Care to Give?

Last weekend, mi esposo chanced upon the movie called the “Caregiver”. Yes, it was my HUSBAND who chose to watch a local-drama-film-starring-d-megastar-Sharon-Cuneta-in-Cinema-One. I have to give emphasis on that, because you know, IT’S THE FIRST TIME! He is not fond of local movies, what more a drama for that. I bet he doesn’t even know that Cinema One exist on cable, until that day. The kids and I fought for our right for better TV programming aka nick, nick, nick, ninick, nick, nick, Nickelodeon! (did you sing it? Boo, you’re too old for it I guess.lol), since ~~he pleaded~~ he’s the head of the family, we let him. Just this one, okay? While he was watching, I was left with no choice but to watch too, I thought I can bear with this, anyway John Estrada was there too. So there, we both saw the movie for the first time (I know, we’re so Jurassic in that aspect). The movie was good, actually. It relates to my own experience having family members working abroad. But since the movie revolves around the medical field (it was “Caregiver”, after all), it was my ex-colleague, Lynnie, whom I remembered the most.

Lynnie, previously worked for the government agency, where I am still employed at. She was a vigorous Nursing graduate. Since she needed to support her family, she didn’t care less if she was employed as an office staff, even though, it was out of her league. While working, she managed to find time to review for the boards, which she eventually nailed. Now she’s a practicing nurse in New Zealand. She did not have an easy start, but she possessed the same wit, charm and determination to succeed, as how Tita Shawee portrayed it in that film.

As of the latest, Lynnie, together with other Filipino Registered Nurses based in New Zealand, has established a foundation with charitable purpose. She holds the position of no less than the Founder and Chairman of the Caring for Humanity International. It is the reputedly first Filipino-led International Foundation, based in New Zealand, organized to extend assistance to communities across the country and overseas that have been badly devastated by natural calamities or have been exposed to violence. Whoa, I couldn’t be prouder. We, Filipinos should be proud of this.

Presently, the Foundation is raising fund for the 4,000 displaced families in the 2 coastal towns in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines, which were affected by a widespread fire.

Isn't it touching to know someone across the globe still cared for fellow citizen here. I’m sure it touched your heart and would want to give a little love. You can do so by checking this website.

The movie ended on a happy note, with Tita Shawee finally reunited with her son in London. I hope Lynnie's advocacy never ends.

I Need to be Back!

Oh well, I lose. I put myself in this self-proclaimed blog protest as 2014 kicked in. I just thought, if I don’t get any paid post then I’d better not blog at all. I entered blogging to earn, right? So I deliberately did not blog to make a stand, clearly nobody cared so I’m blogging back. lol But what’s really funny was the fact that what made me come back was the same blogger who inspired me to create 1. As strange as it may sound, but it took me 3 years to finally visit her site again. I stopped reading blogs (aside from those that's in my blogger friends list) from the time I made my own, I’m weird like that, or was it narcism? Anyhow, I’m glad I did because at least I finally admitted to myself that I enjoyed blogging, paid or otherwise, especially because I know for a fact that I have a fan (take note that the noun used was in singular form).

Yesterday I received a quick call from mi esposo, he just asked me what my blog’s name was. Shocked, I tentatively answered (translated)

Me: “Ha? But I do not have new post since December”
Him: “Oh, is that so? Ummm, it’s just that I cannot see your blog’s URL in my favorites, I just wanted to add it back”.

So.. Apparently, my 1 and only, loyal, avid, and die hard fan don’t even know my blog’s URL, worst not really sure if he read my latest post. My, oh my!

The Star This Season

Our 3-day weekend brought all the sweat, stiff muscles and aching back, arms and neck out of the esposo and me. I think it was the busiest holiday in our lives so far, to think that what made us busy was not even holiday related. I actually cannot think of how to squeeze-in Christmas shopping at 1st but I thankfully did (only for inaanaks though). It was too tiring but at the same time fulfilling.

This year we thought that instead of buying ornaments for Christmas like we initially planned, we opted to divert the money for a long-term use, like paint. We painted the house’s fence and façade. It took us 4 half days to finally finish it, squeezing-in household chores in between. So bad I forgot to take a picture of our hard work.

Aside from the painting job, I was able to de-clutter the playroom too. I needed to do that to fit-in the anticipated new batch of toys. The old toys will be donated to Jollibee MaAga Ang Pasko drive, I already talked to Uno about this and she didn’t even argue. Good girl she really is.

Since we didn't buy new ornaments and lights, it was not really far from how it looked before.

But I love every few small details it had. I loved the idea of groupings, next year I think I'll use this concept again (if ever we think of investing on ornaments).

DIY Minnie and Mickey Mouse Costumes

My kids were invited to a Minnie and Mickey Mouse Themed Party. What was exciting about this was they were asked to come-in as the cutest mouse themselves. It’s my kids 1st costume party, but I don’t want to overdo it. Though, I am not a crafter (especially with dresses), I braved in making their costumes. I didn’t want them to wear store bought costumes because chances are, they will look like any other. Also, knowing how Filipinos responds to dress codes, more chances that only handful kids will come in costume, which in-turn makes them the outcasts. Lastly, I don’t want to buy (period). Hehe Here’s what I did.

For Uno’s Minnie Mouse Costume, I recycled her Lady Bug costume.

She could have worn it as is only if it was in her size but it wasn’t so I made a big adjustment. I removed all the unrelated nick-knacks, 1st. Since I am not a sewer, I only ripped one side of the dress, that will save me from some sewing job.

This was my peg by the way. So only these parts remained from the original dress.

Then I got her measurements. As they say, measure twice, cut once.

Getting her out of her playtime to get her measurements was not that easy. I needed to make her feel that we were just playing, so I had to have my turn.hehe (excuse my running outfit)

After cutting the dress to my desired design, I put pin around the edges and passed it to the sewing department aka her nanny. Here's the finished product.

