“A Mile in His Shoes” Review

As many of you know I have a brother with autism. This is probably the main reason I feel drawn to movies or books about autism and other disabilities. When given the chance to review the movie A Mile In His Shoes I jumped on it.

In this movie, Murph, the coach of a struggling semi-pro baseball team is on a recruiting trip when he happens to find Mickey, the son of a poor farmer. Murph discovers that Mickey has an amazing arm, but also that Mickey struggles with Asperger's Syndrome. Eventually Murph convinces Mickey to join his team and the entire cast changes as they get to know Mickey better, and come to understand Asperger's better.

Honestly, I struggled quite a bit throughout this movie. The way Mickey’s own father treats him angered me and broke my heart. I know full well that disabilities are misunderstood even within families of those who are disabled, but it still frustrated me to watch it on my screen. The ignorance of others on the team as far as how to treat Mickey also irked me. But, it was rewarding as a a viewer to watch the growth of all the characters as they come to accept Mickey for who he is, and to see Mickey eventually accept himself throughout the movie.

If you or someone you know struggles with the effects of a disability, this movie has a great message…one of hope and potential. This is also a great tool for parents and educators to spread awareness of disabilities; specifically Asperger’s.

Heart Earrings from a Paper Clip

Since getting my ears pierced, I’ve started looking for ways I can add to my earring collection without breaking the bank. When I saw Evie S’s earrings I knew I had to make my own version…heart shaped earrings from a paper clip. These are perfect for Valentine’s Day coming up or just for a fun accessory on a random day :)

The best part of these earrings? They are made from a paper clip and thread…things almost everyone has lying around!

Just take your paperclips, unfold them, trim the longer end and shape the paperclips into hearts…

Take a long piece of thread (as in like 3 feet long) and lay the end across where the two ends of the paper clip meet. Put a dab of super glue there and let dry…

Once dry, wrap your thread around the paper clip…and around, and around and around…you get the point. If you run out of thread, just tie some more on and clip the ends close to the knot. When you have gone all the way around the paper clip put a dab of glue on the thread in the same spot where you began and let that dry. Take the remainder of the thread and wrap it around the paper clip heart randomly like below…

I took some Mod Podge and “painted it” around the paper clip to keep all of the random threads in place especially since my boys love touching my earrings. Attach earring hooks and wear your new fashion accessory with pride…especially knowing how much you paid for it :)

Purex UltraPacks Review

I’m all about convenience, especially in housekeeping matters, which is why I think products like laundry soap or dishwasher soap that come in easy to use packets are a brilliant idea…so long as they work properly. Since I’ve loved the dishwasher detergent packets (when I can find them on sale), I thought I would fall in love with the new Purex UltraPacks laundry detergent as well.

As far as convenience, it can’t be beat. You just throw the UltraPack in the washer with the rest of your clothes; I don’t even have to open the dispenser drawer on my front loader washer. As far as efficiency I am honestly disappointed. More than once I have pulled my clothes out of the dryer after using one of the UltraPacks only to find large, hard clumps of detergent on random clothing articles. It comes out the next time I wash it, but I expect my clothes to be clean of everything including soap when they come out of the washer.

I did accidentally put an UltraPack in my dispenser once and it dissolved just fine and the clothes came out clean. I think that in a top-loading washer this product may work better because it would be agitated differently and dissolve differently, but just keep in mind that if you have a front loader, you may have issues with the pack completely dissolving.

I will say that our clothes do seem to be clean other than the globs of detergent, and stains seem to come out just fine. I would rather have a product that gets everything out and hope to see how Purex improves this product.

Earring Organizer

I just got my ears pierced last year so for my birthday and Christmas I was given a good amount of earrings…I suddenly needed somewhere to keep them all and my jewelry box drawer wasn’t cutting it.

When I saw Sharing the Wealth’s Earring Holder I knew I had to make one of my own and I’m so glad I did!

These vintage looking earring organizers are simple to make, but they are wonderfully feminine, extremely affordable to make, and work perfectly for keeping earrings all paired together.

All you need is a frame, lace, and a hot glue gun! I bought my frame from the dollar store and got to use the lace that my mother-in-law left in her sewing desk which I inherited when she passed away. Now I not only have a pretty piece in my bedroom, but it’s a fun little reminder of my mother-in-law.

