Blogs, Podcast, and Video Blogs/Podcast can be link by the people involve in the shows themselves. This new "network" involves more social networking than actual program networking, but it still brings together a collection of content that would be more tailored to the consumer's taste. There are several factor we will look at: what are the context of the new network, an example of a new network, how it benefits Blogs, Podcast, Video Blogs/Podcast, and Advertisers, and how to make a formal new network.

The old network center itself in one media, even thou its parent company owned more than one type of media. Either it was a television network, radio network, etc. The main attribute they would share is there brand name, example ABC and ABC Radio. ABC has a variety of programing geared toward a multitude of audiences, but ABC Radio is a loss collection of radio stations that feature ABC News briefs every hour. They do not share on air personality's, content (other than news), and do not benefit each by co-branding or promoting each other.

There is an exception to this rule, ESPN ®. The ESPN brand is dawn on a multitude of different avenues of distribution, (ESPN®, ESPN Radio®, ESPN.com®, ESPN The Magazine®, etc) for content for all types of media. Each entity has exclusive content, but there are crossed promoted, intertwined with each other, and all share the in the assets of ESPN. For example, Certain ESPN broadcasters have radio shows on ESPN Radio (examples), and also write articles on ESPN the Magazine and/or ESPN.com. Certain programs and content are shared on different cable channels or even different distribution channels (examples). Also ESPN is expanding into other channels of the distribution of there content, like Podcast, V Cast® from Verizon®, etc. ESPN is the model for the 21 century network in the big media world. Next, look at the networks in the micromedia world.

What should company X buy to strengthen the strategic market position. I live by the mantra, Why build it when I can buy someone who does this function a lot better than I can. First we will look at a service I used a lot, Amazon.

The Shopping List

Netflix- This is also a service I love. With there rich database of user preference of movies and recommendation engine would be a prefect fit. Especially since Netflix got out of the DVD sales business. The main problem is the Netflix video streaming service and Amazons Video On Demand, Which one would have to die( my vote would be the Amazon Video On Demand). I left out the biggest point, Amazon the could dominate another distribution channel and leverage the use of more distribution center.

Gamefly- Same reasons for the to buy Netflix. They are the Netflix of video games.

Book Swim- Netflix for books

In fact buy any company that is in a similar business as Netflix, just in a different product.

Staying in the Book by mail service Book Renter and Clegg are textbook renting services. The textbook business is very lucrative business, I remember how much I blew on book in college.

Valve Software- I know they are known for video game development, but there Steam service has and is a distribution means of choice for delivery video games. Amazon has already started there own service for delivery of causal games, but they are going to have to make some big strides quick because of the days of the major consoles selling there games on physical media are numbered.

Buy more blogs or website that review products. Or, better yet buy some podcast and integrate them in to your podcast network.

They can't buy this, but they need to do it, make one app for all of your digital media services. I have one app for the Knidle, another for the mp3, and one for downloading movies, which is Windows only. Make one app to rule them all, then witness a halo effect when people of these individual services notice all these other service. Apple does it with iTunes, so should you.

This is not a buy, but another suggestion. Panter with Project Gutenberg or other open source ebook and audio book sources to explain book library with free content. People love free content.

You might be asking what does this have to do with media. More than likely you are not cause you already know. Amazon is the biggest online retailer of physical media and in making inroads into digital distribution channels. Anything this company does, as a content maker, you should pay close attention.

If you have anymore to add to the list go ahead

Book Swim
I can not sit back and think, this isn't just these companies going against each, we are at the being of changing the way work and play on a computer. This is not a battle of companies, this is a battle of platforms. The Internet or the Operating System. If you think of this issue in those terms, it changes where the battle lines are draw and who is on which side. I would say that this is a three (yes three) sided war.

The Internet side where the whole Web 2.0 startup movement (not Google) is the driving force behind the rise of this new platform.

The other side in naturally to Operating system side which you'll find Microsoft and every Unix/Linux (that includes Apple's OS X).

The last side is the crazy side of doing both. (That will be the subject of a post in the future)

Now how do you determine who is on what side, easy, money. If a company make the majority of its revenues from a certain activity, then that's what side the are on. It makes it easier that way. So Microsoft is in the Operating System camp (I'm not ignore there live strategy and MSN, I will get to it later, and in other post). Yahoo!, Google, eBay, and the bunch are on the Internet side. The company that does both ... Future post.

