The 27th Annual Lake Arrowhead Antique & Classic Wooden Boat Show June 2-5, 2011 brought 2 more awards to McCall Boat Works, Don and Molly Hardy, for the newly restored 1952 Chris Craft Racer Happy Days. She won "Best Chris Craft" and "Best of Show" at the Southern California ACBS hosted Boat Show.

Thanks to the owners, Ed and Nancy Alexander, of Lomita, California for the opportunity to fully restore her!! And thanks to the Southern California's Chapter of the ACBS for a great weekend a great show!!

It's A New Woody Day!!

This year we are taking a beautiful 1952 Chris Craft Racing Runabout HAPPY DAYS R-19-415 to the Lake Arrowhead Show June 4 & 5th 2011. She will be a show stopper.

She has been stored with us for 3 years: wood rotten, screws broken, decayed, all planks cracked ..........needing a total restoration. Well, she got one.

Engine removed.

Boat Flipped.

Old bottom removed.

New frames, keel, chines, stem and gripe.

New 3M5200 bottom.

Then she was flipped for all new side and top planking and bunging.

AND then lots and lots of sanding and fairing.

PERFECT

Here comes the stain and finish work.

The black walnut is an eye striking contrast.

Beautiful.

RAINMAKER 1949 Chris Craft Racing Runabout 19'

Don accompanied the owner to Michigan where an on-site survey was conducted and LION was purchased and brought to McCall Boat Works for new finishes/transom work/new hull id numbers

McCall Boat Works did an array of work on this boat to include:

removal of seven layers of bottom paint
removal of ~1300 bung holes filled with 3M5200 to fill with Quick-fair
re-faired bottom
3 coats of CPES/6 coats of Petite Primer Barrier Coat/3 coats of red bottom paint
moved the water line up 2"
removed LION gold leaf; prepped transom for RAINMAKER
re-moved all live seam caulking (life caulk) and filled with Sika-flex (per owner request)
stained all live seams
22 coats of varnish/wet sand between coats

Okay............We're back!!!!!!!!!! The blogger needed a blog vacation. But, now, I am back.

Let's talk about WINTER which means BOAT STORAGE!!
Our BOAT STORAGE FACILITY is unique. It is a dirt floor facility. That is an added bonus when it comes to wood boats.

Our wood boat customers enjoy the luxury of NOT having their wood decks and planks dry out, move and crack. We see this time and time again with customers whom keep their boats in garages/hangars which have a cement floor and may/may not be heated. OUCH and CRACK!
There is nothing more frustrating to a professional restorer than to have their "perfected creation" literally "wrecked" over the course of seven months.

McCall Boat Works cares so much about the preservation of your woodie that this Fall we went into our facility and actually had a water truck "humidify" our facility:

It's A New Woody Day!!

OKAY!!!!!!!!!! I AM BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!

After the Concours I really took some needed R&R which consisted of constant company thru the first of July and then a Family Reunion @ Donner Lake mid-end July...........all of this equals FUN. August has consisted of wondering where the summer has gone (or even started), boating, berry picking and boating...........AND book work...........LOTS!

Retrospectfuly, the Concours brought us 2 significant wins. The "judging system" is on a "universal non-biased point system"; very tough. Winning was a compliment (and a chore) and we are very pleased. We look forward to returning next year.

The month of August brings us to our own ACBS-Payette Lakes Boat Show August 13-15 and the Couer d' Lane Wooden Boat Festival August 20-22. This year, hopefully, winning boats at the Payette Lakes Show will also include motors!! HA HA........amazingly true!! and the Couer d' Lane Show will be good weather and a nice break and needed vacation (2 days) for Don.

It's A New Woody Day!!

Been thinking of how to start this segment and I downloaded this photo and it all became very clear to me............this is it!! Doesn't this say it all? Isn't this why we restore these boats?
Heritage, Pride and a Sense of Belonging???????

Dad......Dad and son..............family, bonding time.............boating time............

Restoring these old woodies keeps the past memories present............

and points the innocent toward the future...........

Heading to the Concourse in the morning is a bit "bitter sweet".
The whole Tahoe thing has been a family ordeal....... it's a boat ordeal.......it is all an ordeal. The whole winter has been an ordeal restoring JUSTICE and TWIN FINN to two pristine pieces of art nostalgia perfection; "for your eyes only".

