About TechSoup Global:

TechSoup Global is a nonprofit organization that has been successful in creating a suite of high impact services that facilitate corporate philanthropy and benefit community service organizations in a financially sustainable model. For more than two decades, our mission has been to work toward the day when every community service organization on the planet has access to the technology resources and information they need to achieve their own missions. Founded in 1987, we currently have more than 170 staff members and an annual budget of about $23 million. TechSoup Global helps other nonprofits better serve their missions by acquiring and using technology, implementing web and social networking, and receiving grant funding and product donations.

Working with capacity-building partners across the world, TechSoup Global is actively expanding our program outside the US. We establish partnerships with in-country NGOs to implement our highly effective product donation program, while adapting to local business practices, laws, and cultural imperatives. In the process, we’re building a global network of partners all focused on empowering NGOs through the effective use of technology. We’re in 22 countries to date and adding more each month.

Through our TechSoup Stock website, nonprofits find a broad range of software donated by leading tech companies such as Microsoft, Cisco, Symantec, Intuit, and Adobe, along with content and community resources tailored specifically for a nonprofit audience. To date we have enabled over $1 billion in technology donations world wide.

Based upon the strength of our global network, our expertise in building scalable web systems, our history of working both with donors and with recipient NGOs, and our experience building one of the fastest growing sustainable social enterprises, TechSoup Global was recently selected to build a new service for international philanthropy. Backed by major foundations and key philanthropy sector partners, this new service will create a global database of nonprofits and NGOs, making it easier and less costly for international grantmakers to provide cash grants to social benefit organizations in countries outside the U.S.

TechSoup Global is dedicated to creating and supporting an environment of openness, trust, and fun where people's differences are valued and respected, and where people of diverse backgrounds participate fully in our organization. We believe that the diverse cultures and perspectives of our staff will help us better serve our clients. TechSoup Global is an equal opportunity agency and will not allow discrimination based upon ethnicity, race, color, citizenship, creed, religion, size, weight, height, ancestry, national origin, age, sex, gender, gender identity, pregnancy or childbirth, marital status, domestic partner status, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, physical or mental handicap, medical condition, AIDS/HIV status, veteran status, or socioeconomic background.

Developer to install Paypal Pro-enabled form on web site (Toronto, ON, Canada)

I'm building a site for a client and am able to do everything no problem but have never built anything that takes Paypal before. The client already has Paypal Pro but I find it a bit confusing.

Site is hosted on Dreamhost if that matters.

Client would prefer that visitor never leaves their site (ie, is never taken to Paypal's site), which apparently is a feature of Paypal Pro.

Form is basic (name, address, etc) and purchasing options are simple: it's for a fundraising dinner so the customer can purchase one or more plates or a table (equivelant to 10 plates). That's it!

Project needs fast turnaround. Send me a quote for what you'd charge and how fast you could get it done. Examples of where you've done this before would also be appreciated.

Please apply to me at ysstog at gmail.com--do not memail me about the job as I rarely check that.

I can pay you via Paypal or you are in Toronto and prefer cash we can do that too.

Web developer to install shopping cart on record label website (Munich (CET)/Bristol (GMT))

Dreamboat Records, home to music by a bunch of folk and electronic acts from the UK and a couple of indie film soundtracks, is looking for someone to replace our rather unprofessional and fiddly Paypal-based shopping cart with something more modern, user-friendly (for both customer and order picker), and (probably) self-hosted.

Our main goal with this upgrade is to make it more straightforward to pick and ship orders, and audit sales afterward. At the moment, our total dependence on the Paypal interface (as well as its payment processing) makes that a pain.

For the time being, we're happy to continue to process the credit card payments themselves with Paypal, but suggestions of alternative payment gateways — that will work for a company that is based in the UK but accepts payments from worldwide — are very welcome. Keep in mind that we need to audit both total revenue and revenue after the payment company takes their fee. In general this varies from transaction to transaction in a non-trivial way, so I'm hoping payment gatways report both numbers.

Our website is hosted on a Mediatemple Gridserver, which will give you an idea of what it is capable of, but I'm happy to answer specific questions about the technical parameters. We're told that Ubercart/Drupal/Python and ActiveMerchant/Rails/Ruby are the preferred way of doing things these days, but perhaps you know better. Our needs seem fairly standard, so this should just be a case of installing something, integrating it with a payment gateway, and perhaps setting up an example product or two so I can take it from there.

