. She is billed to return to London today.
President Jonathan left New York last night around 6:00 p.m. and has
arrived in Nigeria very early today.
SaharaReporters also learnt that, apart from the lavish double
accommodation enjoyed by the Petroleum minister in two of New York
City’s most expensive hotels, her delegation of seven NNPC officials
also engaged in other acts of reckless spending. “The NNPC hired ten
limousines to ferry its 7 officials, including the General Managing
Director,” said our source. Five of the limousines, rented for $1,800
each per day, were stationed permanently in front of the Pierre Hotel
while another five were put to the service of the NNPC officials at the
Four Seasons.
The Nigerian delegation’s profligacy during the New York trip earned
the attraction of America’s mainstream media. New York-based National
Broadcasting Corporation ((NBC), one of the top three television
networks in the US, yesterday reported that African delegates from the
poorest countries stayed in some of the most expensive hotels and
shopped in high-priced retail stores during the UN General Assembly. The
network focused on delegates from such countries as Togo, Swaziland,
and Nigeria. SaharaReporters had earlier reported that President
Jonathan was quartered at the Pierre Hotel in a suite that cost $10,000
per night.
International measurements of social indices routinely rank Nigeria
as one of the world’s least developed countries. Some 70% of Nigerians
live on less than 2 dollars per day. “It is sad that the mindless waste
of public resources in New York by President Jonathan and other Nigerian
officials was happening at a time when two million Nigerians have been
displaced from their homes by ravaging floods,” said an Abuja-based
civil society activist.

The
IG made the startling revelation at the opening of the renovated
Peacekeeping Hall at the headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force in
Abuja.
“This is the only country in the world that police are
least paid; this is the only country in the world that the police
welfare is least considered.
“Our officers and men have made
Nigeria proud at all times and at all places they served and are
serving. If we were able to do it outside, why are we failing here? We
are not able to do it here because of the lack of equipment,” he said.

The Nigeria Police Force in its renewed
determination to rid the society of crimes and all forms of criminality,
between 22nd and 28th of August, 2012, recorded a major break-through,
as operatives of the IGP’s Special Taskforce on Heinous Crimes successfully raided some notorious and dangerous criminal hide-outs in Kaduna.

The Special Taskforce, working on a tip-off, in reaction
to the upsurge in incidents of car theft in some parts of the country,
proceeded to Kaduna State on 22nd August, 2012, where it smashed and
arrested a 3-man syndicate that specialises in car theft. The syndicate
made disclosures that led to the recovery of Nineteen (19) stolen vehicles of various makes and brands.
Information of this recovery has since been disseminated to all the
thirty-seven (37) State Police Commands for circulation to the public,
to enable persons whose vehicles were stolen to come forth for necessary
identification and possible collection. The vehicles recovered are
shown in the table below.

Though the runabout-crossover known as the Chevrolet Trax debuted in the interwebs in May,
Paris was our first opportunity to see for ourselves the CUV that the
U.S. will not get. Riding on the same platform that underpins the Buick Encore and derived from the Sonic subcompact, the Trax is just the latest entrant to join the cute-ute craze currently going on in Europe.

The Trax is available with one of three engines, starting with a
turbocharged 1.4-liter inline four cylinder delivering 140 horsepower
and 149 pound-feet of torque. Also available is a 1.6-liter gas engine
and a 1.7-liter turbodiesel inline four. Though little information is
given on the naturally aspirated 1.6-liter mill, the turbodiesel is
rated at a "that's-more-like-it" 130 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of
torque.

Both the 1.4-liter turbo and the 1.7-liter diesel are available with a
six-speed manual transmission that comes with stop-start. All-wheel
drive is optional, though it isn't immediately clear if it's available
in all engine and transmission configurations.

Uprated trims will get Chevrolet's MyLink
infotainment system, operable through a seven-inch color touchscreen. A
navigation app will be available for this setup in early 2013, much
like the system that will be available on the Spark. With rear seats folded flat, the Trax provides 48 cubic feet of cargo space.

