Busy..busy...busy...Mikhail have finalized all his layouts, however, Scott is still busy with his Virtual World. Hopefully, we can fully introduce a trial version of this interactive chat world and Mechtechs gaming at the upcoming Komikon event on November.

I made new designs for standees to be placed at the internet shops so that we will be able to attract more fans and viewers. Each standee is conceptualized to introduce each character. These will also be used during the upcoming events. We have planned to giveaway stickers and flyers as well to promote our projects.

Finally, we are done with all the layouts...23 pages to be exact. Mikhail did it. We are just waiting for Scott's approval. It's been a hectic week for us preparing for the prelude to the Animahenasyon 2008 event held in Eastwood, Manila. IAS was one of the sponsors so we had the opportunity to promote Mechtechs. We gave away t-shirts and flyers. The photos above were taken during the event.

The Owner of Molten Mecha

Hopper is the owner of Molten Mecha. He is an old mecha military jarhead from way back. He had so many pieces of himself shot off and replaced with metal bionics that he resembles one of his own mechas. As a military mecha-pilot, Hopper wired his brain directly into the mecha's computer systems, so that he and the machine would operate together as one. As a result, he suffers psychotic flashbacks from time to time. His employees prefer him to stay away from the shop - especially when he's having one of his flashbacks and possesses sort of some heavy machinery.

Godfrey made a design and submitted it to Scott. Scott liked it but wanted a few revisions made.

Scott's comment was:

"I think we have too much emphasis on his mechanical parts. We can see portions of a mechanical arm but it needs to be proportioned with the normal human anatomy. Let's make maybe a cable going into a band around his leg to suggest it is mechanical."

So revisions were made until the final version was drawn by Mikhail and colored by Mark. And so finally it was approved. Meet Hopper, the owner of Molten Mecha.

Mechtechs joins Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. Convention

Mechtechs will get its first introduction in the Philippines on November 12-16, 2008 at the Animation Council of the Pihlippines, Inc.'s 2nd Animahenasyon 2008 Pinoy Animation Festival. This event is a showcase of unique, Filipino-made animation.

As a Mechtechs promotion, we will be handing out Mechtechs flyers that I created due to rush requirements and the artists' heavy workload. I decided to use Holly as focus character since she is the fans' favorite character and we have a lot of male viewers (you know what I mean...sexy, alluring Holly will be a good attraction). We will also be giving away t-shirts as a joint promotion with the ACP, Inc.

New Colored Characters!

Finally, I got a hold of the busy man, Scott. It's his birthday today, BTW! (Sorry for broadcasting it, Scott!) So, I took the chance to greet and disturb him. He's been busy with other major projects, so it took a long time to get approvals. But, finally, I squeezed in to get the new colored characters checked. As promised, here is Treble in color. And here's the revised Russ, although there's an additional revision to change his shoes to something more hi-tech or not-too-ordinary shoes.

Meanwhile, Mikhail is continuing all his pages and Scott wants him to finish everything before he looks at it for revisions or approvals. It's a long process, but we are getting there.

Virtual World Conference

The MechTechs virtual world is a pet project of Scott Ownbey. It is a flash animation that combines a social network and a virtual world. Once you log in, you can choose your own avatar and use the arrow keys to navigate you around Planet Cleveland. Here, you will feel the atmosphere of being in another world. You can enjoy walking, moving around and even flying while chatting with other Mechtechs fans.

Planet Cleveland is a rotting, junkyard at the ass-end of the galaxy. Cleveland used to be the industrial powerhouse of the galactic economy; producing star liners, battle cruisers and gleaming armies of giant Mecha-warriors that were the envy of every other civilized race in the universe. That was long time ago. Since then, planet-wide warfare, a few galactic financial recessions and corporate downsizing and outsourcing to the new, cheaper labor markets of the Galactic Rim economies has reduced the planet to a decayed and forgotten backwater, covered in continent-sized scrapyards and long ago-abandoned assembly lines, and inhabited mainly by roving bands of outlaws, mutants and scavengers.

Despite all this, though, people still come to Cleveland, home of the intergalactic's famous custom-mecha fabrication shop, Molton Mecha. With a starting price of 23 billion dollars, you can blow up a planet in style and still have enough Utonium to transport 45 tons of the most advanced weaponry across the known solar universe.

