RA to track RSS market through Fall (Philadelphia)

I am a professor at a business school studying entrepreneurship. I am looking at the way in which the sunsetting of Google Reader is creating an opportunity for new ventures. Observing what pops up, and when, and what business models they follow, will be both interesting and help us answer some important questions about how new players enter the market and how markets are segmented.

So, I want to find an RA or two who would want to help me put together a list of companies/products in the RSS space, when they enter, what features they have, etc. and to track the space through the fall. We can go through details, but it will essentially be keeping up a spreadsheet on the subject. I would like to find people who care about the space, or about the products in it, and who are up to speed on the RSS world.

This would likely take a few hours a week, every week, through Fall. I have research funds available to pay at hourly rates (RA funds, so better than Starbucks, but not by that much), and I hope that I could also make the research useful and interesting for those interested in academia or, potentially, an MBA.

Laptop Repair (On/Off Button) (Brooklyn, NY (Manhattan or Queens OK - I can travel))

I have a cheap Dell laptop (Studio series). The screen recently broke while I was in another city. In the process of replacing it, one of the wires connecting the power button became brittle and broke. The tech didn't have time to order a new button (I was flying out the next day) but said it should be fairly simple for someone to replace.

I'm trying to squeeze a few more months out of this laptop as I can't afford a new one right now. (And the 30 minute time limit on the Brooklyn public library computers is killing me!)

I need a personal/portfolio site (anywhere)

Hi, I work as a writer and editor and 'm looking to get a website built so potential employers can see my work and resume/CV.

A little more information: I don't need my site to be real fancy, just clean, professional and easy for people to see what I have done.

I would need a homepage that connects to downloadable CV access (click here for) and three other areas/pages: one for journalism work samples, one for corporate/technical samples and one for ecommerce samples. I would need for those files to be downloadable, too.

I am not a designer, but a thought that the samples pages might have to have short descriptions of the work samples (that I would write) and small images that can be clicked on so visitors can read and download the things I have written. In my line of work, it is essential that people be able to download the files.

I'd be grateful if people could let me know what they think, share estimates of time and costs and if possible, access to their portfolios. Thanks! Oh, I have no idea what would be reasonable to pay for something like this, hope you can let me know.
Driver/chaperone from hospital (Wedgwood to UW and back)

I am participating in a study at UW. I will be getting an upper endoscopy, and will be sedated. I will not be able to participate without having a driver. I need to be at the hospital by 8:30 am on May 22nd, and they say I will be there for 2-3 hours. I just need someone to take me to the hospital, wait there, and then take me home.

There will be no real hospital care, and last time I had one, my wife was available for the ride. I walked myself to the car afterwards, proceeded to pass in and out of consciousness, but still helped give her directions home, and walked myself inside without being carried. This should be a pretty stress free way to grab a few extra bucks for not much work. I will pay for any parking fees associated as well.

Also, I am in the process of trying to reschedule. If I can, I will not need any assistance, but I wont know until I hear back. Please email me if you will be available this day and I will get back in touch with you in just a couple days to let you know more info. If you think you might have to cancel last minute or something, please do not reply, as this is for some serious, hopefully life changing, medical care for myself, and do not want to mess it up by not having a driver.

Develop Android Games and Kids Experiences (Encino CA 91436)

Brandissimo!, Inc - an awesome kids entertainment company located in Encino, Ca is looking for an in-house Android developer to join our team building games and other kids experiences for multiple mobile/tablet platforms.

The ideal candidate right off the bat is someone who works well on creative, fun projects, and works well in teams of people trying to develop same. We've been doing this a while, and we're not looking for someone who isn't really going to love this.

Experience developing Android applications is obviously a must. You can be less than "expert", but please don't apply if you've never built a complete app from scratch - it's the first thing we'll want to see. You should be familiar with the entire process of building, testing and deploying an app to the store. Database experience is a big plus, as is understanding security of same.

This is a gig at our office in Encino, Ca. You need to be here at least some of the time - no telecommuting - but part time schedules are OK. Creative projects require your presence.