In war, every side had their advantages and disadvantages, this war is no different, but a groups greatest strength is more than likely its strongest weakness. Let start with the Internet side.

Advantages

Access Data from any where (provide there is a broadband connection, dial up and Web 2.0 apps do not work to well)

Hype (Everybody doing it)

Still in the being of the boom/bubble

VC's pouring money into good projects

User orienting

Industry in its infancy

A lot of the services are free

Low startup cost

Many new innovative technologies

Resemble offline program counterparts

No program mantince

Disadvantages

Hype (problem everybody is doing it)

VC's pouring money into crappy projects

Industry in its infancy

Some services do not have profit orientate business models (sound familiar)

Too many copycat services (how many Digg clones, RSS readers, and AJAX home pages do we really need)

Too many new innovative technologies (the is going to be a shake out of these new technologies)

Low startup cost (lost of copy cat and crappy services/site)

No offline Mode

Data beyond user control

Security beyond user control

Next the Operating System
Advantages

Mature Technology

Few Dominate Platforms (Windows and Unix derivatives are the two platforms)

Lots of active development

Lot of apps

The Dominate Platform

Online & Offline Mode (apps still works weather online or not, does not need the internet)

Data in user's possession

User controls security (Somewhat, if the user keeps up with patches and updates, and install security software)

Disadvantages

Mature Technology

Domonite Platform

Program Mantince-Patches & Updates

Security beyond user control (if developer stops updating software, then users are screwed)

Too many variants ( Too many versions of Linux and Windows Vista)

Now that the lines have been drawn, the battle between the "cloud" and the "OS" has begun. A push and pull within each player on either side, Google making a browser, Microsoft's Windows Live and Mesh, to make inroads in each others territory, which supports my option 3 of the war. We should look at both sides, examine the in wars, and predict which companies and/or platforms will survive.

The days of the excepting all the crap that Big Hollywood Media Giants release for the masses to consume are nearing its end. Now the consumers have a choice. An outlet where media content of there personal choice is not only respected, but is expected and demanded. In the new outlet, a consumer can find information on any topic in a mutliply forms of media by people who are passionate about that topic. Or the ability to watch, listen, or read any program where and whenever a customer wants. This outlet is called small media or Micromedia.
Why Micomedia? Two reasons. One, most of this media is consumed on a small portable media device, mp3 player, portable media player, pda, or cell\smartphone. Reason two, a lot of this media is made by small production teams and cost very little to produce. Now you might be asking what is the micromedia people are consuming? One of them your are reading right now, a blog. Micromedia is the world of blogging, podcasting, picture blogs, online comics, flash media(games and movies), and machinima. All of these productions can be done on a very small budget, not a lot of people, and put on various media devices. The great thing about micromedia is the barriers to entry are low. Anybody can get into this business. This can be good and bad(that is a dissucion all to itself).
Within the coming day, this blog Mediaology101 will be analyzing each segment of the micromedia, the advantages and disadvantage, opprotunities and pitfalls, and the best way to enter each segment. Mediaology101 main purpose is to analyze the industry of micromedia as a whole, looking at trends, and predicting what the industry's future. The analysis will first be looking at blogs, then podcasting, piture blogs, online comics, flash, and last machinima.
Our sister blog Mediatech101(which this same post is on) looks at the hardware, software, and services that are offered or need to be offered in micromedia. First will be a look at RSS\Atom, then audio format wars, video format wars, blog search engines, and analysis of services in each segment.
I hope people can enjoy and benefit from both of these blogs.

The sersis called "The Basics" will cover the foundation of the mircomedia model and movment in its history, current forms, and then a look into its future. First in this sersis will be "Micromedia: What the Hell Is It?", explaining what all "this" is. Next will be an examination of blogs called "Blogs: How Mircomedia All Began. After that will be podcasting, "Podcasting: The Newest Big Thing". The video blogs/podacting, "Video: The Next Big Thing". After than will be picture blogs, "Photo Blog: Small But Important".
