If you have kids, you already know the truth:
You can clean the house… and five minutes later it looks like you didn’t.

There are crumbs where crumbs should not exist.
Toys magically multiply overnight.
Laundry appears out of thin air.
And somehow the floor is sticky again.

If you live in a busy suburban home (especially around the North Chicago area where families are always on the go), keeping things clean can feel like a full-time job on top of your actual full-time job.

The good news?
You don’t need a perfect house.
You just need smart routines, realistic expectations, and a few quick wins that make a huge difference.

Let’s break it down in a way that actually works for real families.

First, Let’s Reset the Goal (Because Perfect Is a Trap)

Before we jump into routines, here’s the mindset shift that saves your sanity:

Your house doesn’t need to look spotless. It needs to be functional and comfortable.

With kids:

Clean enough is the win

Safe and sanitary beats magazine-perfect

Progress beats perfection every time

Once you stop chasing “always spotless,” everything gets easier.

The Secret to a Clean House With Kids: Small Daily Resets

Big weekend cleaning marathons are exhausting and rarely last.

What works better is tiny resets throughout the day.

Think:

5 minutes here

10 minutes there

one quick sweep before bed

These add up fast.

The 10-Minute Morning Reset (Life-Changing)

Every morning, do a fast sweep of the main living areas.

Takes about 10 minutes total:

Make beds (even messy is better than undone)

Put toys back in bins

Wipe kitchen counters quickly

Toss trash

Straighten couch pillows

Your house instantly feels calmer before the day even starts.

The After-School Power Reset

This one prevents chaos from snowballing.

Right when kids get home:

Shoes in designated spot

Backpacks hung up

Lunchboxes emptied

Papers in a folder or basket

Quick snack cleanup

It takes 5 minutes.
It saves hours later.

The Nighttime “Save Tomorrow You” Routine

This is the golden habit.

Before bed:

15-minute family cleanup:

Toys back to bins

Dishes into dishwasher

Wipe counters

Quick floor sweep in kitchen

Start dishwasher

Waking up to a cleaner house feels like a gift to yourself.

Realistic Weekly Cleaning Routine (Kid-Friendly Version)

You don’t need to clean everything every day.

Here’s a simple rotation that works for busy families.

Monday: Bathrooms

Tuesday: Floors

Weekends stay lighter and less stressful.

The Best Quick Wins (Maximum Impact, Minimum Effort)

These are the moves that make your house look cleaner fast.

1. Clear surfaces first

Messy counters make everything look dirty.

Even if floors aren’t perfect, clear counters = cleaner house vibe.

2. Laundry baskets in every main area

Have one in:

bedrooms

hallway

Instant clutter control.

3. Toy bins instead of toy shelves

Open bins are faster for kids and you.

Toss, don’t organize.

4. Wipes everywhere

Keep cleaning wipes in:

kitchen

Fast wipe = fast win.

5. One load of laundry a day

Instead of Mount Laundry on weekends.

Small loads stay manageable.

Teaching Kids to Help (Without the Fight)

Kids can absolutely help, even little ones.

Ages 2 to 4:

help load dishwasher

Ages 9+:

Make it quick, not perfect.

Done is better than perfect.

The “15-Minute Emergency Clean” (Guests Coming Fast)

We’ve all been there.

Here’s your fast rescue plan:

Set timer for 15 minutes and do only:

Clear counters

Toss clutter into baskets

Wipe bathroom sink + toilet

Quick vacuum main area

Your house will look 70% cleaner instantly.

Let’s Talk About Deep Cleaning (Because Kids = Buildup Fast)

Daily tidying keeps things livable.
But with kids, grime builds up faster.

Think:

sticky fingerprints on walls

bathroom buildup

crumbs in corners

baseboards that turn gray

kitchen grease near handles

That’s where occasional deep cleaning matters.

Best schedule for families:

Regular light cleaning weekly or biweekly

Deep cleaning every 3 to 4 months

This keeps mess from becoming overwhelming.

When It’s Worth Hiring Professional Help (Seriously)

There is no prize for doing it all yourself.

If you:

feel constantly behind

never catch up

spend every weekend cleaning

feel stressed by mess

Hiring a professional service like McMaid Home Service can be a sanity-saver.

They handle:

So your daily routines are easier to maintain.

A Realistic Cleaning Mindset for Parents

Here’s the truth most parents need to hear:

A clean house with kids is not about constant cleaning.
It’s about simple systems.

Small routines
Quick resets
Lower pressure
Consistency over perfection

Some days will still be messy.
That’s okay.

You’re raising humans, not running a showroom.

Final Thoughts: Clean Enough Is the Win

Keeping a clean house with kids doesn’t mean spotless floors and zero toys in sight.

It means:

sanitary

comfortable

manageable

calm enough to breathe

With a few smart routines and quick wins, your home can feel cleaner without stealing all your time or your sanity.