Now, we have to let our boats float, independently, and we now have to say good-bye to them and turn them over to their owners.

I can't wait to get to the Show to take in all those "other " floating memories.
I cant wait to get there because every other boat restorer and owner have been thru exactly what we have been thru this winter...........only it is "their" story and "their" memories............ built into, around and within "their" boat.

Okay................... I finally have more than a moment to actually sit down and get something "creative" done like this blog spot.
As you know, McCall Boat Works is getting ready to take TWO boats to the Concours d' Elegance in Tahoe June 18-20. This is the "top of the crop".
(As if the Cobra above is not enough to make you drool.............
they (Tahoe) really know how to advertise and get YOU THERE!! ugh!!!!!!!!)

I hear everyone talking about the "boat builders" and how they are scrambling to get the boats finished and how stressed they are ..........HELLOOOO!!!!!??
What about the "errand girl-wife" whom has been round-trip Fruitland-Boise (almost 300 miles) for the umteenth time this month for chrome, parts, glass, motors, Ryobi-what? and what size nut?? So.........See..........it even makes us woman crazy (ier), too!!
But, ya know...........we wouldn't trade it for anything. So...........HOLD ON..........

For most of you woody boaters out there a water test is not a big deal before a June Show in Tahoe. However, in Idaho, it IS a big deal because the ice on the lake has not "transformed" into water.......
AND it is VERY difficult to get this thru the thick skull of your commando-officer/boat-owner/best-friend!!
So.....finally, the BIG day; the owner makes a special trip to FLY here to be WITH YOU on the test day (........ugh.......gee, THANKS)
The ice is actually off the lake (for ten days now (I think)) and the sun is actually shining; there is intermittent rain BUT NOT snow flurries; this is ALL good.
OKAY......here we go......
Car to storage. Boat trailer hooked to car. Transport to Marina. UGHhh........Is the water even high enough NOT to scrape that BRAND NEW BRASS PROP on the cement drop into the water???.... YES!!!!! Made it. Boat off trailer.
Owner happy. All is good.
Boat floating. This is good.
We wait, wait and wait some more........not a DROP of water thru that new 3M5200 bottom.......PERFECT!
Turn over.......come on........turn over........(engine has not been started in........almost...... two years)........Don acts teenage'ish and siphons (yes, that IS what I said) the gas (via mouth) into the line and VVVRRROOOMM!!!!!!! The blast of the Christ Craft motor!!
Again......all is PERFECT!! This is all good. Everyone HAPPY!

Noel Weber is the best when it comes to gold leaf lettering........

he has done plenty of transoms for McCall Boat Works.

I think JUSTICE and MISS PAYETTE are my favorite transoms.

He transforms the transom into another irreplaceable piece

for this 1946 Chris Craft Cust 20' 100% Restoration.

This transom "art" places the boat into/onto another level of

"Antique & Classic Boat History"........

ALL of the lettering is done free hand AND with REAL gold flakes.

Another 3M5200 Bottom DAY!!
1958 Century Resorter 19'

First........ a little history.....
Nearly all the boat manufacturers from the 1920-1960s constructed their bottoms to last approximately six to eight boating seasons. Even with the best maintenance, thru time, most have lurking problems underneath the surface where it’s not visible to the naked eye.

McCall Boat Works has put on many bottoms. Time after time, upon first examination, all appears fairly well….............tight seams, good paint, no exposed fasteners, no cracks, soaks up in a couple of days, etc., etc. However, if one is willing to get a little dirty by climbing into the bilge with an ice pick and flashlight and do some serious poking around ................a whole new view point can be viewed...........ugh!!

Many bottoms' most prevalent problem areas are loosened, broke, or bent fasteners (they are after all, soft brass).

Other common areas of trouble are bottom plank cracks following the fastener lines where screwed into the frames…......again from the planks expanding and contracting over the years. Cracked and/or pushed out chines due to excess pounding and excess debris in the bilge, cracked bottom frames, and more often than not festering rot in the canvas between the inner and outer planking…where you can least likely see it.

