Fifteen Rules of Being a Proficient Host or a Participant of
a Video Conference on an On-Line Platform

1. Get prepared and be on time!

At least, 10 minutes before your class starts, be ready for your lecture. Besides focusing on the subject matter, it is eminently important to be aware of the technology. Rehearse in advance, and have all visual and digital materials ready in order not to be fishing for them while lecturing: the order of visual materials, files to be shared, etc. Making a bullet-pointed draft is useful to serve as your script during your lecture. Familiarize yourself with the profile of the attendees. Addressing an attendee by his or her name, asking adequate questions will help ease the unusual situation.

2. Setup a community-like environment to get your audience engaged

In case you host your conference at home, inform the ones around you. Ask them to be silent. If you need to host your conference in a public place (only extraordinary circumstances can allow such a situation) pay great attention to your comfort zone and the possible violation of others privacy.

3. Mind your outfit, let it be natural

If mandatory, follow the dress code of your university; otherwise, your outfit should be comfy, but avoid to wear, for instance, a pajama or a hoodie.
After a few occasions, adapt your outfit to the attendees. It is useful if your appearance matches that of the attendees. However, waste not much time on your clothing. Your new haircut, wearing too much jewelry and a pricey suit may make you ridiculous and can downgrade your efforts.

4. Check your close-up. Your face/image on the camera should be the same size as others.
Even though you can implement a policy on framing in advance, get prepared for corrections (moving toward the camera or backward if necessary). It is important for the host to make sure each and every attendee use his or her own image as opposed to showing an avatar. Avoid a wide cut showing many attendees at the same time.

5. Do not bother with the background, but…

If it is possible, the background should be darker than the forefront and homogenous. Avoid having a window or a shiny and white surface in the background; otherwise, your face will be blurred and dark on the attendees' monitors. Check your surroundings and objects that can be seen in your video conference because the attendees will be able to see them as well, and their presence may imply unnecessary meanings. Try to separate space for your video conference. In a smaller apartment, your desk or even
the kitchen or your bedroom is suitable to host a video conference; however, make sure that the background is neutral and
avoid showing your personal belongings since they are part of your privacy.
Nonetheless, do not worry about pictures on the wall or trophies on the shelves appearing in the background. They can give a sense of intimacy that can improve engagement with your Attendees. Remember to make a great first impression.

6. Familiarize yourself with the tools to be used

Most importantly, recognize the place of your webcam. It is important to look into the camera as opposed to watching your monitor. Looking straight into the camera will enhance the attention of the attendees. For instance, I already put a white paper ring around my camera to force me to focus on my webcam. You should be aware of the gadgets you are using. First of all, the “mute” button is the most important feature to silence your mic if necessary. Practice with the tools and software you will be using in the video conference.

7. Mind your body and body language

Position yourself in front of the camera to have your eyes at the same level as your webcam is. Or you can tilt your chair in order to have your face and the webcam at right angles. If a tablet or a smartphone is used, do not hold it in your hand but place it on a table. A permanently shaking camera will disrupt the flow of your conference. As with public speaking, the upper body should preferably be free and straight in order to be able to use your hands. Pay great attention to position your device so that there should be as few distractions as possible behind the camera. For example, another monitor, desk lamp etc. Webcams are usually equipped with wide-angle lenses that can magnify objects in the forefront while anything in the background will appear bigger than it really is. With this effect, the image and the effect can be consciously modified.

8. Placing your device matters!

We use very different devices in a video conference. They have different features.
A desk computer monitor is at the height of our face. The monitor is almost vertical and
the built-in camera is on the top.
In case an iPad or a smartphone is used, it is usually placed on a desk but remember
the built-in camera is also placed there although this device is a bit tilted back for good
visibility; consequently, its position is not horizontal and the camera sees you from the bottom up. We can be seen on the screen as if a nurse were leaning over the bed. In order to avoid it, but a few books under your device.
Remember to avoid holding your device in your hand.