And when life gets busy (because it always does), having backup help from professionals like McMaid Home Service can make all the difference.

If you live in the North Chicago suburbs, you already know your home goes through a lot year-round. Long winters bring salt and slush, spring brings pollen, summer brings dust and open windows, and fall brings leaves, muddy shoes, and nonstop schedules. Even if you’re great at keeping up with regular house cleaning, grime has a way of hiding in the places we don’t notice until it’s really noticeable.

That’s where a deep cleaning checklist comes in.

This guide was built specifically for North Chicago suburban homes, from cozy condos and townhomes to larger single-family homes with basements, mudrooms, and busy kitchens. You’ll find a practical, room-by-room deep cleaning checklist with clear steps, plenty of bullet lists, seasonal notes, and a quick section on when it’s best to hire McMaid Home Service for a truly professional deep clean.

Let’s get your home feeling fresh, healthy, and reset.

Why Deep Cleaning Matters in the North Chicago Suburbs

A deep cleaning does more than make your home look good. It helps your home function better.

Here in the North Chicago suburbs, deep cleaning is especially important because of:

Winter salt and road grime tracked indoors

Pollen and allergens in spring and summer

Humidity swings that can encourage musty odors in basements

Busy family life that makes “hidden dirt” pile up quickly

Indoor heating all winter which circulates dust

Deep cleaning is also the best way to protect your finishes, floors, and appliances. Over time, grease, dust, and buildup can shorten the lifespan of the things you’ve paid good money for.

Deep Cleaning vs Regular Cleaning (What’s the Difference?)

If you’ve ever booked a cleaning and wondered why your baseboards still looked dusty afterward, the answer is usually this: deep cleaning is not the same as maintenance cleaning.

Regular cleaning typically includes:

Surface wipe-downs

Toilet, sink, and shower cleanup

Kitchen counters, stovetop, outside of appliances

Quick vacuuming and mopping

Basic tidying

Deep cleaning typically includes:

Detail cleaning edges, corners, vents, trim

Hand-wiping doors, handles, light switches

Scrubbing buildup, soap scum, mineral deposits

Moving small furniture to clean underneath

Cleaning inside areas like microwaves and sometimes ovens

Dusting blinds, ceiling fans, wall corners

Cleaning baseboards, window sills, and high-touch zones

If you want that “new house” feeling without renovating, a deep clean is the shortcut.

Before You Start: Gather Supplies (So You Don’t Stop Mid-Clean)

Deep cleaning goes smoother when your tools are ready. Here’s a simple supply list that works for most homes.

Essential deep cleaning supplies:

Rubber gloves

Trash bags

Step stool or small ladder

Optional but incredibly helpful:

Steam cleaner for grout and tile

How to Deep Clean Like a Pro (Order Matters)

If you clean in the right order, you’ll avoid redoing work.

The deep cleaning flow:

A great deep clean is less about working harder, and more about working smart.

Whole-Home Deep Cleaning Checklist (Start Here)

Before the room-by-room list, tackle a few house-wide zones that often get missed.

If you live in the North Chicago suburbs, you already know how fast a home can go from “pretty clean” to “how did this happen?” Between winter salt, spring pollen, summer dust, and fall leaf-tracking chaos, suburban homes in this area get hit with a unique kind of mess year-round.

And that’s exactly why so many homeowners ask the same question:

Do I need a deep cleaning, or will regular cleaning be enough?

In this guide, we’ll break down deep cleaning vs. regular cleaning in simple terms, including what each one covers, what schedule makes sense for North Chicago suburban homes, and what costs typically look like. By the end, you’ll know exactly what your home actually needs (and when).

Why North Chicago Suburban Homes Get Dirty Faster Than You Think

The North Chicago suburbs are beautiful, but they come with a real-world cleaning challenge: four intense seasons and lots of daily life.

Here’s what makes cleaning harder in this region:

Winter salt and slush get tracked into entryways, kitchens, and hallways

Dry heat in winter kicks up dust and makes it settle everywhere

Spring pollen sneaks in through windows, shoes, pets, and clothing

Summer humidity can create musty smells in basements and laundry rooms

Fall leaf debris and mud end up all over entry rugs and floors

Bigger homes often mean:

more bathrooms

more floor space

more baseboards, stairs, and surfaces

So even if you clean often, the “hidden dirt” builds up quickly. That’s the real difference-maker between regular cleaning and deep cleaning.

What Is Regular Cleaning?

Regular cleaning is your maintenance clean. It’s what keeps the home consistently tidy, sanitary, and under control.

Think of it like brushing your teeth. You do it regularly to prevent problems.

Regular cleaning usually includes:

Wiping kitchen counters and surfaces

Cleaning sinks and faucets

Cleaning bathrooms (toilets, tubs/showers, mirrors)

Sweeping and vacuuming floors

Mopping hard floors

Basic dusting of reachable surfaces

Emptying trash

Regular cleaning is best for:

The Best Cleaning Schedule for North Chicago Suburban Homes

A good schedule depends on lifestyle, but here are reliable, realistic recommendations that work for most homes in the North Chicago suburbs.

