My dad, Grandad G lives on the other side of the country. My brother and I have not spoken to him in a long time, and while my nephew has met him, neither my niece or Boo have. There are obligatory birthday and Christmas cards, and $25 money cards (gift vouchers) for the little people on their birthdays and Christmas.

Boo’s donor dad, although called dad by Boo does not play a huge fatherly role in her life.

However, we are amazingly blessed to have two wonderful men in our lives.

My step-father, and Boo’s beloved Papa

And his dad, GranDoug

Wishing them both a Happy Father’s Day <3

SQUEE!!!

Today, Boo and I received our much anticipated pre-release DVD of Tinker Bell and The Great Fairy Rescue. Many thanks to Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, Porter Novelli and Aussie Mummy Bloggers for giving us the opportunity to review this beautiful movie.

This movie is set for release on DVD and Blu-ray on September 15th.

Rating: G

Running time: 73 minutes

Release Date: 15 Sep 2010

Genre: Childrens

Year Produced: 2010

Synopsis courtesy of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment: What would you do if you met a fairy? Witness the historic moment when Tinker Bell first meets a human being, and it’s not who you think. Years before meeting Wendy and the Lost Boys, Tinker Bell met Lizzy, a little girl with a steadfast belief in the power of pixie dust and the magic land of fairies. During the fairies’ summer visit to the flowering meadows of England, two very different worlds unite for the first time and Tink develops a special bond with a curious child in need of a friend. As her fellow fairies launch a daring rescue, Tinker Bell takes a huge risk, putting her own safety and the future of all fairykind in jeopardy. Experience Disney’s astonishing all-new movie about the true power of faith and friendship. Bursting with excitement and imagination, TINKER BELL AND THE GREAT FAIRY RESCUE is magical entertainment for the whole family. You might even learn to fly.

Boo had an early start today (Father’s Day Breakfast) so I let her watch the DVD straight after school, and for 73 minutes I never heard a peep from her as she was glued to the screen, munching popcorn! If you remember we also saw this at the cinema about a month ago (here).

This is the 3rd movie of the Tinker Bell/Disney Fairies productions, and I have to say this is my favourite. Boo is sitting on the fence and not committing to a favourite because she loves them all and they’re all different. You could watch this movie without having watched the other 2, though it may take a few minutes to decipher the fairies and their talents.

The story in brief:

A lonely, little girl, Lizzy is being raised by her busy father who does not indulge his daughter’s belief in fairies. Tink, after getting caught, befriends Lizzy and teaches her all about fairies. In the meantime, Tink’s friends have launched a rescue mission with some great adventures and fabulous displays of teamwork. Of course, it all ends happily and leaves us all believing in fairies and the magic of pixie dust!

I asked Boo what her favourite part was, again she’s fence sitting because she loves the whole movie!

What do I love about this movie?

This is a beautiful story, which on a couple of occasions brought me to the brink of tears. I love the independence and courage of Tinker Bell, and for us this is a perfect shift away from many of the movies Boo watches – Princesses/Damsels in Distress meet Prince, get married and live happily ever after!

I would highly recommend this movie for any little girl (and their mummies)!

At the dinner table, Boo and I chat about lots of <strike>interesting </strike>strange things. In the previous weeks, Princess Mary of Denmark was in Australia, and we had talked about how she met Prince Frederick, their two children, and the twins she is pregnant with.

The other night, Boo was talking about what she will do when she grows up.

Boo: Mum, when I grow up I’m going to be famous or a zoo keeper. Did you know Amy* wants to be a princess? I told her that you can’t do that!

Me: No, to become a princess you need to marry a prince.

Boo: (recalling that Denmark has a young prince) Maybe I could go to Denmark, learn how they talk and marry Prince Christian?

Me: Hmmm, that might work!

Boo: He’s nearly 5 and I’m nearly 5. I’ll have to go soon so that he can fall in love with me before he falls in love with someone else.

Me: Or maybe you could wait till you’re a bit older.

Boo: Alright when I’m a teenager and then I can move into the palace with him!

So the girl has big plans… at least she’s more realistic than thinking she can grow up and choose to be a princess

* Names changed to protect the innocent

I’ve been keeping a secret from you all for a few months now.

I started a new hobby. After the brain overload that returning to study brought earlier this year, reading to wind down and de-stress wasn’t an option. I was doing too much reading!

I taught myself to C-R-O-C-H-E-T….

ssshhhh! Don’t tell anyone!

When you think of crocheting you think of your Nanna making intricate lace doilies, or worse though obscenely coloured knee rugs.

I know that’s what you were thinking. That’s why I didn’t tell you.

The interwebs and especially youTube have an abundance of how to crochet, how to knit, how to do anything at all! It was all very helpful, and over the past few months, <strike>sitting by the fire, only working in candlelight</strike> I managed to make this throw for the spare room.