That's not all. A Minnie Mouse costume wouldn't be complete without headband and shoes. I customized those too.

For the headband, I opted not to include the ears. I thought it's more cute and girly to only use the trademark ribbon. I used the fabric (polka dots and black) I removed from the original dress plus other materials like, used folder (to give body), plain headband and needle and thread.

The headband I used was not black, so I (yes, me) sewed black fabric to cover it. Then I asked esposo to draw a ribbon for me. This doubled as fabric guide and a ribbon filler as well. Then I sewed the 3 sides (reverse side of the fabric) then reversed the fabric and inserted the filler before sewing the last side. Noticed the excess part from the drawing? I used that to attached the ribbon to the headband.

For the shoes, I just put a ribbon using the scrap polkadot fabric on her red shoes.

This was Uno's Minnie Mouse ensemble.

For Dos' costume, this was my inspiration.

But since Manila can be so humid, I decided to let him wear a sando. My original plan was to dye his white sando black and dye his white shorts red. But it was too hard to find dye, it was my mama who finally bought it for me 2 days prior the party. I asked her to buy 1 pack of each color. Then I instructed the nanny to soak each piece of clothe overnight. The next day (a day before the party), the clothes looked like this:

Yes, epic fail. And since there was no more time to mend it, I just looked around the kid's closets for alternatives. I saw this red leggings in Uno's closet and found it perfect (although there is a lace at the edge.lol). I sewed 2 big buttons ( got it from my dress) on it.

Since either kids don't own a black shirt, I settled for this dark blue shirt. I also put on his black long socks to act as pant.

Then for his mickey ears, I also used the materials from the ears above. I covered the headband just the same but now I patterned 2 circles and made a connection. This will make attachment to the headband easier. And in this way, I can also easily tacked all the mess away.

Like this. I was able to attached the fabric to the pattern by simply using glue.

Tadaah!

Though I'd like to make an effort for his shoes too, the esposo already warned me. He said he had tolerated too much girly stuff on Dos already, don't push to the limit. Okay, so Jordan Shoes alright. This was his costume all together.

They didn't bagged the best in costume award, I wasn't really expecting. But I was really proud of how my efforts paid. What made me more fulfilled was the acceptance of my kids, they were really happy with it. They especially loved their ears. They wore it everywhere.

Why Did You Close Your Eyes So Soon?

Today is my Papa’s 5th birthday in heaven. The memory of what came about was still fresh to me like it was just yesterday. He was scheduled to be released from a 5 day hospital confinement that same day. We all believed he was already relieved from Pulmonary Edema (water in the lungs) triggered by Kidney Disorder secondary to his Diabetes. I was with him the day before and I knew he was already okay. We were even teasing the charged doctor not to discharge him yet because he was enjoying the free airconditioning in his room. Nobody saw that he was not going home to us. That God had prepared a better home for him. We were saddened by his untimely demise. But we have to accept His decision and his acceptance (although I still carry the question above in my mind).

There was also a rather interesting story that time. As mama was sent out of the room while papa was being revived, she heard tell-tales at the nurses’ station. Apparently, 1 nurse saw a smoky figure with 2 other figures in white, ascending. Mama was of course in denial, for she still hopes papa would be revived. True enough, it was papa. He decided to go with them. That story became our weapon in accepting the fate. At least we know for a fact that it was God’s angels who fetched him.

Today, timely with his anniversary, esposo and I were privileged to lead the candle offering during our office’s thanksgiving/Christmas mass. I took the chance to whisper my prayer for him in mine.

End VAW Now, It's Our Duty

I was 1 of the many privileged employees who were sent to attend the Knowledge Sharing Exercise (KSE) spearheaded by the Human Rights Commission. Today’s KSE made an in-depth discussion about Republic Act No. 9262 or commonly known as The Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children (VAWC) Act of 2004. VAWC Law aims to stop violence against woman and/or her children (biological or otherwise) by her past or present intimate partner. Intimate partner may mean anybody whom a woman had or has sexual relationship with, like:

· husband (or ex)

· live-in partner (or ex)

· boyfriend/girlfriend (or ex)

· dating partner (or ex).

This law classifies VAWC as a public crime. It also aims to promote awareness amongst people to act and do something to stop such violence. Our guest speaker, Atty. Claire P. Lucson, from Womanlead Foundation was very knowledgeable (and inspiring at the same time) about the topic. She clearly discussed the acts of violence, remedies, penalties, and what every abused woman can do to protect herself and her child. Such acts of violence can include but not limited to:

· Physical violence – bodily or physical harm

· Sexual violence – act sexual in nature committed against woman or her child (rape, sexual harassment, forcing the wife and mistress to live in conjugal home, prostitution, et al.)

· Psychological violence – acts or omission causing or likely to cause mental or emotional suffering (intimidation, damage to property, stalking, marital infidelity, et al.)

· Economic abuse – acts that make or attempt to make a woman financially dependent (withdrawal of financial support, destroying household property, controlling victim’s own money, et al)

I found this Law very beautifully crafted and detailed to the tiniest detail. This was possible because the victims themselves were the one who drafted this. What I love more about this Law is that it gives everybody the right to stop the violence. No more “away mag-asawa lang yan” mentality, anybody can end VAW because it now our duty.

Marriage for Keeps (and for Cheaps)

We got those at P45 each from Handyman, Robinson’s Sto.Niño (or whatever branch name they carry, all I know is that, it’s within our village). I think it was my 1st time to visit Handyman (or at least that branch) and I was struck with the awesome finds there. Most of the items were sold in cheap prices. Some were with buy 1, take 1 tags, while most were at a discounted price. Like those solar lamps I spotted which was marked down at 70%. 45 pesos for a solar lamp, pinagiisipan pa ba yon?