No word yet on pricing or availability from Chevrolet.
All we know is, it won't be sold in the States, and that strikes us as
something of a missed opportunity. After all, there would appear to be a
lot of space under the larger Equinox
CUV at Chevy dealers, and the vehicle's dimensions and humble
powerplants seem a lot more in-tune with the Bowtie brand than the
Encore does with Buick's upwardly mobile intentions.

Bowing to pressure from consumers and advocacy groups, major car rental
companies have agreed to end the practice of renting cars that have been
recalled for safety problems and are supporting legislation that will end the practice.

Enterprise Holdings, which had been pushing back against legislation,
said customers emailed and called the company asking Enterprise to back
the bill.

Consumer pressure "made us reconsider our position," said Laura Bryant,
communications director for Enterprise. "We thought federal regulation
and oversight was not needed ... The consumers told us they would be
more comfortable with greater oversight."

It was a car rented from Enterprise that ignited the movement that led
to the legislation. In 2004, two sisters, Raechel and Jacqueline Houck,
were driving in a rented Chrysler PT Cruiser when they lost control of the car and slammed into an 18-wheeler. They died at the scene.

The PT Cruiser,
which they'd rented to take a trip home to visit their mom, Cally, had
been recalled for problems with a hose that carried steering wheel
fluid. The fluid could leak, leaving drivers unable to control their cars.

The Houck family didn't know they car had been recalled until weeks
after the accident. A loophole in recall laws allowed rental car
companies to keep recalled cars in their fleets, without repairs, indefinitely.

Legislators introduced a bill to the Senate on Thursday that would keep
recalled rental cars off the road. It's taken two years for Sen. Barbara
Boxer and Sen. Chuck Schumer to get the majority of the rental car
industry on board. As of Thursday, the bill has the backing of all four
major rental companies – Enterprise, which owns National and Alamo,
Hertz/Advantage, Avis/Budget and Dollar/Thrifty, according to a
statement released by Sen. Barbara Boxer. Those companies comprise 93
percent of the rental car market.

The bill was called a "major win for safety on our roadways and in our communities" by NHTSA administrator David Strickland.

Although the companies have agreed to keep recalled cars in the garage,
until the law passes, there is nothing prohibiting them from renting
those cars to consumers.

"Believe it or not, it's still not against the law to rent a car with a
serious defect," Schumer said on a conference call to discuss the new
bill. "When consumers go to the rental car counter, they shouldn't have
to worry about what they're getting. Today we are solving this major
loophole in the law once and for all."

Schumer said he hopes the bill will pass during the end-of-year lame duck session following the November elections.

"I remain very hopeful and optimistic" that the legislation will pass, Cally Houck, Raechel and Jacqueline's mother, told AOL Autos.
"But it's not done yet ... I remain a bit cynical, based on my history
lobbying for this issue. But we do have a consensus of all the
industry's major players."

The rental companies had argued that they already have, in the past few
years, put policies in place that keep recalled cars off the road. Rich
Broome, senior vice president of communications at Hertz, said recalled
cars are flagged in the computer system as recalled and are taken out of
the pool of eligible rental cars. Any employee who rents a recalled car
could be fired, he said.

Enterprise also has a similar practice in place, said Bryant, which led
the company to believe it didn't need any oversight from the government
to keep its customers safe.

