The Web Developer will develop and maintain interactive web services for external and internal users. This position will support the Chicago Public Radio's content management system, and work closely with external partners for site upgrades/changes, maintenance and the development of new web products and services.

Duties and Responsibilities

Programming and maintenance of website infrastructure and content management system (CMS)
Working with the IT team to ensure a properly administrated server environment
Acting as station’s liaison with external content providers and consultants on technology issues
Work with organizational teams to create useful and engaging web applications
Be the in-house expert of our content management system
Develop, test, and document custom CMS components
Lead the development of new web products
Communicate project scope, timeframe, and progress to staff
Work autonomously to design, code, test, document, and debug programs
Provide technical guidance as needed to internal users
Keep abreast of new technologies in the web development field

Education Required
Computer Science degree or equivalent training.

Experience/Skill Required
5 years web development experience in PHP and MySQL platforms. Thorough understanding of the Drupal content management system is required in addition to strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, XML, JavaScript, AJAX, and JQuery. Knowledge of web standards, and cross-browser development is required. Demonstrated ability to leverage open source tools solutions. This position requires the ability to manage several projects under multiple deadlines, the ability to work both independently and with external consultants. Clear and concise communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non technical people. This is not a graphic design position, but the ideal candidate will be familiar with preparing graphics for delivery on the web.

PR/Publicity/Marketing interns assist our publicists by updating databases, proofreading copy, sending out advance books, and maintaining press files. All interns spend a certain amount of time filing, sending out mass mailings, photocopying and helping out in the comics and graphic novel library.

Interns at Fantagraphics receive the opportunity to learn about the comics-publishing process; they also gain knowledge of various aspects comics industry (the differences between the comic-shop market and the bookstore market, distribution, creator’s rights, etc.). Please be advised that all comics are created off-site: interns do not write or draw comics during internship hours, although if someone in the office has the spare time, they're often happy to critique independent projects completed outside of the internship. In fact, no one at the office writes, draws, pencils, inks or letters comics during business hours. Interns' hours are scheduled during the Monday-Friday 10:00-6:00 time period. A minimum of 10 hours a week is required.

I'm not versed in the proper terminology when it comes to creating an interactive website, so I don't know if "designer" or "developer" is the correct term. I'm posting for a friend - he is currently soliciting bids for an interactive web page he wants to set up in the very near future. His Google-fu is lacking and thus far his pool of candidates seems to be limited to (IMHO) companies with flashy ads. I'm thinking that there are MeFites out there who have the skills he's looking for and would work more one-on-one with him. Here is a brief description of what he's looking for:

This is a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a website design with interactive content, e-commerce, and web hosting setup. Website design is to have two (2) pieces of custom artwork to be produced from a written narrative describing each piece. Additional information to be provided and questions resolved during the development phase. The site will be based on a 5-day week. The week will begin on Monday with an opinion bullet and an opinion piece to expand on the bullet. An interactive poll and quiz will follow on Tuesday continuing Monday’s theme. A roundtable discussion will carry the theme on Wednesday. Thursday will be a review of the past week’s news, some of which will touch on the established theme. Friday will post the final poll and quiz results with comments and analysis.

The full RFP give more detailed information. Most of our work is in Ruby and XSLT, so experience with either is useful, but not strictly necessary, as we assume that talented developers will be able to learn new languages without difficulty. Experience with clustering, agile development methodologies (we use SCRUMM and some pair programming), web services and unit testing are also potentially useful. Familiarity with Unix is required.

A security clearance is a major plus- new hires who don't have one will be sponsored for one (as such, we can only hire U.S. citizens).

I'm building a site for a client and am able to do everything no problem but have never built anything that takes Paypal before. The client already has Paypal Pro but I find it a bit confusing.

Site is hosted on Dreamhost if that matters.

Client would prefer that visitor never leaves their site (ie, is never taken to Paypal's site), which apparently is a feature of Paypal Pro.

Form is basic (name, address, etc) and purchasing options are simple: it's for a fundraising dinner so the customer can purchase one or more plates or a table (equivelant to 10 plates). That's it!

Dreamboat Records, home to music by a bunch of folk and electronic acts from the UK and a couple of indie film soundtracks, is looking for someone to replace our rather unprofessional and fiddly Paypal-based shopping cart with something more modern, user-friendly (for both customer and order picker), and (probably) self-hosted.

Our main goal with this upgrade is to make it more straightforward to pick and ship orders, and audit sales afterward. At the moment, our total dependence on the Paypal interface (as well as its payment processing) makes that a pain.

For the time being, we're happy to continue to process the credit card payments themselves with Paypal, but suggestions of alternative payment gateways — that will work for a company that is based in the UK but accepts payments from worldwide — are very welcome. Keep in mind that we need to audit both total revenue and revenue after the payment company takes their fee. In general this varies from transaction to transaction in a non-trivial way, so I'm hoping payment gatways report both numbers.

Our website is hosted on a Mediatemple Gridserver, which will give you an idea of what it is capable of, but I'm happy to answer specific questions about the technical parameters. We're told that Ubercart/Drupal/Python and ActiveMerchant/Rails/Ruby are the preferred way of doing things these days, but perhaps you know better. Our needs seem fairly standard, so this should just be a case of installing something, integrating it with a payment gateway, and perhaps setting up an example product or two so I can take it from there.

We'd love to get this done before the end of the year.

Looking for someone who can build a CMS-site for us.

We want to build an easy to manage CMS website, with a blog, newsletter opt-in, some restriced areas (where visitors would have to give us an e-mail address before being able to download some information), RSS-feeds for the blog part, that sort of thing.

The lay out and design end will be handled by third parties, as well as a style sheet to base the website on, but we are looking for a tech person to execute these designs/style sheets rapidly and to spec into a functional website, while complying with current SEO techniques and accepted industry standards.

In the tag area, I mentioned Drupal and Joomla, but only because these terms are thrown around a lot by the people I contact. Other CMS-solutions would be fine, if you can explain us why. We have little or no in house technical knowledge, so be prepared to explain thoroughly!
