Carol Lee Hannon is an artist who hails from Philadelphia, PA. Much like her personal journey, her approach to the creative process is in constant motion. She believes that limiting oneself to a specific style or prized piece is to limit the intrinsic nature of creativity a.k.a. the freedom of expression.

Prior to painting, she spent the early years of her career in fashion editorial and visual merchandising before she joined her parents at Rosekei & Company, Inc., an innovative textile design studio in Manhattan’s garment district. Here, she and her team of artists painted original pieces on silk for top fashion houses such as Vera Wang, Norma Kamali, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and alice + olivia.

At the end of 2016, Carol left the fashion world to start a family. She has since replanted her roots in Media, PA alongside her husband, Jason, their two young daughters and her father Han where she continues to paint, enjoy insanely good food, and rejoice in binge-watching Netflix.

Artist Statement

My work embodies moments in thought and time; experiences as they happen. This desire to create from the present has led to the exploration of multiple styles and mediums of art. And the freedom to experiment has allowed my work (and self) to continue evolving in ways that feel more true to nature; unfettered by nostalgia or contrived relevance. Vibrant colors signify a point of climax; soft rolling clouds a moment of clarity. Each piece is a continuum of or pivot from its predecessor, a push towards being fully planted in the present, both real and unreal.

Born from immigrant parents who are both artists themselves, there was an unspoken understanding that my career had to be something more than “just art”. Art was too abstract and too subjective to secure a fulfilling life of security and success. But like my parents, the need to create was unavoidable. My early works strove for substance and connection and the majority of my pieces were rooted in history – the history of family, race or gender. The meaning preceded the work itself, and this task of inseminating a message through art became a self-inflicted burden that overshadowed the very privilege of an artist: the freedom of self-expression, no matter how seemingly absurd or mundane the subject.

My background in fashion and textile design is evocative of this process. Its intrinsic calling for mass appeal and of what’s now has inevitably cemented a permanent place in my work. It is my hope that viewers feel a thread of curiosity, whimsy and desire when they see my pieces. And it is this feeling of shared possession – and perception – that I believe to be success.

MEDIA ARTS COUNCIL RECEIVES ROTARY GRANT TO MARK MEDIA’S OPEN SPACES

December 16, 2021 (MEDIA, PA) — The Media Arts Council (MAC) received funding from the Rotary Foundation of Media and the Rotary Club of Media to design and execute a public art project marking many of Media’s parks and open spaces.

This public art project is a collaboration with the Borough of Media to increase awareness, usage, and enjoyment of Media’s open spaces. MAC Gallery Artists, Carrie Barcomb, Laurie Doran, and Shannan McConnell designed and are creating the markers, each of which stands about 5-feet tall.

Susan Garrison of the Media Rotary Foundation said, “Our club and foundation worked together to support this unique project which showcases both MAC and local artists and some of Media’s great assets – its wonderful open spaces – while also highlighting Rotary as a true partner with the Media community.”

The unique and original markers reflect the character of each park, unified in incorporating MAC’s signature and the Rotary logo. The marker for Heritage Park is installed, with the markers for Philip Green Park, Houtman Park, Trusty Tot Lot, and Media Elementary School to follow. Markers for Media Borough, Barrall Field, Glen Providence Park, Manchester Park, Diamond Park, Jaisohn Park, and the Water Tower Park will complete the series.

“We value our open spaces in the Borough, and we are so pleased to collaborate with MAC and Rotary to enhance these community assets with engaging public art. It’s truly this type of cross-sector collaboration that helps to make Media ‘Everybody’s Hometown,’” said Brittany Forman, Media Borough Manager.

MAC is behind several public art projects throughout the Borough, including the recent mural at Glen Providence Park, Endeavor on the Plum Street Mall, the traffic-calming mural at Third and Jackson Streets, and others.

The 16th Annual Media Arts Council Juried Photography Exhibition (PhotoEx) is open to amateur and professional photographers nationwide.

2022 Theme: “In the Moment”

Photography stops time and captures unique moments of light on subject matter. Whether intentional or through a fleeting serendipitous shutter click, use your own unique interpretation of this theme in your photographic submissions. The juror will consider good composition and photographic technique, as well as interesting, unusual subject matter, and interpretation of the theme. All works will be considered equally regardless of format or availability for hanging.

Amie Potsic is the CEO and Principal of Amie Potsic Art Advisory LLC, Host of the Art Watch Radio Show & Podcast, as well as an established photographer and installation artist. Ms. Potsic provides exceptional advisory services for collectors, artists, institutions, and businesses. She has extensive experience curating exhibitions for galleries, universities, and museums. $35 for up to 3 entries
$40 for 4 entries
$45 for up to 5 entries

Exceptions: Previously accepted images to PhotoEx or Media ICONS are not permitted. Media Arts Council board members, employees, and their family members may enter the competition and be accepted for exhibit, but will not be eligible to be judged for awards and prizes.

All submitted images must be uploaded digitally to the Form below and follow these specifications. We will not accept any works unless the file format, file name, and image sizes are as listed below:

DO NOT imbed any information in the image area itself, such as name, copyright, logo, etc., to keep judging anonymous.

