Air Asia Cancels Medan Jakarta Flights

We have received information that Air Asia will be canceling flights for Medan – Jakarta and Jakarta – Medan from 01 October 2010

It is a big news for travelers flying Air Asia since many of its customers buy their air tickets way in advance from the many online promotions carried out by Air Asia. Many travelers will be affected by this cancellation of route especially those traveling to and from Medan.

Air Asia has not released official statement about this cancellation as yet, but looking at the official Air Asia social websites, we can confirm that this is true. The other issue is regarding the refund of tickets bought which many rumors have been going round that Air Asia will not be refunding cash but in the form of credits to other routes. Air Asia has not official states how it will handle refunds except that customers can visit its sales office or counter to process refund and Air Asia will be providing “solution package”

Air Asia Cancels Medan Jakarta Flights

Some customers may be left stranded for those who have bought routes with onward journeys such as Medan – Jakarta and Jakarta – Denpasar. Since Medan – Jakarta flights will be canceled, customers may be forced to fly other airlines for one of the routes which could cost more or affect their traveling plans.

Air Asia has not released official statement on why it decided to cancel the flights. Other flights cancellation include Jakarta – Surabaya and Surabaya – Jakarta route. We hope Air Asia will provide a fair solution for its customers.

If you are affected by this cancellation, you should try to contact Air Asia office / counter as soon as possible to re – plan your holiday. OUTRAGED, a friend of mine, living in Australia sent me the link to this article. It is being titled with “Worst. City. Ever.”. As a writer of MedanKu.com, it hurts tremendously to read such a negative article being written about this city.

Medan – Worst. City. Ever.

“Dear Medan. I hate you.

I visited you recently and found you the most unpleasant, charmless and thoroughly depressing city I’ve ever encountered. And I’ve visited plenty of s—holes in my time.

Now, when it comes to big Indonesian cities I have pretty low expectations.

I live in Jakarta, the biggest of them all, so I know what I’m in for: traffic, pollution, heat, noise, chaos, the stench of human waste.

And you, Medan – Indonesia’s third biggest city – you provided all those things. In great abundance.

In fact, even though your population, at three million, is a quarter that of Jakarta’s, I reckon you’re worse on just about every count.

Quite an achievement.

But Medan, you’re awful not just because of your many failings but because you appear to have no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

You’re slim pickin’s for hotels, you don’t seem to boast a single, decent restaurant and from what I’ve heard, you’ve got no real nightlife.

Your airport is a Boschian nightmare, your roads a mess, your buses an embarrassment and your taxis … well, if I ever find one I’ll let you know.

And ever heard of trees?

Okay, so you have a big mosque but it’s also the closest thing you’ve got to a tourist attraction. And you have a few shopping malls but what city doesn’t?

I understand now why you consistently feature on people’s “Worst. City. Ever.” lists.

You’re at the very top of mine.

Okay, I admit, there’s a personal element to this. See, I got robbed in one of your hotels.

It wasn’t a very nice hotel. It promotes itself as a four star hotel when in actual fact it’s closer to a two. But that’s fine. I don’t need luxury and it cost less than $100 a night.

Except, in the end, it actually cost a couple of grand. Because while I was out one night scouring the streets for a decent meal – in vain, of course – someone broke into my room and stole a giant wad of company cash from my suitcase.

Why did I have a giant wad of cash, you ask? Well, because Indonesia is a mostly cash economy, so I’m forced to travel with plenty of it. But why didn’t I put it in the safe? Well, because the hotel didn’t provide one.

And when I brought the robbery to the hotel’s attention the staff were predictably – and perhaps deliberately – unhelpful.

Security staff at first said they could give me a keycard lock report, so I could see if anyone else entered my room. But then – for reasons not properly explained – they suddenly couldn’t.

But that was okay, they said. They could show me the CCTV footage outside my room instead.

Oh no, wait, sorry! We don’t actually know the password to review the CCTV!

Can you say “inside job”?

Needless to say I moved to a different hotel for my final night. I woke up the next morning in blood-stained sheets. Mozzies never take any interest in me but your Medan mozzies made quite a frenzied exception.

I didn’t get malaria. But I did get spectacularly, violently sick about a week later from an intestinal parasite, which I’m certain I picked up from you, Medan. I just know it.

I’ve never been so happy to board a plane as I was the one that whisked me away from you, Medan. And I never want to see you again.”

Easy Steps to Renew Driving License in Medan

Since the government starts to implement SAMSAT corner in several locations in Medan, it has become easier for residents to renew their driver’s license and road tax. Before these counters opened, residents have to either go to the main office which is usually packed with long queues and unclear procedures or request the service of a third party to help them apply or even renew their driving licenses.

