How to Add a Top Sidebar to a Minima Stretch Template for New Blogger?

This blog is using Minima Stretch template. I have customized the look of this blog a lot. Now I want to add a top sidebar to this template. How can that be done? Actually it is not so hard than I thought. The following steps describe how I've accomplished this task.

Always backup your template before you do anything. Go to http://www.blogger.com/home. Click on a down arrow that will show more options. See the screenshot below:
A list of choices will show up. Click on Template. See the screenshot below:
It will lead you to the next screen. On the upper right corner, click on Backup/Restore. See the screenshot below:
Next a popup window will appear. Click on an orange button Download full template to save your file to your PC. See the screenshot below:
After that close the popup window. Next click on Edit HTML. See the screenshot below:
Another popup window will open. It will allow you to edit your html. See the screenshot below:
Next hold Ctrl and hit F at the same time to bring up a search bar. Type #sidebar-wrapper { in the text field to find the following code:

Next add the following code above it. See it in red below:

How to Redirect an Old Feedburner Feed to a New Feed?

Lately I changed my blog title, but then my Feedburner feed name doesn't reflect the new blog title name. Instead of feeds.feedburner.com/LearningMyFirstOnlineBusiness I wanted to change it to be feeds.feedburner.com/MeaningfulBlog. How can I change it without losing my existing feed?

There are three steps that I need to accomplish this task:

First I need to burn a new Feedburner feed using my original blog feed as my source. I name it MeaningfulBlog

Second I need to update the source of my old Feedburner feed (used to be my original blog feed) to be feeds.feedburner.com/MeaningfulBlog (my new feed). Make sure you save the change.

Third I need to go back to my old Feedburner feed, click on "Delete Feed..." It says
You are about to permanently delete the feed: Learning My First Online Business. If you complete this action, your feed and ALL associated statistical history and service benefits will be deleted. You have the option for this feed address to permanently redirect to the currently configured source feed.
Make sure you tick the box next to "With permanent redirection". After that hit Delete Feed button.

So now my old feed, feeds.feedburner.com/LearningMyFirstOnlineBusiness, is permanently redirected to my new feed, feeds.feedburner.com/MeaningfulBlog. I checked it out and it works.

How to Migrate Joomla! 1.0.x to Joomla! 1.5.x?

I am still using Joomla 1.0.15 for one of my sites. Now I am thinking to upgrade it to Joomla! 1.5.x. The reason being is Joomla! 1.0.x is no longer supported. Also hackers can hack the older version of Joomla! easily. So it is time for me to move on. I know it is not easy but I have to do it...I will write down the steps along the way. Here they are...

Backup all my files of Joomla! 1.0.15 to my desktop through FTP
Login to my hosting cPanel
Click on phpMyAdmin to export my database to my desktop
Download Joomla! 1.5.24 from Download Joomla! to my desktop
Download the Migrator component to my desktop
Install the Migrator component to my existing Joomla! 1.0.15 site
Login to my Joomla! 1.0.15 backend
Click on Components/Migrator
Then click on Create Migration SQL File
Next click on Start Migration >>
Then click on Download to save SQL Dump from my Joomla! 1.0.15 to my desktop
Next make a clean Joomla 1.5.24 installation in a new folder for instance internet
Then upload Joomla! 1.5.24 to http://www.mywebsite.com/internet
Next type that url in my browser to run the installtion
Then choose my language and click on Next
Next check whether everything is okay if not it should be corrected and click on Next
Then read GNU General Public License and click on Next
Next go to my server and create a new database. Jot down the username and password for the next step.
Then fill in Database Type, Host Name, Username, Password, and Database Name and click on Next
Next fill in FTP user, FTP Password, FTP Root Path for FTP Configuration and click on Next
Then for Main Configuration fill in Site Name, I leave Your Email, Admin Username, Admin Password, and Confirm Admin Password blank.
Next I have to tick next to the Load Migration Script option, fill in the old table prefix jos_, leave the Old Site Encoding the way it is, browse the Joomla 1.0.x migration dump that I downloaded earlier, tick next to This script is a Joomla! 1.0 migration script, and hit Upload and execute button
Then I see "Migration successful. Press Next to continue". So I just click on Next
Finally I have to remove installation folder

After that I find out my Joomla! 1.0.x theme is not compatible with Joomla! 1.5.x. Also my images, my favicon, all my components are gone. So I have to work hard to get them back.