"At some point, you realize that if this is what your customers want, you need to deliver," she said.
MINNEAPOLIS — A gunman killed four people inside a Minneapolis
sign-making business before turning the weapon on himself, authorities
said early Friday.
Officers summoned Thursday afternoon by a 911 call discovered the
victims' bodies shortly after arriving at Accent Signage Systems Inc.,
located in a residential area in the city's north side, according to a
statement from police spokesman Sgt. Stephen McCarty.
"When officers arrived and entered the business to assist
with the evacuation of employees, give aid to the victims and to search
for the suspect, they found four victims dead from apparent gunshot
wounds," the statement said.
Four other people were wounded, including three critically.
No details were released about the gunman, other than he was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
During a news conference Thursday night, Minneapolis Police Deputy
Chief Kris Arneson wouldn't specify how many people had been killed,
saying only that "several" victims were found dead inside. She said
police never fired at the gunman, but she didn't release other details –
including the gunman's possible motive or whether he had worked at the
company.
Hennepin County Medical Center was treating the four patients,
including three men in critical condition, according to a hospital
spokeswoman. The fourth victim suffered minor injuries, police said.
None of the victims' names has been released.
Someone from inside the building called 911 around 4:30 p.m. to
report the shootings, police said. The first officers on the scene
quickly began evacuating people from the business and closed off several
blocks.
Dozens of squad cars and SWAT officers swarmed the neighborhood
Thursday afternoon, and traffic was stopped on a nearby bridge along
Penn Avenue, where officers had rifles drawn and pointed at the business
and a park below.
By Thursday evening, police vehicles were still surrounding the
business. People from the neighborhood milled around but deputies kept
them back.
Marques Jones, 18, of Minneapolis, said he was outside a building
down the street having his high school senior pictures taken when he and
his photographer heard gunfire that sounded close.
"We heard about four to five gunshots," Jones said. "We were shocked
at what happened and we just looked at each other. We all just took off
running to our vehicles."
According to Accent Signage Systems' website, the company makes
interior signage and lists its founder as Reuven Rahamim. A phone
messages left at the business was not immediately returned, and a woman
who answered the phone at Rahamim's residential listing declined
comment.
The company employed 28 people as of July, according to a feature on
the business in Finance & Commerce, a local business publication.
The paper reported that U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce Francisco
Sanchez visited it in August in a trip focused on exporting and praised
the company for its innovation.
The company developed a patented technology for producing signs in
Braille and had licensed the technology to companies in 38 countries,
the newspaper said.
Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said employees who were working when the
shootings occurred were together and being cared for Thursday evening.
"We are deeply sorry about what has happened here," he said, calling the shootings "a horrible tragedy."
More than ever,
scientific research is confirming the fundamental responsibility stress can
play in causing and aggravating different physical and emotional disorders.
In the June 6, 1983 issue of Time Magazine, the cover story labeled stress,
"The Epidemic of the Eighties." It also said that stress is our
leading health problem. And there is no doubt whatsoever that the world has
become even more complicated and stressful in the past twenty-five years
  since that article was written.

Many surveys indicate that most adults perceive themselves to be under a
great deal of stress. Authorities in the field estimate that 75 - 90 percent
of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress related problems.

Most
adults report that their job is the major cause of their stress. And stress
levels have also increased in children as well as the elderly population for
reasons including: Peer pressures that often lead to everything from
cigarette smoking to drug and alcohol abuse; the wearing away of family and
religious values and ties; increased crime; threats to personal safety; and
last but not least social isolation and loneliness.

Stress contributes to diabetes, ulcers, low back and neck pain, hypertension,
strokes, heart attacks, and ulcers. This is because of the increased sympathetic
nervous system activity and a flood of cortisol, adrenaline, and other
hormones. Chronic stress has been associated with impaired immune system
resistance. Stress can contribute to anxiety, depression, and its varied
  effects on the body's organs.

The American Heritage Dictionary defines "stress" as
  follows:
"To subject to physical or mental pressure, tension, or strain"

It defines "tension" as follows:
"Mental, emotional, or nervous strain"

It defines "anxiety" as follows:
"A state of uneasiness and apprehension, as about future
  uncertainties"

And it defines "depression" as follows:
"The condition of feeling sad or despondent"

It defines "clinical depression" as follows:
"A psychiatric disorder characterized by an inability to concentrate,
insomnia, loss of appetite, anhedonia, feelings of extreme sadness, guilt,
helplessness and hopelessness, and thoughts of death."

One thing is for sure; our thoughts can be the chief source of our feelings
of stress, anxiety and depression. In other words, what we think about, and
our attitudes and points of view about our experiences create our feelings.
So if we can learn to change our thoughts, attitudes, and points of view,
then we can eliminate our feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression and
replace them with a more positive state of being.

