Our most recent show for The Beehive Society had the theme of Party Mixtape. Each artist submitted their favorite party song and all the songs were jumbled up then delved out to a different artist. I got Do What U Want a duet by artists/singer/song writers R. Kelly & Lady Gaga.

Most of you that know me, know that I adore all the weird shit Lady Gaga slaps on her body and calls fashion. So of course I was thrilled for this selection. Below is a sneak peek into my brain and how I work and mix digital and traditional tools/supplies.

Food Diary of Paris, France

I stayed in Paris for over two weeks and devoured anything that crossed my path! It should be said that I didn’t just eat 1 singular baguette. It would have been silly to draw the actual number of baguettes I ate. Two baguettes per day adds up quick.

Above are some concept sketch icons for Spellstorm. We had an amazing UI artist who had a tall order of work ahead of him so we all pitched in where we could to help each another out. A few winter highlights from the Winter is Coming show that I curated a month ago. The night turned out to be a really wonderful event with a great turn out. It was so exciting to see so many of my friends get little red dots next to their names! Congrats to all the sales that occurred that evening. Chicken wit' Swagger

A few months ago my friends mentioned opening up a food truck that would serve up good ol' fashion chicken and waffles. After wiping up my slobber, we joked about the various ways he and his wife could style their truck. After my concept of a sexy pin up chicken was declined, Justin & Danielle were still open to me creating art for their new business. Four months later The Waffle Roost is hitting the road and I couldn't be prouder or hungrier. Check out below to see how King Chicken was created and what sorts of work went into creating a food truck! Three cheers for a long reign from King Chicken!

It's the first show I'm ever curating (and also a part of)! Here are some things that can occur this evening:
1. Everything goes completely wrong which leads to a fantastic and entertaining evening for those attending.
2. Everything goes amazingly well, we sell out, people eat amazing fried food and it leads to a fantastic and entertaining for all those attending.

Basically it sounds like a pretty good deal for those of you that show up, huh? So I really think you guys should show up, support the local artists and buy some fantastic art! Also The Waffle Roost will be making a guest appearance and delving out the most delightful chicken and waffles! You really have no reason to say no, so I'll see you there!

Sketchy Pitchy Friends of Mine

A while back my friends and I put together a show pitch, Switcheroo Sam. It's about a trio of friends, led by rambunctious little Sam who has a bit of an oddity. After an electrical storm Sam is able to communicate with the dead via her head gear. These were the fruits of our labors.

Unfortunately nothing came from it, but from this process we found out how well we write together and best of all, we discovered how weird the 3 of us are around each other. I get it...the world just isn't ready for the 10th, 11th, and 12th circles of hell that our brains could create. Your move PBS....

Just a friendly little insect from the world of Spellstorm. Reavers; they were part of a construct event we put together. These little guys were meant to be part machine, part mosquito, and part wasp. I even made sure to design them with nice long fingernails so they can help you reach that itch you just can't get to!

Mysteries of Mobile Game Artist Revealed!!!

Basically this is the day to day of a successful Game Artist:
1. Show up to work on time
2. Go through your assignments and work like a beast for 8 hours
3. Eat lunch, dinner and any snacks your awesome startup company has generously provided you
4. Finally, work nicely with others throughout the day

While all of this transitioning has been happening in my life, I nearly forgot to post any work I had from this game. Above is a sneak peek at my process for Spellstorm, the last game I wrapped up as the Lead Artist/Vis Dev Director. Please take notice of the very technical hand written notes that I have provided for your educational benefit!

Alright, so there are no actual mysteries to reveal here about social game artists... sorry. However there are things I gained and painstakingly learned while working my way up the startup ladder from Production Artist to Lead Artist:

1. Being a production artist teaches you how to work within technical & time constraints
2. Being on an art heavy game with very few artists can teach you amazing time management skills
3. You'll learn to design within context (aka don't render out a toenail of a beast if the game being developed is primarily for an iphone)
4. Learning about disciplines outside of your own (i.e. Product, Engineering, QA, Community, etc.) make you a better communicator & team player
5. I can't stress this one enough. Don't be a dick to people, this is a tiny industry. The person you cross can be the person across the table interviewing you at the next company...
6. Last but not least, be at least 2 of these three things: Amazing to work with, Amazingly talented, or Amazingly on time.

Rewatched the first and second season of GIRLS while working. Hannah Horvath has the greatest quotes. I just wanted to get this out of my system before moving on. I know, I know...for you uber fans out there, Hannah doesn't get that crazy ass haircut until the last episode. Whatever, it's endearing because it makes her look like a Monchhichi.

The Dungeons & Dragons show was a great success. Thanks everyone for coming out, I really appreciate it! I had such a great time AND I totally got a red dot! Above you'll see a mash up of my work process for this particular piece. This type of documenting usually doesn't occur. I'm not entirely sure what came over me and why I photographed each step. Maybe it was my way of doing a traditional version of Ctrl+S incase I messed it all up along the way? Hmm regardless, here it is! Happy St. Patty's Day!

Some concept art for the most recent game I'm working on for Tinyco. So long are the days of concepting fat cave men and wide eyed animals. Spellstorm has arrived...well in most countries aside from the US. But soon my pretties....soon. These are concept thumbnails for hippogriffs & harpies. My amazing group of friends recently worked their asses off in the Tough Mudder Half Marathon. Everyone made it out alive, limbs intact and I couldn't be prouder! Never before seen Tiny Village concept art! While perusing the archives of Tiny Village I came across some lil' gems that didn't quite make the cut. Below are some story intro paintings I worked on with Candice Ciesla as well as my early concepts for play spaces and idol gods.

And finally, all you Tiny Village fans came terribly close to idolizing a coconut instead of a giant rock head. We originally wanted the coconut to fall from a tree to distract the trex from gulping up Rupert & Regina, but in the end magic and mysticism won out!

Well...that was a nice trip down memory lane. Come on now, take my hand and we'll return to present time!
