Medford, MA Snow Emergency Declared at NOON 2/7/21

The City of Medford is declaring a snow emergency to go into effect at noon on Sunday, February 7.

On secondary roads, parking is allowed on the EVEN side of the street only, unless your street has been granted an exemption by the Traffic Commission (see a list at www.medfordma.org/snow). Cars parked on the odd side of the street during snow emergencies will be ticketed and towed. On main arteries, there is NO PARKING allowed on either side of the street. There is signage posted on these main arteries, and a full list of streets is below and at www.medfordma.org/snow. If you live on a main artery, you are allowed to park on a secondary road, even if it is permit parking as these restrictions are temporarily lifted during a snow emergency. Once the snow emergency is lifted, parking enforcement will resume as usual.

To help us make sure that there are enough on-street parking spaces, if you have access to a driveway, please use those spaces and reserve on-street spaces for others.

As a reminder, property owners are required to shovel sidewalks abutting your home or business within 6 daylight hours after the end of the storm, or you may be fined.

Hello, this is Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn with a COVID-19 Vaccine Update.

Today, the state announced a new constituent service option for residents 75 and older who need assistance with registering for a COVID-19 Vaccine. In addition to the team we have set up here in Medford, you can now contact the Massachusetts Vaccine Scheduling Resource Line by calling 2-1-1. This line is specifically for residents 75 and older who have difficulty using the Internet to schedule appointments. The state’s resource line is available in multiple languages. It is important to note that:

The representatives on the state resource line do NOT have easier access to appointments; they will be using the same website as any other individual wanting to register (MAimmunizations.org)

Due to the high demand for vaccines, it may take several weeks to secure an appointment.

If no appointments are available, residents ages 75 and older will have the option to be added to a call back list for mass vaccination sites.

As a reminder, we also have three options here in Medford for those needing assistance with registration:

If you are a resident of a Medford Housing Authority Building, please call 781-396-7200 and ask to leave a message with Lisa Tonello or Barbara Fleming.

While we do not currently have vaccines to administer here in Medford, we are pooling our resources with some of our regional partners and we are hopeful that we will have news regarding a Medford clinic within the next few weeks. Hello, this is Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn with a COVID-19 update for January 8, 2021.

First, I want to wish you all a healthy and happy New Year. 2020 was not an easy year, but with vaccines starting to be distributed already, I am hopeful for a healthier and successful 2021.

This week, based on Medford’s positive case rates over the past 2 weeks, the Massachusetts DPH has placed Medford into the red or “high risk” category. As of this week, 2/3 of the communities in the state are now considered high risk. We remain in a surge throughout the state, and hospitals are seeing significant impacts as a result. Though we have hopeful vaccine news, it’s extremely important that we all continue to remain vigilant and follow the Governor’s orders to keep ourselves and our fellow residents healthy. We are not out of the woods yet, and I am urging everyone to continue to do their part to help us slow the spread of COVID-19.

I know that many of us are eager to start receiving the COVID-19 vaccine and want to know when and where they can be vaccinated. Long-term care facilities have already begun vaccinations, beginning next week our first responders will receive their first dose as part of the state’s “Phase 1” of vaccine distribution. Phase 2, which we do NOT have the start date for yet, will include those over the age of 75 or those with 2 or more comorbidities. All of the information about vaccines and vaccination schedules are being led by the state, and we will share information as soon as we have it.

Medford, MA COVID -19 Mask Guidelines from CDC.Gov

CDC recommends that people wear masks in public settings, like on public and mass transportation, at events and gatherings, and anywhere they will be around other people.

How to Select

When selecting a mask, there are many choices. Here are some do’s and don’ts.

DO choose masks that

Have two or more layers of washable, breathable fabric

Completely cover your nose and mouth

Fit snugly against the sides of your face and don’t have gaps

DO NOT choose Masks that

Are made of fabric that makes it hard to breathe, for example, vinyl

Have exhalation valves or vents that allow virus particles to escape

Are intended for healthcare workers, including N95 respirators or surgical masks

Special Considerations

Gaiters & face shields

Wear a gaiter with two layers, or fold it to make two layers

Not recommended: Evaluation of face shields is ongoing, but effectiveness is unknown at this time.

Glasses

If you wear glasses, find a mask that fits closely over your nose or one that has a nose wire to limit fogging.