Apparently, mi esposo did. He hesitated in buying it. Actually he refused to buy it at all. He was saying something like, "not now"; "the materials don't look sturdy"; "maybe next time"; blah, blah, blah. Maybe he had a point. Maybe it was not really durable. Maybe it was not really the familia’s priority at that instance. But for cheapskate’s sake it was just P45, my golly! Out of frustration I uttered, “ang hirap magpaganda ng bahay pag ganyan kasama mo, maghahanap nalang ako ng ibang kasama”. Really, I meant that. #P45WorthOfMarriageLangAngPeg hehehe I walked out and went to Saizen.

I am not really shopaholic, I only buy things for myself when the needs arise. But of course, I am only a woman, vulnerable and weak (when it comes to good finds). And that’s where he comes in. I really appreciate how he keeps me sane when I’m being impulsive. I listen to him, I really do (except for those times that I become nurture-ally deaf. I don’t know but the infant section is deafening). I think that is what they mean by “opposite attracts”, by the term “complement each other”. That is how marriage works. One must fill where’s the other one is lacking.

Like in this story. He followed me with 5 pieces of solar lamps bought at Handyman. That’s what I’m talking about. #MarriageSaved! #GandaPaNgPatio hahaha

Fun Transformation

The past weekend was fun filled for the familia. We partied for 2 straight days, and it was just awesome.

Saturday, was Cassy’s (my OB’s daughter) 1st birthday. It was a Minnie/Mickey Mouse Themed party and the kids were asked to come in costume. It was my kiddos’ 1st costume party and it filled me with excitement. My kiddos’ costume was home made – from head to toe and I am so satisfied of how it turned out (it was a weeklong preparation after all.hehe). Cassy’s parents made sure to throw a big party for her (one lucky child). Everything was extravagant, from the food to prizes to souvenir. The guests had so much fun, kids especially.

Sunday was a construction themed party for Brylle’s (my highshool friend’s son) 1st birthday. It was a straight forward but carefully thought of party. Brylle’s mom took care of the physical arrangement and I super admire her for putting everything in coordination. The entire program was even on theme, it was like a science/construction trivia show of some sorts.

What made this back-to-back party more memorable to us (me and the esposo) was that the revelation our kiddos made. Were so happy of how they acted during the 2 parties. Dos was relatively behaved kid. He did not give us any problem in handling him. He cheerfully played with the adults (he stayed in the adult’s table most of the time) and he entertained their wish to carry him (unlike his Ate during her age).

No, he's not gonna cry, just behaving.

While Uno was very interactive, she actively participated in the games and program. She even raises her hand and volunteer when the host asked for one. It was a breather to see that she’s coming out of her shell now.

More Party DIYs

Since I don't have detailed photo of these, I decided to put them all together in 1 post. This is to round up Dos Party DIYs.

Name tags:

Since he had a basketball theme, it would be fitting to use a finger foam as name tag. So, I printed a downloadable copy (sorry I didn't take note of the link. You can always ask me of the softcopy by leaving a message anyway) of a finger foam on a board paper and cut it. I wanted to make it wearable so I made mirror copy via Paint. The problem arose when I tried to put them together, they were not in the same size, of course. So I adjusted the back part manually, printed and reprinted until they are in the same size (I think it would be easier using photoshop). I just glued them together and let dry. When it was dried up, I run around it a stripe of japanese paper (I used different color for the different sides). Then made cuts on the japanese paper to give a pompom effect.

The front was were we put the name of the kid, the back were all printed Eon #1. I'm glad the kids loved it, they wore it the entire party.

Table Centerpiece:

We used a junior size ball to double as a table centerpiece and a balloon burst prize. The party planner suggested to use a cold glue gun to attached the ball to the table runner. But I thought of making a ball stand. As usual, I used Paint to layout the stand. I printed it on the paper board too. I simply attached both ends to make a circle where I can put the ball with. Then I used a wide scoth tape over the stand to give a shinny finish.

The problem was, everybody wanted to bring home the ball. The early birds got them right away leaving the table empty looking. But since it was part of the prize the party host was quick to confiscate them and put it on the prize table. Still, it left the table empty looking, I shoud have listened and used cold glue instead.

Menu Cards:

Just for OC's sake, I printed menu card to totally match the theme. I used a coaching board as background to every dish name. As usual this was courtesy of Microsoft Paint.

As I have said, I was just being OC-OC because the caterer also prepared theirs (not in theme though). Of course they gave way to me, but was kind enough to lend their menu card holder.

So that's about it. I hope someone finds my DIY posts useful in their future parties. Happy prep pips!

DIY Party Signage

The venue for Dos’ party was a little hard to pinpoint. That’s why I thought of making a lot of signage outside the venue. It would be a hassle-free if I rented a styro-backdrop for the stage but I also DIYed it so I had to use my power again and the materials around me (or the esposo would cut me into pieces if I buy new set) to produce one.

Materials:

Styro ball, paint, board (I used a side of a box), balloon stick, crepe paper, cut-out letters (message), curling ribbon, nylon, masking tape, scissor, knife.

Procedure:

I divided the styroball into half using a kitchen knife (it's easier considering it has a longer handle).

The ball was intended as a base, so I shaved the center to make it more stable.

I asked the esposo to make it look like a ball (or the half of it), so he painted it in theme colors.

For the main signage, I covered the board with crepe paper (also using the theme colors). I wanted the back of the board to be fully covered.

Then I tricked it by layering another color and arranged the message on top. This was my 1st product, I made a mistake of using a glue. As you can remember back from your art class that liquid breaks the color of the crepe paper (which I unfortunately forgot). So there, epic fail. I wanted to make another one but the ink of our printer run out. I was just fortunate my guest let pass my failure.

So for the next signage, I know better by using a roled masking tape. (It would be easier have I used double sided tape, but luck was really not on my side, we run out of roll too).

But the outcome was neater unlike the 1st.

I made a total of 4 signage. I regret I was not able to take a picture of the 4th, which happened to be my favorite because I added a silhouette of Dos' there. It say "The Game Is Here" which I placed on the veranda of the venue.