Genghis: Molton Mecha's Pet

Genghis is the shop pet and guard dog. He is one of Jeter's robot creations. Unfortunately, Jeter didn't tell anyone that he cannibalized most of the parts from some military surplus stuff that was lying around the shop to build Genghis and that the pet dog's core AI programming comes from the guidance systems of a planetbuster mega-bomb. Genghis' limiter controls work most of the time. When they don't, he wants to kill everything and anything, except Holly, who he'd rather fond of.

Genghis was first made by Godfrey when he submitted sample of his artwork way back a year ago or so. "It was almost there", Scott said. "However, it looks much like its from the Jetsons. So Andrew made his version of Genghis but Scott asked him to do some changes that will resemble the first one. So Andrew revised it and came up with better Genghis which was then approved by Scott with just a revision to add some teeth and some wiring connected to his legs. As soon as it was done, Mark colored it. And so here's our pet Genghis.

2nd Day of the Month

How many days left? Argh! It's all pressure for us now..since we only have 2 months to rush things out! Of course we wouldn't want to sacrifice the quality of our project.

It's been quite hectic the past few days due to storyboards projects, however, the guys still fit Mechtechs on the agenda. Godfrey is done with another revision of the villain for the teaser. Andrew is doing sketches of Da Monet as Scott wasn't really satisfied with his Da Monet. He's definitely having a hard time with that character. I think it is more of the fashion statement of Da Monet where Andrew is having difficulty getting the concept. Well, aside from Da Monet, Andrew is tasked on sketching a motorcycle for the layout and a Mecha for the teaser. Mikhail started to sketch our teaser for upcoming events. I've posted a rough, unfinished sketch to get you excited for the final drawing.

Treble: The Techie Guy

Treble is an African American guy who is into hi-tech stuff and latest gadgets. Out of all the submissions, Godfrey did a good job. The wardrobe looked great as commented by Scott, although the body type was too skinny and similar to Jeter. He is a cool brother. He is the audio expert so Scott wanted to put gadgets on him that suggests his character.

Andrew had some difficulty drawing Treble because he was not an ordinary guy. He tried different versions of hair for him to make him looked cool; from corn rolls (as first suggested by Scott) to Afro hair and dreadlocks. But it all comes down to a "bandana" covered hair.

I'm giving you guys a little suspense for the colored version. Mark is still working on it.

The countdown is putting a lot of pressure on me now. Progress on MechTechs has slowed because we have lots of storyboards projects that must get done first. Scott have been busy too with other projects, so I have limited time to communicate with him regarding approvals. Yesterday, it was a good thing that he spared a little time for me. So far, Godfrey, was assigned to revise the main villain to be more futuristic and to have more of a blend of modern elements. So far the submissions of the evil characters were exemplary and very detailed, however, they had more of an old-school Chinese look. This character will also be used for the teaser, so he needs to be done ASAP since I have only a little more than a month left before the Comic-Con Manila. Although the character hasn't been approved yet, I'm letting you view the proposed evil characters now to see how Godfrey's work-in-progress.

Teaser Layout for Comic Con Manila 2008

We have moved forward with layouts since we're behind on our time frame. Here's the teaser for the first issue. I'm not posting all the layout sketches because you need something to look forward to, right? Mikhail started with several layouts and we had several revisions made. Some of the layouts were approved. As we go along with this project, our Creative Director, Scott sees more ways to improve it. So we keep adding more elements and details and removing the unnecessary stuff. Along with these layouts, Mikhail is tasked to do another teaser for the upcoming Comic-Con Manila 2008 and Komikon 2008 to be held in Manila, Philippines. We plan to give away posters and postcards and some stickers at these events.

Lotsa Revisions

Today I got a lot of instructions from our Creative Director, Scott Ownbey. And a big "OPPPSSS" on Russ; unfortunately Andrew needs to revise his face to look like the old face we used for the Comic-Con 2008 postcard. Andrew needs to add some techie stuff also so that he won't look too "ordinary". I'll soon post the final Russ. Aside from Russ, Andrew is finishing some elements for another character, Treble, and doing a very minor revision on the cute pet dog, Genghis. Watch out for those characters especially Genghis. He's actually my favorite aside from Jeter & Holly. The above sketch is a teaser of our pet.
On the other hand, layouts were also started by Mikhail but revisions are being done now for four layouts. Hopefully it's done by tonight so we can move on to more layouts. We're really behind on our time line. More updates coming soon.

Meet Russ, RJ's cousin

Russ is a good ol' boy. He's a southern redneck who got the job at Molton Mecha because he is R.J.'s cousin, although he is a brilliant fabrication master as well. Russ does great work, but he likes to take his time which drives R.J. crazy. Russ hangs out with Jeter all the time at work where they are always creating little robots that do the most useless jobs.