9. Lighting also matters!

Light is your best friend. If you are visible and look good, you'll be successful in your video conference. Sit next to a window to have enough natural light to have your facial expressions clearly visible. Pay attention to the contrast in order to avoid a sharp lightness shadow effect on your face. (Even a state-of-the-art digital device tends to measure light at the brightest point, so if the shadow is too deep, it becomes a black spot on the video.) This problem is solved in professional photography or filming by using the spotlight. This is something we can think of ourselves by turning on a table lamp and using indirect light. Give it a try before your live video conference.

10. A mic can “always” be on

Speak at a natural normal volume. If you are too loud, your device will automatically adjust the voice level and no one will possibly hear you well. Be aware that the surrounding noise can be heard as well. Even a mewing cat or your noisy neighbor can be disturbing; however, sitting too close to a fridge or a van worsens the sound quality. What's more, if you snap your pen in your hand or rattle your notes, not to mention that you may be eating (which is a big indecency anyway) everyone will hear it louder than you. Also, before going live, test your microphone and speakers to make sure your “sound image” is OK. Always remember that a mic can be left on accidentally, so never curse while sitting behind a microphone.

11. Shut down other apps.

We are constantly under the bombardment of pop-up windows and notifications by Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, and other applications. Your attention can be easily diverted if you check these pop-up notifications. During a video conference, other applications should be shut down. In addition, it is not uncommon that you watch a show on your muted TV while video conferencing. Your viewers will definitely realize that your attention is distracted causing disengagement.

12. Identify yourself

Even though you are clearly visible in a video conference and your name appears, you should say hello at the beginning of a video conference and just chat with the attendees a little bit so that they can get used to your voice and image. During the conference call, if you haven't spoken in a while, identify yourself again when you start speaking. For instance, “Hi, I am Stephen, I just wanted to add that…,” or “Hey there, I am Kate, I am wondering if you could…” If necessary, raise your hand and make yourself visible.

13. Screen recording and feedback
Almost every video conferencing platform can record a session either on your computer or to the Cloud. Having your video conference session recorded is always useful but remember to ask for your attendees' consent. Providing feedback is also important to ensure the quality of the learning experience.

14. Screen-sharing

During your video conference, you will be very likely to share your screen or different applications (PowerPoint, PDF, video materials, etc.) through screen-sharing.
Remember to leave open only the corresponding application and close others; otherwise, unnecessary applications and/or personal information, your browser’s tabs, even your browsing history can be seen or leaked out.
Depending on the video conference platform, choose the “share computer sound” option that does not mute your mic, but the stream will be flawless without an echo.

15. After ending a video conference

Remember to end your video conference and make sure to turn off both your microphone and camera.
Always log out; otherwise, your internet usage will be still counting.

1, Készülj föl és légy pontos!
A megbeszélt időpont előtt 10 perccel állj készen az eseményre.
Értelemszerűen a tartalmi részre való felkészülés mindennél fontosobb. Ha illusztrációkat, „bejátszásokat” szeretnél megosztani a konferencia során, ennek technikáját gyakorold előre és készítsd elő – ne kelljen keresgélni a fájlok között, tudd a technikai megoldást, a sorrendet, hasznos, ha egyfajta forgatókönyvet, vagy legalább sorszámozott vázlatot készítesz. Készülj föl a résztvevők személyéből is. Egy-egy személyes megszólítás, érdeklődés vagy köszöntés segít lazítani az egyébként szokatlan és feszélyezett helyzetet.

2, Teremts megfelelő „társadalmi” környezetet a video konferenciádhoz.
Ha otthonról jelentkezel, avasd be az otthonlevőket. Ha kell, kérj csendet, vagy zárkózz be, vagy küldd el őket sétálni. Ha nem otthonról vagy kénytelen bejelentkezni, pláne nyilvános helyről, (amit csak rendkívül indokolt esetben tartok megengedhetőnek) különös gondossággal járj el a saját komfortérzeted biztosításán túl, a környezeted személyiségi jogainak megsértésének kockázataival, és még ezernyi más tényezővel kapcsolatban.