Children

Find a mask that is made for children to help ensure proper fit

Check to be sure the mask fits snugly over the nose and mouth and under the chin and that there are no gaps around the sides

Do NOT put on children younger than 2 years old

Cold weather gear

Wear your scarf, ski mask, or balaclava over your mask

Scarves, ski masks, and balaclavas are not substitutes for masks

How to Wear

Wear a mask correctly and consistently for the best protection.

Be sure to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before putting on a mask.
Do NOT touch the mask when wearing it. If you have to often touch/adjust your mask, it doesn’t fit you properly, and you may need to find a different mask or make adjustments.

This is Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn on behalf of the Medford Board of Health with an important message. First, I hope that you and your families had a wonderful holiday and are looking forward to a happy New Year.

We are expecting a significant surge in COVID-19 cases following the holidays, much like what we saw after Thanksgiving. While staff at the Board of Health are working diligently through cases, we remind everyone that if you get tested and you are experiencing symptoms (even cold-like symptoms), you should remain isolated – even from members of your immediate household – while you await your results.

Even If you get tested without having symptoms, you should stay home until you receive a negative test result. If you test positive for COVID-19, you should consult your health care provider.

Now, more than ever, we have to stay vigilant to push through this difficult time. Public Health staff will make initial contact with all positive cases in the City to assist with the next steps and contact tracing. As always, we remind everyone to wear your mask, wash your hands, practice social distancing, and avoid gatherings. Under the State’s most recent revised orders, City Hall is currently operating with 25% of our staff at City Hall. Medford, MA COVID-19 Update 12/11/20

Hello, this is an important COVID-19 message on behalf of the Medford Board of Health.

First, out of an abundance of caution, we would like to make the public aware of COVID-19 cases related to a local dining establishment. If you dined at or ordered take out from Bocelli’s Restaurant between December 1 and December 6, we encourage you to visit a Stop the Spread site and be tested for COVID-19. You can see a list of test sites at www.mass.gov/StopTheSpread, or at www.medfordma.org/coronavirus-information. If you have additional questions, please call the Board of Health Resource Line at 781-475-5644.

This week, Governor Baker announced that all communities across the state will be rolling back to Phase 3, Step 1 of the state reopening plan effective on Sunday, December 13. Full details are available at www.mass.gov/reopening, but some of the new restrictions include:

• Outdoor gatherings will be limited to 50 people

• Outdoor theaters and performance venues will be limited to 25% capacity, no more than 50 people

• Indoor theaters and performance venues will be closed

• Capacity for indoor venues is reduced from 50% to 40% for several industry sectors including but not limited to: recreational businesses, gyms/health clubs, libraries, museums, retail, and office spaces, places of worship, lodging, and movie theaters.

• Restaurants must limit table size to 6 people, for no more than 90 minutes. Face coverings must be worn at all times, even when seated unless you are eating. Music performances are no longer allowed.

State experts have said that cases are expected to continue rising over the next few weeks, and it is important that we all do our part to keep the community safe and prevent overloading our hospital systems.

Hello, this is an informational message from the City of Medford about today’s forecasted snowstorm.

Based on current forecasts, the City of Medford is NOT declaring a snow emergency. However, as forecasts continue to change, we encourage all residents to park on the even side of the street wherever possible in case we need to call a snow emergency later today. Under our current City ordinance, when a snow emergency is in effect parking is allowed on the even side of the street ONLY.

DPW crews will be working throughout the day and night tonight to pre-treat roads, and to plow all streets as soon as the snow starts accumulating. To help us avoid needing to call a snow emergency, and to ensure all streets remain accessible for emergency vehicles, please:

• Make sure your cars are parked close to the curb

• If possible, move your car to the even side of the street

Medford, MA COVI-19 Surge 12/3/20

Hello, this is Mayor Lungo-Koehn.

Today, our Board of Health is in the process of contact tracing two separate and significant clusters of COVID-19 cases within the City of Medford: one from a potentially oversized gathering at Raso’s Grill, and another from a large Thanksgiving gathering at a private home.

For the cluster linked to Raso’s, there are several dates where employees and patrons may have been exposed. The Board of Health is continuing to contact trace, however: If you dined at or ordered takeout from Raso’s anytime between Monday, November 23rd and Monday, November 30th, please contact the Medford Board of Health Resource Line as soon as possible by calling 781-475-5644. Leave a message, and a staff member will return your call.

Yesterday the City of Medford had 54 positive cases in one day, making this our third-highest daily case rate overall. Like the entire state, we are seeing a surge in cases. We have urged everyone to be safe and follow regulations, especially for wearing masks and avoiding gathering sizes. And while the vast majority are doing the right thing and following the rules, I am incredibly sad, disappointed, and angry that others continue to be irresponsible and put people at risk.

