"County Rescue" on Great American Pure Flix

I must admit, when I first heard the name "County Rescue", my first thought was a county fair or something to that effect. How wrong I was! This new show is about EMT's experiencing the beginning of their careers and the challenges that are inevitable.

If you enjoy a good medical drama, this might be right up your alley. The first episode introduces two very new, very nervous EMT's. I admire anyone who can work as an EMT because they are on the front-line, taking care of people on (probably) one of the worst days of their lives. This is the story of an EMT unit who save lives while navigating their own life, love, and faith.

The characters face trials of faith, insecurity, and so many things that many of us face regularly.

This show will be available on Great American Pure Flix on 2/23/24, and on Great American Family on 2/26/24. Remember, everything on these platforms is clean and safe for the whole family to watch.

Quick Crafting Projects For The Home

As a crafty person, the chances are that you love wearing or displaying your homemade pieces. After all, these are entirely unique to you. Plus, nothing quite beats the satisfaction of being able to say ‘I made it’ when someone compliments you on that new bag, sweater, or pair of gloves.

Yet, when it comes to our homes, too many of us crafty folks prefer to fall back on shop-bought pieces. In part, this is because of an imagined difficulty in making home décor that’s always on display and will typically receive heavy usage.

In this article, we consider just a few of the quick crafting projects that your home could benefit from.

Crochet Pot Covers

If you understand even just a few basic crochet stitches, then crochet pot covers are a great way to add little pops of creativity into your home space. Best of all is the fact that you can probably whip these up in as little as an hour depending on their size. All you’ll need is –

The crochet hook size recommended for your chosen yarn
One 100g ball of your choice of yarn
A tape measure

Method: Measure the length and width of the pot of your choosing (this could be a plant pot, a small storage container, a tea caddy, etc.). Make a crochet chain that measures slightly less than the width of your pot. Crochet back and forth in a stitch of your choosing until your cover is the desired length. Join your ends using your chosen crochet stitch.

Sewn Bunting

Bunting can be a great addition to plain walls and as window hangings. If you have a sewing machine and some rudimentary skills, it’s also surprisingly easy to make your own. You’ll need –

A sewing machine
A bag of scrap or quilting materials
Bias binding
Trim materials (optional)

Method: Cut two triangles out of each fabric pattern of your choosing. Place both triangles together with the right sides down. If you’re using a trim, feed this between the triangles, making sure to leave a 1 cm gap at the top. Stitch along both diagonal edges, making sure to catch the trim. Turn your triangle the right way and pin to your bias binding using the 1 cm allowance at the top. Do this for all triangles, leaving a 5 cm gap between each triangle. Carefully sew your bias binding, and hang it in a position of your choosing.

Alternately, you could hot glue the triangles to the bias binding or ribbon.

Knit Tea Towels

While you’ll want to avoid making tea towels out of wool, it’s entirely possible to create stunning tea towels out of cotton or bamboo yarns and simple stitches. By choosing funky colors, or even self-striping yarn, homemade kitchen towels are sure to be a lot more attractive than plain, shop-bought alternatives. You’ll need –

Straight knitting needles of the size specified on your yarn band
A 100g ball of bamboo or cotton yarn
A darning needle

Method: Cast on an even number of stitches. This will vary depending on the size you would like your tea towel to be, but bear in mind that knitting does tend to come out larger than your initial cast-on might seem. Knit straight in garter stitch (knitting on both sides) until your tea towel is the desired length. Cast off using your preferred method, and use your darning needle to sew in your ends.

Origami Wall Decorations

Origami is an ancient Japanese art that can create stunning additions to your home with little more than a sheet of paper and some basic knowledge. If you already know a few origami techniques, then making these work in the home is as simple as framing them and finding somewhere to hang them. Even if you’ve never tried origami before, you can create some stunning home decor using simple techniques. You’ll need –

A pack of card, preferably colored
An origami tutorial
A frame of your choosing

Method: Decide which origami shape you would like to make out of options that include an origami heart, origami boats, and origami lotus flowers amongst others. Find a tutorial that works for you, and practice a few times using paper. Create enough origami items using your card to fill your chosen frame. Cover the frame’s backing with a spare sheet of card in a complementary color to your origami figures. Position your figures according to your preferences, and then hang your frame in pride of place.

A Crochet Throw

Of all the lengthy home projects that you’re avoiding, a throw of any kind is probably top of the list. After all, a sizable throw could take months or even years of work. But, if you scale things down, you can end up with a pretty attractive throw out of little more than scraps from your yarn stash. All you’ll need is –

Several 50ish gram balls of yarn scraps in colors that work well together
A crochet hook suitable for your yarn (e.g. a US G-6 hook for double knit, or a US L-11 for chunky)
A darning needle to knit in your ends

Method: Chain 4 and begin a basic granny square. Keep growing your granny square, changing the color with each new row, and alternating your yarn choices. Keep going until your granny square is large enough to fit, folded over, on the bottom of a small chair, or across the arm of your couch.