Notification Of Acceptance:

Entrants will be notified via email of their acceptance into the exhibit on or about September 5, 2022.
Preparation of Accepted Works for Exhibit: This will be our first hybrid exhibit with ALL entrants displayed in our online gallery as well as available framed works hung and exhibited in our physical gallery in Media, PA.

Sales and Commission:

All digitally submitted works are eligible for sale as print-only production unless you indicate it as Not For Sale. All framed pieces can also be sold “as-is” and available for pickup from the MAC Arts Center at the culmination of our October exhibit. Media Arts Council will handle all sales of the artwork and receive a 40% commission on works sold from the exhibit.

Exhibit:

All accepted works will be included in the Online PhotoEx 2022 Exhibit, which will be available online for the foreseeable future. All accepted works that are also available for framing and exhibit in the MAC Art Center will be exhibited from Friday, October 7th through Sunday, October 30th. We hope to display as many online-only submissions in our physical gallery using a large rotating monitor display. To be determined.
Our in-person Opening will take place in the MAC Arts Center, 11 East State Street, Media PA on Friday October 7, 2022 from 5 to 7pm. We hope to include an online livestream of the event or a concurrent Zoom call for those who cannot attend in person. TBD.
Awards will be announced during the Gallery Opening. Checks will be sent via postal mail afterwards.

Framed Works:

These guidelines apply to any local photographers who are accepted as a finalist and would like to submit framed works for hanging in the MAC Arts Center Gallery. (Please read carefully, as improperly prepared works will not be exhibited.)

All physical pieces must be “hang-ready” and must have all hardware secured and fastened to allow for each piece to be hung from a single wire in the center of the piece. No “claws” or hanging clips will be accepted. Works not suitable for hanging will be rejected from the physical show.
All physical pieces must be framed at a dimension smaller than (<) 36″ on its longest side regardless of the final image size. Please contact the PhotoEx Committee regarding works submitted that are already framed at a larger size and we will see if we can accommodate.
The following presentations are acceptable:
            – Framed with or without matte
            – Gallery wrapped canvas
            – Photographs on metal panel
            – Standouts
Please place a label of some fashion on the back of your work so that we may identify each piece. Caution: Do not write on the back of the photographic print itself, which could cause an impression or bleed through to the front of the finished work.
All physical pieces must be hand delivered to the MAC Arts Center on Sunday October 2, 2022 between the hours of 3pm and 6pm. No deliveries, mail, or courier services will be accepted.
MAC is not responsible for adjustments to poorly framed or prepared art. Improperly prepared works will not be exhibited. Upon delivery, if any piece is determined to be inadequate for exhibit, you will be given the opportunity to make corrections and re-deliver on Monday, October 3, 2022 from 11am-1pm.
Once our October Gallery Rotation is concluded, all physical works must be picked up at the Gallery on Sunday, October 30th 4pm to 6pm.
MAC will not be responsible for packing, delivering or shipping works.
Any works not retrieved by the published last retrieval time will be subject to a $10 per piece storage fee. If not retrieved within 30 days, the works will become part of the MAC permanent collection.

Thank you for your interest in having your work in the MAC Arts Center. We are actively seeking out local artists to showcase their work in the State Street room next to our MAC Artists and invited artists. Accepted works will remain in MAC for 1 month, at which time all works in the front room must rotate out. We will contact local artists from our list and invite them to submit a piece for inclusion that month. If accepted, we ask for a $15 processing fee to include the work in our online Marketplace, but this fee is waived for MAC Members in good standing.

Artist Statement

My work tends to circle a few questions: Are we separate and distinct, untethered from one another and from the world? Or are we unique beings embedded in a vast, oceanic flow that moves with mystery and purpose? These questions have manifested differently, becoming several distinct bodies of work.

The Mandala series presents the inner life as being bounded by the body (in the form of the circle) while maintaining intimate relation to the outer world. The circle, like the body, separates the outer space from the inner while the pattern gently magnetizes the viewer’s attention into the center. The journey through the pieces elicits feelings of centeredness but also invites questions. What is the relationship between the soul of the individual and the soul of the world?

Black and white drawing series consists primarily of intimate views into the beauty of everyday nature. These images are also bounded by circles but, in this case, the impact of the circle is to sub-consciously release the viewer from modern, camera-bound forms of seeing. Instead of objectifying the world, the roundness of the outer edge implies that the central image is a vital part of a greater living whole to which we ourselves are related. The roundedness of the eye and the living embodied perception it provides is a primary focus.

Overall my work is a bridge in the midst of construction, desirous of a crossing between inner and outer realities. Contained with my work is the longing for a reuniting of long repressed feminine principles with the culturally dominant masculine norms. The circle, as a primarily feminine image, carries within itself notions of wholeness, interrelatedness, embodied existence and integration. These qualities are elusive in modern life. My work is a dream of connection, one which could allow us to span the gap between our distinct individuality and the deep, inexplicable connectedness of inner and outer nature.