3, Öltözeted legyen természetes, de azért megfelelő az alkalomhoz
Ha van a konferencia szervezőinek (pl. a vállalatnak, vagy egyetemnek megfogalmazott öltözködési policy-ja azt otthon is kövesd.) Néhány munkavállalótól elvárják, hogy ugyanazt az öltözéket viseljék, mint amit az irodában viselnek, míg mások számára elfogadható, ha sokkal kényelmesebben öltöznek, mint általában a munkahelyen. De a kényelmes nem azt jelenti, hogy például pizsama, vagy susogós melegítő. (legalábbis nem a látszó részeken).
Egy két alkalom után – megfigyelve a video partner öltözködését – alkalmazkodj. Jót tesz, ha testre szabod megjelenésedet azon személyekhez, akikkel együtt vagy a konferenciában.
De túl sokat se fordíts a megjelenésedbe. (Egy vadítóan szexi friss alkalmai frizura, egy drága formális öltöny-nyakkendő, feltűnő ékszerek viselése, nem csak kényelmetlenné teszi a munkádat, de nevetségessé is válhatsz.)

4, Lehetőleg az arcod (a képed) legyen ugyanakkora, mint a többieké.
Ebben előre is meg lehet állapodni, de ha bizonytalan a helyzet és a résztvevők köre, készülj föl az esetleges korrigálásra (közelebb, vagy távolabb húzódás a kamerától).
Fontos, hogy ha video konferenciát szervezel, minden résztvevő külön-külön a saját képével, eszközével legyen jelen. Nem jó, ha az egyik kamera előtt többen ülnek és a többieknek egy totálképben kell megkeresni a parányi fejek közül, hogy melyik is beszél.

6, Ismerd meg az eszközt, amivel dolgozol.

Mindenekelőtt tudd, hogy hol van az a kis kamera, ami téged néz. Meg fogsz lepődni, hogy mennyivel jobban figyelnek rád a többiek, ha megtanulsz ebbe a kis kamerába beszélni. Ezt lehet gyakorolni is. Én például egy kis fehér korongot ragasztottam eleinte köré és az szinte vonzotta a tekintetemet. Ismerd meg a legfontosabb kezelőszerveket. Mindenekelőtt a „mute” gombot. Sokat segít, ha adott esetben a saját mikrofonodat „ki tudod keverni”.

Gyakorold az eszközöd és a videokonferencia szoftver használatát is. Ne élesben ismerkedj a berendezéssel és a programmal.

5, Ne küzdj túl sokat a háttereddel, de mégis fordíts rá tudatos figyelmet.

7, Törődj a testeddel

Helyezkedj úgy, hogy a kamera szembe kerüljön a szemeddel és lehetőleg szemmagasságba. Vagy úgy billentsd hátra az eszközt, hogy az arcod és a képernyő egymással szemben egymásra merőlegesen helyezkedjen el. Ha Tabletet, vagy más mobileszközt használsz – ne tartsd kézben, hanem fixen támaszd le. Szörnyű zavaró, ha konferencia résztvevői közül valakinek a képe folyamatosan billeg, ugrál, rázkódik.

Ahogy a nyilvános beszédnél, úgy ebben az esetben is lehetőleg a felsőtested legyen szabad és egyenes. Tudj szabadon lélegezni, tudd szabadon használni kezeidet. A kamera irányában (mögötte) minél kevesebb zavaró elem legyen. Például: szembe világító lámpa, másik monitor, stb. A kamerák, amik az eszközeinkben dolgoznak nagy látószögű optikával rendelkeznek. Ez azt jelenti, ha például úgy állítod be a kamerát, hogy a kezed is látszik előtted akkor az a valóságosnál sokkal nagyobbnak fog látszani. Ami mögötted van az a valóságos téri helyzetnél távolabbinak fog tűnni. Ezzel a hatással tudatosan is lehet alakítani a képet illetve a hatást.

8, Tedd az eszközt a megfelelő helyre!

A legkülönbözőbb eszközökkel veszünk részt egy-egy video-konferencián. Ezeknek az eszközöknek más- és más az ergonómiája. Egy asztali számítógép nagy képernyője általában az arcunk magasságában helyezkedik el, mi egyenes derékkal ülünk. A képernyő közel függőleges, a kamera pedig fölötte helyezkedik el és egy vízszintes képzeletbeli tengely húzható a szemünk és a kamera optikája közé. A legnagyobb valószínűséggel ebben az esetben jó lesz a kép és a testtartás is.