I initially though of using half ball per signage, but since I used heavy board, I needed to use 2-halves to make it stand.

So I just hung the rest.

I also made a scoreboard for the buffet table, but this time, I realied solely on my handwritting and some paint.

Mess Up Project Update

I started my little brilliant project of wrecking the house last Saturday. I never realized it was this difficult. The mere trying-to-figure-out-how-to-make-my-ideas-come-to-life was exhausting on its own. I was there, looking blankly at the furniture and the only solution I can think of was to throw everything.hehe Someone must invent a superlative term for the word “fully-furnished” (or should I educate the MIL about being minimalist). Anyway, I decided I cannot make the tweaking until after Christmas, I must give way and allot space for the tree for the season.

So there, the tree is set. It’s only a temporary set-up though. The family will still have to dress it up more. I just started it so the little girl would be preoccupied during the Pacquiao fight and give her tatay an uninterrupted watching time (but not actually, he had the little boy.hihi)

Going back to the project, I am proud to present mi esposo’s contribution (lagot ka sa mommy mo). I requested him to adjust the curtain rod to emphasize the window. My research (see, my wrecking project is based on facts) showed that we must give enough allowance between the curtain and the window. This will allow more light and air to come inside the house. This will also make an illusion of a framed window, thus will define your windows more.

See the difference? The book says, it must be that (right rod) high and wide. I'm excited already.

There, it’s adjusted (the left side was adjusted too, of course). All I have to do is to sew the fabric for the curtain. Actually, I will only cut the fabric (I never am a good sewer). I wanted to pass the sewing part to my SIL but I am not sure if she will be able to return it to me at least before the year ends, so I think I have to rely on the nannies. I will ask them to hand sew it for me.

I hope we’ll be able to put everything together before my PIL comes back from the US (or they’ll notice the curtain rod mess up, palo kami!).

DIY Stage Backdrop

Did it come to you that you’re in a budget but was trying very hard not to show it? That’s our situation during Dos’ birthday party. And 1 of the big/small (BIG, being it’s where the guests look at, almost the entire duration of the party and SMALL being it’s only their peripheral vision who’s actually in use) detail that esposo and I took and actually fought about was the stage backdrop. 1. Renting a whole styro-backdrop was way out of the budget and too impractical (it ranges from P6-8K, plus looks a little messy in our opinion) 2. The tradition tarpaulin backdrop was too plain for P3k (5x3 customized tarpaulin with 2 balloon pillars), I thought. What I wanted to come up with was a backdrop that 1. Reusable; 2. Refreshing; 3. Unique; and 4. Cheap but not obvious.

During the process of planning, I was challenged by the esposo: “I’m sure the cost for that DIY would be as much as Kim’s (party planner) quotation, just give it to her, no hassle”. Good thing I thought of that before him, I already did the math and was able to convince him (or was it my tears that convinced him). Hehe

My initial idea was just to use a fabric as backdrop and simply cut-out Dos’ name on a styro but since the esposo made this official logo (I asked him to make this for the invitation but wasn’t able to incorporate it in the final layout), I decided to use the design for the stage instead.

Now, for the tutorial.

We bought this Styrofoam at Divisoria for P35/piece we bought 2 pieces for the name and the ball. But later found out that it was only enough for the ball so we bought 1 piece at Pandayan Bookshop for P45 #SayangDinAngSampungPisoAh.

For the ball, esposo improvised a huge compass using 2 ballpens and a ribbon. He tied the end of the ribbon to the end of the pens (we wanted a 3’ high ball and there were no circle in that height around the house), it was so smart of him I tell you.

He cut the ball using a kitchen knife. It was easier to hold and to cut and produced only a little styrosnow.

He simply traced the finished product for the other half of the ball.

The letter cut out was really a challenge because no one in the family can make good letterings. We tapped an architect friend but due to schedule differences, I opted to try it myself instead. I relied on pure math and not skill and used trial and error method. We still used Bodoni MT Black Font (same as LA Laker’s Jersey Font) to be consistent with the rest of the printables. I’m glad that Dos' name were only 3 letters and easy ones at that. I was able to finish the letterings but waited for esposo’s approval before cutting it.

The next day, esposo volunteered to cut it but found my letters messy and difficult to trace so he made his version at the back of the same styro. He’s such a credit stealer and I love him for that.hehe

He again, used a knife to cut it and was careful enough to use a ruler to guide him.

He also layed-out and cut number 1 using the scraped foam. After cutting everything, he painted it using a water-based paint. Apparently, all water-based paints are compatible with styrofoam. He used latex water based paint specifically.

He double coated every sides of everything.

The fabric was brought at Divisoria too. The yellow one was at P35/yard (we got all 3yards for P100) and purple for P20/yard (we got 2yards for P15/each, tapat na po). We only planned to use the yellow fabric but bought the purple anyway (in case). We asked my SIL to sew the ends with a specific instruction of making a room for a rod. But after finalizing the invitation, I thought of asking her to the attached purple fabric at each side as similar to the invitation design. She ended up using only half of the yellow fabric.

* Invitation also DIY using Microsoft Paint. At the left was the draft and at the right was the final invitation. We eventually decided for a joint celebration but focused on the little boy more.

For the balloon pillar, we also bought two colors each of 5’ and 260s balloons at Divisioria (I forgot the retail price, but I’m sure it was less than P500 for all). I burnt my eyebrows in learning how to DIY the balloon pillar but Kim was really very kind to help out, actually her staffs totally did it for me. And apparently, you will also need 11’ balloon in making a pillar (sorry, just a very trying hard fella here), but look they were able to pull it off nicely by adding their own balloons. I couldn't thank them enough.

The esposo attached the styrofoam cut-outs together by using toothpick. He then attached the foam to the fabric with the use of straight pin. We bought 3 mat pins at SM at P12/mat (I'm sure it's cheaper outside the mall) but only used about half of the 1st mat.

This was how the stage backdrop looked when pulled together. I love how the light radiates during daytime.