And with the left-over yarn thought I’d make myself something

Needless to say both items have been tagged by Boo as hers – as long as I crochet some flowers for the bottom of her hat!

Yesterday Boo and I were fortunate enough to attend the pre-screening of the Disney Classic ‘Beauty and the Beast’ in 3D.

Boo owns this movie in 2D and as you can imagine we have seen it countless times, though we couldn’t refuse the offer of a 3D big screen viewing.

If you have a little girl (or even a little person) enchanted by princesses, or if you yourself love a classic romantic tale then I can highly recommend a trip to the cinema for this one.

There were a few <strike>new</strike> altered scenes from the original to enhance the 3D effect and I’m convinced Belle’s had some work done around her eyes and mouth (???) but apart from that it’s still my favourite Disney Classic with my favourite Disney Princess

Apparently Disney are in the process of giving ‘The Lion King’ a 3D make-over, so don’t be surprised if ‘Beauty and the Beast’ is only the first of a long line of Disney Classics to re-appear on the big screen in 3D.

Father’s Day is coming up very soon.

Boo has already made a decision at ‘little’ kindy (without any input) that the gift she is making is for her Grandpa.

She made the decision on her own, that she was inviting Grandpa to the Father’s Day Breakfast at school. I did ask her if she would like me to ask her dad, but was told a very definite, NO.

I was the helper at Boo’s kindy today.

This morning the teacher, Mrs C read a story about a little boy and his dad. I felt Boo snuggle a little closer on my lap. Some of the children then told what their dads look like, and what they like doing with their dads.

Boo had sort of tuned out and was facing away from the group of children. Mrs C then asked her what she liked to do with her mum, or her family. Boo happily answered that she likes when I take her to concerts like Swan Lake.

The children were going to start making Father’s Day cards and gifts today. The children went to their various activities. My helper job was painting the serving trays the children made a couple of weeks ago. Boo had already done hers, so was not in my group. She became clingy and teary. Would not go and play with her friend’s and became very possessive of me.

The teachers and I were very surprised at Boo’s behaviour. This is very out of character, and the teachers had never seen her like this.

She was back to her normal self by morning tea time.

It hit me when I left at lunchtime.

Boo was probably processing her feelings, and a little insecure listening to all the other children talk about their dads.

I had a rough afternoon beating myself up with mummy guilt of not realising at the time what her problem was, but I have been making up for it with lots of cuddles this evening.

I have asked her what was bothering her this morning and she said she felt a little sad because she wanted to be in my group at kindy. I haven’t suggested what I think was upsetting her.

At least with all the cards and gifts going to Grandpa this year, I won’t have to deal with the icky poem from last year!

Boo owns every Barbie movie. She watches them over and over again.

I’m pretty sure I have seen them all… They may be annoying but the majority do have some great moral teachings!?!

One of Boo’s favourites is ‘Barbie in a Swan Lake.’

Last night, I took Boo to see ‘Swan Lake on Ice.’ She absolutely LOVED it (and so did I)!

Looking through the programme while waiting for the show to start, she made a comment about Odette “She doesn’t look very much like Odette!” Stifling my laughter, I explained not everyone can look like Barbie!

Barbie scores points though.

Even if “Barbie in a Swan Lake” has somewhat used poetic licence in altering the story line a <strike>little</strike> fair bit, Boo knew the gist of the story, and was able to identify the characters to understand what was happening.

I remember being about her age when my mum took me to see the Moscow Ballet perform Swan Lake, and although my mum had explained the story and the characters to me, I’m not sure I appreciated the experience as much as Boo did.

As a direct result of her Barbie viewing, Boo has developed a great love for music by Tchaikovsky and frequently has this on in the background while she plays, and ballet dances around the house.

So yes, I am scoring Barbie movies 10 points for cultural enhancement of small children

My poor scruffy mutt puts up with a lot of things from Boo.

There was the time when she was teething and she bit his tail.

There have been numerous times when she’s pulled his hair… I think she may even have cut his hair?

He takes it when she yells at him and pushes him out of her cubby house.

He allows her to put his leash on and lead him around the back garden. I touch the leash and there is massive excitement that we might be going somewhere!

They both quite often lie on the lawn together.

She likes to brush him, and this weekend just gone…

He put up with some grooming!

The birthday party season has again begun for Boo. Seems she attracts friends (a lot of them) who celebrate their birthdays from August through to January. Happened last year at ‘little’ kindy and it appears we are going to do the same again with school friends!

So to get the season started, 5 little girls went bowling… on the lane next to 8 little boys. Separate parties though combined for the birthday cake, food and singing. Birthday girl and birthday boy are cousins, both in Boo’s class at school with birthdates, 2 days apart.

This was the first time bowling for nearly all of these 4-5 year old kids. There was a squished finger (or two, or three) from the impatience of waiting for the ball of their colour choice to reappear, other than that they had a ball.

And the parent’s had almost as much fun watching and helping…
