• Free Parking is available daily at the Garden Park Plaza across from the East Academic Building where classes will be held. (Map it >>>)
• Check-In runs from 7:30 – 8:15 a.m. at the East Academic Building (Map it >>>)
• Once checked in, campers should be ready for opening session at 8:30 a.m. each day.
• Vending machines are available for snacks and beverages on your own as needed.
• Not sure what to bring? Here is a recommended list. We’ll provide paper and a pen in your Media Now bag.

Name Tags: 
Campers are required to wear their name tags at all times while at the camp with us.

I’ve used a few different calendars to kick off each school year during my 20 years of teaching and no two years have been the same.

Times change, technology changes and the focus the kids have changes so I need to make myself adaptable to all those variables as well. Having said that, there are some core things I feel need to get worked in at the start of each year to calibrate the crew get everyone (people who have been on staff for three years and those who have been on staff for three days) on the same page.

Here are some sample calendars you can pick and choose from to make your own. I’m sure your situation is different from mine so you may not be concerned about all of the items, but you are likely teaching things like interviewing skills to basic design principles. I work to script out some of each hour for things that I find important, I also leave time for my editors to have chunks of time for them to toss in things they see as important and to give them a chance to build the skills they will need to run the class and the staff for the remainder of the year.

We know you have a number of options in how to spend your time this summer. We couldn’t be more excited that investing in your own media skills is part of that. Because we know you could have chosen to sit by the pool, work another shift at that summer job or sit around watching YouTube videos, we want to help you maximize your time with us where instead of watching videos, for example, you make them.

With our small class sizes we are able to customize the experience to what you, the camper, want to get out of it. To do that, you need to come with a goal or plan in mind. Don’t know what that is exactly? Talk to your adviser before you arrive. Take full advantage of your time with our top-notch instructor staff and keynote speakers. This is not only a chance for you to be a better journalist for your school, but you can make connections that will serve you throughout your career.

You can tell us what you want to get out of camp in a few different ways.

We will do everything we can on our part to push you to the next level in your skills. The rest is then up to you. Show up ready to soak it all in, work hard and…yes, play a little too.

Another hint?  Sign up EARLY. While we have a number of classes to choose from, seats are limited within each one. To get your first choice, register early. Once a class is full, we will contact you as we place you in your second choice course.

We’re just FOUR WEEKS away from Media Now Drake and there are just a few things to note about your arrival to camp on Sunday, July 9.

Check-In: 

• Eat Lunch BEFORE you check in. (Lunch is not included for our camp on Sunday)

• Check-In runs from Noon – 1:30 p.m. at Goodwin-Kirk Dorms on University Avenue.

• Once checked in, campers can meet in the main lobby by 1:45 p.m. and the Media Now Camp staff will walk campers over to the opening in Olmstead Center or feel free to use the campus map and walk there on your own. (It’s the next building over.)

• Opening Session is at 2:01 p.m.

• Parking for the Duration of Camp: Park on the Olmsted Center Visitor Parking Lot. You will receive a hang-tag for your vehicle. Student car keys will need to be turned in to camp staff to be tucked in a lock-box until check-out. This is for the safety of all campers. They have no need to use their vehicle once on campus.

Hey Roomie!
If you specified a roommate, we’ll start there and do our best to honor that (4 per room). If you didn’t specify someone, not to worry. We organize to the best that we can by request, then school and finally by course. In some cases your adviser has also submitted a housing list. If that’s the case, we honor that above requests. (Please do not request someone now or check on your roommate assignment, you will find out when you check-in).

Room Key & Food Pass
The residence hall will have a key for your room and we’ll provide you with a name tag and suggest you keep it tucked in a safe place. We’ll provide you with meal cards each day, so pay attention during our group meetings so you don’t miss out on the delicious details.

Parent Invite!
We don’t want you to miss out on all the fun! You’re invited to attend our closing awards ceremony on Wednesday, July 12. The all-camp awards ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m.

Tour of Campus?
As a camper you’ll be running all over campus with your class assignments and group activities, but if you’re wanting an official campus tour and visit with the Admissions Office, please contact them directly by visiting their website >>>

Up tonight?

Here’s what you need to know:

• Remember some classes are in different rooms for tomorrow, check your schedule!
• Closing Ceremony is 10:30 AM tomorrow after class in Waters Auditorium, Waters Hall. Meet us there for all the best of this week.
• After closing head back to the dorms to check out. You’ll need to return your room key and meal ticket (or they will charge you).
• If you are riding the bus back to St. Louis or Kansas City, pack your bags and be ready in the lobby by 12:30 to depart. We will provide you with a travel meal.

Tie dye, Music, Capture the flag and a Samsung Smart TV for Just Dance, Youtube Mad-ness and all around meet-your-fellow camper time!

Here’s what you need to know:

• Room check is at 11:00 p.m. Have your showers taken and be back to your rooms to check in with Lydia and Jarrin. Noise needs to be down and out by Midnight.
• Common area for boys/girls is all in the main lounge or just outside the dorms during activity time. Otherwise, girls are on their own floor, boys on theirs.
• Anyone leaving their car in the lot for the camp needs to turn in their keys to Lydia tonight. I think there are five campers left we need to collect from.
• Vending machines are available off the main lounge (around the corner from the laundry station).
• You can order food if it’s delivered before 11:00 p.m.
• Exterior doors lock at 11:00 p.m. as well.
• Breakfast is 7:30 – 8:20. Opening session is back at A&S Allen Auditorium at 8:30.