Option 1: Busy families (kids, pets, hosting often)

Best for high-traffic homes that get messy quickly.

Option 2: Average suburban household

Biweekly regular cleaning

This is the most common “sweet spot” schedule.

Option 3: Low traffic household (no pets, fewer people at home)

Monthly regular cleaning

Recommended Combo Plan for North Chicago Suburban Homes

If you want the simplest plan that works for most households:

The ideal “suburban clean home” schedule:

Deep cleaning every 4 months

Regular cleaning every 2 weeks

This gives you:

a truly fresh home year-round

minimal buildup

less time cleaning on weekends

FAQ: Deep Cleaning vs Regular Cleaning

Does deep cleaning include inside the oven or fridge?

Sometimes yes, sometimes it’s an add-on. Many cleaning companies treat oven cleaning and inside-fridge cleaning as optional upgrades because they require extra time.

Will deep cleaning make my home stay clean longer?

Yes, especially when followed by regular cleaning. Deep cleaning removes buildup that causes your home to look dirty faster.

Is deep cleaning only for spring?

Not at all. Spring and fall are popular, but deep cleaning is also great before holidays, after winter, and anytime the home feels “stale.”

Final Thoughts: What North Chicago Suburban Homes Really Need

So, what does your home really need?

Most North Chicago suburban homes need both:

Regular cleaning to keep life manageable

Deep cleaning to eliminate buildup from seasons, salt, pollen, and daily living

If you only do regular cleaning, you’ll eventually notice dullness and grime creeping in.
If you only deep clean once in a while, you’ll spend more time playing catch-up.

The best approach is a smart schedule that matches your lifestyle, home size, and how you use your space.

There’s nothing quite like shiny stainless steel. When it’s clean, your kitchen looks brighter, newer, and instantly more put together.

But when it’s streaky? Smudged? Covered in fingerprints?
Suddenly your “modern kitchen” looks like a crime scene of greasy hands and water marks.

If you live in a busy North Chicago suburban home, stainless steel appliances work hard every single day. Fridges get touched constantly, dishwashers catch splashes, and ovens collect grease faster than you expect.

The good news?
You don’t need fancy products or endless scrubbing to make stainless steel shine.

Let’s walk through how to clean stainless steel appliances without streaks, the most common mistakes people make, and quick fixes that actually work.

Why Stainless Steel Gets Streaky So Easily

Stainless steel isn’t flat like glass. It has a fine grain texture that runs in one direction. When you clean against that grain or leave residue behind, streaks appear.

Add in:

Hard water minerals

Soap buildup

Greasy fingerprints

Paper towel lint

And you’ve got a streaky mess.

The secret to spotless stainless steel is:
cleaning with the grain
using the right moisture level
finishing with a dry polish

Before You Start: What You’ll Need

You probably already have everything at home.

Best tools for streak-free stainless steel:

Microfiber cloths (2 to 3 works best)

Warm water

Mild dish soap (just a drop)

White vinegar (optional but powerful)

Olive oil or a drop of mineral oil (optional shine booster)

What to avoid:

Paper towels (they leave lint)

Abrasive sponges

Harsh scrubbing powders

Bleach-based cleaners

The Foolproof Streak-Free Stainless Steel Method

This works on refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, microwaves, and range hoods.

Step 1: Wipe with warm water

Lightly dampen a microfiber cloth with warm water.

Wipe the appliance in the direction of the grain.
You’ll see faint lines in the steel, follow those.

This removes dust and loose grime.

Step 2: Add gentle soap if greasy

If there are fingerprints or splatters:

Add one tiny drop of dish soap to the cloth

Wipe again with the grain

Focus on handle areas

Less soap is better.

Step 3: Rinse wipe

Use a clean damp cloth with plain water to remove soap residue.

This step is crucial. Leftover soap causes streaks.

Step 4: Dry and polish

Immediately dry with a dry microfiber cloth.

Buff lightly with the grain until shiny.

This is where the streak-free magic happens.

Optional shine boost:

Add one drop of olive oil or mineral oil to a cloth and buff lightly.

Your appliances will glow.

Quick Natural Spray (Great for Busy Homes)

Mix in a spray bottle:

1 cup warm water

1/2 cup white vinegar

1 drop dish soap

Spray lightly, wipe with the grain, then dry.

Perfect for daily touch-ups.

Common Stainless Steel Cleaning Mistakes (And Easy Fixes)

Let’s save you some frustration.

Mistake #1: Cleaning against the grain

Why it causes streaks:
Dirt gets pushed into tiny grooves instead of lifted out.

Mistake #2: Using too much cleaner

Why it causes streaks:
Excess product leaves residue behind.

Mistake #3: Skipping the dry step

Why it causes streaks:
Water dries into mineral spots.