P.S. I try to migrate to Joomla! 1.7.x directly but it will not allow me to do so. So instead I have to migrate to Joomla! 1.5.x instead. My next post will be How to Upgrade Joomla! 1.5.x to Joomla! 1.7.x. So stay tune for that...

They have been maintaining this campaign for a period of 6 months now at a cost of only $100 per month, in contrast to the $1000 per month they were previously spending on PPC marketing.

Another downfall to PPC is that when you stop paying for PPC advertising, your listings disappears and so does the traffic they bring. With the recent move by numerous PPC search engines to raise their minimum bid requirements, the charges for keywords are only going to increase over time as far more advertisers join the market, bid higher prices for each keyword and fight for the significant #1 position in the paid search listing results. With PPC advertising, it's a bidding war that favours advertisers with greater budgets.

In most cases, once you have good positioning in the regular search results via SEO, you will continually receive free traffic. It may require some minor adjustments from time to time but all in all brings in consistent free traffic so long as people are searching for your products or services. You are not held hostage to having to continuously throw money at search engines to maintain your listings.

SEO has to be the foundation of your online marketing strategy simply because in the long run, the rewards of SEO will far outweigh anything else you do.

Are Search Engine Robots Useful?

Sometimes referred to as 'spiders' or crawlers, automated search engine robots seek out web pages for the user. Just how do they accomplish this and is this of importance? What is the real purpose of these robots?

Robots actually have the same basic functionality that earlier browsers had. Just like these early browsers, search engine robots do not have the ability to do certain things. Robots cannot get past password protected areas. They do not understand frames, Flash movies, nor Images or JavaScript. Even if you use a robot, you have to click the buttons on your website. They can cease to function while using JavaScript navigation or when indexing a dynamically generated URL. A search engine robot retrieves data and finds information and links on the web.

Spiders are able to determine the content of your page by looking at the visible text, the HTML code, and links. Based on the words it finds, the spider determines what the site is about using a complex algorithm to determine what is and isn't important. Spiders also collect links from websites to follow later, which allows them to effectively hop from site to site to site. Since the entire Internet is made up of links between websites, the robots use them to make their way through the Internet as they search.

These robots read the pages on your website by visiting your page and looking at the text that is visible on the page, and then looks at the source code tags such as title tags, meta tags and others. They look at the hyperlinks on your page. From these links, the search engine robot can determine what your page is about. Each search engine has its own algorithm to determine what is important. Information is indexed and delivered to the search engine's database according to how the robot has been set up through the search engine.

Search engines don't update instantly from moment to moment. No, their database updates can vary in the exact timing. However, once you're in there, the bots will make a point to visit you frequently so as to pick up on updates and the like. If your site is down at the time the bot may not be able to update your site in the search engine database, so do keep that in mind. So, robots may be scary things in movies, but as you can see, as far as the Internet goes they're nothing but helpful tools to guide us in going from site to site. Embrace them, learn how to help them be more efficient, and work with them to get your web site highly-ranked so that you can maximize your visitors.

A good CTR(Click Through Rate) can often be the difference between having a successful online business or just scraping by a living online. So what is a good CTR?

One of most important things one needs to understand when asking this question is the fact that Google separates their networks into the Google Search Network and Google Content Network, and CTR will vary greatly depending on which network is being referred to.

Simply put, the Search network is when you use the Google form to search for keywords. Ads that result from those searches are listed at the top 3 positions and down the right hand side. Ads in the top 3 positions will get CTRs in the 20% range or even more, whilst ads at the bottom of the page will usually drop substantially all the way down to 1% or less.

Having a good ad position for a given search result is quite obviously the most important factor when trying to achieve a good CTR. In most cases, a high position is also more important than good ad copy.

Now, when looking at the Content Network, CTRs take on a completely different meaning. CTRs achieved on Google's partner sites in the Content Network are many times lower than similar the figures you will see on the Search Network. Figures of 0.05% would be catastrophic on the Search Network, however, this is not too bad for a Content Network result.

But these low percentages are not the full story. The amount of traffic being generated by the Content Network far outweighs these low CTRs. It is still possible to achieve incredible results using the Content Network.

However, you should always aim for having a high CTR within the Google search engine overall. If your general overall CTR is less than 1%, Google will deem your ads as being of low quality and you will end up getting "Google slapped" (which is where Google will penalise you with an ever-increasing minimum CPC(Cost Per Click)) because your ad does not attract enough clicks.

Try to keep your ads in the top positions, and your CTRs should always remain in the high single or even double digits - more than enough to keep Google happy and reduce your minimum CPC.