All you need to do is take the back and glass out of the frame. Cut your lace to the width of the frame, pull it tight and hot glue it (without burning yourself) to the back inside of the frame:

I did have to glue the hanger to the top of my frame but made sure it was secure. Like I said, affordable, cute and feminine :)

Paper Plate Snowmen

We have yet to have anything even remotely resembling snow around here this winter, so we have to take snowmen in whatever form we can get them…

The other day, in searching for a quick, relatively clean craft I came up with paper plate snowmen. Both of my boys loved it and this is an activity that can be modified for any age from painting, to gluing, etc! I just used my trusty sticky tack to hold the plates to the doors and let my boys color away :)

As Americans, we are aware of the men and women who sacrifice so much for our country by serving in the military. Unless we are in a military family, however, we will never know how truly hard it is for those service men and women to be away from family for extended periods while putting their lives on the line. Nor will we ever know the struggles that their families go through, parenting alone, or not having mom or dad around. Not only do these families struggle while their loved one is away, but everyone in the family struggles greatly when their military hero returns...the adjustment is hard and since 2001, the divorce rate of military families has increased 42%.

Stuffed Animal Hammock

I don’t know how, but my children have accumulated ridiculous amounts of stuffed animals and I was fed up with having said animals being strewn about everywhere. Growing up I had a stuffed animal chain with pins to hold the animals up, but I wanted something a little simpler, and something I could make…hence the hammock!

My boys’ room doesn’t have much corner space due to doors and windows so I made two smaller hammocks…one for each corner by the window.

This hammock is a triangle, hung from the three corners. First, figure out how big you want your hammock to be by measuring from the corner of the room to where you want the hammock to extend to. You will need fabric, cord to hang the hammock by, and a sewing machine.

Cut your fabric to the desired size of your hammock. Then cut an inch or so off of each corner. (This is the fabric I used to make jammies for my hubby and boys for Christmas and it’s so fun having cute dinosaurs to look at underneath their animals :)

Fold each corner over 1/4 inch and stitch along that seam.

Now, take each side of your triangle and fold it over 1/4 inch. Then fold it over again to form the casing. Make sure the casing is wide enough for whatever cording you are going to use. Larger hammocks will need a thicker cord. Stitch along the casing as shown below leaving the ends open.

Attach one end of the cord to a safety pin and use the safety pin to feed the cord through the casing on all three sides of the hammock. Each point of the triangle will have some cord showing.

Use your stuffed animal hammock to measure where the nails will go on the wall and hammer those in. If you are making a large hammock you may want to use hooks or something heavy duty.

Hang up your cute hammock and adorn it with all the animals that you will no longer have to pick up constantly :).

Fork Bracelet

I am officially on Pinterest and while there fell in love with the bracelets I found here. Who knew forks could look so pretty?!

Anyhow, I wanted one of my own and decided to try making a fork bracelet…turns out it’s not terribly hard, though I admit I am lacking in all of the tools that could make my bracelet as pretty as the one that inspired it.

I took a regular fork (that obviously wouldn’t be too hard to bend), and used a hammer and pliers to pound the fork around a sturdy metal pole. This allowed the fork to be bent smoothly without as many kinks.

Once most of the fork was bent to the shape and size I wanted I bent the tines into the shape I wanted with my pliers and voila! All I had to do was use a dremmel tool to polish off the rough edges from the pliers and I had my own custom made bracelet made from, of all things, a fork.

Ergonomic Pen-UGLee Pen Review & Giveaway

For quite a while now I have seen several blogs review UGLee Pens and honestly I laughed at how truly “uglee” they are. However, after reading so many positive reviews, and the claims that these pens are super comfortable, I really wanted to test the UGLee Pens out for myself.

I was excited when the folks at UGLee Pen agreed to let me review their products. As soon as I took the pens out of the packaging I noticed how squishy and sticky the grip on this ergonomic pen is. This initially threw me off but as soon as I started writing with the UGLee Pen I could tell why the grip is so squishy. The pen literally grips your fingers so your fingers don’t have to work so hard and your hand is less strained while writing.
For me, the two true tests for these pens would be if they worked for those of us who are left-handed and if they truly helped young children hold the pens better as is claimed on the UGLee Pen website.

As for those of us who are left-handed, these pens write wonderfully! The ink flows smoothly and dries relatively quickly so my hand isn’t totally covered in ink by the time I’m done writing.

And as for whether these pens help children grip better, I had my 4 year old write with an UGLee Pen. Because of the grip, his hand was naturally positioned a lot better than it is with normal pens. I will definitely be interested to see how he does with these pens over time.