Since the beginning of time, people have sought out methods for releasing
stress. The pharmaceutical industry seems to have a pill for everything. And
to that end the industry has developed a wide array of tranquilizers from
Valium to Xanax. If you choose to utilize drugs for relief, please be sure to
read the fine print and learn about the side effects, which often include
addiction and dependency. Unfortunately, these types of drugs attempt to
treat the symptoms, rather than the cause. So as soon as one stops ingesting
  them, the symptoms can return.

A more intelligent way of eliminating tension, stress, anxiety, and
depression is to work on the root cause, which as I said above, is usually
our thought processes. Now, here is the good news. The very essence of
hypnosis is relaxation. The AMA accepted hypnosis in 1958 as an effective
method of treating stress and stress related symptoms. And unlike drugs,
there are absolutely no negative side effects.

Hypnosis is the Alpha level of consciousness. It's the daydream like
state of mind that we pass through as we fall asleep at night. And we pass
through it again as we awaken in the morning. There are hundreds of different
ways that we can guide ourselves into this state of tranquility, from
progressive relaxation to visual imagery to listening to hypnosis CD's.

Once in the hypnotic state, we can communicate with our unconscious mind,
which is the seat of our emotions. And it becomes easier to accept new ideas
and points of view that can help us to dissipate anxiety, or even prevent it
from occurring in the first place.

NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), which is a modern form of
hypnosis, offers several excellent techniques for eliminating stress. Perhaps
the most effective technique is called the "swish" pattern – or the
"flash" pattern. After using this technique, your unconscious will
automatically use negative, stress producing mental images, as triggers for
relaxation producing mental images. In other words, your stressors will
  automatically trigger relaxation!

TO SUMMARIZE
Tension, stress, anxiety, and depression can be triggered
by our thoughts. So by changing our attitude and point of view towards our
situation and our experiences, we can eliminate these feelings at the source.
Hypnosis and NLP are natural tools that we can use to help us change our
attitude and point of view to quickly eliminate the root cause of these
  negative feelings.

In his soon-to-be released tell-all book, Arnold
Schwarzenegger revisits the infidelity and scandal that ruined his
25-year marriage to Maria Shriver -- describing the day she confronted
him about his love child while in couples counseling, reports the New York Daily News.
In "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story,"
the actor and politician writes that Shriver waited until Jan. 4, 2011
-- one day after he ended his position as California governor -- to
confront him about her long-held suspicions that he had been unfaithful.
“The minute we sat down, the therapist turned to me and said, ‘Maria
wanted to come here today and to ask about a child — whether you
fathered a child with your housekeeper Mildred,’ ” the 65-year-old actor
candidly revealed in the book.
Schwarzenegger explains that he believed he and Shriver had begun
counseling as a way to deal with their transition from public to private
life, but when faced with the allegation, he decided to come clean
about his decades-old affair with his housekeeper Mildred Baena and the son he secretly fathered 15 years ago.
“I told the therapist, ‘It’s true,’" he wrote, and said he then
started begging Shriver for forgiveness, telling her that he "screwed
up." According to ABC News,
the actor desperately tried to save himself by telling her that she
was the "perfect wife," and that he was still "turned on" by her. His
groveling didn't work, and Shriver separated from him, and later filed for divorce.
In the book, which hits stores on Oct. 1, Schwarzenegger also reveals
that he had sex with Baena in 1996 in the family guest house while
Shriver and their children were away on vacation and he was in town
filming "Batman and Robin." He also confesses that for years he tried to
convince himself that Baena's husband was the father of their son,
Joseph, but as the boy grew up the resemblance between the two was too
hard to ignore.
"I realized there was little doubt that he was my son," he wrote.
The "Terminator" actor reveals many things in his memoir, but
perhaps the most surprising is that he believes he and Shriver will one
day get back together:
“You can call this denial,” he wrote, “but it’s the way my mind works.”