People have sacrificed so much in these last 10 months. We have worked hard to get kids back in school, to keep our businesses open, and prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed. The blatant disregard for following the guidelines and orders from the State including gathering sizes, and from what I am seeing, people not wearing masks, is putting our community at risk.

We are and will continue to take this seriously. We are contact tracing, conducting investigations, and will continue to take action as necessary including issuing fines to any person or business who violates existing COVID-19 regulations.

Medford, MA COVID-19 New Yellow Category - Authorities Urge Continued Vigilance 11/12/2020

Hello, this is Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn with a COVID-19 update.

Last week, the state changed its COVID-19 reporting and color-coding metrics, which currently places Medford in the “yellow category” this week. Even though we are now in the yellow category, it is important to understand the COVID-19 positive numbers we are seeing in Medford, and why the NEW metrics can be misleading.

Over the past week, we have seen daily case counts as high as 18 and 22, with an average case count of 16 new positive cases per day. We have not seen case counts this high in Medford since the surge back in April of this year. In particular, we are seeing higher case counts in residents in their 20s and 30s, rather than in older residents as we did back in the spring. We are continuing to analyze our data and will make more targeted interventions as we need in order to slow the spread of COVID-19.

In the meantime, we urge everyone to continue to take this seriously and ask that we all do our part to keep Medford safe. Please, follow mask-wearing guidance, practice social distancing, and avoid gatherings of over 10 people. This is particularly important as we near Thanksgiving. I know that we all want to get together with our extended families and celebrate, but gathering in large groups could mean another surge in cases this fall and winter, and could jeopardize our ability to keep our businesses and schools open.

We all need to continue to do our part by following these guidelines and staying vigilant. Practicing these steps is crucial to preventing the spread and protecting the lives of those around us as well as preserving our health care systems’ limited capacity. Hello, this is Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn with a COVID-19 update.

Based on the City’s continued rate of positive cases, the City of Medford will remain in the state’s “red” or high-risk category this week. If we continue to be deemed as a red/high-risk community next week, we will be forced to roll back to Phase 3, Step 1, which will place further limits on outdoor gatherings, and further impact some businesses.

As cases continue to rise across the State, Governor Baker issued new executive orders this week. Beginning on Friday, November 6, 2020, Governor Baker has issued a new stay-at-home advisory, instructing all residents of Massachusetts to stay home between the hours of 10pm and 5am. Between 10pm and 5am, Residents should only leave home to go to work or school or for essential needs such as seeking emergency medical care, going to the grocery store or pharmacy, picking up take-out food, or receiving deliveries. Most businesses serving the public will be required to close at 9:30 p.m.

Governor Baker also implemented new orders requiring face coverings at all times, and reducing private gathering size limits to no more than 10 people indoors, and 25 people outdoors. Public venues are now limited to 25 indoors and outdoor limits will depend on if we are deemed a higher risk community, either 50 or 100.

Hello, this is the City of Medford with important information regarding citywide street sweeping.

The Medford DPW will conduct fall street sweeping over the course of several weeks, beginning on Thursday, November 12. Street sweeping will be conducted Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Street sweeping is divided into 14 zones with one zone conducted each day. To be sure that crews can access and clean each street, parking restrictions will be in place during your scheduled street sweeping days. Cars not moved from the street will be subject to ticketing and towing. In the event of heavy rain or snow, street sweeping in your zone may be postponed.

Street sweeping is essential for public health and safety, to clear leaves and debris from streets and catch basins, allowing for proper drainage of water, snow and ice, and making sure that our City’s streets are clean and safe.

There is NO PARKING on the designated street while sweeping is taking place. Cars that remain parked on the streets designated for that day will be subject to ticketing and towing.

Medford, MA COVID-19 Increase in Positive Cases Alert 10/29/20

Good Evening, this is Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn with a COVID-19 update.

Based on the City’s rate of positive cases over the last two weeks, as of today, the City of Medford has been moved from the state’s “yellow” category to the “red” category, placing us in the state’s “high risk” category for COVID-19. We are one of 54 cities and towns throughout the Commonwealth being added to the red category this week. In each of the last few weeks, between 12 and 17 cities moved from yellow to red.

In short, case counts across the state are continuing to rise rapidly, and once again we may be faced with difficult decisions in the weeks ahead in order to keep our community safe and healthy.

