March 22, 1920 – February 1, 2012

Eve, a 3rd generation Victoria resident, was born in the family home “Yaxley” in the Fairfield area and resided there for 88 years before moving to Somerset House in 2008. She was the only child of William Henry and Gertrude Louise (née Blackwell) Lettice.

Eve was also known as Peggy, Evelyn, and “Lettice” during her school years. She attended Poplars School and was a graduate of St. Margaret’s School, Victoria College, and St. Margaret’s Business School. Eve began employment at HMC Dockyard in December 1941, three days before the Pearl Harbour incident, at a time when there were only 9 ladies in clerical or steno positions. That situation rapidly changed in 1942. After 36 1/2 years of employment at the Dockyard, HMCS Naden, and HMCS Malahat, Eve retired in 1978.

Eve always enjoyed sporting activities, including tennis, swimming, curling, golf, and figure skating. She was a National Figure Skating judge and was an active golfer at Uplands Golf Club for 50 years. In her retirement, travel took her all over the world and gave her many unforgettable and cherished experiences. At home, Eve delighted in her vegetable and flower gardens and enjoyed the affection and high regard of her Fairfield neighbours.

Eve wished to thank Dr. Houston, Gordon Banta, Marilyn Jessen, Royal Jubilee Hospital, and Dr. DeMott for all their attention, love and support.

A Funeral Service, followed by a reception, will be held at McCall Bros. Funeral Home, Vancouver & Johnson Streets, at 1:00 pm, Tuesday February 7th. Condolences to the family may be offered below.

October 9, 1917 – January 29, 2012

It’s with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our mother Florence in Victoria, B.C. She passed away peacefully and quite quickly at age 94. Florence was predeceased by Kirk Falconer, her husband of 44 years; Earl Hawkins, her partner of 12 years; her sister Alma (Jim) Cartlidge; and her daughter Deborah Jane Falconer. She is survived by her two daughters Karen (Joe Acquafredda) Falconer and Kim (Chris) Nixon; son Tom (Linda) Falconer; granddaughters Erin Falconer, Kelly Falconer, Sheena Nixon and Jade Nixon; grandson Bryce Nixon; and by her many adored neighbours and friends. Mom was a fun-loving fascinating woman and enjoyed everyone’s friendship to the fullest. We will always cherish the memories of our mother, grandmother and friend. Mom will be missed by us all. Our special thanks go to the Ladies of Sidney Senior Care and in particular to Mercy Sagolili for their kind comfort and care. At mom’s request there will be no funeral service, but the family will hold a celebration of her life at a date to be announced later this winter. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation might consider the Canadian Diabetes Association. Condolences to the family may be offered below.

March 8, 1918 – January 22, 2012

Born in Liverpool, England to Ann Robinson and Albert Edward McDonald, Annie first emigrated to Canada in 1920 and lived in Ontario for a brief period of time. The family moved back to England when Annie was still very small and she grew up in Liverpool and neighboring West Kirby, Cheshire along with her brother, Albert McDonald. During the war she met Harry Tebbs from Hoylake and they were married in 1942. The entire family including Annie’s parents and brother emigrated to Canada in 1952.

Annie was predeceased by husband Harry in 1976 and is survived by daughter Patricia and her husband Michael Claxton, daughter Eileen Tebbs, grandson Christopher Claxton and his wife Tara, great-grandsons Apollo, Heywood and Case Claxton, nephew Michael McDonald and his family, and relatives in England, USA and Australia.

Annie was a charter member of the Victoria Pride Lioness Club and she enjoyed participating in their many functions over the years. Annie resided at her home in the West Saanich/Prospect Lake area for over 60 years.

Many thanks to the nurses and doctors in Emergency and on 4A North at Victoria General Hospital who took such good care of her on her last day. Also many thanks to the staff and home care workers provided through Beacon Community Services. Their assistance made it possible for Annie to safely remain in her home and maintain her independence. She particularly enjoyed sharing stories from her long life with the daily respite care workers and hearing details of their lives.

Annie treasured her family and friends above all else and took particular pleasure in watching her grandson and three great-grandsons grow up. Their visits were the highlight of her life.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 11:00 am at St. Michael’s & All Angel’s Church, 4733 West Saanich Road, Rev. Herbert O’Driscoll officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to BC Childrens’ Hospital Foundation, 360B Harbour Rd. Victoria, BC V0A 3S1.

McCall Bros. Funeral Homes of Victoria, BC: information regarding Barbara Leslie Stephen

July 29, 1921 – November 16, 2011

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our cherished Mum and Grandma this past November. Predeceased by her husband Hugh and sister Myfannwy, Barbara is survived by her children Michael, Susan (John), David (Astrid), and grandchildren Glynn, David, Megan, James, Miranda, Samantha and great grand-daughter Bianca.

