Interwar era efforts to expand US radio into China floundered in the face of flawed US policies and approaches. Situated at the intersection of media studies, technology studies, and US foreign relations, this study frames the ill-fated radio initiatives as symptomatic of an increasingly troubled US-East Asian relationship before the Pacific War.

Between 1919 and 1941, an array of American businessmen, diplomats, missionaries, and private citizens hoped to bring American radio to China. Initiatives included efforts to establish Sino-American radio-telegraphy links across the Pacific, start shortwave broadcasts of American programming to China, support America broadcasting in China itself, increase sales of American radio equipment, and carve out a niche on China’s airwaves for American missionary broadcasters. However, excessive faith in radio’s influential powers to promote the presumed benefits of American economic and cultural expansion blinded many Americans to the complexities they faced. American radio ultimately magnified rather than mitigated the tensions that pitched Americans against Chinese nationalists and Japanese imperialists in the years before the Pacific War. By drawing on scholarship in the history of technology, communications, media studies, and US foreign relations, the book’s exploration into the relationship between these fields enhances our understanding of today’s globalizing world.

Michael Krysko is an Assistant Professor of History at Kansas State University, where he has taught since 2006. He writes on the history of technology, mass media, and U.S. foreign relations, and has a particular interest in international radio. Michael Krysko earned his Ph.D. at Stony Brook University in 2001 and spent five years on the history faculty at Dowling College in New York before joining the Department of History at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas.

Selalu saja ada hal baru yang bisa ditemukan di Vatikan. Ketika sedang mengunjungi kota suci itu, Anthony Zonfrell (20) terkejut setengah mati karena melihat Sylvester Stallone di salah satu karya pelukis besar Raphael.

OK, memang sih bukan Stallone sungguhan. Tapi sang bintang “Rocky” dan “Rambo” yang siap tampil kembali di “The Expendables 2″ pada musim panas ini memang memiliki kemiripan dengan salah seorang objek lukisan yang menggambarkan Paus Gregory IX menyetujui Dekrit Vatikan, yang dibuat pada 1511.

Ada kemiripan di tulang pipi. Mirip di mata yang sayu. Hidung, rambut, dagu yang runcing. Orang yang berada di lukisan itu sangat mirip dengan Sly.

Fakta yang cukup menarik. Apalagi, Stallone sendiri juga berprofesi sebagai pelukis.

Tentu saja, ini bukan pertama kali seorang selebritas memiliki kemiripan dengan orang zaman dulu. Beberapa orang bertanya-tanya apakah Jack Black dan Paul Revere adalah orang yang sama. Setahun yang lalu, seseorang menemukan foto usang seorang prajurit era Perang Sipil yang terlihat persis seperti Nicolas Cage.

Dalam wawancara dengan David Letterman, Cage mengakui kemiripan tersebut, tapi berkeras kalau dia bukan penjelajah waktu dari abad ke-19.

Pihak Stallone sendiri tidak berkomentar mengenai lukisan mirip dirinya itu.

Tujuan kegiatan
Penggunaan 12 shio untuk mewakili tahun sudah lama diadopsi oleh orang Tionghoa. Tahun ini adalah tahun “naga.” Dalam pandangan orang Tionghoa, naga adalah binatang yang melambangkan keotoriteran, kehormatan serta keberuntungan, bisa terbang di angkasa, memiliki tenaga mengontrol angin dan hujan, semakin menambah rasa hormat manusia terhadapnya. Untuk berterima kasih kepada pendengar dan pemakai internet, Radio Taiwan International khusus menyelenggarakan kegiatan lomba lukis dan kuis berhadiah “Menyambut Tahun Naga Penuh Kemakmuran dan Keberuntungan.” RTI akan mengundi dan menyediakan hadiah menarik untuk kegiatan ini, termasuk 150 pemenang beruntung bagi kegiatan lomba lukis dan 315 pemenang untuk kegiatan kuis berhadiah.

Gerakan akar rumput #Indonesia Tanpa FPI mengeluarkan somasi menuntut reformasi di tubuh kepolisian Indonesia. Mereka dinilai gagal karena membiarkan kekerasan yang mengatasnamakan agama. Aksi kelompok akar rumput yang mengandalkan kekuatan jejaring sosial ini menandai babak baru dalam upaya menciptakan toleransi keberagaman di Indonesia.

“Dalam berbagai kekerasan terhadap kelompok minoritas, kami melihat adanya patron. Polisi membiarkan pemaksaan kehendak melalui kekerasan. Korban, mereka yang diserang, yang semestinya dilindungi, justru disuruh pergi. Polisi justru mematuhi kelompok yang melakukan kekerasan,” demikian tutur Tunggal Pawestri, salah satu koordinator Gerakan #Indonesia Tanpa FPI #Indonesia Tanpa Kekerasan yang mensomasi kepolisian Indonesia.