Russ wasn't in any design submissions from our artists. I guess this was because of his character being the good guy with a warm, likable personality. I think our artists prefer drawing the tough characters with more challenging descriptions. Andrew was tasked with creating Russ with the above mentioned character guide. Scott thought the first sketch of Russ was "excellent." However, minor revisions were needed since Russ is human. The elf ears were eliminated, a sleeveless jacket was added and the long sleeved undershirt was rolled up. Revisions were made but it took time because the face was not consistent.

Mikhail was then asked to tighten up the sketch of Russ with the revisions in mind, so that Andrew could move on with the other characters. Mikhail drew three faces to be reviewed by Scott. But with so much work on hand, it took Scott some time to look at the sketches. So to move on, I posted it on the Deviant Art site and asked for help from the viewers. Unfortunately, when Scott saw the faces, he was not satisfied because they were different from what was first approved. So there were four more done before we got an almost-finished Russ. Since we were pressed for time, the 4th sketch was used for the San Diego Comic-Con Mechtechs postcards even though there were revisions that needed to be made to his face. Andrew continued to revise it and finally got what we were looking for. The first color version of Russ was used at Comic-Con. The coloring of the approved Russ was tweaked by Mark Taduran.

The Making of the Crazed Designer

Jeter has finally been created. After several revisions from the facial features to the colors, Jeter has been approved for release.

Jeter is the crazed Mecha designer and engineer of Molton Mecha shop. He likes to pack customers' Mechas with a few spur-of-the-moment and highly experimental 'extras' - ejector seats, self-destruct buttons, anti-matter powered transmission systems, rocket-powered jump packs, etc. - usually without remembering to tell the customers about it. He's a genius, although possibly an unintentionally homicidal one. He dreams of being the one to build the ultimate Mecha, and has been scribbling designs for years. Requires close supervision by RJ, to prevent him killing off their customer base.

Godfrey's submission was too comical but the idea was there. Andrew's sketch of Jeter was almost there from the very beginning. However, Scott needed to see some tweaks on his features. It became a rush assignment for Andrew because Jeter was to be used for the Comic Con teaser. A different Jeter was used for the postcards but minor improvements were made. And so Andrew created a new face for Jeter which was revised twice and finally approved. The colors also were revised and the approved one was colored with light earth tones, more of khaki and brown. The approved colors was done by Mok Vivas, the other colorist for Mechtechs.

98 Days To Go!

It's been a depressing day for me today! I don't have an artist! Can you imagine that? Mikhail's suppose to do additional layouts today but he's down in bed, sick with the flu. Andrew is sick too.

We're still on our way to improving Jeter and Russ' faces. Jeter is almost approved. And we have another character being developed, Treble. But Andrew is having quite a hard time sketching him. Scott sent references so hopefully Andrew will get it this time.

Mikhail started his layouts last Sunday, but I'm still waiting for Scott's approval.

Argh! What a day! As for me, at least I had time to do my other jobs for HR, evaluations and company ID renewal.

The Only Woman of Molton Mecha

Holly, the only woman in the Molten Mecha crew, is a trainee mechanic. R.J. doesn't approve of her. Not because she's a woman or because she's young and attractive. Not because she's a slacker, but because, as everyone knows, humans just don't have what it takes to make good Mechtechs. She's determined to prove him wrong.

Holly's character description, according to Scott, is hot and sexy. She has a funky, short hairstyle. The first thought for her hair color was blonde with pink highlights, but lime green was more unique and better for her character according to colorist, Mark T. In addition to the funky hair color, she has piercings and tattoos.

With this in mind, Andrew sketched his version of Holly and it was approved by Scott. Scott loved how Andrew drew Holly's face because it was very true to the anime-style. Minor revisions were needed to change her outfit, giving her daisy duke, low rider shorts that slightly reveal the sexy thong she's wearing underneath. Andrew sketched a second Holly carrying a big metal piece of equipment, however, he was not satisfied with this choice and decided to make another version with her carrying a big multi-purpose gun.

The colors were basically Mark's idea of how he visualizes Holly.
"I sent a reference to Scott and he liked the hair color of the character, so I decided to make her hair green. It's more funky and manga-ish. I chose orange and green because they're a perfect combo..fresh and funky..yet girly...the neutral colors of her other accessories also contrast these colors."