Born in Clapham, England, and raised in Ewell, Barbara graduated from Stonar House School in Kent. During the first years of World War II, she worked for Imperial Chemical Industries near London. In 1942, following a trans-Atlantic proposal by telegram, she courageously undertook an Atlantic crossing in a convoy, then crossed Canada, to marry her love, Hugh, who had emigrated to Canada in 1938. He was then a Captain stationed at Fort Rodd Hill, and was soon sent abroad. Barbara made many lifelong friends in her new home as she started her family and volunteered in the community. Throughout her life she volunteered for such organizations as the Salvation Army, the Hospital Auxiliary and the YMYW-CA helping blind swimmers. Later, her love of flowers led to her supporting the Finnerty Gardens at UVIC.

With her genuine interest in all those she met, her graciousness and her sense of humour, she was a wonderful support for Hugh as he entered Municipal politics, becoming Mayor of Victoria

After Hugh’s retirement they had the opportunity to travel together, enjoying many trips in Canada and abroad. But above all, Barbara cherished her family. She kept tabs on all their doings and was always there for each one with a loving smile and her support. Her favourite times were family gatherings, and this past July we all celebrated her 90th birthday. Supported by family and friends in recent years, she was able to stay in her much loved home of 38 years with its magnificent ocean views.

Barbara slipped away after a short illness in November, surrounded by her family. We are grateful for the care and understanding of the doctors and the health personnel who assisted her, particularly the staff at Vic General. Our thanks to the many expressions of support and memories of our Mum that we have received. We miss her a lot.

A private family celebration will be held in the Spring. Condolences may be offered to the family below.

After a long and courageous battle with CBD, Dennis (Denny) Eric Frazer, 71, passed away early Sunday, January 22, 2012 at Sandringham Centre in Victoria, BC.

Dennis is predeceased by his father, Eric Frances Frazer, and leaves behind his mother, Phyllis Valda Frazer. He also leaves behind four children, Cindy (Peter) Whatmough, Scott (Letitia) Frazer, Bonnie (Gordon) O’Neill, and Heather Frazer; his brother Gordon (Jodie) Frazer; his sister Jane (Doug) Newman, as well as his nephews Kris (Katie) Newman and Eric Frazer, and nieces Megan (Chansa) Mbao and Claire (Jon) Helm, as well as many other extended family members and friends.

Dennis was born on August 15, 1940 in Edmonton, Alberta and lived there until school age at which time the family relocated to Peace River where Dennis spent a large portion of his early school years. He had great fondness for this period of his life. He later moved back to Edmonton where he attended McKearnen Junior High School, before moving onto Old Scona Composite High School, Westglen School, and finally graduating from Ross Sheppard High School as class president. Dennis also had many fond memories of summers spent with family and friends on Pigeon Lake in Alberta.

Dennis attended the University of Alberta, where he obtained a degree in Zoology. He also belonged to the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and sang in their choir. He then went on to study dentistry at the University of Alberta and the University of Manitoba. While in Dental School at U of A, Dennis participated in the University Naval Training Division (UNTD) Cornwallis and was awarded Best 1st Year Cadet.

Upon graduation from dental school, Dennis relocated to Victoria where he ran a successful dental practice from 1967 to 1970, before returning to university at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School to become an Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon. Dennis returned to Victoria upon graduation and practised from 1975 until 2005, when his illness forced him to retire early. Dennis loved his work and always said he would practice until “they carried him out”. Dennis held positions as Vice President of the BC Dental Association and President of the BC Society of Oral Surgeons.

Dennis married Denise Warholm in 1967. They were married for 18 years and shared 4 beautiful children.

Dennis was a frequent lecturer for Camosun College’s Dental Hygiene program, which he loved. Subsequently, when faced with early retirement, Dennis pursued a life long dream of teaching, and began teaching for the University of British Columbia School of Dentistry. He was only able to act in this capacity for a couple years, but thoroughly enjoyed the time he had in this role.

Dennis was an athlete that over the years excelled in a variety of sports including football, golf, and skiing. Right up until his illness struck, Dennis could be found rollerblading, biking and downhill skiing. He loved to be outdoors either in the mountains or on the water. Dennis also possessed a passion for travel and in the final chapter of his life managed to visit many countries on his “bucket list”. His only disappointments being that he did not make it to Russia and was never able to make the Trans-Canada train ride.

Dennis was a vital man that will be missed for his sense of humour and passion for life.

The family would like to thank Sandringham Care Centre for the incredible care and support they provided. They also wish to thank Dr. Arguash, Dr. Gheis, Dr. MacMillan and Dr. Biglow.

A Celebration of Life will be held at McCall Bros. Floral Chapel, Vancouver & Johnson Streets, on Sunday January 29, 2012 at 1:00 pm. A reception will follow in McCall’s Family Centre. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Brain Research Centre, 2211 Westbrook Mall, Vancouver, BC, V6T 2B5, or at www.brain.ubc.ca.
