Human chorionic gonadotropin or human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) is a hormone produced during pregnancy. Is this hormone beneficial or harmful when used as a supplement in dieting? Here are two great journal articles that cover both points of view.

IMG PERFORMANCE IN THE 2011 MATCH

For the ninth consecutive year, the number of first-year (PGY-1) residency positions offered through the Match increased. A total of 23,421 first-year positions were offered in the 2011 Match, held earlier this month. This represents an increase of 612 positions compared to last year and an increase of more than 2,800 positions since 2002.

The number of IMGs, including Fifth Pathway participants, who matched to first-year positions decreased by 60 compared to 2010. Of the 10,477 IMGs who participated in the 2011 Match, 4,626 (44.2%) matched. In the 2010 Match, 4,686 (42.4%) IMGs were matched to first-year positions.

Of the 6,659 IMG participants who were not U.S. citizens, 2,721 (40.9%) obtained first-year positions. The number of non-U.S. citizen IMGs who obtained positions in 2011 decreased by 160 compared to last year.

Of the 3,769 U.S. citizen IMG participants, 1,884 (50.0%) were matched to first-year positions, an increase of 135 over last year. This is the eighth consecutive year that there has been an increase in the number of U.S. citizen IMGs matching to first-year positions.

Of the 49 Fifth Pathway participants in the Match, 21 (42.9%) were matched to first-year positions.

It is important to note that the total number of IMGs who will fill PGY-1 positions for the 2011-2012 academic year will be higher than the number obtaining positions through the 2011 Match. Although the majority of PGY-1 positions in the United States are filled through the Match, a significant number of IMG applicants obtain positions outside of the Match. For example, while 4,796 IMGs obtained PGY-1 positions through the 2009 Match, 7,335 IMGs entered PGY-1 for the 2009-2010 academic year.

The 7,335 IMGs entering PGY-1 for the 2009-2010 academic year is an increase of 59 over the prior year and an increase of 1,262 since the 2002-2003 academic year.

" Medical Education in the Caribbean: Variability in Medical School Programs and Performance of Students ." In the paper there is a table listing each Caribbean Island and the corresponding USMLE Step 1, USMLE Step 2 CS, USMLE Step 2 CK pass rates. This paper is free to read and is a must for any one thinking about going to the Caribbean for Medical school.

Welcome to our USMLE Step 1 Score Estimator Tool!

In preparing for the USMLE Step 1 exam, it seemed that the most frustrating aspect was a lack of any sort of feedback about how the preparation was proceeding. A group of us were studying day and night, but realized that we really had no idea how we would do on Step 1 or if we would even pass! Compounding matters was the fact that Step 1 may only be taken once (unless you fail). In spite of all this, we fortunately ended up doing fairly well on Step 1. However, several of our close friends failed Step 1 or were very surprised at their low score. It wasn't because they were not smart, in fact many of them were in the top quarter of our medical school class (a top 20 US medical school). The single biggest reason cited for their poor performance was a lack of feedback on the effectiveness of their preparation.

With that in mind, a group of us (including some engineers) decided to get together and create this website tool to help future medical students gauge how they are doing during their Step 1 preparation. This tool provides an estimated USMLE Step 1 score based on several commonly used test preparation measures. The estimated score is based on mathematical regression models derived from data gleaned from all available resources, including academic journal publications, other websites, USMLE forums, and (most importantly) anonymous score submissions. The strongest influence on the regression models are the anonymous score submissions. Their accuracy is dependent upon the number of students that submit scores anonymously to this website and the integrity of the medical students that submit scores anonymously.
