GPS Tester has been developed to primarily test the connection to the iPhone 3GS Core Location Framework that uses data received from phone cell towers and wifi hotspots, or GPS satellites. Sometimes these connection details are hidden from the user on other software, leaving you in suspense waiting for a good connection to be made which can take a while especially if you have moved a long way from your normal starting position or in a bad signal area due to large buildings or near tree cover. These regular position updates are achieved by pre setting, via the software, the GPS distance travelled before update is generated to ‘zero’ and to also set location accuracy to ‘best’. This means that the GPS will keep updating location details more or less continuously once a good signal has been detected and you are on the move. Initially your start up connection progress can be observed by seeing if the GPS fix number is increasing and by the horizontal and vertical accuracy, shown in metres, are becoming more or less accurate as the number of fixes increase. Once the horizontal accuracy is less than 50 meters the software will then automatically update the trip counters and store your trip distance and overall trip average speed. Basically once the accuracy displays turn to green, press the ‘Reset Start Position’ button to store your starting position and clear the data counters for your journey. Also included for testing are direction and speed indicator displays. These support true compass heading-related events which can always be seen on the main navigation screen when stopped and the GPS true direction made good when you are on the move. A conversion from degrees to compass points, and visa versa, is also shown below on the right hand side of the course display box. The Speed display has been set up to display UK speeding limits in GREEN up to below 30 mph which will change to ORANGE up until below 70 mph and to change to RED for speeds above this figure. These colour changes have been put in place so your peripheral vision can notice you entering and leaving different speed zones without taking your eyes off the road at any time. A conversion from mph to nautical knots is also shown below on the right hand side of the speed display box.
