Halloween and November Update

The season for many hotels in Torquay is coming to an end as Halloween approaches and the half term comes to an end. We are now half way through the half term week and Torquay is still really busy which is fantastic to see.

Walking through the town today I was surprised at how many new shops and cafe's, restaurants and bars have opened over this year. I very rarely get out of the hotel to go into town much over the season as we try and do most things by ourselves to ensure the quality and finish is as expected. I am looking forward to sampling a lot of the new places over the Winter though....so I can recommend places of course :)

Despite the large storm that took place this week the weather has been extremely mild all the way through October. It feels almost more like the end of Summer than the start of Winter to be honest.

As mentioned Halloween is approaching and here are a few events on this week if your in Torquay or thinking about visiting.

We zoom into October and although the shops are already promoting Christmas it seriously feels more like Summer here in Torquay. It was 22 Degrees today with many people walking around in their summer clothes and if the nights were not drawing in earlier each day I would have thought it was still Summer. This is of course great for Torquay as the town has stayed really busy with this weekend again being another sell out.

We have just had the Agatha Christie festival finish and it was a phenomenal success. A massive congratulations has to go out to everyone involved in promoting and organising the events. The festival seems to get better every year so I am looking forward to hearing what events will be held next year for the 2014 festival.

There are still some great things happening in around Torbay and Torquay in October. Along with the great events there is also plenty of choice for the sports enthusiasts. I am a keen surfer and the water temperature is probably its warmest for the year right now. We have had some great waves here for the last few weeks so I have of course been begging for a few hours off here and there to make the most of it. :)

Agatha Christie Festival 2013 - Events (part 3)

The Agatha Christie festival is getting ever closer and here is part 3, a continuation of further events planned for one of Torquay's premier events of the 2013 calender year.

1) Dinner, Tour and Talk from Doctor Joan Oates, contemporary of Agatha Christie at Nimrud: An Archaeologist's View of Northern Iraq in the 1950s. (17/9/2013)

Taking place at Kents Cavern in Torquay enjoy three course dinner, tour of the caves and talk from eminent archaeologist Dr Joan Oates, who worked at Nimrud with Max Mallowan and his wife Agatha Christie-Mallowan. A wine reception begins at 6.30pm and tickets are priced at £50 per person.

2) 1940s and 50s soiree and cruise aboard WWII heritage ship Fairmile (18/9/2013)

Departing Torquay Princess Pier at 7pm the Fairmile a WWII heritage ship welcomes you aboard to enjoy a soiree and cruise. Dress to impress in the style of the 1940's and 1950's as music from the era is played whilest canapés and a welcome glass of champagne is served. Tickets are priced at £20 per person.

3) Mathew Prichard and Mystery Guest (19/9/2013)

Come to see Mathew Prichard with a mystery special guest to be announced shortly before the festival

4) Thriller writer Val McDermid as special guest at Literary Dinner (19/9/2013)

Val McDermid will be the special guest at the the Agatha Christie Festival Literary Dinner at Torquay's Grand Hotel. McDermid is a top ten best seller, translated into over 30 languages, and author of the recently published The Vanishing Point. A three course dinner will be served with the event being a black tie event. Tickets are priced at £45.00 per person.

5) Literary Panel with Kate Mosse and Simon Brett (20/9/2013)

Join Kate Mosse and Simon Brett the special guests for a Literary Panel event at the Grand Hotel, Torquay. Both authors will be talking about their inspirations drawn from Agatha Christie. There will be welcome drinks and canapes for this event and tickets are priced at £25 per person

Agatha Christie Festival 2013 - Events (part 2)

As promised here is part two of my focus on the Agatha Christie Festival 2013.. In this update I am going to look at some of the highlight events on between the 15th September 2013 - 22nd September 2013 with the events taking place across Torquay and Torbay. 1) Cocktails, Costumes, Cake and Cole Porter (15th September 2013)
Enjoy a birthday celebration at the Grand hotel which was where Agatha Christie enjoyed her honeymoon. A cocktail and piece of cake await you on arrival before a sing-along with a Cole Porter trio. Cost is set at £20 per person but could change before the event.

2) Literary Supper with Laura Thompson (16th September 2013)
A literary supper with Agatha Christie’s biographer Laura Thompson is being hosted by the Cary Arms in Babbacombe. Laura Thompson was recently seen with David Suchet on the ITV documentary “Perspectives” the programme where Suchet follows in Christie’s footsteps.

