A bit about the new site:

We’ve been digging New Zealand designers, artists, musicians and our general creativity for ages. And we wanted to get the word out there about the emerging talent in New Zealand. Back in 2009, we set up Fashion Guru to showcase new and established Kiwi clothing labels. But that wasn’t enough – there’s just too much creative energy in Aotearoa and we wanted to showcase more of it. macandmae.com was born to do just that.

mccaulay+maestro is all about the creative collective. We’re a group of New Zealanders with a passion for creativity. Artists, musicians, singers, writers, photographers, crafters, we come from every part of the creative spectrum and we’re excited about what’s going on here. We’re always looking out for new talent to share, as well as keeping up with what’s coming out from more established creatives.

The website is a hub to share all the creative talent in New Zealand. To put the freshest new work on the web and share it with other like us. We’ve got heaps of people contributing, checking out the latest gigs, shows, runways, film projects, if its creative we want to know about it.

Madeline capes by Crowns Clothing

Yes capes are in. After spotting one on the recent cover of FQ Magazine and seeing a few celebrities wrapped up in capes, we wanted tell you about Crowns Clothing range of wool capes.

This Wellington-based label released their Madeline capes just in time for winter. The capes are made from vintage 100% New Zealand wool blankets and come in a range of gorgeous colors including saffron, pepper and tangerine.

One of our favorite labels Sunday, who are based in Wellington have had their Winter 2011 collection out for a few weeks now. With gorgeous skirts, knit blazers, tops and trousers there's something there for everyone. The lavender flounce dress is definitely one of favorite pieces. A wearable, pretty and feminine collection, check it out below.

A Salasai + Nick Von K Project

On the evening of April 5th at Hopetoun Alpha in Newton, Auckland, Sin-Mae and I attended this special event which celebrated the launch of Salasai's Spring/Summer 2011/2012 collection and the new season of Nick Von K jewelry. There was also a silent auction of 12 Russ Flatt prints to raise funds for the Red Cross Christchurch Earthquake appeal.

After consuming a few wines, everyone gathered around to watch Julia Deans give a beautiful performance while Julie Van Renen and Mike Holland did a wonderful contemporary dance.

The first of the two short films showcasing each of the designer's collection was "A Strange Love Project" by Salasai. A haunting film that was quite intriguing. Check it out below.

Next was "Beautiful Alchemy" by Nick Von K which was quite a stunning piece about transformation. Watch it below.

Thanks to Sin-Mae for taking these awesome pictures of Nick Von K's Beautiful Alchemy range. The range is also available on the Nick Von K website (http://nvk.co.nz). One of our favourite labels MisteR has come out with a great Winter collection which we're super excited about. It's uber cute and quite stylish!

Reversible jackets, waistcoats, skinny ties and cute bowties are featured in their collection. Also cardigans and vests which are a part of their brand new knitwear range.Check out below, the hooded Spoke reversible jacket which we really really LOVE!!!!

The blue color palette used for some of the pieces is awesome, especially the cardigan below with the dark blue lining. As we have seen so far with most of the Winter collections, it's all about layers and this collection does it quite well with the contrasts of the different layers.

In Good Company

We certainly were in good company tonight as Wellington's freshest talent brought their latest collections out. For four days only Wellingtonians have the chance to pick up some great threads from the In Good Company popup shop at 13 Hunter Street in the city.

Emerging designers, their friends, family and Wellington's fashion conscious elite packed the place, checking out some great gear by labels including Sophie Burrowes, Phillipa and Alice, Sunday, Gul-K, Celine Rita, Hermione Flynn, Katie-Maree Cole, Jinny Chin, Jasmin Sparrow and Falvey. Pretty much all of whom you'll have seen on the Guru before.

Good times were had, great clothes were bought and we're looking forward to seeing them around the streets of Wellington. Locals have until Sunday to get down to 13 Hunter Street and pick up something nice. Unfortunately the great cocktails from Stolen Rum were for tonight only.

NZ Fashion Festival Presented By REMIX & BIG little City - Collection 4

NZ Fashion Festival presented it's last fashion show on Friday night and we had front row seats. Collection 4 featured Huffer, Matchi Motchi, Zambesi Man, Ricochet, Annah Stretton, Bendon, Barkers, Workshop, Tigerlily and Kingan Jones. These labels showcased their Winter 2011 collections with Bendon kick starting the show with some sexy lingerie.