Ha könnyebb, kisebb, mobilabb eszközt használunk – jellemzően notebook, laptop - általában ugyanúgy az asztalra helyezzük, de tudnunk kell a képernyő kisebb így a beépített kamera is alacsonyabbra kerül, a képernyőt pedig a jó láthatóság miatt hátra döntjük. Így a kamera nem vízszintesen, hanem alulról fölfelé néz, mi pedig a képen - mint egy óriás - a gépünk fölé tornyosulunk, és kb. olyan szögben látszunk a képernyőn, mint egy a betegágy fölé hajoló ápolónő. Ezt érdemes elkerülni és a video-konferencia idejére az ilyen eszközt magasabbra elhelyezni. (Pl. pár könyvet alátenni.)

A kézben tartott mobiltelefonokkal „elkövethető”, ágyban fekve, díványon hasalva, fejen állva autóvezetés vagy sportolás közben, fürdőkádból, stb. stb. kamerahelyzetek képei, illetve a hozzájuk tartozó testtartások néha tökéletesek, de gyakrabban igen zavarosak, vizuálisan zajosak.

9 Keresd meg a megfelelő fényt!

A fény a barátod, ha látszol, és jól nézel ki, sikeres lesz video hívásod.

Ha tudsz, ülj ablak mellé, hogy természetes és elegendő fény essék az arcodra, hogy minden arckifejezésed jól látható legyen. Ugyanakkor ügyelj arra, hogy ne alakuljon ki az arcodon túl nagy fény-árnyék hatás. (A legkorszerűbb digitális eszközeink is hajlamosak a legvilágosabb pontra fényt mérni, és így ha az árnyék túl mély az a videón már egy fekete folttá válik.) Ezt a problémát a professzionális fényképezésnél, vagy filmezésnél a derítőfény használatával oldják meg. Erre akár mi magunk is gondolhatunk egy asztal lámpa bekapcsolásával és indirekt fényének használatával. Lehet kísérletezni és kipróbálni még az „éles” bejelentkezés előtt!

10, Gondolj az élő mikrofonra

Beszélj természetes normál hangerővel. Ha túl hangos vagy a digitális eszköz „önvédelemből” leszabályozza a hangátvitelt és a többiek egyáltalán nem fognak hallani.

Tudd és gondolj rá, hogy a környezetedben lévő hangok meglepően jól hallatszódhatnak a készüléken keresztül. És ez nem csak egy panaszosan nyávogó macska, a fal másik oldalán hangosan zsörtölődő szomszéd esetében kínos, de ha túl közel ülsz a hűtőszekrényhez, vagy egy ventillátorhoz, az is sokat ronthat a hangminőségeden. Sőt, ha a kezedben csattogtatod a golyóstolladat, vagy zörgeted a jegyzeteidet, esetleg eszel – iszol (ami amúgy is nagy illetlenség) azt mindenki jobban fogja hallani, mint téged. (Viszont - ha olyasmit beszélsz amit nem kéne másoknak hallani, vagy káromkodsz - azt biztosan mindenki hallani fogja! Soha ne tedd ezt!)

Az általad közvetített „hangképet” is tervezd meg, próbáld ki előre lehetőleg és kontrolláld!

11, Koncentrálj a helyzetre

Szereted megkapni a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram vagy TikTok frissítéseket? Megszoktad, hogy reflexből azonnal reagálsz is. Óriási a kísértés, hogy a video-beszélgetés során folyamatosan figyeld a felugró üzeneteket, a beállított hír-csatornákat. Sajnos ezeket a video konferencia idejére ki kell kapcsolni! Az se ritka, hogy konferencia-beszélgetés közben – mint egyfajta háttértévét – figyeled egy tv-csatorna lenémított műsorát. Kérlek, ne tedd! Egyrészt magaddal szúrsz ki, mert az amúgy is nehéz kommunikációs helyzetben fontos dolgokról maradhatsz le, másrész bizony látszik a többiek képernyőjén, hogy „játszol a pad alatt”, nem vagy elkötelezett.