Soldiers Discover Abandoned Baby on Side of Road in Afghanistan
A newborn baby girl left abandoned on the side of the road in
southern Afghanistan has been discovered by a group of Polish soldiers.
The soldiers came upon the baby, who they have named Pola, after
Poland, wrapped in a towel on Wednesday while they were checking a route
near their Waghez military base for safety, Defense Ministry spokesman
Janusz Walczak told The Associated Press.
The group of soldiers was first suspicious when they discovered the
baby, as there is a risk of hidden roadside bombs across Afghanistan.
It is still unclear who left baby Pola on the side of the road. The
AP reported that there was no one found in a mile radius of where the
baby was discovered.
After the troops found her, she was brought to a medical center at
their base. The soldiers then bought the girl baby formula, a bottle and
a bib.
Want to learn how to blow-dry your hair like a pro? Here, from a
hairstylist to the stars, are a few simple tips on how to get frizz-free
results.

My secret “If I were a celebrity” fantasy
is to have my hair blown out every morning. I know it would probably fry my
hair, but wouldn’t it be amazing if every day was a good hair day? For now, I
save the blow-outs for special occasions, and I go to Danielle Lopreore, who
works at the Fred Segal Salon here in LA. Do you wish you could achieve
salon-perfect hair that doesn't fall flat as soon as you get home? Here are the
tips Danielle suggests on how to do just that:

Start with wet hair. You
can gently towel-dry so it’s not dripping wet, but don’t rub too hard (it’ll
get tangled). For the smoothest, most long-lasting results, avoid “rough
drying” — fluffing the hair with your hands while drying. While it
saves time, it makes hair frizzy.

Don’t use too much
product. If your hair is fine or oily, it’ll become limp. Put a bit of product
    only the ends, if needed.

Divide your hair in
sections, and start in front because this area tends to dry the quickest. Using
a round brush and plenty of tension, aim the blow-dryer at the roots and move
it along the length of your hair to the ends. Heating the hair in the direction
of the cuticle helps keep it smooth and fights frizz.

For volume and height,
hold each section up and in the opposite direction from the way you want it to
lie. For extra bounce, pin each section up after drying to let it cool. This
helps set the curl so so your hair doesn’t go flat the minute you walk out the
    door.

To make your blow-out
last, spray your hair lightly and then leave it alone. Avoid brushing it out or
running your fingers through it — this will break up the bounce and
    make it go limp.

After his presidency is finished-whether it is this year or in 2016-President Barack Obama said today that he would like to work with kids in the next phase of his life.

Obama was asked during a taping of ABC's "The View" today in New York
City what he sees himself doing after he is no longer president.

"Well, you know, first things first here," Obama
said to laughter. "There's all kinds of things I want to do in the
second term, uh, putting folks back to work, making sure our schools are
up to snuff."

"And then?" Barbara Walters, host of the show, said.

"You know, in a post-presidency, the thing that I think I would enjoy
most is spending time working with kids," Obama said. "I love teaching, I
miss teaching, and you know, I'm not sure it would necessarily be in a
classroom, but the idea of being able to go around in various cities and
helping to create mentorships, and apprenticeships, giving young people
the sense of possibility and opportunity, and using whatever spotlight I
can shine to show how much incredible talent there is out there."

Obama said that one of the things he has most enjoyed about being
president is meeting smart, energetic young people who have ideas for
making a better world. He hopes to work with more young people after his
term-or terms-are finished.

"So making sure that we're reaching all those kids and giving them a
sense, here's what's possible to you, let's open up some doors for them,
something along those lines, I think I'd really enjoy doing," Obama
said.

Obama appeared on the show with his wife, Michelle Obama, who also discussed her plans. Both she and President Obama reiterated that she would not be making any bid for public office.

"She should run for office, but she says she doesn't want to," the president said.

"Yeah, no," the first lady said to laughter.

"I mean, Michelle would be terrific," the president said, "but temperamentally I just don't think…"

"No, it's absolutely true," Michelle continued. "It takes a lot of
patience to be the president of the United States, and I'm not that
patient."'

The first lady said that she enjoyed being able to hand-pick projects
she's passionate about, and would continue focusing on helping veterans
returning from war and their families in the coming years.

Find a flattering haircut that works with your face shape! Here, get advice on choosing the best hairstyle for your face.