It is critical for the health and safety of our community that we continue our vigilance, adhering to safety guidelines; wear masks, practice social distancing, and wash hands frequently. These are our best tools to stop the spread of the virus. Gatherings, particularly indoors, continue to be another source of spread and I urge all of you to refrain from getting together with friends and family, beyond your close household contacts, especially this weekend when we may be tempted to host or attend Halloween parties.

With Halloween on Saturday, we are asking families to follow the CDC guidelines and avoid high-risk activities. A list of which can be found on our website at www.medfordma.org. The CDC categorizes trick or treating as high risk and we strongly advise that families do not Trick or Treat this year. We know the Holidays will be challenging as we all want so badly to reunite with friends and family, but for the safety of our loved ones, we need to plan and think differently this year. If we continue to be categorized as a red/high-risk community next week we will be forced to roll back to Phase 3, Step 1.

Please note that even though we are in the red category, this will not have immediate effects on our school re-opening timeline. Schooling will have to be re-assessed after four consecutive weeks in red per Governor Baker.

Staff from the Medford Police Department and the Medford Board of Health will accept medication for safe disposal.

COVID-19 Requirements to be in Place

During early voting, voters must adhere to all Covid-19 guidelines as set by the State and/or the City’s Board of Health. Regulations include:

All voters, observers, and staff must wear face coverings. Face coverings must be worn over the nose and mouth.

Social distancing guidelines will be enforced while voters wait in line both inside and outside of the polling place, as well as at voting booths.

Election staff will disinfect each voting both and pen after every use.

Hello, this is the City of Medford with an important clarification about flu shot requirements for students.

Under the state’s new requirements for flu shots, all children enrolled in pre-school and K-12 schools are required to receive a flu shot by December 31, 2020, unless a medical or religious exemption is provided. Elementary and secondary students in districts and schools that are using a remote education model are not exempt and are required to receive a flu shot. The exemption for students in remote learning applies only to those in higher education, such as a college or university.

We apologize for any confusion with regard to the exemption, but again, please be advised that unless a medical or religious exemption is provided, your student MUST receive a flu vaccine before attending school as of January 2021.

Hello, this is Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn with COVID-19 updates for October 2, 2020.

Beginning on Monday, October 5, under the State’s guidance, the City of Medford will proceed to Phase 3,

Step 2 of the phased Reopening Plan. This means that as of October 5, private outdoor events and

gatherings have a limit of 50 people, and for public outdoor gatherings there is a limit of 100 people.

In addition, indoor and outdoor recreation businesses, gyms, museums, and libraries will be allowed to

open to 50% capacity,

While this is a positive step forward for local businesses and for our local economy,

I cannot stress enough how important it is that we all continue to remain vigilant and take steps to keep the

spread of COVID-19 low. Please wear face coverings when in public places and when you cannot safely

social distance. Be vigilant when visiting our parks and playgrounds. Wear face coverings and practice good

hygiene, wash your hands as often as possible with soap and water, and use hand sanitizer whenever possible.

As of this week, the City of Medford remains in the state’s “yellow” category. The pandemic is not over,

and potential health and safety impacts are still very real. By doing our part now, we can continue to ensure

our City remains safe and healthy and on the road to reopening both our businesses and schools.

Hello, this is the City of Medford with information about the City’s Paint Shed program which will be held as scheduled on Saturday, October 3.

Due to high demand for the program after other paint disposal events were canceled as a result of COVID-19, the City will host a drive-through Paint Shed program on October 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the DPW Yard at 21 James Street.

Medford residents wishing to dispose of extra oil or latex-based paints can come to the DPW yard on Saturday but must have an ID. All paint cans must be clearly labeled, and a 5 gallon limit per household will be strictly enforced.

COVID-19 safety requirements will be in place, including no-contact paint pickup and ID checks, social distancing guidelines, and all staff will be wearing PPE. Residents will be asked to show ID through their car window during this drive-up event, and paint must be placed in the trunk of your car for DPW staff to pick up. Residents should not exit their vehicle at any time.

The deadline for filling out the Census is September 30, and we want to be sure all residents are counted! A complete count of our city means that we’ll get more allocated funding for things like schools, roads, and services. It helps make sure that we have the correct numbers of representatives at the federal level to help fight for what our city needs.

If you have not filled out your Census, we encourage you do make sure you are counted! The Census form is easy, fast, and will not be used for any identifying purposes for you or your family.