The two areas most damage occurs is about 1/3 a mid ships (close to the front seat) where the boat takes most of the pounding, and again near the transom where water likes to sit and spore rot over time.

Unfortunateney, many of these boats have old, and incorrect remedies: caulk or linen to fill the plank seams in order to get a ‘tight’ fit and stop the water from coming in. Also used were hard epoxy products to fill the seams.

All that these ‘fixes’ do are create and many times enhance the current problems............. by furthering the expansion of planks against planks against very tired fasteners..............…resulting in an even worse bottom..........

But, ALL this remains hidden until the bottom planking is removed.
A NEW BOTTOM IS NEEDED
"Let's bring on the 5200 Bottom"
CPES sealer, the 3M5200 and the silicone bronzed fasteners....WHHAALLAA!!

It is put on like a thick like paste then spread to a consistent layer with a trowel. It remains flexible like rubber when cured. If done properly, the 5200 will ooze between each adjoining plank seam to make a watertight, yet flexible fit.

This is it!! It’s hard and messy work, and takes a lot of time to do it correctly. When finished, though, you will have a bottom that will not leak and will out-live everyone involved!!

Hello Don and Molly,
My name is Tim Judd and my wife and I along with my cousin, whom is from Idaho, visited your shop a week or so ago. We are from Kentucky if you remember and you graciously invited us in on a lat evening just before you were going home. I think my cousin Gary spoke with you wife on the phone and gave us directions. We were out there visiting family and doing a road trip into norht Idaho and I insisted we try and fine your shop. We had seen it on Outdoor Idaho and I just love those wooden boats. My wife and I spend a lot of time on our local lake but have never seen an old wooden boat around here anywhere but I will be on the look out from now on. I just wanted to drop an line and say how much we apreciated the kindness of you and your wife. Allowing us to see your shop and talk for a while was one of the highlights of our trip. I would haved loved to have been there in summer time to see them on the water. I'll close by saying thanks once again for your kindness and willingness to take time for a couple from Kentucky.

VICTORY is Back In Town!!

It's A New Woody Day!!

Victory is back!

For those of you that know us, we name our boats after our kids (I know, brilliant).

For example: these are our kids Nataliya and Victor.

"TaTa" is named after Nataliya and

NICE!!

"Victory" is named after our son, Victor.

What a finish!

I am not REALLY sure how this happened BUT "Miss Payette" is NOT named after our next son, Nicholas....oh well...I will show it to you anyway

I just couldn't see naming a 2001 Garwood Speedster Replica

"Nicci" or "St. Nic" or "Nikelodeon".......just didn't fit......so, check HIM out:

He is a remote Riva kid, all the way.

So......."Miss Payette" was simply named "Miss Payette" after, YES!! Payette Lake.

So.......anyways.......back to my story...........

Victory is coming back to town today.

Victory was restored by McCall Boat Works in 2006; it is a 1959 Sportsman. The boat was bought in Sept '08 by Dan Strong from Oklahoma. He actually flew out to Idaho to purchase a different boat from us and fell in love with Victory on the first ride and bought it on site! (Never thought I'd see one of our Idaho boats go to Oklahoma!!)

Dan Strong is a great guy. Knowledgeable and young at heart being in his mid 70's. Most of us will just be thankful to be ticking at 70 something, let alone, getting in and out of woodies and getting the woodies on and off trailers for each use!! Well, needless to say, Dan called us a couple of months ago and said, "Guys, I need to sell Victory. The waves are just too big for her on our lake for a "smooth" ride."

So, Victory was re-sold by McCall Boat Works in April 2010 to Buddy and Shay Wilton of VA., FL., ID., CO........I can't remember what state they are actually "primary residences" ......... So...they are bringing Victory home.

If you are living in or visiting Idaho you may see Victory hanging on the dock @ the Shore Lodge on Payette Lake McCall, Idaho or at the dock @ Redfish Lake Stanley, Idaho. The Wiltons are frequent visitors of both.

Finally, Victory is back where Victory belongs!

here we are April 21 and we could be expecting snow..........again?
wish it could have come during Winter............BUT............i am NOT complaining.
the Spring powder skiing just wont quit!!
oh, yeh! this is suppose to be about boats..............not skiing