And still as vibrant at night.

My original budget was only P800 (the cost of a 5x3' tarpaulin print-out). See, it was a little over my estimated budget but it was way too gorgeous against the P3,000 traditional, simple and boring tarpaulin backdrop. #BaonNaBaon And just to share my response to esposo’s challenge during our argument: “Yes, the cost might be the same, but with that amount, all the other small details will be covered”. Which was very true, the extra balloons were used as cake arch and entrance decor. The paint was used in the signage. And the fabric is currently in the process of curtain conversion.

PROJECT: Home Improvement - ON

Mi familia currently lives in a house owned by my in-laws. After we got married, my PIL was so kind to offer their house for us to live-in while we are still searching for a house of our own. Since, they’ll also be transferring to QC that time, it would be perfect to leave their house with their son. I initially opposed to that plan. I suggested we rent a place instead because I thought I can move freely when I’m at my own house but later on agreed for practical reason. We were blessed to acquire house and lot during our first few months together, but since it needed a lot of renovation, we decided to sell it after a year. We used the proceeds to buy a residential lot in a prime village within the area. Then we planned the construction, we actually had the design and was finalizing some details when we got pregnant. You know the superstition, so no house construction took place. When I gave birth, we were forced to transfer to my mama’s so she could look after Uno. We technically maintained 2 houses, no need to add another just yet. When we thought Uno can be trusted to a yaya and we can start our little house construction project, we got pregnant again.

My in-laws house was in perfect fit when I came in, fully furnished and all. Although it was not actually in my taste and style, I didn’t dare touch anything (see that’s why I wanted to rent). We always thought the set-up was only temporary. But come to think of it, we’ve been living there for more than 5 years now. I think everybody needs to accept the fact that 5 years isn’t temporary.

So now, I’m starting my little project which I’m calling “Mom, I mess up your house”. It's a home make-over project of some sort which I think will turn the house far from how it used to be. I’ll incorporate my own style, add more color and pattern that will depict the age of the present dwellers. Shhh, don’t tell her I said the last part.hihi

I’ll focus on the living area 1st and I’m setting a budget of P5,000 (which is still not available). Let’s see where it would take me. But as I have said, the house is fully furnished, so I just have to squeeze my creative juices ala Martha Stewart and improve whatever is already there (which I think would really mess up everything.hehe). I hope my MIL would still trust me with her house after this. Nyay!

My phone's wifi button has been disabled for unknown reasons. I blame it to the software update, mi esposo could not do anything but to concur with me. That made me so disconnected to the social media world but thanks to my "IT Expert" lover he was able to make "ways" for me. *evil grin*

As I logged on my FB account, I saw he liked an article which surprised me. I'm glad he's reading parenting articles now (I thought he's only interested in dog breeds and/or bikes. He's becoming human, hooray!). Although the title says ...For Dads and Daughters, I read it and it touched my heart and made me cry, oh, the crying thing must be the effect of the full moon.hehe Nevertheless, this article is worth sharing. So here, enjoy and I'm sure even Moms can do these to their children.

PS: Honey, don't worry, you've done most of these (#1 special mention. ahihi). J

1. Love her mom. Treat her mother with respect, honor, and a big heaping spoonful of public displays of affection. When she grows up, the odds are good she’ll fall in love with and marry someone who treats her much like you treated her mother. Good or bad, that’s just the way it is. I’d prefer good.

2. Always be there. Quality time doesn’t happen without quantity time. Hang out together for no other reason than just to be in each other’s presence. Be genuinely interested in the things that interest her. She needs her dad to be involved in her life at every stage. Don’t just sit idly by while she add years to her… add life to her years.

3. Save the day. She’ll grow up looking for a hero. It might as well be you. She’ll need you to come through for her over and over again throughout her life. Rise to the occasion. Red cape and blue tights optional.

4. Savor every moment you have together. Today she’s crawling around the house in diapers, tomorrow you’re handing her the keys to the car, and before you know it, you’re walking her down the aisle. Some day soon, hanging out with her old man won’t be the bees knees anymore. Life happens pretty fast. You better cherish it while you can.

5. Pray for her. Regularly. Passionately. Continually.

6. Buy her a glove and teach her to throw a baseball. Make her proud to throw like a girl… a girl with a wicked slider.

7. She will fight with her mother. Choose sides wisely.

8. Go ahead. Buy her those pearls.

9. Of course you look silly playing peek-a-boo. You should play anyway.

10. Enjoy the wonder of bath time.

11. There will come a day when she asks for a puppy. Don’t over think it. At least one time in her life, just say, “Yes.”

12. It’s never too early to start teaching her about money. She will still probably suck you dry as a teenager… and on her wedding day.

13. Make pancakes in the shape of her age for breakfast on her birthday. In a pinch, donuts with pink sprinkles and a candle will suffice.

Uno's Hello Kitty Party

Exactly 7 days after Dos’ birthday was Uno’s 3rd birthday. I wrote before that I planned to give her something special, it’s her special day after all. It was my belief that the 3rd birthday is the 1st birthday counterpart for the kids themselves. It is when they’re 3 that they can really appreciate and can be fully aware of what is happening around them. I was really thinking of throwing a big party for her 3rd birthday, but since Dos was also turning 1 (7 days before her) I decided to give the big celebration to him.

Though I only prepared simple foods, she might not have too many guests, she didn’t have party program (opening of gifts was our only activity that afternoon aside from eating). But that doesn’t mean her birthday would to be plain and colourless. The little sweat I shed was more than enough for her to be extra happy and giggly excited.

Here I prepared a simple balloon ceiling décor. I alternately arranged the balloons in a nylon string by using masking tape. I added curling ribbon at the end of each balloon to give a little life. I also alternately attached the spare cupcake toppers I printed to the ribbons to accentuate the theme.

I hung the excess balloons on the wall and attached more toppers. I also hung some hello kitty stuffs (her bags actually).