Conclusion

None of these projects should take you much more than a few evenings of work to complete, and yet they can all become affordable, but striking, decor for your home. Even if you’ve never knitted, crocheted, or any of the other crafts mentioned before, none of these projects should be out of your reach after watching a few basic tutorials.

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to turn your crafting hand to your home at long last.

Mom & Me craft: Hand Print Polar Bears

Most of the crafts I've done with my kids over the years have involved me supervising while they craft, but occasionally it's fun to craft with them. My daughter loved making these "Mom & Me Hand Print Polar Bears" not too long ago.

I got the idea from Simple Everyday Mom. All you need is a glue stick, googly eyes, construction paper and scissors!

It's so easy to customize.

Just start with a background paper.
Add some ice bergs in other colors.
Cut out some brown trees (I just free-handed it)
Trace your and your child's hand print on white paper. Glue it to the paper.

Cut that out and draw little toes on the fingers.
Over the thumb, glue a white circle.

Cut out ears and glue those on. Add some googly eyes or draw them on.
Add a cute little nose and smile and your polar bears are done! I drew my toes/face and my daughter drew hers.

“A Christmas for the Ages” on Great American Pure Flix 11/26/23

First off, Happy Thanksgiving to all of my American friends! I hope you’re loving time spent with friends and family today. May your turkey be perfectly flavorful and moist, and your pies leave you content. If you’re among the population that waits until after Thanksgiving to do anything Christmas related, tomorrow is the big day.

Great American Pure Flix has Christmas movies to watch all throughout the rest of November and December as you prepare for Christmas. On November 26, you can watch “A Christmas for the Ages”.

In this new movie, four generations of women decide to celebrate Christmas with each generation’s traditions and memories. They celebrate how each generation would have celebrated in the 40’s, 60’s, 90’s and present-day.

This movie is a wonderful chance to see how your parents/grandparents/aunts/etc may have celebrated in previous years. I love the outfits and the camaraderie celebrated by this group of women. How would your Christmas be different if you were celebrating in the 40’s? This year is the perfect time to talk to those who have lived longer and see what the past was like. Make memories that you can share with your future generations. Take pictures, and record those memories. I love that “A Christmas for the Ages” reminds all of us of what’s truly important…family.

Halloween crafts to use up your yarn stash

If you're anything like me, you have *somehow* accumulated more yarn than you'll ever be able to use. It's hard to let go of that precious yarn because you know it's worth.

However, if you've realized it's time to use some of it up, here are a few fun Halloween crafts/activities to do so:

1. Giant spider's web: let your kids go wild between two trees/other objects in your front yard. I made a giant spider's web one year, and ever since, my kids love doing it themselves. This year, my 9 year old made our spider's web on her own and spent hours happily working on it.

Just hand them the skeins of yarn you're ready to let go of, and set them loose!

2. Spider Orb: make a small orb with balloons and yarn for your fake spiders to hang out in.

3. Framed Spider Web: using an old frame, make a web that's easy to take down at the end of Halloween.

"Birthright Outlaw" on Great American Pure Flix

Sometimes I feel like my generation was robbed to a degree. I grew up long after the western classics were filmed. While I did watch some, and have some knowledge of the great actors/actresses, I had limited exposure to western films.

Great American Pure Flix is giving us a chance to get a taste of the old western style with their latest release, "Birthright Outlaw". In this film, a pastor named Jeremiah and his wife Martha are living out in old west Arizona. Their life seems perfect despite the hard living conditions, and their family appears to be happy. (Granted, that's how it always seems in movies!). One day, their daughter is kidnapped and everything the pastor thought he knew about his wife comes into question.

Martha is played by Sarah Drew, who you may recognize from Grey's Anatomy! The cast is wonderful, and I enjoyed the story. "Birthright Outlaw" is available on Great American Pure Flix now. It's a simply lovely story of faith, loyalty, and family. Watch a preview here.

“Divine Influencer” on Great American Pure Flix

If you haven’t noticed, Pure Flix is no longer just Pure Flix…they have merged this week with Great American Movies, and are now Great American Pure Flix. Not to worry, they will still have wholesome, clean films and shows for the whole family to enjoy. Hopefully, the shows will only get better and have more variety with this merger.

Now, to the reason I’m posting. Great American Pure Flix released a new movie today. That movie is “Divine Influencer”. It wasn’t until I was watching the movie that I realized the word influencer in the title was because the main character is a social media influencer. She enjoys a life of privilege until her parents cut her off and she loses everything.

In an act of desperation, she accepts a job at a homeless shelter. Throughout the movie, the main character learns that influencing others can have so much more meaning than the everyday “influencing” in social media or other means. This movie is a great reminder of what’s truly important in life, and how we can use our talents and gifts to influence others for the better.

I think this was one of my favorite movies so far and I hope you will enjoy it too. Let me know what you think!

Decide On A Craft

Before anything else, you will of course need to decide on which kind of craft you are going to try out. There are so many out there that it can be hard to make this decision, but you've got to start somewhere. You might consider anything from crochet to macrame and sewing, and beyond. The point is that you follow your feelings and go for what you think you are going to enjoy. If you do that, then you can’t really go too far wrong.

