MBI's Brandon Culbreth Selected By Houston Astros

MBI Sports Management Client and Forsyth Country Day School alumnus Brandon Culbreth (Class of 2011) has been drafted in the 8th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft, by the Houston Astros.

Culbreth, who helped lead the Furies to their first ever NCISAA state championship this spring, was the 250th overall pick in the draft. Culbreth was drafted by the Astros as a right handed pitcher.

The 6'4" Culbreth played third base and outfield for FCDS. He is the first FCDS alumnus ever drafted by a Major League team. Mike Baker and Mike Mertz of MBI Sports Management had this to say about Culbreth; "We are "extremely excited and proud of Brandon and his accomplishments. He is a player who will definitely not rest on his laurels and we expect "B" to just get continually better."

Orioles Minor Leaguer Signs with MBI

Greensboro, NC - Baltimore Orioles minor league pitcher Kenny Moreland has signed with MBI Sports Management. The 2008 Division III Pitcher of Year out of Christopher Newport University signed as a free agent with the Orioles in June of the same year. In three seasons with the Orioles, Moreland has played for four of the team’s affiliates, including the Bluefield Orioles, Aberdeen Ironbirds, Delmarva Shorebirds, and Fredrick Keys.

Greensboro sports agent continues discussion on NCAA and Secretary of State investigations

The business of athlete representation is widely regarded as an extremely competitive environment that can lead to rather unethical behavior as agencies try to sign "the next big thing". Couple that with pages of rules and regulations from both the NCAA as well as state laws that are about as clear as peanut butter, and it's no wonder that rules get broken either intentionally or unintentionally.

"Sure, it's challenging, but it's no more challenging than say, being a realtor," Mike Baker, Owner/Agent of MBi Sports Management said in a recent interview. "Tough times tend to weed out those that aren't qualified or aren't in it for the long run."

MBi Sports Management, located in Greensboro, was founded by Mike Baker and focuses on baseball. Having played baseball professionally, Baker knows the ins and outs of athlete representation from both sides of the equation and the company "was founded under the premise that every athlete's career is unique and deserving of quality, professional and personalized representation," according to the organization's website.

"The most challenging aspect is trying to advise parents at the most pivotal point in their child's life, when we're all unsure about how that is viewed by the NCAA," Baker said. "Do they have a right to counsel? If so, who says when and where this is appropriate?"

In North Carolina, athlete agents must adhere to the North Carolina Uniform Athlete Agents Act set forth by the NC Secretary of State. The Act goes into a litany of black, white and gray about what an athlete agent can and cannot do.

"The Act is not very clear to the parents when they read the document, if they take time to read it at all and the players don't read it," Baker said when asked about the Act. "There needs to be very clear cut timing and actions for all to understand."

In addition to the Uniform Athlete Agents Act, Baker was also asked if he felt there was a better way where all parties involved can work more closely to prevent harmful situations to all.

"The NCAA should designate a time to choose agents," Baker said. "Agents should then be allowed to visit during certain dates and be allowed to leave the family or player their information. Let the player decide. Anything else is a clear violation and with accountability because the accountability lies with the NCAA and the agents."

The responsibility does lie with the NCAA and sports agents. However the current system is so unclear that it makes it difficult for agencies that do follow the rules (like MBi Sports Management) to understand what can and cannot be done. And for those entities that do not follow the NCAA's current murky regulations, it gives an easy out to pass the blame on to someone else.

GREENSBORO, NC – MBi Sports Management is proud to introduce their summer interns: Bongsoo Kang and Landry Moore. Both Bongsoo and Landry are making MBi their home for the summer as they gain experience in the sports management field.

Bongsoo Kang is originally from South Korea; he comes to MBi from The University of Tennessee where he is currently studying Sport Management with a concentration in Business Administration. Bongsoo brings experience in both the marketing and sales aspects of sporting games and events. He says of his summer internship, “I am looking forward to working with MBi and building on professional skills such as communication, organization, and implementation. In the future, I hope to become a sport agent, so I am excited for this opportunity.”

Landry Moore is a native of Houston, Texas and is a senior at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. With a background as a competitive softball player, Landry is familiar with the ends of outs of being an athlete. She will be assisting in scouting players, as well as the marketing and management aspect of the field. GREENSBORO, NC – MBi Sports Management is excited to announce their representation of Nick Rogers; a pitcher from Greensboro, NC who signed with the Kansas City Royals as a non drafted free agent at the start of this month.