Mistake #5: Spraying cleaner directly on the appliance

Why it causes streaks:
Liquid runs into seams and dries unevenly.

Why it causes damage:
They scratch the surface permanently.

How to Remove Tough Grease on Stainless Steel

For stubborn buildup around ovens or range hoods:

Remember Danny Tanner on the sitcom “Full House”? He always had a sponge and a bottle of cleaning solution handy, and he seemed almost giddy whenever he spotted a mess that required his expert cleaning skills. The show’s writers and actors got many laughs of out Danny’s excessive cleanliness over the years-because they understood that most people just don’t love cleaning.

Are you in the category of people who consider house chores a bore? Even if you try to keep a tidy home, you probably don’t jump for joy when you spot a sink overflowing with dishes or a heaping pile of laundry.

If you’re looking for a little motivation to clean your house (or to call in some professional maids), you should know that a clean house has numerous mental and physical health benefits. Read below to discover what they are.

1. People With Cleaner Houses Exercise More

Whatever your feelings about clean and messy houses, you can’t argue with the health benefits of exercise. Physical activity helps you feel happier, gives you more energy, and keeps weight and health conditions more manageable.

You may not realize that a clean house actually subconsciously encourages you to exercise. A study published in Time magazine showed that people with cleaner homes exercise more and have better health. So if you have weight loss or exercise goals, consider cleaning your house an important step towards achieving them.

2. Cleaning Your House Counts as Exercise

Perhaps you have too many tasks on your daily schedule to both clean your house and exercise. Not a problem. You can always count vacuuming, dusting, mopping, and making the bed as your workout instead.

You can burn about 200 calories an hour doing common household chores. And some chores burn calories even faster. For example, scrubbing your bathtub burns 200 calories in 30 minutes, and raking leaves burns 225 calories in 30 minutes.

3. Making Your Bed Leads to Better Sleep

You’re not alone if your mornings are so rushed that you don’t find time to make the bed. One survey found that about 59% of people don’t make their beds every morning and only 27% do.

But that small chore yields big health benefits-if you take time for it. A survey by the National Sleep Foundation reveals two key reasons you should pay attention to your bed’s state of cleanliness:

75% of people report sleeping better on clean sheets.

Daily bed-makers are 19% more likely to experience a restful night’s sleep.

Make this small chore a priority from here on out-or hire McMaid Home Services who can take care of the job for you.

4. Washing the Dishes Clears Your Mind

Even if you have a dishwasher, you likely have to do some type of dishwashing every day. And if you don’t, you pay for it later with a sink full of dirty, smelly pots, pans, and plates.

Maybe you avoid washing your dishes because you need a rest. Well, it turns out the chore you’re skipping could give you the mental break you’re craving. A study from Florida State University researchers found that people can use dishwashing time for mindful meditation. Participants who meditated while scrubbing dishes experienced reduced stress and boosted immune systems.

To take advantage of those benefits, focus on the experience next time you do your dishes. Take time to appreciate the scent of the soap, the soft feel of the bubbles, and other sensory elements of the chore. Your brain will thank you.

5. Uncluttered Space Leads You to Eat Healthier

Can your messy room really be affecting your waistline? Indirectly, yes. A cluttered living room or bedroom won’t make you gain weight, but it might lead you to eat unhealthy foods that contribute to extra pounds on your frame.

This correlation comes from a study published in the journal Psychological Science. Researchers compared two groups of people: those who worked in a messy space and those who worked in a neat space. After just 10 minutes in the workroom, the people in the neat space were twice as likely to eat an apple than a candy bar as a snack.

Put this trick to work for you. Tidy up every room in your house. Your brain will feel less cluttered, and your hands will reach for more nutritious foods.

6. Cleaning Creates a Healthy Relief Valve for Frustrations

Next time you feel frustrated, do more than leave the room and count to 100. Pick up a rag and start dusting. Or flip on the vacuum and eliminate the grime around your baseboards. In short, channel that negative energy into a positive task.

When you get angry, your heart beats faster, and your body’s hormone balance changes. Your brain also becomes more active. Essentially, your body wants to do something when you feel anger-so let that “something” be cleaning. Your anger could subside after 10 minutes of folding laundry, and then you’ll feel more rational and ready to solve the issue that caused your anger in the first place.

Are you ready to reap these health benefits of a clean house? Then pick up your mop and get cleaning, or dial trusted McMaid Home Services to tackle the dirty job for you.

There are a lot of pluses to renting an apartment, condo, or home. If the pipes burst or the furnace breaks down, your property owner usually pays for the expense. If you need a change of scenery, you don’t have to go through the hassle of putting a house on the market-you can simply decide not to sign next year’s lease. Best of all, renting is often cheaper than owning.

When it comes to deposits, though, renters often feel frustrated. Even if you scrub your apartment from top to bottom, you might still lose most of your deposit to cleaning fees. Since moving involves its own expenses, from renting the moving van to putting down a deposit on your new apartment, this financial hit couldn’t come at a worse time.

