Picasso: The Full Story

Presented by a friend of Picasso in his later years, John Richardson, Picasso: The Full Story is an accessible and comprehensive look at the life of the most important artist of the 20th Century, examining the influences and the secrets behind many of the masterpieces he created. Televised previously on Channel 4 as Picasso: Magic, Sex and Death, the programme is divided into three parts.

Part 1: Magic
Magic (77 mins) traces Picasso’s early influences back to his birth in Malaga in 1881 and early childhood in Barcelona, attempting to relate his artistic power with the influence of Southern Spanish Andalusian gypsy lore, comparing the “search for the sacred fire” in his painting with voodoo and shamanism, where women are seen as sacrificial offerings made for his art. This is intriguing and Richardson makes a good case, examining numerous works and tying this into the well-known influence of the powerful symbolism of tribal and prehistoric art on Picasso’s later work. There is undoubted power in Picasso’s work and it is worth examining what the secret of that force is, but calling it ‘magic’ feels somewhat sensationalist and is far from convincing. What the first part manages to do successfully however is draw a clear line between Picasso’s life and the various early periods of his artwork, making a good connection between the duality of sex and death in Picasso’s work up to 1916; the death of his friend Cassagenes in Paris in 1900 as the inspiration for his Blue Period; his affair with model “La Belle Fernande”, their visits to Gosol and the beginning of his Rose Period; and the development of cubism with Braque. Particular attention is given to his ground-breaking work on “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon”, examining the influences of tribal art, early Iberian art and El Greco on this key work.

Our latest release is number three in our popular series, Painting the Head in One Sitting. This program varies from the other two in that the presentation is specifically arranged to illustrate the 29-step method featured in Mr. Sanden's book Portraits From Life in 29 Steps (North Light Books, 1999). Like the other two, this video takes the viewer step-by-step through the painting of a head-and-shoulders portrait, this time specifically enumerating the 29 steps featured in the book.

The 29 steps are divided into six sections: (1) The Layout, or preliminary drawing, (2) The Shadows, (3) The Halftones, (4) The Lights, (5) Restating, in which the artist refreshes and improves on previous judgements, and (6) Particularizing, in which the precise details of the facial features are painted.

The National Gallery, London has three important paintings of bathers: Monet's 'Bathers at La Grenouillere', Seurat's 'Bathers at Asnieres', and Cezanne's 'Bathers' (Les Grandes Baigneuses). Although made by French artists within a period of about thirty years, all three look very different: this film explores the broader context for their creation.

This film shows how nineteenth-century French artists exploited new subject matter, such as the bourgeoisie at leisure, new ways of composing paintings and depicting spatial form, and new ways of applying paint, to produce a variety of 'modern' works. It explores the experimental nature of avant-garde French painting in the second half of the century, looking also at the work of academic painters like Ingres to understand why these developments caused such an uproar.

Stunning photography of the paintings is accompanied by location footage and on-screen interviews with acknowledged experts on the subject.

How Deep Meaning Can Hide in the Tiniest Detail

Painting by painting, you'll see how each artist's technical choices—about composition, lighting, color, or brushstrokes, to name a few—contribute to a work's overall impact and statement. And you'll see how even the smallest detail of content can speak volumes. For instance, the artist may depict a room and include a painting hanging on a wall within that room, and that painting within the painting may have significant meaning. The same may be true of an artist's choice of background props or secondary figures in the painting.

In Adriaen van Ostade's stunning ink-and-watercolor Peasants Playing Gallet Outside an Inn, for example, the Haarlem artist's beautifully wrought images of rural peasant camaraderie, though presented with no small amount of affection, may also contain moral comments about the idleness many Dutch people would have seen in such activity. The man smoking a pipe in the foreground was an accepted symbol of laziness, and a scythe—an instrument of the harvest—remains pointedly unused, hanging from a post above the smoker's head.

Throughout the lectures, Professor Kloss shows how such details serve to open windows into the many aspects of Dutch society that gave its artists inspiration and themes, and that create the context for the course.

Dutch artists created paintings that offered insights into history and commerce. They also created great religious works that not only interpret biblical narratives but also address the spiritual conflicts of the period. Holland had a Jewish émigré community, small but vibrant, and the Dutch saw in Jewish history a parallel to their recent struggles; thus there existed a degree of tolerance perhaps unique in all of Europe. Finally, Dutch artists also placed on canvas every facet of daily domestic and social life in "genre" paintings, one of the most characteristic categories of Dutch art.