Please submit any websites, applications, Github repos or anything else you think we should look at. Need to fill this immediately, so lets get you in here to talk.

We have an immediate need for an iOS developer to pick up a project that was re-scoped by a client beyond our current resource capabilities. This is a simple brochure type app that lists job availability in Europe for an international hospitality brand that you would know. iPad version is done and ready to roll but client did not like the way it worked on iphone so have asked for a re-design and re-dev. We have the resources for the design part but not for the dev part.

Probably a 1 month engagement. We can talk about rate but we will pay fare market value for the U.S.

Please mefi-mail me.

Bring me pretzels from Philly to NYC! (Philadelphia, PA)

Are you traveling from Philadelphia to NYC anyway sometime in the next few months? If so, can you pick me up a box (50 or whatever they sell that's approximately that many) of real Philadelphia soft pretzels -- Federal, or Philadelphia Soft Pretzel Factory, or equivalent? Obviously, they need to be fresh -- as in, purchased the day they're brought. I can meet you at Penn Station or Port Authority or something (or you can drop them by my place in Prospect Heights, if you happen to be in the neighborhood).

Then I will stick them in my freezer and eat one every day. I will pay you for back for the cost of the pretzels, plus $30.

(Yes, I could probably order some over the Internet, but then they would arrive via next-day air and thus be less fresh)

Short Notice: One Day Job in St. Paul, MN (St. Paul, MN)

What the job entails: Go to JW Hulme’s Sample Sale at 10 am sharp, elbow frantic ladies out of the way, find and purchase a Mini Excursion Tote in “American Heritage Brown,” insure it, and mail it to us. We will reimburse you via PayPal and compensate you for your time.

The Details:

On Saturday, February 16, 2013, J.W. Hulme will be having their semi-annual Sample Sale. My wife has longed for a “Mini Excursion Tote” for quite some time, but we can only afford it if we get it on sale. J.W. Hulme has a Sample Sale every year, but you have to be at their store in person to take part in the sale – they do not take phone or Internet orders – because all sales are final (Thus it is really, really important that you get the exact bag in the correct color – you only get compensated if it’s the right bag and color!).

Mini Excursion Tote Bag (I have included a link to the bag and you can check out the different colors).

I called and the staff said they have no idea if there will be a Mini Excursion Tote offered for sale since it all depends on what items people have returned to the store, but I’m hoping that they have one, and that it’s the “American Heritage Brown” color. Even if they do not have this bag in this color and you leave empty-handed after searching for us, we will still compensate you for your time.

If you think you have the time and patience to go on this crazy quest, please MeFi Mail me so we can work out the details.

Store address and info.
Web Developer – Contract to Hire (ASP.NET MVC) (Beverly, MA)

Applications may be sent to labs@latd.com. Candidates who submit incomplete applications will not be considered.

Objective:

We’re looking for a creative, multi-talented web developer to help Latitude Labs (a Latitude company) with a variety of application development needs, leading up to and following the public launch of Lumière, our video evaluation and analytics platform for creative media professionals (film studios, television networks, advertising agencies, etc.). This is a phenomenal opportunity for anyone looking to make a demonstrable impact – both in terms of bringing a product to launch-readiness and contributing to future iterations post launch.

Hours & Location:

30-40 hours per week. We support remote/flex working arrangements, but expect a contractor to spend some time at our offices in Beverly, MA during the early phase of the contract to help establish a good working relationship with the Labs team and a deep understanding of the Lumière application.

Compensation:

Compensation will be contract-based, rather than hourly, and will be calibrated to 6 months of salaried employment. Target contract duration is 6 months, though there will be a review at 3 months to gauge mutual interest in continuing the contract. Subject to a review following successful completion of the contract, we may invite the contractor to stay on as a regular, full-time employee.

