Condoms for Elementary Students

It’s been sometime since I heard debates on health education for students so that it worried me more than shocked upon reading a news today “Condoms available for elementary students in Cape Cod, Province town, Massachusetts”.

Kindergarten to 5th grade can now ask a condom if they want to. What will they do with it? Play and make it a balloon? For me it is too early for kids to be expose to it. High school maybe but not a kindergarten. Some parents express skepticism about this idea but officials say there’s no set of age for sexual activity to start. I understand they are thinking more of prevention rather than on dealing with problems after it arise. In fact, they argue more over whether the policy is too restrictive for students than debating whether the . condoms should be available for them or not. They emphasize though that students should be given counseling and information on abstinence if they ask for it.

We’ll let’s wait and see if this policy will work. As we all know kids are very curious but some may feel shy to ask for it from a nurse for sure. Would the school nurse inform the parents if the students starts asking for it? I hope they should so that the parents will be able to help guide their children too. I just don’t think if it is all right for students if their parents will know.

Happy Father’s Day Med Pro’s

There is nothing so sweet to give the father’s who work in Medical Field some words of gratitude for the sleepless hours of night shifts, the sweats running down their faces to tackle the busy days while being able to give their children and family some quality time and support.

Being a father is not an easy task to do. One has to work hard in order to be financially stable for the family to survive the everyday expenditures. To be able to provide good education for the children and save for their future. But it doesn’t end there. Being a father, one has to be emotionally strong to be able to protect and help the family in their moral and emotional needs. A father is always ready to protect the family whenever problems arise. It is their fatherly instinct that give them the power to be strict most of the times. It is not easy to deal with children especially teenagers when you want most of the rules to be followed and they aren’t following at all. Too afraid to let them go while watching them grow. These are just some few things to mention of being a father.

So this Father’s Day I want to give all the fathers especially in the Medical Field a very warm greetings, “Happy Father’s Day!” I salute you and feel very proud of you!

Running out of sleep

Twitter made me know events of people’s lives in and out of their homes and work place. I really praised to the full extent whoever authored Twitter. He is a genius. I can say what I want and interact with people I don’t even know in all walks of life 24/7. While I followed people in the medical field, I learned these were the usual posts they included.

Twitter post1: # lack of sleep
Twitter post2: # burnt out
Twitter post3: # sleeping in classroom
Twitter post4: # need a break
Twitter Post5: # take a nap
Twitter post6: # exhausted
Twitter post7: # graveyard shift

Why is it such a usual event in medical people’s lives? Someone asked me in twitter how much is the ideal sleep for medical students? I can only say the normal sleep pattern of a normal person but not an ideal sleep of a medical student. Perhaps, it depends. Some have made an idea of how to manage their time well so as to have a normal sleep pattern but I guess it’s not an 8 straight sweet and sound sleep.. So why are people getting into medical school anyway if only to be exhausted and experience lack of sleep? I recently read a tweet and in fact I re-tweeted it that some nurses react with little sleep. I have read the full article and one line there stated ” Some nurses are better than others at remaining alert during successive 12-hour shifts, U.S. researchers found. (http://bit.ly/9LW1Od). So I guess in some people little sleep can somewhat help to be alert in their respective work areas.

Therefore, I guess it’s just a matter of managing time or learning to adapt the pattern of work or study schedules. It may be hard to deal with it at first but probably will be use to it in the later time.

Let’s call for a celebration! Happy Nurses Week to all!

It’s been a year since I started filling in contents of this blog. It was Nurses Week. Now, it’s another year to call for a celebration.

By the way, before we submerge our thoughts on this valuable occasion. May I ask this question first. “Do you celebrate it anyway? Do you think it’s worth to celebrate it?” As far as I’m concern, I believe we ought to celebrate this event as it signifies the value of care we give to our patients. How much time we devote to make us worthy to be given this privilege to celebrate. I have been working for quite sometime now and I think after all the sacrifices, the tears, the sweats, the bitter sweet experiences we have to call for a “break” and yes celebrate! Nursing is not a job, it’s a vocation. We have to love what we are doing and embrace the commitment to be able to give the best that we can do. Perhaps, this week serves as a recognition for the efforts we have given and the special skills we have continued to improve in order to serve the majority in need.