You know how the same pair of pants can look super cute on your friend but not so flattering on your
body? That goes for hairstyles as well: A style that looks great on
someone else might not work for you. The trick to finding your own best
style is to find a cut that flatters and balances your features. I asked
my hairstylist, Danielle Lopreore, of the Fred Segal Salon in Santa
Monica, Calif., for her advice on choosing the best hairstyle for
particular face shapes:
If you have a square face and a strong jaw, like Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Demi Moore,
try to avoid severe, straight-across bangs that will make your face
look even boxier. Short pixie cuts and chin-length bobs will also
accentuate a square face. Instead, try wearing your hair shoulder length
or longer (notice how these ladies all have long hair). Also, if you
part it on the side, or wear an asymmetric, side-swept fringe, you'll
soften the angles of your face.
If your face is round, like Jennifer Hudson’s and Drew Barrymore’s,
wear your hair in layers around your face to create angles. Ask your
stylist to cut the layers to accentuate your cheekbones. If you already
have layers, try using a curling iron or blow-dryer to sweep the layers
away from your face just above your cheekbones to make the cheekbones
look sharper. Avoid a hair length above your shoulders, which will make
your face look rounder. If you have bangs, wear them longer and wispier
at the sides of your forehead to give the illusion of a narrower face.
If you have a heart-shaped face, like Reese Witherspoon, Naomi Campbell, and Eva Longoria,
create volume around your chin by using a blow dryer to make layers
fuller or to add waves in the lower half of your hair. Avoid having too
many curls or too much volume in the upper part of your hair. If your
face is long, like Sarah Jessica Parker’s and Ashlee Simpson’s,
avoid wearing your hair straight and past your shoulders, which can
make your face look even longer. Keep your hair near or above your
shoulders, and, to balance the length of your face, add soft waves for
some body.

          Jessica's Tips & Tricks

Don't throw out your bronzer! The other day I tried a new blush
and realized that it was much too pink — I looked like I had a fever.
Unfortunately, I was running late and didn't have enough time to wash my
face and start over. The solution: I toned down the pink with some
earth-toned bronzer that was left over from the summer.
Back to school checklist: note
books? Check. Class assignments? Check. Plan B morning-after pills?
Check. Wait, what? It's true: Students as young as 14 can get birth
control at 13 New York City high schools without parental consent.

Although condoms have been provided free for years, this pilot
program, unpublicized for the last year, gives students access to oral
contraceptives, along with the morning-after pill, which can prevent an
unintended pregnancy up to 72 hours after unprotected sex.
Parents can choose to fill out an opt-out form that will exclude
their children from the program. Otherwise, students can get birth
control from the school nurse confidentially. Prescriptions to oral and
injectable birth control are written by city health department doctors.
So far, only one to two percent of parents have chosen to opt their kids
out of the program.
The New York Post
notes that the program, called CATCH—Connecting Adolescents To
Comprehensive Health—is part of a citywide attempt to stem the tide of
teen pregnancy, which leads girls—mostly poor—to drop out of school.
According to the Associated Press, about 7,000 girls get pregnant by the time they reach the age of 17. It says more than half choose to get an abortion.

Beth Feeback Finds Famous Abstract Painting By Ilya Bolotowsky At Goodwill And Sells It For $27,000 (PHOTO)

Earlier this summer, North Carolina artist Beth Feeback discovered the Goodwill find of a lifetime, nabbing an authentic abstract painting by Ilya Bolotowsky for only $9.99 at her local thrift shop stop. A few months and a Sotheby's consultation later, ABC News reports that Feeback has sold her find for an impressive $27,000 at auction.

The bidding began at Sotheby's New York
on September 21st, with the painting earning a hammer price of $34,375
(including the unidentified buyer's premium). It far exceeded its
estimated auction block price, which was set at $15,000-20,000.