3) Agatha Christie Festival: Murder Mystery Dining Train (17th September 2013)
A great evening has been organised by some great local companies who have come together to offer a great Murder Mystery event aboard the Riviera Belle Dining Train. The Candlelight Theatre Company will be performing with cuisine provided by Hennessy Restaurant in Torquay. Cost is set at £60 per person but may change before the event

4) Go Back For Murder - Princess Theatre (16-21st September 2013)
The Agatha Christie Theatre Company presents a production of the queen of crime’s classic Go Back For Murder. Tickets range from £10- £29.50. Call into the English Riviera Visitor Information Centre on Torquay harbour side to book.

5) In Character Lunch at Burgh Island (17th September 2013)
Enjoy a character themed lunch at Burgh Island the fanous Art Deco retreat. Make sure you dress the part as the period lunch is served followed by a tour of the hotel's private grounds which will focus on significant markers in Agatha Christie's writing history. Unfortunately no transport from Torquay will be provided for this event however transport from Bigbury to the island will be provided. Lunch is to be served at 12:30 and tickets cost £60 per person.

With so much going on in Torquay towards the end of August with all the Bank Holiday events we are also very aware that just around the corner we have the Agatha Christie Festival 2013.

This is easily one of Torbay's busiest weeks with all the Torquay hotels expecting to be sold out, this year looks to be the best ever with so many great events organised. Over the next few weeks in to the build up to the festival I will be looking at what events are on and also looking a bit into the history of the worlds all time best selling fiction author.

First of all apologies for the lack of activity here on the blog, we have been so busy here that I literally have been on the go all summer. It is already August and Torquay is very busy at the moment. There are not many hotels, guest houses and B&B's in Torquay that are not full at the moment. It is a great month to visit the English Riviera as their are so many great events on and so much to see and do, especially with this amazing weather that we are enjoying this summer.

Whether you are visiting Torquay to just relax on one of the stunning beaches or if you feel like something a little more active, Torquay has pretty much something for everyone! HEATWAVE!!! You know Summer should be here when Wimbledon is on the TV but the weather is definitely letting me know Summer is here right now. What a gorgeous week we have had here in Torquay on the English Riviera. The English Riviera is truly living up to its name with the breathtaking scenery dazzling in the summer sun. Breaking News - The Meadfoot Bay Hotel in Torquay is a Certificate of Excellence winner on Tripadvisor!!!

I know this probably does not constitute as massive news but for us here at The Meadfoot Bay Hotel in Torquay we are so very proud so a massive thank you to everyone that has supported us over the last 7 years and given us such fabulous reviews. Whenever we get a nice review it really makes our day so again thank you so much.

Torquay was host to the Miss England and Mr England finals and a massive congratulations to the winners Kirsty Heslewood who won Miss England 2013 and Jordan Williams who won Mr England 2013.

Also on last weekend was the Super Weekend Show which once again proved a massive success and now thanks to the show I need to win the lottery so I can afford all the amazing super cars and super yachts that were on display....one day! :)

The Torbay half marathon is one of the South West’s most popular races and I personally would love to be taking part with many of my friends who are running the race and raising large amounts of money for charity. Unfortunately injury has stopped me this year but I wanted to wish everyone taking part on Sunday all the best and I'm sure it will be a fantastic day.

June in The English Riviera and Torquay

An amazing June so far and we are fresh off the back of a jam packed week in the hotel. No rest though as we are having a busy midweek with lots of delegates staying and attending various conferences in Torquay. The week is therefore flying by as we get ready for what is going to be a special weekend here in Torquay.

Without making this the longest blog post ever, let's just say there is a ton of great events on this weekend and something I feel for everyone.

The headliners for the weekend are without doubt The Super Weekend 2013 show and The Miss England and Mr England finals which are being held in Torquay. These events are likely to attract a lot of people to Torbay and Torquay especially with the mass media covering the Miss England and Mr England finals in particular. The finals are to be held at two of the oldest Torquay Hotels and hotel rooms will be hard to find this weekend so if you haven't booked anywhere yet...it might be a good idea. :)

The Super Weekend 2013 show is a fairly new event for Torbay which started last year and due to its popularity returns again this year. The event showcases Superbrands such as Aston Martin, Jaguar, Bentley, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Ducati, Harley-Davidson just to name a few. New for this year are the Flyboard experiences, theme nights including a James Bond theme night as well as live music, an event not to be missed.

Other things to do in Torquay this weekend include taking a ride on the English Riviera Wheel, taking in the popular Babbacombe Festival and also taking Dad out on Father's Day on Sunday 16th. Do not forget the last one!!!