12, Azonosítsd magad többször is

A technika – annak ellenére, hogy látszol, sőt a neved is kiíródik, a többiek képernyőjére – megosztja a résztvevők figyelmét. A beszélgetés elején jelentkezz be. Ha szükséges, mutatkozz be, beszélj egy kicsit, hogy a többiek megszokják a hangod és a képed. A konferencia-beszélgetés során, ha már egy ideje nem szólaltál meg, akkor, amikor megszólalsz, azonosítsd magad. Például: „Karin vagyok, és van egy kérdésem" vagy „Sziasztok, Károly vagyok, szeretnék hozzátenni ehhez pár gondolatot.” A megszólalásodat érdemes jól látható gesztussal, kézfelemeléssel, testtartás-váltással is jelezni.

13, Dokumentálj és adj visszajelzést

Eszközeink alkalmasak a képernyő-események rögzítésére. A Windows10 alapból tudja, de számtalan ingyenesen letölthető alkalmazás is elérhető. Én a Screencast recorderét használom. Nagy segítség, ha a konferencia, vagy távoktatás után rendelkezésedre áll egy teljes video dokumentáció az eseményről. Az esemény után adj visszajelzést a résztvevőknek. Ezzel növeled a saját népszerűségedet, a video-konferencia hatékonyságát és fixálod a tudást, amit a konferencia során szereztél.

14. Képernyő-megosztás

A videokonferencia során gyakran megosztunk a képernyőn különböző alkalmazásokat (PowerPoint, PDF, video anyagok stb.) Az ehhez szükséges alkalmazások legyenek eleve nyitva, a többi viszont legyen zárva. A feleslegesen nyitva hagyott alkalmazások és / vagy személyes információk, a böngésző, ha nyitva vannak és hozzáférhetőek, rosszindulatú adathalászok prédájává válhatnak.

A videokonferencia platformjától függően érdemes a „számítógép hangjának megosztása” lehetőséget választani, amely nem némítja el a saját mikrofont, mégis a hang visszhang-mentes lesz.

15, Az esemény lezárása után Győződj meg róla, hogy kijelentkeztél a rendszerből. Nincs kínosabb, mint egy „bekapcsolva felejtett” nyilvános mikrofon és kamera, nem beszélve a hálózat fölösleges foglalásáról és terheléséről.

HÁTTÉR

Az egész emberiséget érintő járvány miatt alapvetően megváltozott a hír-televíziózás vizualitása is. Ugyanakkor hihetetlenül felpezsdült a közösségi médiában is a mozgóképes kommunikáció. Már nem csak önkéntes döntés és vállalás, hanem szinte az egész bolygón kötelező lett például a digitális távoktatás, ahol elsődleges kérdéssé válik a hatékony „zajmentes” információátadás.

Az interneten, a közösségi médiában már hosszú évek óta természetes; a civilség, a fésületlenség, az informális viselkedés - a szabad száj. Ugyanitt a természetes, szabad, rendezetlen, keresetlen és általában különösebben nem átgondolt látvány is elfogadott.

A járvány miatti korlátozások, a jól fűtött stúdiók látogathatóságának ellehetetlenülése nem jelenti azt, hogy a már megszokott riportalanyok, politikusok, szakértők, celebek és ki tudja hányféle – amúgy a képernyőkön megszokott – szereplők nyilvánosság nélkül maradtak. Az otthonról jelentkező riportalany, szakértő, celeb, sőt maga a riporter is mindennapos látvány a professzionálisnak mondott – broadcaster – médiában.

A Médiaháló remek szolgáltatásai a Skype, a Whatsup, a Zoom, a Facebook és még ezernyi, egyéb – ahogy ezt már közel 10 éve tudjuk és beszélünk róla a szakmában és a kommunikációs iparban – broadcasterré, látszólag a profi televíziós műsorkészítőkkel egyenrangúvá tett sok százezer „civil” szereplőt. Bármelyik pillanatban előkaphatják telefonjukat, lezuttyanhatnak Tabletjük, vagy otthoni számítógépük elé és képüket ott találják a – valamelyik televízió professzionális csapata és technikája által előállított – osztott képernyő valamelyik felében. Balra a profi stúdiókép, jobbra egy alig látható sziluett a konyhaablak háttere előtt, vagy egy fölülről a billentyűket bámuló arc hátterében a mennyezetről lógó csillár vakító képével. Mintha a „bejelentkező” – akinek amúgy sokéves tapasztalata van a választékos beszédű jólöltözött, fodrászolt, sminkelt, riportalanyságban, soha nem vette volna észre, hogy hányan és milyen gondosan dolgoztak a stúdióban azon, hogy előnyösen legyenek megvilágítva, a képük legyen éles és jól komponált, hangjuk legyen jól hallható – érthető, a hátterükben ne legyenek zavaró pálmalevelek, vagy egyéb oda-nem illő díszletelemek.

