Book: Surface Detail

It begins in the realm of the Real, where matter still matters. It begins with a murder and it will not end until the Culture has gone to war with death itself.

Lededje Y'breq is one of the Intagliated, her marked body bearing witness to a family shame, her life belonging to a man whose lust for power is without limit. Prepared to risk everything for her freedom, her release - when it comes - is at a price, and to put things right she will need the help of the Culture.

Benevolent, enlightened and almost infinitely resourceful though it may be, the Culture can only do so much for any individual. With the assistance of one of its most powerful – and arguably deranged – warships, Lededje finds herself heading into a combat zone not even sure which side the Culture is really on. A war – brutal, far-reaching – is already raging within the digital realms that store the souls of the dead, and it's about to erupt into reality.

It started in the realm of the Real and that is where it will end. It will touch countless lives and affect entire civilisations, but at the centre of it all is a young woman whose need for revenge masks another motive altogether.

Michael Haneke's profound mystery in stark B&W. The daily lives of ordinary people in a small North German village just before the beginning of 'The great War' is steeped in unquestioned patriarchal fears and puritanical traditions.
Book: Listen to Your Sister by Neena Viel

Publisher's blurb: Twenty-five year old Calla Williams is struggling since becoming guardian to her brother, Jamie. Calla is overwhelmed and tired of being the one who makes sacrifices to keep the family together. Jamie, full of good-natured sixteen-year-old recklessness, is usually off fighting for what matters to him or getting into mischief, often at the same time. Dre, their brother, promised he would help raise Jamie–but now the ink is dry on the paperwork and in classic middle-child fashion, he's off doing his own thing. And through it all, The Nightmare never stops haunting Calla: recurring images of her brothers dying that she is powerless to stop.

Book: The Lives Of The Muses: Nine Women & the Artists They Inspired

Francine Prose explores the complex relationship between the artist and his muse. In so doing, she illuminates...the elusive emotional wellsprings of the creative process. Copyright is 2002, so it's only in the final chapter(s) that the book moves into a position of examining the role of women as artist finding her inspiration in the artist she collaborates with.
CW: addiction, abuse, death, and a largely hetero-normative & somewhat misogynistic history of women as muses and men as artists.

Movie: Pictures of the Old World

This was voted by the local critics as the best Slovak film of all time. It's a fascinating art documentary where old villagers from isolated Carpathian Mountains talk about their life. Most of these rural folks are toothless, uneducated, primitive farmers, who "haven't been deformed by civilization." They recount interesting stories of lonely and unhappy lives, and many have only one last animal to keep them company. Dušan Hanák, the director, keeps trying to solicit an answer for lessons they had learnt out of life, but they have no idea what he's after. It's unadorned, poetic and harsh. It's available for free viewing on YouTube.