A massive congratulations to the good people at Occombe Farm who hosted one of the most popular events held in Torbay which is namely the Occombe Farm Beer Festival. I must admit I did manage to sneak away for the evening and try a few of the ales! A fabulous event with a great atmosphere and great music (and beer)

Torquay Update - May 18th 2013

Saturday the 18th May and the sun is shining!!!

Now I have announced that I just wanted to give you insight to what a night in Torquay could possibly be like if you wanted a suggestion. We of course have our what's on page as a quick reference but instead of listing just events I think it is important to mention some of the amazing businesses in and around Torquay.

Last night a couple in the bar were telling me about their day and I must admit I was incredibly jealous. It went a little something like this.

1) Woke up and had an amazing breakfast (of course) at The Meadfoot Bay Hotel in Torquay (+Meadfoot Bay Hotel Torquay) :)
2) Walked to Cockington Village where they explored the gardens and tea rooms and indulged in a cream tea.
3) Headed back direction harbour and saw some dolphins playing in the Bay
4) Had a light bite on the harbour and a beer at The Offshore Cafe before taking a walk back to the Hotel to get ready for their evening meal and to have a pre-dinner drink in the hotel bar (served by yours truly)
5) Headed into town where they ate in "The Room" at The Elephant restaurant and had a fantastic meal at Torquay's Michelin Star restaurant.
6) Came and enjoyed a drink in the hotel bar and then went back to their room which is our brand new Signature Suite with Terrace.

I would have been very happy with that day for sure and if you are coming to Torquay definately a day out that I can recommend.

May 2013 - Almost Bank Holiday Time Again!!!

The early May Bank Holiday was a massive success and now already just around the corner we all have another Bank Holiday to look forward to. Yes!!!

I will be updating the blog with a "What to do in Torquay on the Bank Holiday" post but just to give you an insight as to what's happening the Powerboats will be back in town with races on Torquay harbour, Brixfest, Brixham Heritage Sailing Regatta and The English Riviera Geopark Festival just to name a few.

England Rugby World Cup 2015

Just seen some great news that Exeter will be one of the host cities for the England Rugby World Cup 2015 with matches being held at Sandy Park. I know that this is long way away but this is fantastic news for Exeter and all the surrounding areas including Torquay. With the tournament being held all over the country it will truly benefit the UK and again give us all the chance to show that England is truly a special place to visit.

The weather has turned and almost now feels like we sidestepped Spring and have headed into Summer. No complaints from me as it times in very nicely with the upcoming Bank Holiday here in Torquay.

There are so many things on this coming weekend that this post would become huge if I listed all of them but here are a few that really stand out for me.

I like that each part of Torbay is offering a festival this year. Torquay is hosting TorqEat on the harbour and this promises to be a great free event as 35 producers showcase a real taste of Torbay. In Paignton the BMAD biking experience takes place and is a lot of fun whether you are in to biking or not. Brixham is again looking to break records as it hosts its Pirate Festival which is always one of the most popular events of the year.

Fishing in Torquay

Fishing in Torquay is a great way to explore the area and meet some great people. I have had a lot of facebook questions asking me about where is best to fish in Torquay and Devon so I have therefore decided to try and provide as much knowledge as I can on this subject and truly hope the following information on fishing in Torquay is helpful for people planning their holiday.

Great places to fish in Torquay

Torquay is in my opinion one of the most beautiful places in the world and a great place to have a fishing holiday. If you are staying with us here at The Meadfoot Bay Hotel in Torquay then just a short walk away is the stunning Meadfoot Beach and Thunder Hole. A real local's spot which is also a great place to enjoy the sunrise or sunset. Nearby you have Torquay harbour which is just a short walk away and the area that is best to head to is by the Princess Theatre on the pier. The bonus of this spot is the easy access to shops and restaurants if you need to stock up on food and tea and coffee if required.

Hopes Nose is the next spot on my list of recommended places to fish in Torquay. It is regarded as more of a professional fishing area with a mix of float and bottom fish fishing available here.

Babbacombe pier is also very popular but has been known to get a little crowded with many fishing from one place...a great place to have a chat though :)

A little further afield you have Elberry Cove in Broadsands. This area is a favourite for catching bottom fish like flounder and also spinning bass.

Brixham Breakwater is where most of the fishing records for Torbay have been set and as one of the busiest active fishing ports still in the country it makes a great day out to go fishing here and also take in the feel Brixham which is truly unique to Torbay.

Greetings from The English Riviera! Torquay is looking gorgeous right now as we have blue sky, the sun is shining and may I dare say it.....Spring is here!!!

Some really great things happening in the hotel and in Torquay. This morning has been really busy as our Classic Rooms have all received brand new Super King-Size Beds!!! The new beds are unbelievably comfy and we cannot wait for our guests to enjoy them.