We'd love to get this done before the end of the year.

[This position was previously advertised on MeFi in a rather different form (involving authorized MP3 downloads). We ran out of time to set that up for the project we needed it for, and went with a pre-rolled solution.]

Freelance writer in London needed (London)

We have an occasional need (5-6 times a year) to have someone cover a tradeshow in London. Typically we send somebody, but the cost is getting to be an issue. So we're looking to cultivate a relationship with a solid freelance writer living in London, who would be interested in reporting on these shows.

Typically, it involves two separate pieces of content: (1) Walk the tradeshow floor and write a wrap-up piece of what's new and interesting there, and (2) spend a day in the sessions, pulling mini-stories out of specific ones. We would give a couple of months' advance notice, so that you could make sure you're available on the days needed.

Please reply with a sample or two, as well as your going rate in USD. Thanks!

Web Designer and Developer (Norcross, GA)
Applicants should be experts at creating usable, standards-compliant, valid HTML and CSS Web sites by hand (not Dreamweaver). Applicants should be well versed in Flash and should have an excellent portfolio including both Flash and non-Flash sites.

Applicants should have a love of history and an interest in education. Graphic design skills are preferred, as is experience with JavaScript, PHP, MySQL, and Ajax. We want someone who can delve deeply into code, but who can also collaborate with a team to design an interactive museum game, and who can talk intelligently to clients. Applicants must be able to work independently without intensive supervision: for the right candidate, this will be a feature, not a bug.

Day to day tasks include meeting with clients, working with project managers and the rest of our design team to develop concepts, working independently to develop Web sites and interactive elements, and working with IT staff to assess needs and solve problems.

Starting salary is competitive and is based on education and prior experience with potential for significant advancement, including potential training to be a project manager. In addition to salary, we offer benefits, including health insurance, 401k, and paid vacation.

Brockington and Associates is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Applicants and employees are treated without regard to race, color, gender, religion, national origin, age, veteran status, or disability.

In your application, please include a link to your online portfolio, or links to at least three sites you have created. Please tell us your role in creating these sites. You may include this information in the application itself, in a resume uploaded with the application, or as a separate document uploaded with the application. We cannot consider applicants without online work samples.

System Administrator (Linux) (2770 Dufferin St, Toronto, ON)

FreshBooks has been helping our clients take the pain out of invoicing since 2004. We're a small team working towards a common goal: building a kick-ass online invoicing application to help small businesses better manage their finances.

The success of FreshBooks is completely dependent on a fast and reliable infrastructure. If you're a well-rounded sysadmin with web application chops, we'd like you to help us continue to exceed our customers' expectations.

You will:

Join in the responsibility for maintaining our good reputation for availability, performance, and security. You will work with our lead system administrator and the rest of the team here to learn our current architecture and become a key contributor to developing and implementing our technical plan for growth. You'll also share responsibility for our internal IT needs, office network, development systems, users' desktops, and whatever else we might be doing at the time. It does get busy around here, so you'll need plenty of energy!

We need you to have:

5-7 years of Linux system administration experience (SAGE Level III), preferably with Red Hat or Ubuntu Linux

Experience building or maintaining a high-performance, highly-available Linux/Apache/MySQL environment

Thorough understanding of networking concepts and firewalls

Programming experience in sh, and in a dynamic language like PHP or Perl

Hands-on experience implementing secure servers and networks

Experience maintaining Windows or OS X desktops

Demonstrated proficiency communicating with users, developers, and upper management

Attention to detail, ability to work without close supervision and a passion for professional system administration practice

We hope you have:

A working knowledge of Web 2.0

Familiarity with configuration management and source control systems

Experience with PCI DSS compliance

Experience with office phone systems

Informed tastes in coffee and beer

Excellent writing skills, and a hankering to blog

This position requires after-hours and holiday on-call support.
Web Developer (Perl, PHP, MySQL, client-side) (NYC preferred, but if you're the best candidate, anywhere is fine)

After spending eight years single-handedly building and maintaining Publishers Marketplace, a database-driven site for publishing professionals, I'm now looking for someone to help.

This is a LAMP site, where "P" is largely Perl, with some PHP thrown in. A qualified applicant would be proficient in both Ps, would be comfortable working with a MySQL database, and would have lots of experience with client-side programming. Above all, we're looking for someone who is trustworthy and discreet.