If you’re tired of this trend, read our blog below. While we can’t account for all of your property manager’s concerns, we can point you towards some of the areas renters frequently forget to clean, which can win you back some much-needed cash.

1. Refrigerator

Since your fridge never stops running, it attracts a lot of grease, dirt, and stains. To get your fridge up to par, you’ll need to unplug it, then scoot it away from the wall. Grease, dirt, and mold can build up behind the fridge, so you’ll want to scour the wall clean to avoid any future structural damage.

Next, scrub the patch of floor that the fridge usually rests on-food that gets swept beneath the fridge can rot and create pest problems for the apartment’s future renters.

While you have the fridge pulled out from the wall, clean the sides. Don’t forget to scrub the fridge’s top, since dust accumulates there and forms a thick, sticky matte. Then, once you scoot your fridge back into the wall and plug it in, you can focus on the interior. Use a warm solution of ¼ c baking soda to a gallon of water to clean the shelves, walls, and crispers. Be sure to rinse thoroughly and dry the interior so as not to leave any streaks.

2.Oven

If you have a self-cleaning oven, the cleaning process is simple-just run the self-cleaning cycle. If your oven doesn’t have this cycle, cleaning it will take a bit more time and a lot more elbow grease.

After months or years of use, your oven has probably accumulated more than a few grease stains. You can purchase oven cleaner to apply to these stains, but since oven cleaner is very abrasive, you’ll want to wear a face covering and thick rubber gloves while you use the spray. Make sure you allow air to circulate in your kitchen while you clean.

If you’d rather not use harsh oven-cleaning chemicals, use baking soda instead. Add just enough water to the soda to make a thick paste.

Remove your oven’s racks, then spread this paste on any grease buildups. Try not to drip any on the heating coil. For best results, leave your baking soda solution alone for 12 to 24 hours, then rinse it off with warm, soapy water.

While you wait for the baking soda to work, fill your tub with hot water. Place old towels at the bottom of the tub so you don’t scratch it, then set your oven’s racks on top. Add half a cup of dishwashing soap, then let the oven racks soak for at least four hours.

3.Shower/Tub

If your apartment or rental home doesn’t have a water softener, calcium deposits have probably accumulated on the tub or shower’s sides. These hard-water deposits are notoriously hard to remove. Try the following methods to get rid of yours:

Start by filling a spray bottle with one part warm water to one part vinegar. Spray this on your tub’s hard-water deposits, let the mixture sit for a few minutes, then scrub.

If this process doesn’t make a dent on the stains, move on to baking soda. Mix enough water with baking soda to make a thick paste, then spread it over your calcium deposits. Let this paste sit for at least 15 minutes, then scrub the stain and rinse the paste off with water.

4.Baseboards

It’s easy to overlook baseboards simply because they’re so close to the floor. Even if you vacuum, sweep, and mop, you might neglect these dusty fixtures. For a thorough clean, follow these steps:

Use your vacuum’s brush attachment to remove the top coating of dust.

Use warm, soapy water or a vinegar solution and a clean, soft cloth to remove grease, grime, and other stains.

To clean hard-to-reach areas, dip a cotton ball or cotton swab in your cleaning solution, then apply it to the stain.

Go over the baseboards with warm water one more time if necessary.

Depending on your home’s size, this task can take a few hours or more, but it goes a long way towards improving an entire room’s look and cleanliness.

As you clean your house before the move, don’t forget these four often-overlooked areas. If you don’t have the time or would rather devote your time and energy to packing and moving, call McMaid Home Services at (847) Got-Dust or (630) We-Clean and let them do it for you. They’ll take care of each of these important areas so you don’t have to worry about them.

She was there when you had skinned knees, your first break-up, and teenage angst. She knew what you needed during those rough times, from a bandages to kind words or discipline. Now that you’re older, wiser, and more grateful, it’s time to give something back to Mom.

You want to give your mother a gift that she’ll love, so you may want to break away from the run-of-the-mill items. You made the macaroni necklaces, purchased flowers, and have even tried jewelry. While most moms love these gifts as long as they’re from the heart, you may want to give yours something unexpected. If so, read this blog to get inspired by unconventional gifts you can give to the woman who has given you so much.

Hire a Cleaning Service

Cleaning can be hard work! Give your mom a break and hire McMaid do that work for her. Or buy her a McMaid gift certificate to give her weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly cleanings so she can enjoy her clean home without having to lift a finger.

Give a Journal

Every person has a story to tell. While it’s fantastic to sit down and have a conversation with your mom, it’s different to see her written story. With this journal, she can discuss her past accomplishments, present concerns, and future hopes. As most people do, she may want to keep this journal private. She can enjoy journaling therapy as she puts her thoughts on paper, and that relic can serve as a family heirloom so you and her descendants can get to know her on a more personal level later.