Lebih dari 1200 orang menandatangani somasi yang disebarluaskan melalui jejaring sosial Facebook, Twitter dan blog. “Semua orang yang mendukung somasi ini bersedia menyerahkan fotokopi KTP untuk mendukung semua upaya guna menghentikan kekerasan. ”

Somasi yang diajukan ke Mabes Polri Kamis (10/5/2012) pukul 13.00 WIB itu berisi tuntutan reformasi dalam tubuh kepolisian dan agar polisi menjalankan tugas sesuai dengan amanat undang-undang. “Jika dalam dua minggu ke depan masih ada pembiaran atas kasus-kasus kekerasan dan intimidasi atas nama agama maka kami akan menempuh ranah hukum baik hukum perdata maupun pidana.”

Protes
Somasi ini dikeluarkan sebagai bentuk protes atas kinerja polisi dalam menangani berbagai aksi kekerasan yang dilakukan ormas-ormas berkedok agama yang beberapa hari terakhir ini terjadi di berbagai tempat di Indonesia.

Pembubaran diskusi yang menghadirkan penulis lesbian Muslim dari Kanada, Irshad Manji di Jakarta dan Yogyakarta hanyalah satu dari rentetan aksi FPI dan ormas sejenis.

“Tercatat dalam kurun waktu tiga hari berturut-turut telah terjadi beberapa kali peristiwa kekerasan atas nama agama dan pembiaran yang dilakukan oleh pihak kepolisian, seperti yang terjadi pada saat pembubaran diskusi di salihara, serta pemukulan terhadap aktifis sejuk oleh pada saat peliputan ibadah HKBP Piladelphia,” demikian tertulis dalam somasi yang bisa diakses online melalui situs Gerakan #Indonesia Tanpa # Indonesia Tanpa Kekerasan.

The silent majority menuntut
Pelopor somasi adalah gerakan akar rumput yang menamakan diri #Indonesia Tanpa FPI #. Siapakah mereka?

“Kami adalah warga biasa, bukan aktivis, yang prihatin atas munculnya berbagai aksi kekerasan yang mengatasnamakan agama,” jelas Tunggal dalam wawancara dengan Radio Wereldomroep. Munculnya Gerakan #Indonesia Tanpa FPI# ini bisa jadi awal munculnya protes dari kelompok yang sering disebut sebagai the silent majority, kelompok mayoritas di Indonesia yang menentang berbagai aksi kekerasan yang dilakukan oleh ormas berkedok agama seperti FPI.

Selama ini, media sosial seperti Facebook dan Twitter menjadi tempat “aman” bagi kelompok mayoritas ini untuk mengeluarkan amarah dan protes mereka atas berbagai kekerasan yang dilakukan oleh FPI terhadap kelompok minoritas dengan mengatasnamakan agama.

Terinspirasi oleh penolakan warga Kalimantan awal tahun ini atas pendirian cabang FPI di sana muncullah gagasan mengkoordinir aksi menentang berbagai kekerasan oleh ormas berkedok agama.

“Kalau masyarakat Dayak bisa kenapa kita tidak?” kata Tunggal. “Kami lalu berpikir kenapa tidak kita bikin gerakan yang konkrit. Tidak hanya posting-posting saja tapi kita lakukan sesuatu.” Para pendukung gerakan ini beragam mulai dari mahasiswa, karyawan, aktivis sampai seniman.

Melalui blog, Facebook dan Twitter mereka menjalin komunikasi.

Gerakan #Indonesia Tanpa FPI# Indonesia Tanpa Kekerasan mulai dikenal luas ketika mereka menggelar protes damai di Jakarta pada 14 Februari 2012 lalu. Ratusan orang turun ke jalan dan menyuarakan aspirasi penolakan mereka terhadap FPI dan organisasi-organisasi yang memakai kekerasan dan mengatasnamakan agama.

“Banyaknya dukungan yang muncul membuat kami optimis untuk meneruskan aksi ini,” jelas Tunggal.

Bukan FPI-nya tapi kekerasannya
Walau gerakan ini secara eksplisit menentang FPI, mereka menolak kalau dibilang mempromosikan pembubaran FPI.

“Kesepakatan kita pakai nama itu hanya untuk menarik perhatian media. Kita tetap menghormati kebebasan berserikat dan berkumpul. Dari sejarahnya yang kita tentang adalah kekerasan. Tagline kita selalu #Indonesia tanpa FPI. #Indonesia tanpa kekerasan.”

Gerakan yang muncul dari media sosial ini punya satu tujuan yaitu menolak aksi kekerasan yang mengatasnamakan agama. Menurut Tunggal, gerakan ini merupakan langkah yang besar.

“Kita secara terbuka menentang kekerasan yang dilakukan oleh ormas berkedok agama.” Ribuan dukungan yang muncul atas aksi somasi terhadap kepolisian menunjukkan bahwa gerakan ini punya potensi untuk terus berkembang.

“Para pendukung gerakan ini bisa menjadi agen-agen toleransi. Sekarang tinggal bagaimana kita menyisiri berbagai dukungan ini,” kata Tunggal.