The Law:

Driving License is known as SIM in Indonesia which stands for “Surat Ijin Mengemudi” and as printed at the back of the driving license of Indonesia, the law states that:

Anyone who drives on the road WITHOUT drivers license can be jailed for up to 4 years in prison or face a maximum fine of Rp1.00.000 ( 1 million rupiah )
Anyone who drives on the road who cannot produce / SHOW a VALID drivers license when requested can be jailed for up to 1 month or face a maximum fine of Rp250.000
Apart from prison terms and fine, the court may withdraw the issue of the license and face further charges and/or fines

Now, you know why it is important to make sure you have a valid license, you should check to renew your license as and when it is expired or expiring.

We went to try out the process for ourselves to see how easy it is to renew drivers license at one of the counters in the car park building of Sun Plaza Medan t o share with you the experience and process if you or your friends need to renew their license.

What is needed to renew Driving License:

Fill in renewal application form
Current Driving License (SIM)
Identification Card (KTP) + photocopy of it
Doctors Letter of Good Health
For Driver’s License that has expired for more than 1 year, need to take a theory and practical test

Hence, you are warned not to let your driving license expire for more than a year or else you will have to go through the tests again.

With regard to the Doctor’s letter, do not worry to get one from your doctor, there is a doctor at the counter ready to take your blood pressure and provide you with the letter required for Rp20.000

Driving License Renewal Process:

Fill in the required form, you will need your passport information, date of expiry as well
See the doctor to get the required doctors letter, pay Rp20.000
Get your picture taken, thumb print and signature. Pay the officer Rp100.000 for your driving license (+ requested tips) Your card will be issued on the spot at this station.

Its as easy as that! We were amazed that it has become an easy process. The counter is open daily from 10.00 WIB to 21.00 WIB except for public holidays. There is also a counter at Plaza Medan Fair for your convenience.

New Rp10.000 notes

New Rp10.000 Notes Indonesia Rupiah denomination in July 2010

Bank Indonesia will soon release a new Rp10.000 note in blue colour. The new notes will be released in this July as announced by the Head of Economy and Finance of Bank Indonesia Regional North Sumatra-Aceh, Maurids H Damanik.

According to Maurids, the new Rp10.000 note has no changes in the design, the design will stay exactly the same. The only changes is the colour from purple to blue. The notes are now in the process of printing. Once printing is completed, the new note will be solicialized to the public.

The reason for the changes and released of this new Rp10.000 note by Bank of Indonesia is because the public have complained that the Rp10.000 notes looks similar in colour to the red Rp 100.000 notes. With similar numericals and colour, one can easily mistaken the two notes.

However, the new Rp10.000 notes in blue will resemble the BLUE Rp 50.000 notes. Although different in numerical value, it can also be mistaken. So be more careful with your money from July 2010. Blue notes may is no longer just Rp50.000 but can also be Rp10.000.

As the saying goes, “Dont judge the book by its cover” now you should not assume the value by just looking at the colour of your money.

Newly Renovated Gleni International Hospital in Medan

We recently visited the newly renovated Gleni International Hospital in Medan.

Previously this was the franchised or managed Gleneagles Hospital that was outdated for many years.

The newly renovated although not fully renovated has taken shape. We were impressed of the new cleaner whiter atmosphere compared to the previously beige darker interior.

The new layout is also more convenient as they have moved the pharmacy, laboratory on the ground floor where it is much more convinient for outpatients who seek consulations from general praticieners. Previously, getting medicines from the pharmacy takes too long as staff needs to get them from 2nd storey.

Outpatients and the 24 hour Emergency (ER) center is located at the rear of the hospital building where the car park is.
The front of the hospital building is dedicated to hospital admissions, laboratory, general check up and a cafetaria for guests.

Hopefully, the wards and rooms will be updated to a more cleaner environment and standard of service and equipments will be upgraded too.

Gleni Hospital 24 Hour Emergency

One thing still fall short is the flow of traffic in and out of the Gleni Hospital Building which was much better when it was Gleneagles Hospital. Because of the one way traffic on the main road of the hospital, the current flow does not allow vehicles to make a round trip if there is no parking spot in the carpark forcing vehicles to turn out of the hospital to turn round a block of buildings to return to the entrance of the hospital. In simple terms, the vehicle entrance and exit should be switched.

Medan Polonia Airport has two large airport lounge at the domestic terminal operated by two private companies known as the JW Sky Lounge and Crown Gapura Angkasa.

JW Sky Lounge is located on the left side corner of the terminal which is mostly missed. The Crown Airport Lounge is on the right side of the terminal after the airport tax counter beside the boarding gates.

To use the airport lounge facilities, you will either need to have one of the many local credit cards accepted by the lounge for Free or pay a Rp60.000 fee.

The two airport lounges accept credit cards from different credit card companies (and its one or the other) so you need to check with them which of the cards are accepted. For example, the JW Sky Lounge accept Citibank credit cards among many others and the Crown accept HSBC credit cards among others.

We also love the dessert Es Teler which is crushed ice like es cendol but served with coconut milk, avocado and jackfruits! A cooling dessert to finish off the meal. We can’t wait to dip our spoon into it hence didn’t get a chance to capture the picture for you

With the simple one dish concept, it’s a good choice, should you want a quick inexpensive lunch or casual dinner works just fine as well.
