Hey Boston area Mefites - let's eat some dumplings!

Proposed location: Empire (or Emperor, depending on which side of the street you're on) Garden, an awesome dim sum restaurant in an old theater. The place is huge and has a surreal mix of stereotypical Chinese restaurant decor and the old Art Nouveau theater decor. Plus, did I mention, DUMPLINGS! Proposed Date: Sunday May 26, maybe 10 or 11 ish? The time is flexible so I will turn this into a confirmed event once people weigh in. I suppose if nobody can make it on the 26th we can discuss alternative dates.

hugandpint and I will be in Portland, Oregon, USA for a spell in June and are interested in putting together a meetup that involves karaoke on either 6/6, 6/7, 6/8, or 6/9. I could get all fancy and actually look up where a good spot to do this might be or I could just ask if anyone has any ideas as to where the best karaoke digs are.

I have found this Karaoke From Hell thing on Thurs 6/6, which is in the always/usually/sometimes interesting live-band-karaoke format, though I know nothing about the location or the band or anything at all in this wild wild world, really. Anywhere in Portland is likely okay with us. I was a resident of your fine city when I became a Mefite way back in 2002, so I'm comfortable with the place. We're staying in SE, though as it always ends up being let's just say the more (or less) centrally located, the better. We'll have wheels and an engine and steering wheel and stuff.

Performance: Portland's Funniest Person comedy show

Opening night of Portland's Funniest Person contest, with a lot of the strongest competitors -- the ones who already work at Helium as MCs or features, including Metafilter's own msalt, Gabe Dinger, and Shane Torres. This is a dozen comics doing 5-6 minutes sets of their best material. If you tell them you're a friend of Mark, you can get 2 for 1 tickets (2 for $10). If that's still a bit steep, memail msalt as he has a limited number of free tickets, first come first served.

I am pleased to report that after nearly a year of plotting, planning, panicking, pulsating, pirouetting, and just plain old freaking out, feistycakes and I will be moving to the 02568 zip code by early June. So come get drunk with us one last time at my old fave Ceol, Sat. May 25 from 5 to 9 pm or so. We'll probably migrate to the Brooklyn Inn once Ceol starts the karaoke. I'll be the dork in the Metafilter T-shirt. Get there early for prime backyard position!

Here we go again!

Every year, for my birthday, I like to celebrate all the remarkable people in my life. By watching them sing karaoke alongside some pretty laughably terrible music videos. I've rented a room with a private bar and a tiny stage, and all I need is you. Takes place at Karaoke one7 (on 17th St, natch, b/t 5th & 6th), 8pm–11pm, followed by bar-hopping/pub-crawling/drinks-meandering. 'Suggested donation' to help cover costs of our own private karaoke venue is $20, but nobody's turned away from a good time because they can't pay. I love you all! This should be a fun time. There may even be... balloons.

Proposed: DOGS OF METAFILTER

My dog would benefit from being in the company of other dogs, and I would benefit from being in the company of metafilter people who have dogs. Let's do a dog-up.

Truman and I like Montrose Dog Beach, but I am definitely open to other suggestions, particularly if those suggestions are for places that don't have a scary half-fence going down one side. I was thinking the weekend of June 1, but am also open to other suggestions. Thoughts?

Description: In an age of musical pluralism, it would seem that song contests should be an anachronism. And yet Idol, The Voice, and other similar franchises remain amongst the top-rated television programs internationally. On the twentieth anniversary of the EU, one might think that European nationalism had died down a bit. But, you know, what's twenty years compared to hundreds of years of history? Meetup: Let's Watch Doctor Who's Series 7 Finale: The Name Of The Doctor!

Doctor Who's Series 7 Finale airs this Saturday, at 8pm. And we're pleased as punch to be able to watch it the Jersey City residence of oh yeah!, dedicated mefite and whovian. Folks can start coming over around 5 just to hang out, maybe watch some classic Doctor Who or whatever folks suggest - the episode starts at 8pm, so aim to arrive around 7:30 for that if possible.

IMPORTANT: The address given in the map (1 Journal Square Plaza, Jersey City, NJ 07306) is that of the nearest Path station - oh yeah! will give more walking directions in the thread. Feel free to bring whatever beer or food strikes your fancy, but it's not required. Look forward to seeing you there!

Meetup: Portland Oregon - A Canadian Abroad II

Hi Portland! I will be visiting your lovely city June 2-4, and I had a lot of fun meeting some of you the last time.

My schedule isn't quite as forgiving this time around - it's a Sunday-Tuesday trip, and I leave Tuesday evening, so I really only have the Sunday and the Monday. Of the two, I have the most flexibility on Sunday; my plane lands at about 1:30, and I figure I should be checked in and looking for something to do by about 3ish. I am under orders from my wife to bring her back a Voodoo Donuts hoody ("the magic is in the hole"), but past that, I'm pretty open. At least until the conference starts on Monday. I'll be staying downtown, at the Hilton. Would prefer to meet somewhere I can either walk or easily get to via transit. Is dinner with some of you a possibility? Or even a casual beer or two?