105 Days To Go

Finally, I got to talk to Scott. Good news with regards to Comic Con 2008. There was a lot of interest in Mechtechs and we got more fans to sign up for the website. On the other hand, Scott needs more character studies from Andrew and Andrew is tied up with a storyboard job. Mikhail also needs to change his style to create more of a manga feel for his characters. Both artists are no where to be found.

Only 105 days to go and we still need to develop eight characters and revise faces for Jeter, Russ and Holly. Andrew is tasked with developing more designs for each character so that Scott can choose the best. I'm just thinking positively that we will reach our deadline, but I'm a little doubtful. We are way behind our target date per my timetable. We should be polishing all of the characters in tight pencils by August 2 and doing layouts by the following week. At this point, I don't see that happening. Hopefully, the colors will be approved quickly so we can squeeze cut time on their deadlines and save time overall.

Now, I'll delegate tasks through email and wait (patiently) for the artists to do them.

PANIC ATTACK!!!

It's been days since Scott and I communicated and I'm going crazy now. Getting really panicky I should say. How many days do we have left?! Oh my! I've got a lot of pending sketches and pencils for his approval, but I don't think he received my emails about them. He was too busy with the Comic-Con 2008 event, I guess. Now, I'm crossing my fingers for his call.

Andrew is done with all of his character sketches and everything's up for approval. Mikhail did his Jeter and Russ face studies because Scott asked him to revise the face to look more goofy for Jeter and add more character to Russ' face. So we're left hanging on that. However, I thought of a great idea to help him out. I posted it on the Deviant Art site and asked for comments from our viewers there. And I'm excited about the outcome. The Making of R.J.

He is a big Harley type, part human, part alien guy, although, he is more human than alien. He is the Molton Mecha shop’s frontman. He spends most of his time trying to get his staff to stop goofing around and actually do some work and lamenting on the almost lost art of classic echa construction.

A design was submitted by Godfrey during his tryout and this became part of the model for drawing R.J. According to Scott, the body proportion was great and the outfit looked good. It was then sketched in blue lines by Andrew following Godfrey's drawing of Godfrey of the body proportions. However, the face was changed to match the one Scott submitted. After the blue lines were finished, Scott immediately approved Andrew’s design and it was then turned over to Mikhail for tight penciling. Soon, it was done, but the arm of R.J. needed to be revised because Mikhail mistakenly drew it with mechanical arms. With two revisions in mind (the arm and the wrench needed to be bigger), the final pencils were completed.
After the last revision was approved, R.J. was sent to Mark Taduran for coloring. Since R.J. is part alien, we thought he should have different colors for his skin tone. The color of his skin tone needed to be appropriate for his character - no green because he might look like the Hulk and definitely no purple because he might end up looking like Barney! We tried red, but Scott didn’t approve of it. Instead, it was changed to a bluish-gray.

The final R.J. was introduced at the San Diego Comic-Con 2008! You will see more of R.J. as Andrew sketches his different facial expressions and pose guides.

MechTechs teaser artwork

Tease me...tease me...tease me...or tease you, I should say. That's what we did at the San Diego Comic-Con 2008. Our Creative Director, Scott Ownbey, handed out 20,000 teaser postcards to comic, anime and manga fans. We took advantage of this event to introduce Mechtechs to the crowd and get the fans excited about seeing the final comic which will be launched (hopefully) in November 2008.

The main goal was to introduce the mecha and some of the characters. After the mecha head was penciled and approved, Mark T. was asked to do his magic. Mark decided to make the mecha look different from than usual and picked very out-of-the ordinary colors.

"I want the mecha to look more fresh and "manga" in color. It should not be the usual white, blue and red. I thought of golden yellow accentuated by purple and hot pink. I had been experimenting and that, for me, was the best tri-color combo - a bit playful, not too serious combination. I also took into consideration the outfits of the characters. They should both compliment and contrast the color of the mecha," said Mark Taduran, the head colorist of for the MechTechs project.

And so it was approved with Scott commenting that it was an interesting color choice for the mecha head.

Interview with IAS & Mechtechs Head Colorist

I knew that Mark Anthony Taduran would be chosen as the lead colorist for Mechtechs. Not that the other colorists are not good. They're actually all great, that's why Scott had a hard time choosing, but Mark knows how to play with colors really well and he's good at knowing exactly how Scott wants the colors to look. My prediction was accurate and Mark was chosen with just one submission of artwork.