Rogers attended Northwest Guilford High School. He went on to attend North Carolina A&T. In his senior season at A&T, Rogers ended his collegiate career by starting in 51 games for the Aggies where he accumulated a stellar .364 batting average; with 72 hits, 10 doubles, and 15 home runs, Rogers batted in a total of 54 runs. He also stole 11 bases during the season. He was a vital part of the Aggies baseball team.

C.J. Beatty, an outfielder drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals last year (26th round; 789th overall), has been playing well with the Quad Cities team and was recently promoted to the club's full-season roster, AND HE'LL TELL YOU ALL ABOUT IT ON TWITTER.

Kidding aside, this minor-league prospect is all over the web in a major way.

Let's take stock of his social-media presence, shall we?

Twitter? Check.

Facebook? Check.

Myspace? Check.

Eponymous website? Check.

Handlers of athletic prospects hyping their players is nothing new, but in recent years agents, fathers, fans and obsessive stalkers have increasingly taken their efforts online.

With all this hype around a player who's so new to the organization, the question just hangs: Is Beatty's promotional push putting the cart before the horse? Shouldn't his numbers speak for themselves? Some say yes, others retort: hellfuckingno. It's the job of sports agents to endear their players to the public and promote them.

A number of his social networks plainly state he's an "outfielder for the St. Louis Cardinals"when clearly he's not. He's playing low-A ball. Big difference.

That said, the interviews with Beatty, the ALL CAPS UPDATES to this Twitter feed, even the local-news segments about the player indicate that he's an incredibly positive person who absolutely loves baseball.

C.J. Beatty: What's not to love?

Judging from how past Cardinals players -- regardless of their ability to consistently deliver on the field -- have endeared themselves to fans, if Beatty does get up here for a cup of coffee or more, he's likely to receive a heaping helping of worship (cf. Bo Hart, John Rodriguez, Rex Hudler, Felix José, Milt Thompson....)

But heck, according to folks in Beatty's hometown, he's a gosh-darned good person:

On a related note, colbyrasmus.com has apparently been taken down, perhaps after its namesake, Cards center fielder Colby Rasmus, made the jump the big leagues. That site proclaimed Rasmus as the "future of the St. Louis Cardinals" or the "Cardinals Top Prospect," if memory serves. (Anyone have a screen cap?)

From what we can tell online, since September Beatty has been represented by Greensboro, North Carolina-based MBI Sports Management (he's a former player for North Carolina A&T State University), a fact that may be related to his social-media consciousness -- MBI news is easier to find on his Facebook, Myspace and website pages than are his actual statistics.

GREENSBORO, NC— Tyler Sexton is a 24 year old, left-handed pitcher from the Triad. In June 2008 he was selected in the 31^st round of the Major league Draft by the Baltimore Orioles organization. Sexton attended T. Wingate Andrews High School in High Point where he was a three year letterman. After graduating in 2003, he went on to attend Campbell University where he played for one season until transferring to Western Carolina University. At WCU, Sexton was a three year starter. In 2007 and 2008 he was named ESPN The Magazine District III Third Team Academic All-American; in 2008 he was a Lowes Senior Class Award Nominee and was named Western Carolina’s Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.

On Thursday, October 29th, CJ Beatty took time out to visit and speak with over 200 Hasty elementary Students. Needless to say the kids were all very excited, but they all listened intently. CJ spoke about the benefits of listening to teachers that want to help make them successful. He talked about the importance of education and practice, both in school and on the sports field. Afterward, CJ stayed for autographs and took time to answer questions.

Royals name Minor League pitchers and players of the year

All will take part in futures night on September 25

KANSAS CITY, MO (September 10, 2009) - The Kansas City Royals have named their Minor League Pitchers and Players of the Year for their respective affiliates. The 16 players are expected to be at Kauffman Stadium for Futures Night on Friday, September 25, where they will take part in a Q&A and autograph session at Gate A from 5:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. as well as be honored in an on-field presentation prior to the Royals game against the Twins.

Outfielder Luis Del Rosario is the Burlington Player of the Year. The 22-year old from San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic batted .268 with three home runs, 17 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 57 games with Burlington. Del Rosario finished the year with the Wilmington Blue Rocks.