Huffer was up next with their collection "Into the Unknown" which was inspired by the era of exploration and adventure. With a dark color palette the collection featured furs and stripes. This is one of my favourite men's collection.

With Annah Stretton's Autumn/Winter collection, Calamity Jane, it was quite daring with corsets, ruffles, striking fabrics and textures.

Annah Stretton is quoted as saying about this collection “...it’s been about mixing the Wild West with extraordinary femininity and beauty” and that definitely comes through.

Matchi Motchi's collection Made In Space was quite unique and interesting. The knits were beautiful and it really showcases their exceptional tailoring and styling.

Kingan Jones followed with their beautiful Poetic Licence collection that had some wonderful florals and checked fabrics.

Barkers presented their sharp winter collection which featured lots of layering. Another favorite of ours which drew inspiration from the 1960's with the classic silhouettes.

Ricochets Winter 2011 collection The Rebel Set was very rock chic. With inspiration from the 1950s there was fur, leather and animal prints.

A fly looking black tuxedo being paraded on the catwalk got me all excited. I'm a huge Janelle Monae fan and she has been donning a tux ever since she released her song Many Moons!

Workshop Denim was up next which was another favorite with earth toned colors highlighting the collection.

Lots of layering happening in this collection as well with some classic blazers and jackets.

Tigerlily was the last one to reveal their winter collection which was quite bright and colorful. I love the earthy green used in this collection. The camo pants with the brown belt was another favorite.

We thoroughly enjoyed Collection 4 and managed to score the latest issue of REMIX magazine which presented the collection with BIG little City.

Last Nights Party - Stolen Girlfriends Club

Stolen Girlfriends Club set the blogs buzzing around the world with their flashmob style fashion show at the New World Victoria Park supermarket.

Marc Moore, design director of Stolen Girlfriends Club, wanted to showcase their Spring 2011 collection ‘Untitled’ in "a total random and public place".

Which brings us to the Last Nights Party hosted by the Britomart Country Club which was a preview of the Winter 2011 collection. With the catwalk decked out with white picket fences at the Britomart Country Club, we weren't sure what to expect.

After some flashing lights and an intro over the speakers demanding "Play some Britney!!!", out came the models wearing spiked collars and leather cropped jackets.

Fur pieces and bold lilac floral printed pants and jackets were also a part of the collection. I really liked the knits in the collection as well.

It was a really fun collection which everyone loved. For some reason Rihanna's S&M came into mind during the show; think it may have been the spiked collars. Props to Marc Moore for getting behind the DJ set and playing Lykke Li's I Follow Rivers, that totally topped off a great night out with a bit of fashion, G&Ts and a whole heap of gorgeous people!

Wednesday 23rd May 2011, it was approaching 9pm and we wanted to make it there before they rip up the runway. Just what was happening? Stolen Girlfriends Club's Winter 2011 preview fashion show! Located at the Britomart Country Club, we were just a few minutes walk away from being dazzled by music, lights and fashion!

The scene greeted us with tall metallic walls protecting the event from public view, but we soon found the entrance which had on a $20 door sale to enter. All proceeds made from the door sale as to be generously donated to the Christchurch Earthquake appeal, which I personally find it to be a Fab-o-tastic idea! Walking in was a site to remember - turning the corner to see the stage decorated with white picket fencing running parallel to the crowd, with a bar in the middle and side of the room facing the stage, there were seating areas, however most chose to stand.

The people in front of us were a crowd of good lookers with smoking hot styles, it was a classy atmosphere, sexy heels, heels and more heels (which did make me wonder and worry for the patch of grass near the stage for a small moment there).

The atmosphere allowed us to catch up with fellow fashion loving friends, mingle among bodies, sway to the music, while drinking our favourite mixed beverages. As time ticked by we found ourselves and a few others quite eager to see the show, it was proving to have built up well with anticipating guests. Excitement arose as we witnessed lights being jiggled with, and the band of photographers setting up their equipment at the end of the stage, it would seem they were making their final preparations before the big reveal. The music changed, among the whispering we adjust our positions to see anything and everything. And then ...BAM, lights come on and the first model appears.