Hirtelen új értelmet kapott a szereplőink és környezetük kinézete. Fésületlen, smink-nélküli arcok, gyűrött otthoni melegítők, civil lakás-részletek, fura faliszőnyegek, függönyök, virágállványok, vagy a nagyapa mennyezetig tornyosuló könyv-gyűjteménye, esetleg az újgazdag nappali egy részlete figyel be a vállak mögött.

Tudom, most ez vészhelyzet és nem az a legfontosabb, hogy hogyan néz ki, hanem az, amit mond. Sőt tudom azt is, hogy ez most egyfajta kényszer. De tudom azt is, (többször fel is hívtam már rá a figyelmet) hogy ez olyasvalami, amit egyébként soha nem gyakorolunk. Még nem része az általános műveltségnek, nem része a nevelésnek, az iskolai tananyagnak sem. Sőt nem is beszélünk eleget róla. Még például a kommunikációval és művészeti oktatással foglalkozó egyetemeinken se.

A vizuális kommunikáció ma már nem egy szakma belügye. Ugyanúgy része a kultúrának, mint a választékos beszéd, a metakommunikáció egyéb elfogadott és megszokott elemei. Elgondolkodtató, hogy az átlagemberek – nem profik – körében amennyire fontos a leírt, a kimondott szó, a pontos választékos fogalmazás, a világos művelt nyelvhasználat, az érthető beszéd, annyira mellékes és érdektelen a kommunikáció nagyobbik felét kitevő egyéb metakommunikatív elemek – elsősorban a vizualitás - tudatos alakítása a közösségi médiában.

A televíziózásban van egy mondás, – ami a játékfilmben szinte természetes – hogy ami a képen látszik, az soha nem véletlen. Ha a képen belül ott egy kép a falon, ha az előtérben ott egy tányér gőzölgő leves, ha az asztalon oda készített sakkfigurák látszanak – annak oka és dramaturgiai jelentősége van. Hosszú évezredek alatt alakult ki egy-egy társadalom szokás- és elvárás rendje mindarról, ami a nyilvános szerepléssel kapcsolatos. A kommunikáció komplex mikéntje minden kultúrának alapvető összetevője és meghatározója. Mindenütt a nevelés és oktatás meghatározó feladata a szép értelmes beszéd megtanítása. Ugyanígy a család, a nevelés és oktatás feladata a társas érintkezések nem verbális elemeinek a megtanítása és állandó gyakorlása, fejlesztése. Az alkalomhoz való öltözködéstől, a testtartáson át, a párbeszéd, az egymásra figyelés kultúrájáig ezerféle tudás. Ezekhez a kommunikációs helyzetekhez ki-ki neveltetésétől, képzettségétől, személyes ambícióitól függően alkalmazkodik, sőt tudatosan használja is ezeket, így alakítja saját kommunikációja sikerességét.

Ahogy elnézem a mostanában hír-televíziók képernyőit, a közösségi média videó kommunikációit, a távoktatás izgalmas felületeit, azért még nagyon az elején járunk annak az útnak, hogy eljussunk oda, ahol, és amikor a hatékony video kommunikáció az általános műveltség része, a kultúra elfogadott jó minőségű kommunikációs technikája lesz. Hogy minden átlagember a telefon után készség-szinten használja ezt a hétköznapi kommunikációs eszközrendszert is.

Ezért állítottam össze ezt a 14 pontból álló listát, amit ha esetenként végig gondolunk és odafigyelünk ezekre, akkor – mintha egy régi illemtan könyv jó tanácsait követnénk – remélhetőleg sikeresebb lesz a kommunikációnk.[1] A megfogalmazásokban a video-konferencia kifejezést széles értelemben – nyilván – a távoktatási helyzetekre gondolva is használom.

