The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has announced that it will reduce its staff by about 8%, or 189 jobs, through buyouts, layoffs and position eliminations between August and October. These cuts will include 85 newsroom positions. As an additional cost-cutting measure, it will cease publishing all of its zoned inserts and the Better Health and Buyer's Edge sections, effective in August. The community news will be covered within the main metro and sports pages, while Better Health and Buyer's Edge will be folded into expanded Wednesday and Sunday Living sections. As part of the restructuring, the print and Web staffs will become one unit with a shared budget. Veteran reporter Lara Logan has been named chief foreign affairs correspondent for CBS Television Network, upped from her previous post as the chief foreign correspondent. She will now be based in Washington, D.C. and her coverage will includes foreign affairs and international security issues, as well as U.S. policy as it is made across government departments and agencies. Former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan has signed on as an analyst for Fox NFL Sunday. Strahan has previously had a connection with FSN/Fox Sports Net through his work on the Best Damn Sports Show, and was featured on NFL Sunday's pre-game show. Amidst several rumors concerning Leonard Downie's future with The Washington Post, it was officially announced that Downie will step down as executive editor from the paper. His last day will be Sep. 8. No replacement has been named. Downie was named executive editor in September 1991, after serving as managing editor since 1984. Before that, he was the national editor from 1982 to 1984, following three years as London correspondent. He also worked on the metropolitan staff as a reporter and editor for 15 years and ran the staff as assistant managing editor for metropolitan news from 1974 to 1979.