I recently had the opportunity to pull Mark away from his work and have him answer a few quick questions.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.
A: My family calls me Boboy or Anthony. In Singapore they call me Marko or Markovah. To my college friends, I am known as Em. I can be your most loyal friend but then, can be your greatest enemy. I'm super moody, almost bipolar.

Q: Where are you from?
A: I am from Iriga City (Philippines) where the Filipino Superstar "Nora Aunor" was born. I am Bicolano, but I don't like "Bicol express" too much.

Q: Were you always an artist? Who or what inspired you to be an artist?
A: I started drawing when I was about three years old. My uncle, who was a carpenter and a painter, taught me how to draw a bird. My mother taught me how to draw a woman. I was really inspired by animated cartoons like Rainbow Brite and Thundercats. I copied and drew them. Then, my bestfriend who is also an artist, influenced me to collect comics both local and international in my grade school days. Most of my inspirations are comic artists like J.D. Sto. Domingo, Michael Turner, Joe Madureira and Carlo Vergara among others.

Q: What are your favorite subjects to draw?
A: The Human Figure.

Q: As an artist, what other forms of expression do you indulge in? Who influenced you the most as an artist?
A: I usually draw and color comics, although I used to do graphic design for posters, print ads and other advertising collaterals. My greatest influences are Michael Turner and Joe Mad. Or I should say, they are my idols.

Q: If you were a superhero, what superpowers would you have? Why?
A: I want to have Telekinesis and Telepathy just like Jean Grey in X-men, because I love her.

Q: Who are your favorite characters in Mechtechs?
A: Holly and Hopper

Q: What Mecha would you create if your were RJ? Describe it.
A: I create a mecha with an armor or a battle suit that transforms into a jet. It would be slim and agile and it would move like an "Evangelion" robot. It must be dominantly glossy white like a Mac cover with glossy, ebony black parts. It must have an off-proportioned gigantic right arm that releases torpedos or lasers. It should somehow be recognizable as a female mecha.

Q: What art style do you use the most aside from the style you use at work?
A: I use the comic style in drawing and the painted anime style in coloring.

Mechtechs Colorists

The next phase for MechTech was to choose among the colorist aspirants who will be fit to render the teasers, promotional materials and comicbook series. Announcements and invites were sent once again to the Manila Studio artists to create their own interpretation of MechTechs colors following the color guide provided by Creative Director Scott Ownbey. Big props to Neil Cervantes, Malaya De Guzman, Samuel Donato, Mark “Mok” Vivas, Sandeson Gonzaga, Mark Anthony Taduran, Christian Dave Gonzales, Giovanni Tengco & Timothy Terrenal for all their creative masterpieces.

Based on the guide, Scott’s idea was to render an overall look which offers a low-tech industrial look with lots of rich earth sepia tones and dramatic use of cool colors that will predominate the look in the visual development of the comicbook.

After another tough analysis of all the submissions, Scott finally selected the best of the best to render the MechTech comicbook. Amongst the aspirants, 2 Marks became Scott’s favorite: Mark Anthony Taduran was chosen to be the head colorist and Mark “Mok” Vivas to be his assistant.

Godfrey Escota - The Villain Penciler

GODFREY ESCOTA, 26 years old

Godfrey is one of the artists who submitted designs for MechTechs. Scott was definitely impressed with his work and he has been chosen to draw the villains for Mechtechs.

Let me introduce you to Godfrey.

He is currently one of the team leaders in the penciler department of Interactive Art Services' Manila studio. He is one very talented guy. Aside from drawing, he does digital painting and sculpting too. He is called the studio clown because there is never a dull moment with this guy - unless he is hungry - because he can sing and dance very well.

Godfrey is a Manila boy, born and raised. His love of drawing people is derived from his enjoyment of comics at an early age. In college he took up architecture to combine his love for drawing with a possible career. As he became more involved in architecture, he was able to keep his love of drawing people alive by creating little comic strips. However, he had to stop doodling and concentrate on his studies to finish his courses.

When asked what supernatural powers he'd choose, Godfrey happily commented that he'd like the power to stop time. He would use this superpower much like Nakamura of the TV show "Heroes." While Godfrey appreciates the tangible results of long hours spent perfecting a work of art, he also finds books on the human mind especially interesting.

Godfrey has been inspired by comic book artists Travis Charest, Jim Lee and Frank Cho. Their work led him to develop his own clean lines and dynamic drawing style. Additionally, Todd McFarlane’s fun, quirky artistry and keen business sense has given Godfrey the desire to open his own business one day.