Dear Friend,

I’m happy to meet you and I am waiting excitedly about our common work in the next semester.

I'm Kristóf Asbót. Interior architect, film and tv director, a media expert. Over the past ten years, I’ve been focusing on mechanisms and value-creating possibilities of stories that appear in the net of media. I see myself not primarily as an artist but as a storyteller. When I am telling stories, I use moving pictures and architectural spaces. Maybe I’m a little bit biased about the net of media, but in the meantime, I love to criticize the life of contemporary digital communication.

Obviously, I believe in the epoch-making significance of the "medianet". I believe in all of its technological achievements, and I obviously see and worry about its possible negative future too.

Yes, I am worrying because the spread of this new technology is much more rapid as the rhythm of natural human adaptation and natural- and group selection.

The interlocking, the closing of the "medianet" around our planet, (just happening currently), is causing a social, political, cultural shock on almost the whole Earth. Likewise, I can see the shifting of the individual focuses of personal communication and emotional activity, which are both exciting and useful, but on the other hand, this phenomenon has more and more aspects that are dangerous to our physical existence as well as our mental state.

The semester in front of us is a practical course - that means, it will not be a series of theoretical lectures. What we will concentrate on the implementation of jointly defined tasks. We will precisely define them today and the next time.

The task of yours is to realize a complete project. It can happen individually - or if it is better - in pairs or in smaller groups. In the encounters (hours) ahead - everyone will report on the status of their own project, present the current sub-tasks, and work-related material. These are shared and reviewed together. We will jointly help the progress of the projects.

At the same time, I am planning to explore, watch and speak about some exciting examples of multimedia knowledge and technology. I hope we will explore some exciting examples together as well. I'd be happy if - for each Monday - someone from the group would surprise us and show an interesting and instructive example. The internet is an endless source of these projects. Let's go to the web and mine data!

Choose for the third week your own target, your own topic. Create your personal task according to your personality and interest. Everyone will present a concrete project plan in not more than 5 – 10 minutes. It is necessary to make a written document about it. One copy of it will be placed in our common archive after discussing the presentation. If somebody could not find a good theme – I will suggest some in the next week.

Multimedia as a creative tool and artistic form.

The meaning of the word: multimedia seems to be quite clear. Multi- means; simultaneously using multiple media devices to implement some kind of specific communication goal. According to media's original meaning, it is a material (painting canavas, paper, possibly a person, a network, etc.) who - wich, as a kind of carrier, can process, encode, and record a message. If it can do this, it makes the message portable and helps to send it to the target of the message. It is also crucially important for the targeted "recipient" to be able to understand (decrypt) the message carried by the medium.

Today, media is a very complex concept. It covers all of our physical devices and tools, technologies, knowledge, organization, and regulatory mechanisms for creating, transmitting, storing, processing, and consuming information.

The problematics of contemporary media around us - I hope - are well known here. I'm sure You are not only simple users but also active interpreters and increasingly active artists, aiming at influencing the operation of the media as well.

The slogan of METU's art education is: "If you like the world, show it. If you do not like it - change it "... and this applies to all the medium that can be interpreted as an independent entity.

The media is nothing more than a very complex and artificial network that transpires today, as the technology of human communication. And this is one of the most basic natural functions of mankind and each individual.

Our age is the age of the medianet . These are the days when the "medianet" closes around our planet and even expands to the interplanetary space. At the same time, the media seems to be gradually self-sustaining. It's becoming autonomous. Media is now characterized by automation, virtuality and reality blurring, and slowly becoming a personal individual artificial intelligence.

According to our classical knowledge, media personalities are real people or communities who consciously compete with each other to create content that utilizes the benefits of the media toolkit (efficiency, time and spatial extensibility, illustrability, immersivity). They reach the users to give the right answers, impressions, and to change their life.