Job Duties:

- Work with other team members to design, develop and test new server-side tools, features and functionality for a proprietary SaaS web application
- Test coverage planning, creation and execution
- Assist with front-end development, to the extent that proficiency dictates
- Other project related tasks, as assigned
- Participate in regular check-ins and code reviews

Desired Background:

- Demonstrable proficiency with Microsoft web application technologies, including ASP.NET, MVC, C#, Entity Framework, Visual Studio
- Demonstrable proficiency with SQL Server or other relational database
- Working knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, Javascript a huge plus
- Familiarity with Amazon Web Services a plus
- Familiarity with HTML5 web video a plus
- Strong aesthetic sensibility a plus
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Knack for initiative, creative thinking and curiosity

Applicant Requirements:

Candidates will be required to submit a cover letter, resume, and a brief (~300 word max) response to the following: Describe a complex web development project that you have played a critical role in bringing to successful completion. What technologies did you use, and what was your specific role in/contribution to the project?

About Latitude:

Latitude provides custom research and consulting services to help the world’s foremost media and technology companies understand how the evolving online and mobile landscapes—and emerging user behaviors—translate into new business opportunities.

Latitude’s newest venture, Latitude Labs, prototypes, develops, and brings to market software products at the intersection of video and the web. Its first offering, Lumière, provides media creators—including television networks, film studios, and advertising agencies—an intuitive, self-service solution for generating rich qualitative and quantitative viewer insights around their video content. Marrying analytical sophistication with beautiful, user-friendly design, Lumière promises to dramatically increase the insights capabilities of client-side teams and help them produce better, more engaging, and more effective content.

Web designer capable of implementing in a Django environment (Sherbrooke, QC)

Over the past two years, a Django programmer and I have built a pretty great Web site that I think has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, neither of us have design skills to speak of.

The programmer has pulled back from the project due to health issues, and I'm left with a great idea, a butt-ugly site, and neither the skill to design a better version, or to implement that design in a Django environment. So I'm looking for 80% designer, 20% Django-savvy person.

I've got a great handle on what's needed, and a very detailed set of needs and parameters -- clarity won't be an issue. It would take a 10-minute Skype session to tour the site and show the designer what's needed, however -- many of the site elements that need work can only be seen/experienced through use.

I'm looking to gather a few quotes and then hire somebody in the next month or so. MeMail me, or mail me directly, and I can send you the detailed brief; if that looks good, we can set up the Skype tour.
buzzword list which may be of use:

Lead Engineer needed on Social Network for Drinkers (San Francisco, CA)

Shwinkers, the private social network for drinkers, is finalizing its native iOS app and needs a special shwinker to finish the job.

We need a killer developer to lead the team and bring this app to market. Our app uses the latest trends in geo-fencing, social networking and smart design with the goal of being the indispensable app for all social drinkers ... or Shwinkers (it's a global drinking club with a digital twist).

We are releasing the iOS application first and the ideal candidate is capable of building both the front-end and back end by themself. All the graphical assets are designed and the first version exists, but is incomplete.

Our lead shwink-developer will be hands on and passionate about making a beautiful and fast application that delivers a killer user experience. It is a technical founder position and compensation is equity.

The ideal candidate has:

-2+ years working with Ruby on Rails (ROR)

-Experience working with RESTful JSON APIs.

-Familiarity or desire to work with MongoDB (our backend uses this now and we want to keep it)

-Familiarity with objective C

-Existing Apps in the Apple AppStore.

It's a plus if you have:

-Android mobile development experience

For sure we prefer candidates right now that are stronger on the backend services (server, API and Mongo) than the front end client development - but we are open to talk to candidates that are looking to improve their backend skills as well.

If you're interested we can give you access to our GitHub repo and you can look for yourselves what we're building.

For more information please contact patrick@Shwinkers.com.

Thanks!

2-5 hours of statistics (multinomial logistic regressions using R) tutoring over Skype (or UK phone) (over Skype audio or UK telephone)

I am a sociolinguist working on a quantitative analysis of language preferences by MeFites for my PhD dissertation. I've been using Andy Field's book Discovering Statistics Using R, to learn about multinomial logistic regressions. I could use a few hours of statistics help (~2 hours initially and more over the next two weeks) in answering some very specific questions about my data and these statistical tests, as well as my interpretations of the results (or the errors I'm getting instead of results).