For the buffet table backdrop, I simply reused the fabric used at Dos’ party and recycled our pink curtain. I tacked only the ends, got the center tacked it and tacked the center between them, to create a fake pleat. I also printed and cut-out each letter of her name which I designed with hello kitty characters, I glued it then over purple bond paper for some 3D effect. The esposo was also kind enough to cut number 3 on a styrofoam (also from Dos’ party). I attached the hello kitty ribbon on it. (All printable were DIYed using Microsoft Paint. Jologs lang ang peg.hehe)

For the buffet table, I also used the pink curtains (it matches the motif, what can I do?) as table cloth and since the purple fabric was too long, I overlapped it on the table (it doubled as placemat too, to make sure the pink curtain won’t get stain). I covered a shoe box to elevate the cake tower. Layering is a good effect, you know. I also used her hello kitty stuff toy and this printable hello kitty bag which I stocked with more cupcake toppers.

The decoration was a little overboard (mi esposo didn’t escape to inform me that, every-so-often), considering we only had spaghetti and around 15 guests. I admit I thought of that too, I even cancelled my plan to make a balloon pillar. But who cares? You should see what this little effort has done to my little girl. She was beyond happy.

Dos' 1st Birthday Party

When I was preparing for Dos’1st birthday party, the internet was very useful to me. All the possible suppliers, from venues to caterers where sourced from the web. I also relied on various reviews and feedbacks of various clients before me. So I thought it is but right to share my own experience for soon to be clients. I don’t want to call this suppliers rating though, but just my two cents.

VENUE: Brgy. West Triangle Multipurpose Hall, West Triangle, Quezon City

It is at the 2nd floor of the barangay hall. Parking was a problem. Locating the main hall was a problem because there were no signage’s leading the hall and all the barangay mobiles/fire trucks, and during that time, a food stall was blocking the entrance. But other than that, there was nothing more to complain about it. It was well lighted, spacious and easy to dress. The barangay people are easy to talk with, they were very accommodating specially with my requests. I was assured by the person in-charged that it’s going to be cool come party time but I thought otherwise. I cannot fully complain though because the staff pointed out that we brought a freezer inside (ice cream maker actually, which was worst. I think.hehe), he said he had to regulate the energy use in order to have a stable electricity flow.

VENUE DRESS-UP:

Ceiling Décor – Let’s Paint ‘d Town Red Party (LPDTR) Balloon Décor and Party Services. No sweat dealing with these people. Kim was already our suki, she provides only with high calibre decorations.

Stage pillars, cake ark and all other balloon decorations – LPDTR staffs. Though I dreamt of DYIng those, they were too epal to get the balloons from me and set it up themselves, and I loved them for doing so.

FOOD:

Adult Food – Verleo Catering. It is safe to say that the food was enjoyed by everyone. The food was sumptuous and was generous. Verleo people were very accommodating from the account executive that planned with me down to the wait staffs. The only setback was that I thought (and the head waiter acknowledges) that the rectangular tables I requested was too small for 8 people. They also brought a table top type of table linen instead of the table runner I requested. So they re-ordered those from their head office and came a little late. There were already some guests and yet they were still finalizing their set up.

Kiddie Food – Jollibee chicken spaghetti, juice from grocery and mini cupcakes courtesy of Cookcakes.

Dessert table – through the generosity of Kim from LPDTR. I initially planned to make it as additional table centrepiece, so we just bought candies from All About Baking, crackers from a local supplier and popcorn from Chef Tony’s. But Kim of LPDTR told us that she’s gifting the family with additional goodies for the dessert table and would lend us her glassware and a staff dedicated to replenish the goodies. How can I complain, so I made the decors in rush.

Food carts (contracted thru Kim of LPDTR)

Champola Blast – so yummy and uniquely presented. You have to double check the electric current of your venue though for their ice cream maker. I heard from Kim that at 1 event she hosted, the current fluctuated every time they produce ice cream. In my case, lesser airconditioner was turned on.

Waffle Dog – it was sold out. I can equate that to being good.

Birthday Cake – Cookcakes by Liz. I submitted a prototype design and Liz, the baker, made a rather good rendition. The cake was soft and moist and the fondant was just as good.

HOST/ENTERTAINER: (Contracted thru Kim of LPDTR)

Glenn the Yoyo Master – party hosting (English speaking), game facilitating and yoyo show plus sound system. He’s so energetic and funny. It was also a plus that he came in-theme and he boast that it was brand new. He said, he asked his staff to buy him Laker’s jersey upon seeing the venue (apparently, he was wearing a Bull’s jersey beforehand.lol). He performed superb yoyo tricks that were so, ummm, inspiring. Just look at this little kid.hehe

Master Dem the Magician – magic show. It was a surprise from my SIL. Apparently, she contacted Kim and asked what she can contribute for the party and there he was. Although I like his magic skills, fast and accurate, I just don’t think its kid friendly. He used a lot of knifes and swords tricks which I don’t really like the kids to see. My heart still belongs to Wizzo (sorry I have to say that).

Minion Mascot – ah, well, to be the mascot. He was originally scheduled for 2 appearances but since Uno was really terrified, I cancelled its second appearance. He was a hit with the bigger kids and the biggest kids though he didn’t do anything but to stand in front of everybody.

OTHER PARTY DETAILS:

Party wear – made-to-order jersey from the local jersey maker. The esposo designed it, patterning from the Laker’s jersey.

Give-aways – customised stools from Wooden Kiddie Stool. I submitted the design and pay the down payment and did not hear anything from Jennifer, the proprietor. No confirmation, no whatever. I think it was kind of rude to treat clients like that. And came the pick-up date, she miraculously replied asking me for my preferred pick-up date. As in, hello? You made the job order right? The stool was good though and everybody liked it, even the adults were asking for a piece.