As each model came out one by one, we were revealed beautiful garments of black & white, with splashes (that lead to parties) of purple, deep reds, blues, tans and fur. With their high socks, sexy boots, flowing garments and relaxed style, we were amazed. Each model walked confidently down the runway of picket fences and overhanging tree, with their edgy wardrobe, confidence and air of pride, they threw off the feel of the 'traditional' neighborhood scenery, it seemed that the people of the Stolen Girlfriends Club were cheekily stating that - 'you will see this, you will see us near you and everywhere, and that just can not be avoided'.

In end, I was damn impressed with the show. As the crowd slowly wonder off while most stay to enjoy the music, and eachother's company, I was left unable to help myself thinking about that one particular garment in white.

The Brady/Wagamama Launch Party

Brady launched their debut Winter Collection - Haiku in wonderful style at Wagamama in Auckland on Wednesday 16th of March.
Invited guests were treated to a goodie bag, Sisters Ridge wines, nibbles and a small show which showcased their debut collection.
The Haiku collection featured silk fabrics with some wonderful daring prints and designs.
Theresa Brady, the creative mind behind the label, mentions “Every garment creates rhythm and flow through each movement. The Brady girl is after fashion with a quirky twist that ensures she will always be noticed and never ignored!”
Brady has also just launched their brand new website - http://www.brady.net.nz/. They are also running a competition for a chance to win $1000 worth of Brady wardrobe. Check their website for more information.

Wellington Cup's Fashion in the Field

You know we love sustainability, and this year it was awesome to see the racing industry showing their support for sustainable fashion at the Wellington Cup. Trentham Racing Club revealed a new look Fashion in the Field event this year, with 2011 being the first time they have awarded the ‘Sustainable Fashionista’ category.
Clothing and accessories had to be made from ethically produced and environmentally friendly fibres, recycled fabrics and materials. Be locally designed and made, or be reused garments bought second hand or a customised old garment made in to a new one.
Eloise Evans took out the inaugural top prize, with a 1930’s inspired outfit that won over the judges. Eloise crafted the dress herself and teamed op shop accessories with a hat made from vintage millinery.
The category looks set to return next year, so sustainable fashionistas start saving/sewing/recycling your outfits now!

Kathryn Wilson - Winter 2011

First Thursdays - 3rd March 2011

Already onto its fifth event, First Thursdays has come a long way since its little spot in St. Kevin's Arcade on K'Road. Now with other venues included such as Te Karanga Gallery, Verona Cafe, Iron Bank, Le Gonda Arcade and Cross Street, First Thursdays has become a huge success in their efforts in showcasing all kinds of creative art forms. As a result it has deeply contributed towards K'Road's creative culture.

Among the art & craft stalls within St. Kevin's Arcade, First Thursdays delivered a mini Zinefest, 3D artworks at Rebel Yell, spoken word at Verona Cafe and street performances on K'Road.

Included also was a fashion show, live painting from Askew One and a live broadcast by KFM on Cross Street.

While at Iron Bank there was interactive art, opera & other musical performances including the band Heart Attack Alley.

With so many different mini-events, people were welcomed and had the freedom to come and go through each one.

With First Thursdays now happening quarterly, the evening unites a variety of unique personalities and interests, turning a typical Thursday evening on K'Road into a festive opening of inspirational fun, shopping, sound, colour, and networking. It pretty much is everything and anything which can entertain your creative senses.

Deryn Schmidt - Nana knows best.

The lovely talent that is Deryn Schmidt is back with her latest collection - named thanks to Nana's old dressmaking books. The Golden Rule continues to show Deryn's love for colour and natural fabrics. The latest collection looks amazing and we hear its great to wear.

The warm colours are really going to brighten the grey cold months ahead. we love the use of gold, burnt orange, red and coral tones to compliment the winter greys, charcoals and blacks.

Deryn points out that ‘The Golden Rule’ as it most commonly recognised, as an ethical code. It states that one has a right to just treatment, and responsibility to ensure justice for others. It is best interpreted as saying: ‘Treat others only as you consent to being treated in the same situation’. Great way to live we think.

Happy New Year Kids. We hope you had a great one. Big Day Out was awesome on Friday - although fashion did seem to take a back seat to plastic ponchos for most of the day. Not that it put a dampener on the Fashion Guru crew - or anyone else from what we could see. Summer is still rocking it out and we're going to be partying hard at a heap of other gigs. Look forward to seeing you in some awesome threads.

We're thrilled to see our friends over at Cherrytree Road have finally launched their online store. It's now a piece of cake to order their awesome collection from this side of the ditch (although we're still hanging out for some Kiwi stockists.