Make a Spin Drum for New Years

Is everyone ready to welcome in a new year? We are going to a party at my brother-in-law’s house and I figured we’d bring all the noise we could, so my boys and I made these cute little spin drums:

Inspired by Disney Family Fun, these little drums are easy to make, and you can make them from whatever you have lying around…we used a juice canister, the accompanying lid, cardboard, hot glue, yarn, beads, paint and sticks from outside for our drums. Look around to see what you already have on hand!

Cut the canister or container you are using to the width desired. I was able to make two drums from one juice canister.

Have your kids decorate their drums with paint, markers, glitter, etc.

Punch two holes in the sides of the drum and cut a hole to put the stick through the bottom. Use hot glue to secure the stick. String some yarn through the holes, making sure both ends are long enough to tie around a bead and still reach around to the drum as seen below.

Hot glue the lid of the canister or some cardboard to the front and back of the drum. Tie beads on to the yarn and let the noisy festivities begin!

Perfect Gift for New Moms: American Baby

Listerine Challenge Follow-Up

You may remember my post earlier this month talking about the Listerine Challenge that my family took. Now, you get to read all about our experience with the challenge :).

We were sent several products from Listerine and Reach for the purposes of this challenge. Some of those products were: floss, mouthwash and toothbrushes.

Since my boys are both too young to use any of the mouthwash products available, we focused on brushing and flossing every day with them. To make flossing easier, my husband and I used floss picks which made flossing between each of those little teeth a breeze and both boys were excited to practice flossing on their own. Every day they got to put stickers on their charts we got from Listerine and both of my boys did better at reminding me to help them brush and floss than I did at remembering! The stickers were a great incentive for them to want to brush and floss.

My husband and I did a fair job at remembering to brush, floss and rinse twice a day but once we got closer to the holidays I think we both just forgot to do the whole routine every morning. We did notice however that on days we didn’t brush, floss or rinse in the morning, our teeth felt considerably grosser at night! Now that we are home from traveling, we are going to try harder to get back into that routine.

I think that after doing this challenge, my entire family has been able to see the benefits of consistent oral care and I do hope that we will be able to make brushing, flossing and rinsing twice a day a good habit. I know that as long as we keep a sticker chart, my boys will be wonderful at reminding us to not only take care of their teeth but to take care of our own as well!

Decision Points Book Review

I have always had respect for George W Bush-specifically his character. Whether he did a good job politically is beyond any sort of discussion I want to have on this blog, but as a person, I think Bush is a good man.

That being said, my interest was piqued when given the chance to read his book Decision Points. In the first few chapters, I gained a greater understanding of George W Bush’s background and why he is the man he is today.

I also found it fascinating to read his side of the story in relation to events such as September 11th, Hurricane Katrina and the drama involved in his election. At times I was shocked by how different his side of the story is from the media’s or from my own memory of the events he discussed.

I found the political aspects of his book to be somewhat interesting, though it eventually felt like the book had become a long justification for everything that went wrong, while being sure to point out everything that went right while he was in office. My father is very open about his political viewpoints and I couldn’t help but feel his influence as someone who no longer thinks very highly of Bush or the role he played in office and I’m sure that played a large role in how I viewed this book.

All in all, I enjoyed the chance to get to know President Bush a little better by seeing his presidency through his own perspective, though, at times it did feel like he was trying too hard to prove his point and to validate every decision he made as president.

This experience has made me want to read memoirs of other presidents to gain a greater understanding of the men who led our country and the experiences they had while doing so.

Just have your kids string some red & green Fruit Loops onto a pipe cleaner and twist the ends together to make a festive wreath that the kids can enjoy (especially the devouring part after!).

Pipe-cleaner Candy Canes

I know Christmas is coming and time is definitely running out for cute Christmas crafts to do with your kids, but if you need a quick activity during the winter break, make some cute candy canes with some pipe-cleaners and beads :)

My boys got very into this. My 4 year old understood the pattern concept right away, and my 2 year old got to work on his hand-eye coordination. Plus, these are super cheap to make and look really cute on the tree!

Just cut your pipe-cleaners in half, twist one end around a bead and have your kiddos put the rest of the beads on. When the pipe cleaner is almost full twist the end around the last bead and voila!

Photo Transfer Ornaments

If you’re looking for a last minute, meaningful gift for someone in your life, make them a photo transfer ornament. These are fairly simple to make and can definitely leave a lasting impression!

I made this ornament for my aunt using a picture of Munich I found online because she took me there just before I got married. On the back I transferred the words Merry Christmas…We love you!

To make your own ornaments, just follow the directions for Mod Podge photo transfer in my Light Switch Cover post, or my Popsicle Stick Puzzle post using a small wooden disc you can find for super cheap at Hobby Lobby or other such stores.