Cough Cough Go Away, Never Come Back Any Day

That was my balloon arrangement for a good friend. She was confined last week due to recurring fever. She is 5 months on the family way. Her lab tests revealed that UTI was the culprit of her fever. She was further diagnosed to be nursing a myoma (you know, I am a myoma-phobic following what it did to my Ate’s pregnancy). We were all relieved after knowing that the location of the fibroid will not do any harm to her developing baby.

On a relative note, our household is also fighting this infection brought by the “cold” (and cough) weather. You know everybody say “uso talaga ngayon yan”, but I don’t think were a family that goes with what the trend dictates, so we sure hate our situation. It was Uno that was hit 1st, 1 nanny next, me, Dos and esposo, followed. But Dos’ cold and/or cough didn’t manifest early, which was alarming. He was running with on-off fever for several days before it became clear to us that it was just colds. Huh, thank goodness!

For the past week, water and vitamin C was our greatest weapon. It also helped that the kids were nebulized with plain NSS, because it ease their sticky phlegm. Vicks Vaporub also did a great job. Lysol Disinfectant Spray was also helpful. And of course our 1 text away Pedia, was our stress-reliever.

As of today, the other nanny was still uninfected, Uno is now on the 98% recovery stage. I think I’m running 90% now and esposo is now 95% healed. The nanny that was struck has no speaking voice now, so I cannot rate her recovery. Dos run a 37.7 temp last night, but his sleep is getting better, I think he’s on his 60% right now.

I wish we all get well soon. The esposo vowed for a day-out once we’re all 100% okay.

Ever Changing Mind

Uno wanted to have a Dora themed party for her 3rd birthday. I am not a fan so I kept on persuading her for a cuter theme, Hello Kitty perhaps. But no, she has a mind of her own and insisted on having a Dora party. It’s her party and her decisiveness was admirable, so there, Dora party for her 3rd birthday. I made sure I infuse some Dora related stuff while I prepare for Dos’ basketball party so I won’t cram during the 1 week birthday interval. Not until…

She was given this pair of shoes. She’s so fond of it that she wore this with everything, even in undies. It was as fast as the blink of an eye Hello Kitty was her new Dora. It became her favorite and wanted to have it as her birthday theme.

Me: Diba, you’re having a Dora party.

Her: No, Hello Kitty only.

Me: Oh, no. We cannot change it anymore, I already bought Dora balloons.

Her: It’s okay, just buy Hello Kitty balloons.

You’re so clever baby. Now I’m cramming.

It's Over But Not Quite

Today, the 29th of October is a holiday. I self-proclaimed that though.hehe

Did you ever feel so bored and empty following the day of what seem to be the most tiring, the most hectic and busiest day of your life? I always do. I am actually on that note today. I’m here in the office right now, but seem longing for something to do (not work related – I declared this day a holiday, right?lol). Must be the adrenaline rush, I somewhat missed the cutting, lay-outing, researching I used to do while I prepare for Dos’ birthday party, (not to mention the exchange of communications from various suppliers). Hay, it was over, a bittersweet ending.

I’m very proud of myself, of mi esposo. I couldn’t actually believe we were able to execute our ideas well enough to be appreciated by our guests. Oh well, the DIYs was actually solely my idea, he was totally against it. But I am glad after some ~~crying scenes and a lot of arguments~~ time he learned to embrace our project (with rolling eyes every now and then).

But let me tell you a little secret, it's not really over. Uno's actual birthday is on Saturday and I'm planning to give a little something for my baby g. So, I better enjoy this day, because sooner than later, I’ll be back to work. You don’t need to roll those eyes my dear esposo. I got this covered. Mwah

Isang Dekada Na!

September 13 is the day we hark back to the start of our relationship. It’s been 10 years now, but I can still feel like it was only yesterday. Time really flies when you’re having fun. It’s a big milestone but we didn’t have anything fancy. We just took the day-off to run to a party-related errand, had lunch and spent the rest of the afternoon in hibernation. #AloneatLastAngDrama

It’s was our 10th year, of course I wouldn’t just let it pass. I actually made an effort for this particular gift, it was months in the process. Since the day it was announced that the NBA Global Games will be staged in the country and the esposo made a pronouncement that he NEED-to-catch-it-LIVE, I knew that it was the best gift for him. I stayed attune of the ticket selling, ~~saved money~~ made way to source the fund and waited. Finally, I got it on the 2nd hour (just because I had a credit card issues on the 1st hour) of the 1st day of ticket sales. I had it even before we went to Misibis Bay for our Family Anniversary but thought "our" anniversary was the perfect timing.

On the night of September 13, approximately the same time as when I gave my yes to him 10 years back, I gave my gift. He was elated as usual, surprised, happy and excited. And as a common practise, he didn’t have anything for me. I'm expecting that, so I'm prepared...

I bought 2 tickets, no worries. J

He's Double 1

My baby boy is exactly 11 months old today. Whoa! That means I only have 1 month to prepare for his birthday party. Preparing for his party was a lot different with his Ate’s. As in, a LOT! Uno’s 1st birthday party preparations were relaxed and cool, to think I only had 1 month of preparations then. Now, I feel stressed and frazzled. Admittedly, money was a big factor here. Then, I only have to say “I like this” or “okay” and the planner will do as told. Now that the family's disposable income is no longer in existence, every detail should be scrutinized. I planned to do everything by myself, to save money.

But I couldn’t seem to start. All the possible venues I could search online were already reserved. I started scouting for possible venues more than 2 months before the target date but all those that fall within budget were booked, those that weren’t booked yet have sky-rocket rates. I am not talking about a handful of venues here, I think I called-up every-single-party-venues in QC, Ortigas and Manila. Even the planner could no longer give a place that I didn’t know or called yet (yes, I still contracted her, I needed help you know. hehe) Same thing with the party host, the most recommended host/magician online were no longer available. I have to put-up a different show for this 1. I’m thinking, Dos’ birth day must be the happiest day in the Metro with all these simultaneous merrymakings.