This creative competition (where competitors include not only politicians, journalists, and artists, but more than two billions of active internet users) is growing steadily. And in the gloom, a more powerful and fearsome competitor arises. It was born based on interactive sensors, big data, artificial intelligence, the complex and uninterruptible network and It uses immersive media technology - as a self-developing content creator. There are only two questions. When do we start seeing this new player in the media like an independent entity? And when does the time come when it starts not only competing with the production of human content creators but becomes our enemy?

Turning back from philosophy and dystopic heights, I would like to draw attention to one thing here at the beginning of the semester. It is very clear, but still a very important part of the media, also of our course. It is nothing more than the individual consumer of the media. With five senses, individual emotional and intellectual skills, with specific cultural embeddedness. The targets and the consumers of the media products that we create and produce are real living individuals. The members of this group are your friends, the teachers of this school and the people around us on this planet.

And it's important to note that due to the highly impressive immersive technology of multimedia - human emotions and non-conscious perceptions and perceptions are more important than they were in traditional media. It is increasingly important that the contents of the creative message should be subjected to strong emotional effects. The goal is to find or bring the recipient in such an emotional state when the emotional and unconscious perception of the creative message can be born.

I do not want to talk about the 100,000-year history of media and its artistic genres now. (I hope everybody has studied them often in many different ways here in our campus too.) I just want to share some thoughts about the most important tool of the media. This is the story and story-telling.

What is the story? Understandable and shared human thoughts with a specially structured and coherent causal, independent interpretation. The story always has a beginning, a process, and an end. It is always clearly understandable and can be shared without any antecedent and comment. The story always contains its own human emotional (psychological) explanation.

To put it very simply a story is nothing more than human thoughts in a single, specific unified structure that is shared.

Any thoughts that go beyond the closed and unbreakable depths of our brain - are somehow objectified. It becomes a vibration of material particles (visible wavelengths, audible vibrations). There may be signals - signal systems, various codes, but also concrete objects, drawings, pictures, plastics, other artworks, built spaces, even events, dramaturgy, and content-based presentations.

These objectivations (the thoughts that became real objects) can ride a medium and connect to the media network. They are traveling and running to a media transfer station. In the transfer station, they are organized into sophisticated structures (technological, thematic, genre, target, target group and countless aspects) and will become accessible again to the media network. In good cases, media consumers can find it - they can perceive, detect, decode - and create new thoughts in their brains, based on the experiences of receiving.

The best thing (the main goal) is if the new thoughts and emotions born in the mind of the consumer are mindful or similar to the originators' original idea.

Storytelling is a real creation. A new reality is created all the time. The question is whether this new reality carries truth and is real at the same time? Reality becomes truth only if there is no one-sidedness, silence, false statement, and so on. Truth can only be real if it is related to the existence that is independent of us and governed by the natural laws of the world. (Of course, these laws include the billions of unrecognizable components of human souls as well.)

So, therefore, in the semester, we create stories that can be shared on the media network and can be delivered to your target audience. Do (enjoy) the experience of the arrival of your messages. It is a fantastic feeling for a communicator. Understand and appreciate the emotional effect that is triggered. Use all the tools of the media at the same time. Create stories based on images and voices, space and time. Plan the presentation. Create an interactive situation for communication. Do not forget, people have five senses. And you analyze and document all of this.

This is multimedia itself!

I think you are already highly educated and sensitive to your photographer's skills. I would like you - or rather just suggest – that you break out of the world of still pictures. Get started thinking in actions, shots, montages. Give preference to the concept of time slicing, against the moment. Create new time structures. Move from the flat world of photography and film to the exciting world of spatiality. Analyze the temporal possibilities of spatial representation. It is very important - not just the making part but the delivering and the presentation too.

Create a creative, effective communication environment around your creations and the viewers and users. Each project starts with a standalone and creative thought and will be finished with the design and implementation of creative content presentation. The "artwork" will in all cases be a living demonstration.

In the next weeks, you are going to shoot video and sound (learn and use the editor software Adobe Premiere). You get acquainted with interactive technologies and solutions. We deal with the technical and professional issues of VR and AR. Also with the inclusive attitude and the ergonomic questions of reception. We will analyze and interpret multimedia products, but above all, create and implement creative projects.

It could be a simple storytelling, but I'd be very happy if you make a multimedia presentation that affects all my senses.