Write Her Letters

Now that we’re on the writing topic, you should consider writing to your mom. A heart-felt card can work well to show how you feel, but letters can send a more in-depth message. Take time once a month to write your mom a letter. Then, once you’ve written 12, tie them together with twine and deliver them. You can read these messages together or have her read them on her own. Either way, she’ll love the meaning behind them.

Have a Spa Day for Two

You may have already bought your mother a spa day package. But this time, extend that generosity to yourself as well. Some people won’t want to attend the spa by themselves, so this is your chance to pamper both of you-and spend some quality time together while you’re at it.

Purchase Lessons

For the woman who has everything, teach her something new (or pay someone else to teach her). New skills like photography, painting, car mechanics, computer skills, and quilting may give your mom a new hobby and get her excited about learning. You can tailor this gift to your mother’s interests to make it just want she always wanted. Like the spa day, she may want to take this class with another person. If you can’t attend, purchase a place for her spouse or a friend for company.

Take a Vacation

If you have the funds, splurge on a vacation. However, this vacation doesn’t have to have an international destination or a 5-star hotel. She may just want a free trip to see her grandchildren or to visit her siblings. Whatever ticket she receives, she’ll know that you care.

Plant an Herb Garden

If you hear year after year that your mother wants to start an herb garden, start one for her. You can find garden-ready plants that come in pre-packaged, labeled kits. Once she receives your gift, all she has to do is open it, find a well-lit window sill, and enjoy.

Scan Her Photos

Are there piles of photographs in boxes, albums, and packets around the house? If so, give your mom a gift she-and future generations-will love: scanned photographs. Once you organize and scan her photos, you can give them to other family members and place once-forgotten memories around the house.

Get Her Adrenaline Pumping

If your mom likes to take a walk on the wild side, select a gift that will take her there. Purchase a day-pass to a racecar track where she can drive the cars or spend the day on a snowmobile. She’ll love the adventure and the time you spend together.

Tell Her All the Reasons You Care

If your mother’s birthday looms close, give her a thank-you jar. For example, if your mom is about to turn 60, write 60 reasons why you love her. Be specific. You can talk about a moment where she showed you love, a favorite story she tells, or a lesson she taught you. The more specific these reasons are, the better.
Remember that gifts mean the most when you put thought into them. Take the time to consider what your mom really wants before you purchase anything. That way, any gift you choose will be a success.

You’re a responsible homeowner. You remember to do the dishes every day and to mop and vacuum at least once a week. You remember to change the filters in your furnace, and you remember to inspect your roof before each winter. You care for your home thoroughly, and it has served you well as a result.

However, you may have unintentionally neglected one important part of your cleaning routine: your mattress. Like the rest of your furniture, it needs regular cleaning too.

Even though you protect your mattress with sheets, it still needs a little TLC. To learn more about why and how you should clean your mattress, keep reading below.

Why Does Your Mattress Need Cleaning?

Since nobody ever sees your mattress, you may ignore it when you spill something on it. However, even without spills you’ll have to clean your mattress. Here’s why:

You sleep on your mattress, and it (and your sheets) absorb about half a pint of sweat while you sleep each night.

During that time, you also shed between 240,000 and 320,000 skin cells. Your sheets will catch most of them, but think of that number building up every night. They will inevitably infiltrate your mattress as well.

Allergens from pets, perfumes, etc. will get into your mattress.

Germs and other microorganisms like to feed on sweat and dead skin cells, and the more they eat, the more they’ll spread.

Luckily, your immune system can fight off these germs most of the time. However, the more the germs build up, the more often you’ll get sick. You may even see skin reactions as well.

Never fear! Now that we’ve told you the problem, we’ll tell you how to fix it. You can do basic cleaning by yourself, but if you would like to have your mattress deep-cleaned, then don’t hesitate to call the professionals.

How Do You Clean Your Mattress?

Obviously you can’t stick your mattress in the washing machine. Nor should you take it in the backyard and hose it down. You should clean it similarly to the way you clean the rest of your upholstery. We’ve given you a few tips to get you started:

Basic/Regular Cleaning: Vacuuming and Deodorizing

When you need to do only a basic cleaning, take the following steps:

Using the host attachment (or the entire vacuum if it doesn’t have a hose), vacuum the entire mattress, making sure to vacuum the
sides as well.

(Optional) Flip the mattress and repeat the process. However, it’s only important that you clean the side you sleep on.

Sprinkle baking soda over the entire mattress and rub it in with a stiff brush. Leave it to sit for at least half an hour.

Vacuum the entire mattress again. If you want your mattress to have a particular scent, sprinkle or spray that now.

This method won’t deep clean your mattress, but it will help you maintain its cleanliness.

Stain Removal

A vacuum and baking soda won’t help you get stains out of your mattress. However, you can use these tips to get rid of any unsightly spots:

Blood stains: These will come out with hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, salt, and some vigorous rubbing. Let the mixture sit on the stain for a minute before wiping it clean.