Like most unsuspecting thrifters, Feeback wasn't aware of her painting's famous origins when she bought it. In fact the artist, who specializes in portraits of cats,
was just looking to upcycl

e an unwanted canvas for her own work. But a
quick Google search of a name printed on the back of the canvas
prevented her from turning Bolotowsky's abstractions into furry calico
creatures.
Feeback watched the auction action from her home, stating to ABC News
she was nervous that the painting wouldn't sell. "We could see that
some of the paintings sold for much more [than] the value that the
auction house had put on them and some sold for much less and an
uncomfortable number of them did not sell at all."
What will she do now that her prized possession has been sold? She
has plans to produce a series of knockoff "Vertical Diamond" paintings
with her own special addition -- funky acrylic images of cats, ABC news reports. (We can't wait to see how much Sotheby's offers her for those.)

Your skin, as you probably know, can be your best
friend or your worst enemy. But your relationship with your complexion should
be kept simple. “Skin care doesn’t have to be complicated — in fact,
the simpler, the better,” says Emmy Graber, M.D., assistant professor of
dermatology at Boston University School of Medicine. Here are the skin-care
basics that will help you make peace with your skin.

    Cleanse
With the Right Ingredients
“One of the big challenges is that many people don’t wash
their face, especially at night — they are just too tired,” says
Patricia Farris, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology at Tulane University
and a dermatologist in Metairie, Louisiana. But no matter how exhausted you
are, it’s imperative that you wash the debris that can lead to clogged pores
and dead-skin buildup. “You simply have to remove the makeup, dirt, and
pollution from the day,” Dr. Farris says.
When it comes to choosing a face wash, remember:
The milder, the better. “My motto is ‘Do no harm,’ because it’s easy to
irritate the skin and go overboard,” Farris adds. For most skin types, a gentle
cleanser or even a mild soap will do the job. If you have oily, acne-prone skin or dry or mature skin, try a
cleanser that has an alpha hydroxy acid, such as lactic acid or buffered
glycolic acid, that will chemically exfoliate the skin without irritation.
Protect
Every Day
No matter your age or skin color, wearing daily sun protection
isn’t negotiable. Choose a sunscreen or a moisturizer with a consistency that
you like with at least SPF 30 that offers broad-spectrum UVA orUVB protection.
Apply 15 minutes before going outside, whether it’s sunny or cloudy, says
Farris.
For oily or acne-prone
skin, opt for an oil-free sunblock or light gel-based lotions. If
you have combination skin,
use a light fluid-formula sunscreen during the daytime, and focus on treating
the dry areas at night, Graber recommends.
For sensitive
skin with rosacea, melasma, or other pigmentation issues, look
for sunscreens with micronized titanium oxide or zinc oxide, which are physical
UV blockers that won’t aggravate the skin. “The important thing is that these
sunblocks do not let the sun enter the skin, so they prevent heat from being
generated, which can worsen facial redness and inflammation,” Farris
explains.
For dry
or mature skin, look for sunscreens or creams with proven
hydrators such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin E.
Do
Damage Control at Night
It’s a no-brainer: You can maximize the time you spend
sleeping to deliver moisture, correct existing problems, and help prevent
future damage to your skin. You can select any number of options, but
antioxidants are the most powerful tool in helping to restore your skin.
To prevent
and treat fine lines and wrinkles, use products that have
tried-and-true antioxidants such as retinol, a potent source of vitamin A,
which helps promote collagen and prevent free-radical damage. Effective
prescription products are available through your dermatologist.
If your skin is sensitive and can’t tolerate retinol, try products with
antioxidants such as vitamin C, coffeeberry, or extracts of green or white tea.
These antioxidants can help fend off the free radicals that attack collagen,
thereby slowing down the aging process.
Treat
Problems
For blemishes,
you will benefit from treatments containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid,
and glycolic acid. “Look for products that multitask, such as acne creams
blended with calming ingredients so that they work synergistically and not dry
you out,” says Audrey Kunin, M.D., assistant clinical instructor of dermatology
at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.
For sensitive
skin with rosacea, melasma, or other pigmentation issues, opt for
calming lotions with antioxidants, such as green tea and vitamins C and E, and
anti-inflammatory ingredients such as licorice extract and feverfew. “Products
with these ingredients can be used to regulate inflammation,”