Now, do you celebrate Nurses Week? I think you are. So no matter how you do it. This week is all about you and me and all the nurses in the world who share their talents and abilities in order to have a healthier tomorrow.

Happy Nurses Week everyone and congratulations!!!

Birth Control Patch

Ortho Evra as it was commonly called was introduced to the market in 2002. Since then 23 deaths of women were associated with it.

What is this patch all about? Birth control patch is a thin, beige, plastic patch that sticks to the skin primarily to prevent pregnancy. Like other methods of birth control, the birth control patch releases hormones(estrogen and progesterone)but in Ortho Evra it has more levels of estrogen compared to birth control pills. Hormones are chemicals made in our bodies. They control how different parts of our bodies work. Pregnancy will not take place if there is no egg to join with sperm. The hormones in the Ortho Evra patch prevent pregnancy by thickening a woman’s cervical mucus. The mucus blocks sperm and keeps it from joining with an egg.The hormones also thin the lining of the uterus.Thus, this could prevent pregnancy by keeping a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus.

Apparently, there are serious side effects associated with the use of it. Among the side effects reported are blood clots, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, heart attacks, stroke and death. Please refer here:

What’s new this year?

Another year had passed, it’s now 2010. It’s time to start a new plan, new perspective, new life and probably new friends.

Last year was a busy one for me, yet I managed my time. Studying was fun with school friends around. My work was quite stressful but thinking I was doing it to save lives it was worth my time. My personal life was great. Too many problems here and there. Thanks God it’s another year.

When I was checking my Facebook list of friends I noticed there wasn’t any addition to it. I felt sad thinking I was adding some people the last time I opened it and they were ignoring my request. Should I stop being friendly? I just wanted to have a lot of friends. Probably I get lots of them this year so then I’m not giving up I wish to have more friends this 2010.

Have you had the time to help the people in need? Or to listened to the cry of those in agony. Perhaps you had offered a hand and even lifted your lips to smile. I have these to carry on this year. These will be my never ending deed, I wish I will not get tired of doing this.

I will not change anything this year. If I have then I will surely do it a lot better.

I hope my new years greetings isn’t at all too late.

Born at full term at Lima’s maternity clinic, her child was taken through a caesarian operation done by Dr. Lozada and Dr. Busalleu.

Her son was weighing 2,700 grams or 5.92 pounds, was well formed and was in good health. The Child and her young mother were able to leave the clinic after only a few days.

Lina Medina (born September 27, 1933, in Paurange, Peru) is the youngest confirmed mother in medical history, giving birth at the age of 5 years, 7 months and 21 days.

Born in Peru, Lina was brought to a hospital by her parents at the age of 5 years because of increasing abdominal size. She was originally thought to have had a tumor, but her doctors determined she was in her seventh month of pregnancy. Dr. Gerardo Lozada took her to Lima, Peru, prior to the surgery to have other specialists confirm that Lina was in fact pregnant. A month and a half later, on May 14, 1939, she gave birth to a boy by a caesarean section necessitated by her small pelvis. The surgery was performed by Dr. Lozada and Dr. Busalleu, with Dr. Colareta providing anaesthesia. Her case was reported in detail by Dr. Edmundo Escomel to La Presse Medicale, along with the additional details that her menarche had occurred at 8 months of age (or 2 1/2 according to a different article[1]), and that she had had prominent breast development by the age of 4. By age 5 her figure displayed pelvic widening and advanced bone maturation.

Her son weighed 2.7 kg (6.0 lb; 0.43 st) at birth and was named Gerardo after her doctor. Gerardo was raised believing that Lina was his sister, but found out at the age of ten that she was his mother. He grew up healthy but died in 1979 at the age of 40 of a disease of the bone marrow.

Lina Medina never revealed the father of the child, nor the circumstances of her impregnation. Dr. Escomel suggested she might not actually know herself by writing that Lina “couldn’t give precise responses”. Lina’s father was arrested on suspicion of rape and incest, but was later released due to lack of evidence.[1] Medina later married Raúl Jurado, who fathered her second son in 1972. They live in a poor district of Lima known as “Chicago Chico” (“Little Chicago”). She refused an interview with Reuters in 2002.

In young adulthood she worked as a secretary in the Lima clinic of Dr. Gerardo Lozada, the doctor who performed her caesarean section. Lozada gave her an education, and helped put her son through high school.