Urine stains: Treat these stains with baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and dish soap. Dab the stain with the solution, then add laundry detergent and water together in a foam. Let the mixture sit for half an hour, then wipe the stain away.

Food stains/colored drink stains: Vinegar and rubbing alcohol should clear up these stains.

Mold: You can take care of this kind of stain with a little isopropyl alcohol and warm water. Spray the mattress with a disinfectant afterward. You can also use vinegar to kill mold, but you’ll probably have to deodorize the mattress afterward. Simply use the baking soda method we listed in the basic/regular cleaning section above.

If your efforts can’t get these stains out, don’t worry-a professional can do it for you if the stains bother you. As long as you do basic cleaning, you can leave the stains alone and cover them with a sheet.

How Often Should You Clean Your Mattress?

Make sure you inspect and clean your mattress at least once every six months. It’ll last longer if you do, and it’ll have fewer illness-causing contaminants. And, as you learned from the information above, it doesn’t take much to keep your mattress clean. Use our tips to keep this oft-forgotten piece of furniture spotless.

No doubt about it: keeping your house clean is an uphill battle.

Not long after sorting the mail, you find bills and letters piled up on the kitchen table. After washing load after load of laundry, you spot three pairs of socks stuffed under the couch. Even though you’ve canceled your subscriptions, you still haven’t read your most recent magazines, and they’ve completely covered your coffee table.

Unfortunately, when that pile of dirty dishes starts to rise, so do your stress levels. The more clutter, the more anxious and irritable you feel.

Don’t worry-you’re not alone.

Why Mess Leads to Stress

According to a recent survey conducted in behalf of Huffington Post, nearly 47 percent of adults experienced some level of stress regarding home organization. And of those adults who reported stress, 87 percent of women and 81 percent of men reported that home upkeep was enough to trigger anxiety.

Sherrie Bourg Carter, Psy.D. explains that clutter can have a large impact in how we feel about our homes and ourselves. Messes do more than look bad on the surface-they influence our thought processes and make it difficult to relax.

Mental Clutter

Messes creates visual, olfactory, and tactile stimuli. When your home fills with clutter, your brain goes into overdrive to process your surroundings, resulting in unsettled emotions and restlessness.

Distraction

Clutter is a physical reminder of unfinished projects. They constantly signal to your brain that you still haven’t replaced that missing light bulb or donated those old shirts. Instead of focusing on more important projects, you find yourself guiltily thinking about the last time you took out the trash.

Waste of Time

Overflowing piles of papers and out of place toys intrude upon the open spaces in your home. This makes it difficult for many people to think creatively and work efficiently, resulting in wasted time. Furthermore, disorganization also makes it difficult to find items you need quickly, such as important receipts lost in the paper pile or keys buried beneath your Blu-Rays.

Ways to Keep Calm While You Clean

While messes and clutter can have a negative impact on mental health, many homeowners find it equally stressing to constantly clean a dirty home. They struggle facing the enormous project before them, and they feel weighed down and embarrassed by the mess.

Fortunately, these tips can help you keep calm while you clean.

Break Larger Projects into Smaller Tasks

Whether you have a full-time desk job or you work full time watching your kids, you likely don’t have time to set aside an entire week, or even just a weekend, to clean your entire house in one go.

Rather than cleaning as much as you can for as long as you can, break up your larger cleaning projects into smaller daily tasks. For example, instead of completely emptying the fridge and wiping it from top to bottom, try wiping out the crisper drawers one day and then throwing out expired food the next.

Distract Your Mind

For many people, cleaning is a mind-numbing chore. As you start scrubbing the floors or tackling the toilet, you might start thinking about how you’d much rather watch your latest TV show or catch up on your Twitter feeds. Boredom can quickly make a 5-minute task feel like a 5-hour job, which will only add to your frustration.

Rather than letting your mind wander, make cleaning more entertaining. Turn up your stereo while you dust and jam to your favorite tunes. Pop in your headphones and listen to an audiobook while you mop the floors. Perhaps learn another language as you empty your closet of old clothes and shoes.

When In Doubt Throw It Out

The more items you have, the more items you have to clean. As you sort through the clutter, don’t scramble or waste time trying to find a space for everything. If you don’t use it, want it, or need it, then you need to get rid of it.

If your items are in fairly good repair, consider donating them to a local charity or selling them online to earn a little cash on the side. If you use something rarely, consider storing it in the garage or the back closet. Put a date on the box when you store it, and if you don’t use that item in a year, chances are likely that you don’t need it and can easily donate it.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

These tips will help you cut back on the clutter and subsequently cut back on the stress. However, some jobs are too big to handle alone. If you find yourself struggling to keep up with the chores, don’t be afraid to ask your family for help. Encourage children to pick up their own toys, and consider creating a reward system to promote clean habits.