This position is part time, probably about 5 to 10 hours a week after a training period, but I'm hoping that it will grow into something bigger.

For details and application instructions, please consult the full job posting on the Publishers Lunch Job Board.

Senior C++ developer with Deep Knowledge (Palo Alto, CA)

Your area of expertise can be Windows, OS X or Linux, but you should know the API well and have a lot of experience.

You should be well versed in multi-threaded programming, and understand related concepts thoroughly.

Additionally, you should be (or on your way to being) an expert in one (or more) of the following areas: graphics (OpenGL, D3D, Apple's Core* stuff, etc), AI (machine learning, data-mining, stuff involving bloom filters and Bayesian learning, etc), Programming Languages (compilers, interpreters, etc), Webbrowsers (extensions, ML-based rendering, etc), or Operating Systems (kernal programming, transactional memory stuff, etc).

The company is a well-funded startup, the team is top-notch (so you should be as well), and the compensation is worthy of your status. Now is your opportunity to practice your craft unhindered by red-tape and corporate politics, and make a huge impact on the final product.

Web Design/Flash Design for Scientific Visualization (Durham, NC )

Our environmental sciences lab is looking for someone to put the final polish on a number of web apps, portals, and visualization products we've developed. Many more products are in the pipeline, so we hope to make this a long term position.

While we're still defining the job description, we feel it's going to be easier to get a designer up to speed on the science than a scientist or programmer up to speed on usability and aesthetics. Our core expertise is in mapping and GIS. We need to expand our skills towards more general information graphics. Think of the dynamic diagrams on the New York Times website, Edward Tufte, etc.

I don't want to get more specific, because the important thing here is finding someone with the creative skills and we want to see who is out there. I don't want to get bogged down in specific technologies (although Flash seems to be a must for our short term direction) because intellectual curiosity is more important, as is the confidence to apply past design experience in what might be an entirely new direction.

Senior PHP Developer for web dev firm (Tempe, Arizona)

We (Synapse Studios) need a senior PHP developer with PHP 5/OO experience who can step in and help guide the growth we're expecting in the near-term. We've gotten along now for a few years with some great developers, but no one with structured experience who can bring our architecture and coding methodologies to the next level. That's who we're looking for.

We're also looking for someone that knows how to write clean and efficient PHP5 object oriented code at the enterprise level. Here is a list of our "absolutely-must-have" requirements:

* PHP 5 - object oriented experience
* SQL knowledge: basic and advanced (i.e. stored procedures, views, triggers, etc)
* HTML (can code by hand or in sleep)
* Subversion or other version control systems
* Some HTTP experience (you should know the difference between GET versus POST, what a 404 is versus a 200, 301 redirect, etc)
* Regular expressions (at least able to understand them even if they give you horrible, horrible nightmares)
* Model-View-Controller (MVC) experience (via frameworks such as Kohana, Zend, Cake, or Symfony for example)
* AJAX by way of jQuery, YUI or any other popular libraries
* Knowledge of design patterns
* Apache and mod_rewrite experience
* Linux system administration skills
* Extensive Javascript and CSS knowledge
* Experience with at least one other language (C, Perl, Java, Python, Ruby)
* Using and writing APIs

We need someone on site in Tempe, Arizona, but we're open to helping people relocate.

We're a younger group of motivated web developers and our company is growing rapidly. We keep things fun and interesting, have great office space in the downtown district, and do our best to give back to our community. Find more out about us at our site.

This is your first test, so don't screw it up...
To apply, send ALL of the following to jobs at synapsestudios dot com:

1. Your resume
2. Some samples showing off what you can do
3. Include the job title in the subject line of the email

Portraitist (New York, New York)

These days, images of ourselves are constantly around us. Digital photos, video, ID cards, avatars, on and on and on. I'm documenting my life in a different way: by commissioning annual(ish) portraiture in pre-digital media (painting, printing, illustration, sculpture, film photography, etc.), in what I'm calling The Portrait Patron Project. I'm excited about the project because it both indulges my interest in portraiture and my desire to use my discretionary income to support the creation of original art.

The first portrait in the project was funded by a portion of my stimulus payment (just about the only good thing I ever got from George W. Bush) and was created last summer by limnrix, and I'm now looking to commission the next portrait in the series.

If you are interested, please email me with examples of your work, and we will discuss the possibilities and my price range. If you are not in the New York area, please let me know about your experience in working from reference (rather than a live subject). Please let me know if you have any questions.