With these turn of events, I hope I could still put-out a great party for Dos. I hope this would be as fun and memorable as his Ate’s. I hope that everyone would have a good time.

My kids may be too young to remember their 1st birthday parties, but I will never forget.

My Young Star, Superstar

“Photos are the best souvenir you can give your baby”. During those years that babies are unaware of their own antics, only photos can prove that it did exist. I may be a little guilty of not capturing as much precious moments of Dos as compared to Uno before (blame it to the non-existence of a reliable phone camera) but at least I tried to document quite a few.

Last July 5, the family was invited to a party in honor of my good friend’s daughter’s birthday. Since I know that my ever reliable photographer/friend, Fidel, will cover the event, I took the chance and booked him for Dos’ photoshoot session after the party - the occasion, just because Dos can then sit-up. J

Of course you know Fidel if you’re a regular here (just a review, he did a photoshoot with Uno, covered Uno’s 1st birthday party and my maternity photoshoot). He’s a part-time, freelance photographer who learned photography by mere passion (mind you, you’ll be the best once you’re passionate about your craft). Aside from his regular work in the corporate world, he also attends to various photography needs as a 2nd source of income. He operates a photobooth for all occasions, he (photo)covers for various occasions and now he does videography too. I warned you, passions can be lethal. Wanted: An Autobot

I just needed to break this coma – coma of writing an article, that is. My last “valid” blog entry was written in July for a story which happened in June, coma indeed right? This coma was simply brought about by overwhelming experiences that was overlapping with each other, overwhelming and overlapping enough that I didn't know which 1 to write 1st. Will I write based on occurrence, based on importance or based on price?lol The last was of course a joke. I just wished I was paid to write, my sponsor stopped sponsoring too, which killed my passion to write. #ImSoMukhangPera #IKnow I also became work-related busy which came side-by-side with the preparations of the past milestones in my personal life, my family life and my life in general (what's the difference between those 3 lives? Nothing, I just thought it's fun to dissect. J). And of course, plain laziness was never out of the list of culprits - or maybe it is the only culprit, after all.

I sometimes wish my PC can read my mind and automatically type what I’m thinking, or maybe my brain would have an optic nerve or something that can send messages to my PC, transcribed it and viola a blog post. Either way, I know that won’t happen, at least not in this lifetime. So here, I’m trying to keep my acts together, saying nonsense, wasting your time and typing away to break the drought.

This post is like vocalization of some sort, where every singers needs to do in order to perform well. And so, I wouldn't need to explain in my opening paragraph ~~in case I thought of writing again~~, tomorrow. I hope I motivated myself well enough, the file in this PC specifically dedicated to blogging is about to self-destruct.

I’ve been very busy the past month that I can’t find enough time to squeeze my blogging. I have a lot to share but not now, perhaps. For now, I would just like to announce the winners of our Family Give-away sponsored by Firmo Eyewear. Day 3 : The Family Escapade at Misibis Bay

Ah, the sweet life (or as Uno would say “the best day ever”, got it from Spongebob of course)! That’s was our experience during our Day1 and the Day2 in Misibis Bay. Our 3rd day was a little bitter though, because we all knew that sooner, this fairyland will vanish and real world will kick-in.

DAY 3:

Typhoon “Gorio” was mean to us. He decided to give his full rage that day, putting Albay on Signal No. 2. But Misibis Bay wouldn’t claim to be “Weather Proof” for nothing, though they stopped operations for their outdoor activities (for safety reasons). There are still tons of things to actually enjoy indoors (time was the one who’s KJ).

After our filling buffet breakfast, we headed immediately to the activity center. Uno and I played a little Ping-Pong. Err, we actually pushed the ball towards each other using the racket. It was so fun to see her giggle with laughter.

When Uno got tired, I left the kiddos inside the playroom and challenge the Esposo for a billiard match. We played 2 sets of 8-balls, 2 of which I lost.hehe Divided naman kasi ang attention ko between the kids and the game. #Palusot

After that no-match billiard game (kung makapagsalita, kala mo nanalo), we went upstairs for karaoke-time. There was also a Foosball table which got the curiosity of the little girl, but I told her we will sing “Maya Song” aka Please be Careful with My Heart, so she didn’t argue. There was also a business center which was calling me, but the call of Uno to sing was louder, so it's videoke time for all of us.

We wanted to dip in our private pool after, but changed our minds. ~~Ang lamig kasi.~~ I have to pack yet. Our luggage was picked-up on time (a schedule was given to us the night before). We were picked up next. The rain was too strong that time that we have to wrap the kids with bathroom towels and soaked our feet in an ankle deep flood in front of the villa’s door. It was really tough because we have to hold the umbrella with one hand, carry the kids on the other and sling our hand-carries. That’s okay because I believe that they scheduled that to meet our flight schedule.

To my surprise we were just made to wait for almost an hour in the reception area. The van assigned to us was not there (or is it heading back to the resort from Legaspi yet). Worst when the van arrived, the rain has settled. See, sana, hindi muna kami sinundo. Sana tuyo lang kami at komportable yung mga bata sa villa since technically we’re still paid up to the 12pm - standard check-out time. I wish they’d be more sensitive next time.

It’s our last minute, useless to complain. Anyway, that was a super minor glitch considering all the VIP treatments we received from them. And as we swore, we would definitely be back at Misibis Bay (considering I haven't set my feet on their sand).

The service van was again, Super Grandia - all to ourselves. Accordingly, it’s the only type of vehicle they use as service to guests. As usual, the kuya driver made the long travel barely noticeable. He also showed us interesting fact. Apparently, there’s a part of the ocean that sea-vehicles use as resting station during storm rage. There was 1 passenger vessel when we passed that area, kuya predicts that later that day, it would be filled with vessels cautious in facing the storm.

We arrived at the Legazpi Airport on time, but our flight back to Manila was cancelled due to the storm. An adventure awaits the family anew. Extended vacation we’re ready for you. J