And if you find that you’re still stressed when you clean, remember that you can always hire a professional team from McMaid to do the job for you. You’ll be amazed at how quickly McMaid’s team of highly trained maids can set your house in order once again.

Homeowners share countless tips and tricks about their homes and how to care for them. After all, people tend to trust what they know. Maybe your grandmother always had a spotless house, or maybe your dad always kept the house organized.

But whether you take advice from a DIY blog, your grandmother, or your friend from book club, your information might be outdated or incorrect. Here are 10 of the most popular cleaning myths we hear. You might be surprised which myths are based in fact and which are completely false.

1. Bleach is a universal cleaner: False

Bleach’s overpowering scent leads many homeowners to believe it is the ultimate cleaner. However, cleaning isn’t one of bleach’s strong suits. It releases fumes that cause sickness, and it also damages some surfaces.

Bleach works best as a disinfectant. Use it to remove heavy stains, but not to clean grime or dirt from surfaces.

2. Newspapers clean glass more effectively than towels: False

Newspapers are thin and don’t stand up well to wet conditions. Unless you want newspaper bits and ink stains all over, don’t use newspapers to clean your mirrors or windows. Use coffee filters to achieve clean, streak-free windows and mirrors.

3. Lemons lift hard water stains: True

Lemons safely remove water stains from glass and metal. Their acidity breaks down the stain while also releasing a fresh scent.

To remove hard water stains, rub a lemon on the stain and then rinse.

4. Citrus peels safely deodorize the garbage disposal: False

Citrus peels effectively eliminate nasty scents from the garbage disposal. However, if they aren’t ground up completely, they eventually contribute to the bad smells wafting from your sink. Citrus peels can clog your drain and corrode the metal in your disposal.

It’s safer to pour a few teaspoons of white vinegar down your disposal instead.

5. Toothpaste removes tarnish from silverware: True

Some silver polishes contain chemicals that harm your skin and the environment. Toothpaste is a great alternative because it contains gentle, yet effective, abrasives.

Buy a toothpaste with extra tartar control. Then, dab a small amount of toothpaste on your silverware. Spread the toothpaste across the surface, massaging as you go. Rinse the toothpaste, and say hello to shiny silverware!

This method also works on jewelry and metal kitchen appliances.

6. Baking soda unclogs drains: False

Baking soda contains some acid, which leads many homeowners to believe it can clean toilets and unclog drains. However, baking soda alone won’t unclog your drain. Mix baking soda with vinegar when you need to clear a clogged drain.

Baking soda and vinegar combine to produce a chemical reaction that loosens clogs. Unclogging a drain with baking soda and vinegar is simple:

Pour a pot of boiling water down the drain.

Pour about ½ cup of baking soda down the drain.

Let the baking soda sit in the drain for 3-4 minutes.

Pour a mixture of 1 cup vinegar, 1 cup hot water down the drain.

Place a drain plug over the drain to keep the chemical reaction from rising to the surface.

Flush with another pot of boiling water after about 10 minutes.

7. Vinegar is safe to use on hardwood floors: False

Vinegar makes a great rinse agent, but is a lackluster cleaner. It removes hard water stains and soap scum but is not strong enough to disinfect surfaces. Additionally, if applied directly, vinegar dulls the finish of hardwood floors.

Instead, use a mixture of pH-neutral soap and water to clean your hardwood floors.

8. Frequent vacuuming ruins carpet fibers: False

Unless you vacuum several times a day, your vacuum won’t damage your carpet fibers. Dirt sitting on your carpet does more harm than a vacuum ever will. By letting dirt and dust build up in your carpet, you’ll also increase your chances of catching a cold or developing allergies.

Vacuum your carpet once or twice a week to keep your fibers (and your lungs) in great shape.

9. Walnuts remove scratches from wood surfaces: True

No homeowner wants to discover scratches in their expensive wood flooring or antique wood furniture. Luckily, you can remove blemishes with walnuts.

Remove the walnut from its shell.

Rub the walnut back and forth along the scratch.

Press your finger against the scratch for 30-45 seconds. This warms the scratch and allows the nut’s oils to sink into it.

Let the oil soak for about five minutes.

Buff the area clean with a soft cloth.

10. Making the bed is unhealthy and leads to dust mites: False

Researchers at Kingston University released a study in 2005 claiming that tidy beds harbor dust mites and other allergens. Since then, many homeowners have used this study as an excuse not to make their beds.

The truth is, both made and unmade beds harbor dust mites. Unless you are allergic to dust mites or have asthma, dust mites don’t pose much of a threat to you or your health. Whether you suffer from respiratory problems or not, your strongest defense against dust mites is washing your bedding once a week.

Dust mites also like humidity, so consider installing a dehumidifier to discourage dust mites from setting up shop in your bed.

Now that you’ve separated fact from fiction, you can keep these pointers in mind as you clean and organize your house. And take a look at our other blogs for more cleaning tips and tricks.