It may seem a little insignificant to big companies but we have just received our 100th like on Facebook! We are really proud of this and hope to get many more likes in the future. Opening Day here at The Meadfoot Bay Hotel in Torquay. Shame that the weather is not being kind to us today but wit a drier day forecasted for tomorrow I am hopeful for a great opening weekend here in Torquay.

A steady start here to 2013 with the hotel looking fantastic in my biased opinion of course! :)

All hands on deck here at The Meadfoot Bay Hotel in Torquay. The entire team is getting involved in preparation for opening weekend here March 22nd 2013. We have Caroline taking care of the painting, Chris is sanding the doors ready to be repainted and I'm doing busy in the garden lifting all the heavy stuff :) Who needs the gym!!

Well as you can imagine when re-opening a hotel after a winter of refurbishment there is a lot to do. We have been busy his winter on making some key amendments to the hotel including making some massive improvements to some of our rooms. Behind the scenes we have had some great new technology installed to help us be as green as possible including a brand new energy efficient boiler system.

Meadfoot Beach Sunrise - March 2013

The weather in Torquay has been great the last few days and have spent the last few mornings enjoying the glorious sunrise down at Meadfoot Beach. It is interesting what is defined as a great location these days but if you love the beach then a visit to Meadfoot Beach is a must.

Torquay is really busy at the moment and lots happening. With Easter falling at the end of March this means that a lot of the seasonal operations open early which is great for visitors to Torbay. Easter is looking very busy here at the hotel with only 3 rooms currently left to book.

Great News for Torquay Hotels

Some great news received today courtesy of a Service Quality Survey compiled by online reservation service hotel.info. It ranks Torquay Hotels at number 5 for the first time and nearly 40 years since the English Riviera has been in the spotlight. This is a great achievement by all the local hoteliers who have truly upped their game and invested heavily in their business. This also shows the great work that The English Riviera Tourism Team is doing for the area as they promote the Bay on a global scale. This great news follows on the back of Torquay being voted at number 4 in the UK of places to visit in Tripadvisor's Traveller's Choice Awards in 2012.

Hotel News

The hotel refurbishment is almost complete and we are putting the final touches on the rooms in preparation for our opening weekend on March 22nd 2013. We have a lot of return guests already booked in for this season so I cannot wait to get their reaction on the new rooms and also the general changes we have done here in the hotel.

Moving with the times here in Torquay

So many Torquay hotels are doing great things as the resort goes from strength to strength both in accommodation standards but also trying to be as environmentally friendly as possible. We are also trying to do our bit and will significantly reduce our carbon footprint as a result of replacing our 30 year old boiler system with a brand new low energy boiler system.

In other news The Meadfoot Bay Hotel is very much embracing the social media side of things offering our fans and people who like our page the opportunity to book their stay without even leaving Facebook. We have an online booking facility now integrated into our Facebook page! So if you are on Facebook and want to like us, we would like that a lot! :)

February 2013 Update - Happy Valentines Day

February is almost at the half way stage and the refurbishment at the hotel is really coming along now. As mentioned in previous posts I was going to put up step by step pictures but have instead opted to post all the pictures and videos once the new rooms are complete.

With the hotel re-opening on the 22nd March 2013 here are just a few of the upgrades we have done to the hotel.

Valentines Day is almost upon us and in case you have not already bought your loved one something then nudge nudge...it might be worth doing that! :) I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has enquired for Valentines day this year, if we were not working tirelessly on improving the hotel we would have loved to welcome you all this Valentines Day and thank you so much for thinking of us. I have never witnessed such demand for Valentines breaks in the 7 years that we have had The Meadfoot Bay Hotel in Torquay and hope that it is a sign of really great 2013 for Torquay and Torbay.

Very Much Hard At Work in Torquay

Brrrrr it's a bit cold outside!!!

Well I know I shouldn't complain about the cold as we experience a lot milder conditions then most in the UK in the winter times but Torbay saw a few snow flakes yeterday!

We have been really busy as we again refuse to rest before next season. We are working really hard to upgrade the hotel again as well as keeping the hotel in pristine condition. We have a few exciting projects under way including creating two new Luxury Suites, one new Classic Double Room and a new Classic Single Room. Pictures to come as soon as they are complete.

Already the 2013 season looks like it is going to be great. The events in Torquay seem to get better every year as the resort is once again putting itself on the map as one of the finest places in the UK to take a holiday.

Although we are closed through until the 22nd March 2013 for our refurbishment, here are a few great events coming up in January.