You would not be doing my work for me in any way...I cannot stress that enough! This is guidance towards understanding statistics better and a sanity check on how I'm proposing to go about (or have gone about) things. I have done a lot of reading on statistics and have made several attempts in logistic regressions -- I'm more than willing to do any additional work on my own, as I really want to understand this stuff! I'm at a bit of an impasse right now though, and could use to talk it through and listen to some fresh ideas, advice, etc.

I am advertising this on MetaFilter because you have all helped me in the past in so many ways, and a MeFite would be well familiar with MetaFilter which makes it easier to understand the project and focus on the stats. I can Paypal you £10 or £16 per hour, whichever you prefer. Experience with using the R environment is not absolutely necessary, but understanding of multinomial logistic regressions (and likelihood ratios, odds ratios, test diagnostics, etc.) is a must. Thanks!

Online Course Builder - Wordpress (Anywhere )

TriplePundit, a media platform for the conversation on sustainability in business, is seeking an experienced online course builder to create a platform for offering online courses to sustainability practitioners. Courses will include sustainability reporting, sustainable marketing, carbon markets and other courses TBD (but you don't need to have knowledge of these topics to be the successful candidate).

Platform should include space for:
- Self-directed study through PDF with weekly assignments
- Q&A forum with teachers and other students
- Live and recorded webinars and youtube videos (software TBD)
- PDF library
- Quiz or checklist functionality
- Secure entry and ability for students to save their place
- Payment system

This both a logistical and technical assignment that requires experience in developing online courses and technical proficiency – we need someone to help us figure out how the courses should flow from a pedagogy standpoint, and then how to implement that in a technically straightforward manner. We also need someone to help us weigh the costs and benefits of different course functionality in terms of ease-of-implementation. Our preference is to use wordpress in a creative way (such as this concept).

The successful candidate will:

- Converse with our prospective trainers to determine needed functionality
- Help build out course wireframe
- Propose and install technical infrastructure that can be re-used for future courses
- Potentially manage and budget for additional design work, if needed.

Requirements:
- Knowledge of wordpress capabilities and limits and experience building wordpress-based sites
- Experience building online courses using wordpress or other
- Familiarity with Problogger approach to online course modules and blog monetization techniques.
-Basic design competence
-PHP skills a plus

Compensation is flexible and based on experience.

To Apply: Please submit a bid to nick@triplepundit.com which includes hourly rate and proposed hours to complete project. Tell us why you are the person for the job and 1-2 things we should be thinking about (to show us how you can help us with this project).

Thanks for reading!
Stray Boots is hiring a front-end web developer at our urban games / mobile-guided exploration startup -- a modern-day coder who strikes the balance between Getting It Pixel-Perfect and Getting it Done. And if you're also a talented designer, even better!
There's even a full site redesign in the works in the foreseeable future. You'll be just the fourth member of our web team, and you'll have tons of say in how we build our website and the mobile web interface to our games.

Skills & Requirements
- HTML and CSS
- Concise, semantic, and maintainable markup and selectors
- Progressive enhancement
- Experience with CoffeeScript
- Experience with a client-side state management framework such as Backbone.js
- Experience with Comet/WebSockets/Reverse AJAX
- Not intimidated by Python

About Stray Boots - The Long Version
Stray Boots is reinventing city exploration with scavenger hunt-style games you play using your cell phone (think your own private "Amazing Race").

So far, we've generated over 60,000 paying customers and developed products in 16 cities in the US and UK, not to mention being featured in the NY Times, Washington Post, and Fast Company. Having graduated the Entrepreneurs Roundtable Accelerator program (ERA) and obtained Series A VC funding, we're now building out our tech team so we can grow more quickly.

Founded by three Ivy-Leaguers with a passion for travel, we think we strike a pretty good workplace balance between playful and focused, between weekly meetings and Beer Fridays. You'll be joining a close-knit, enthusiastic and hard-working team fully invested in our product, customers, and vision.

Compensation commensurate with skills and experience. To apply, send cover letter and front-end development portfolio (plus design portfolio if you have one) to careers@strayboots.com and tell us why you want to be a part of what we're doing.
