I was fortunate to be able to attend this year's World Press Freedom Day.  Every year, May 3rd is a date which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession. The video below is the

I was asked to assist with training six Somali Civil-Society Organizations (CSO) leaders on how to produce and edit a short documentary film on the role of women and youth in conflict mitigation. This film was produced and edited by the three Somali women leaders.

I'm in the the "deluxe" suite, which means I have two fans instead of one. That's right, no A/C in the entire hotel and its already 90 degrees here! Did I mention there is no booze either??? Here is the documentary I wrote, shot, edited, and produced as part of my capstone thesis project at Georgetown University. I tried to approach this as a true multimedia journalist. As such I also developed a website, slide show, interactive map, and a short bio.  I would love to hear your feedback!

On September 27-28, 2010 IREX and IWPR hosted a conference entitled Emerging Technologies/Emerging Democracies that brought together government, media, and civil society to discuss the issues of technology, media, advocacy, and governance in Iraq. IREX asked the panelists, "How can government use technology to engage it's citizens?" These are their answers.

Building on the momentum from the first day of IREX and IWPR's “Emerging Technologies, Emerging Democracies” conference in Erbil, Dr. Dr Adil Matloob, Advisor to Minister of Science and Technology, announced the details of Iraq's groundbreaking e-governance plan, saying that Iraq needs to address critical areas "to bring to light the transformational impact of information, communication

More than 150 journalists and civil society leaders gathered in Erbil, Iraq for a ground-breaking two-day media conference, entitled “Emerging Technologies, Emerging Democracies,” held by IREX and the Institute for War & Peace Reporting (IWPR). The conference's first day featured panel discussions and training sessions on information access, new media and online advocacy as well as

The Southern Poverty Law Center claims that “thousands of men and women have joined black supremacist groups on the extremist fringe of the Hebrew Israelite movement.” The Israelite Church of God in Jesus Christ openly teaches it’s believers that the Lord does not love everybody equally, and skin color does matter. They also use the public libraries of our nation’s capital to spread their message

On October 25, 2009 the Iraqi Justice Ministry was bombed by two vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIED) that killed 127 people. Two months earlier I shot this video of my trip on the infamous “Road of Death” from the Baghdad International Airport (BIAP) to the Mansour Hotel which is located across the street from the Ministry. This post reminds me that life takes you to strange places.  This past weekend I ended up in Michigan visiting some family.  On Friday night my 69 year-old uncle bought tickets to see the Carolina Chocolate Drops at the Ark in Ann Arbor, MI.  What a surprise!  A self-described "African-American string band", the Chocolate Drops played two sold-out nights.&nbsp

Never went to Vista so why am I thinking about going to Windows 7?  Because it is $30! "Like so many of the recent Windows 7 promotions, it’s a limited time offer with more than a few caveats. But, details aside, Microsoft is offering college students Windows 7 for $29.99, according to a new deal announced on September 17." The http://www.win741.com/ site has the details.

I received my Flip UltraHD yesterday and am really enjoying it. It is sleek, and is ready to go right out of the box (just be sure to put the battery in). What is really impressive is how easy it is to use. Literally just point and shoot. I used it to shoot this video at the Detroit Airport. The Flip UltraHD shoots 720p HD video and has an HDMI port so you can directly plug it into my plasma.