Whatever you decide on, make sure that you do a little research into it first, so that you can find out what it is really like and what it really entails.

Find Your Materials

No matter what craft you opt for, one thing is for sure: you’ll need to have some materials in place to get started.

To do that, you should make sure that you are looking at a variety of options. You probably have a lot of different places you can look and options to go for, so it’s something that you can keep your eyes open for. If you want to be fairly eco-friendly about it, you may want to consider a website that offers, for instance, recycled cotton macrame cords and macrame supplies, so that you are not using too many new materials. You will find an equivalent for pretty much every craft out there.

Beyond that, you might also have friends who have supplies from their own efforts in the same craft. Or you might be able to find some online which you can opt for. In any case, you should get together some supplies that you are going to be able to use, so that you can get started with your crafting as soon as possible. Once you have these in place, you are already going to feel so much more ready for your crafting experience, whichever you may have gone for.

Set Up Your Crafting Space

Although many crafts can be done anywhere, there is definitely something to be said for also having a dedicated crafting space that you can use and enjoy. This would save you from having to clear your craft off the kitchen table before dinner, and can protect your craft from kids or pets if it's in a dedicated space.

Wherever you pick for that, it should be as spacious as possible, and comfortable too. And you need to make sure that it has plenty of room for the storage of your crafting supplies too, otherwise you are not going to find it very useful at all. But if you can find something that has those qualities, this is something that is going to help you a lot, and you’ll be able to enjoy your crafts so much more as a result. It’s therefore worth thinking about this for a while until you can get it right.

Start With A Small Test Project

It’s a good idea to have some project in mind that you can try out for the specific craft that you are keen on trying your hand at. A smaller test project is usually best, one that allows you to see what skills are needed and hopefully won't overwhelm you.

Of course, you may wish to do this with a number of crafts to really get to the bottom of what you are doing and which you might want to go for. If you can do that, it’s going to mean you are much more likely to find the one that works for you, which is all that matters here.

Once you think you have found your craft, there are all sorts of ways to get deeper into it as a hobby. One great way of doing that is to find a club in the local area who you can get involved with. You’ll probably find there are lots of these around, and they are generally going to be fantastic to try out, because it turns crafting into a social thing as well, which can be really nice. So look out for such clubs and see whether they are something you want to try.

Of course, you also have the option of setting one up yourself, if you prefer or if you can’t find one you like the look of. In any case, this can cement your enjoyment of the craft for sure, so it’s something to think about.

Pure Flix's "Eleanor's Bench" review

Usually the shows I've reviewed for Pure Flix have involved parents, marriage, love, etc. This new series - Eleanor's Bench - includes aspects of parenting, marriage, love and more. But, it goes deeper than that. In Eleanor's Bench, the main character Eleanor Thomas is a judge in the Washington DC juvenile court system. I watched episode 2 of the series and was immediately pulled in and had my curiosity piqued. In a court scene, Judge Eleanor Thomas shows the attorney a different way to see the kids in the juvenile system. I loved watching the love and care she had for one teenager in particular and am intrigued to see how that relationship develops throughout the series.

While also practicing as an influential judge for juveniles, Eleanor is also forced to return home and face a past that many would want to run from. She connects to her mother and yearns to find a way to find joy through her service to others. If you've ever felt drawn to the justice system, or caring for children, I think you might enjoy this show.

Just in time for Father's Day tomorrow, Pure Flix has released a new movie. Instead of focusing on "true love" or other themes, the general focus in the movie "God's Country Song" is on fatherhood. The main character is a country singer who seems to have his whole career ahead of him. Suddenly, he finds out he's a father and has to decide what path his life is going to take.

Not only is he facing a dilemma with his own child, but he has the damaged relationship with his own father. This affects him throughout the movie as he faces his past and tries to be better for his future.

For anyone who has struggled with relationships with their parents, or other family members, this is a movie you can relate to. Not everyone's path to healing is the same, but there are many similarities often-times.

Are you ready to hear about Pure Flix's new movie? It honestly shocks me how often Pure Flix is releasing movies and TV shows. Growing up, the time it took for new movies to release felt like forever! It was a completely different world. Now, new movies and shows are released regularly and it's hard to keep up.

Anyhow, enough rambling. Let's get on to the review! I was able to watch "Sun Moon" last week, and it was the perfect show to put on while sewing the binding on my son's quilt. The pace is just right to not require 100% attention, but still keep you engaged.

In "Sun Moon", a beautiful bride (played by MacKenzie Mauzy...of NCIS: New Orleans) is left at the altar and the viewer follows her as she heals and finds joy again by teaching in Taiwan for a semester. I love learning about different cultures so my favorite part of this movie was the glimpses the audience got of Taiwan. What an incredible place!

Kelsey (the jilted bride) is forced to face her emotions, while learning about a new culture. She learns to trust again and the ending is simply adorable.

All in all, I think you'll love this movie if you've loved any of the other "Hallmark"-esque movies produced for Pure Flix. It's available to watch now!
