The 11th Baltic Congress in Laboratory Medicine will be devoted to a
very challenging programme focusing on the recent advances in different
areas of laboratory medicine and human genetics. To create the
opportunity to discuss the latest research, submission of abstracts
would be much appreciated. In addition, the Congress will include an
exhibition by the diagnostic industry and it will form an integral part
of the meeting.
The Congress will take place in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania and
its largest city, known in written record from Gediminas’ letters in
1323. Today Vilnius has emerged as a modern European city.

Main topics in scientific program are:

Biology and Laboratory Diagnostics of Atherosclerosis and Related Diseases

    Laboratory Hematology and Coagulation disorders

    Cancer Biology and Tumour Markers

    Clinical Immunology and Allergology

A pocket-size microscope accessory developed by Finnish scientists will be accurate to one hundredth of a millimetre.

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, the leading multi-technological applied research organisation in Northern Europe, has developed an optical accessory that turns an ordinary camera phone into a high-resolution microscope. The device is accurate to one hundredth of a millimetre. Among those who will benefit from the device are the printing industry, consumers, the security business, and even health care professionals. A new Finnish enterprise called KeepLoop Oy and VTT are already exploring the commercial potential of the invention. The first industrial applications and consumer models will be released in early 2012.
Malaria Parasites Amid Red Blood Cells

The invasion has begun. Microscopic magnification shows Plasmodium falciparum—the most virulent of the four malaria parasites that infect humans—destroying red blood cells in the liver. It digests a cell's hemoglobin, multiplies inside to the point of rupturing the cell, and rapidly spreads a new generation of infection.

The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) is one of the most important values in the clinical bacteriology.
Researchers
from the department of Biomedical Engineering, University of
Wisconsin-Madison, published about a portable self-loading technology
for determining MIC values in journal Lab on a Chip this week. The device is kept as simple as possible and requires only a single user pipetting step to introduce the sample.
Making transfusion medicine information accessible for all

A common challenge faced by many healthcare organizations is the lack of access and availability of transfusion medicine information to clinicians. Information on sample availability, antibodies, and transfusion reactions may not be easily accessible.
The lack of accessibility can cause delays in transfusions, increased patient time in the operating room, increased transfusion service workload, increased patient risk, and poor customer service—all significant negatives for both clinicians and patients.

Learning objectives of this article

The reader will be able to:

Identify common problems in providing pertinent transfusion medicine information to healthcare workers.

Understand the impact the lack of information has on transfusion medicine practices.

Identify signifi cant transfusion information that can be made available using the Quick View electronic page or a similar system.

Describe the steps involved to develop and implement a similar software system.

Compare traditional and newer testing methodologies in transfusion medicine in terms of effi ciency and safety.

Discuss underlying reasons for improving efficiency and safety in transfusion medicine.

Malaria deaths are down but progress remains fragile

Malaria mortality rates have fallen by more than 25% globally since 2000, and by 33% in the WHO African Region, according to the World malaria report 2011, issued today by WHO. This is the result of a significant scaling-up of malaria prevention and control measures in the last decade, including the widespread use of bed nets, better diagnostics and a wider availability of effective medicines to treat malaria.

The World malaria report 2011 is an annual publication from WHO. It summarizes information received from malaria-endemic countries and malaria control partners, and analyses prevention and control measures according to a comprehensive set of indicators. This year's report builds primarily on data received from countries for the year 2010. For the first time, the report contains individual profiles for 99 countries with ongoing malaria transmission.
Virtual Lab

Virtual Lab is a Medical Research Council project for schools. It offers an interactive web-based experiment designed to allow anyone, anywhere in the world, to engage with contemporary medical research. The aim of the website is to increase confidence among young people to discuss science; to provide experiences in support of their university applications and career development.

There is currently a scarcity of opportunities for students to access
contemporary research. Modern medical research requires expensive
equipment and reagents and highly specialised expertise, but Virtual Lab
provides a means for students to take part in a research project. The
web-based user interface invites you to become a virtual apprentice
researcher in a real study.
e-Bug - A place to play games and learn about microbes

e-Bug is a European wide antibiotic and hygiene teaching resource for junior and senior school children.

This resource not only reinforces an awareness of
the benefits of antibiotics, but also teaches prudent antibiotic use
and how inappropriate use can have an adverse effect on an individual's
good microbes and antibiotic resistance in the community. The areas of
hand and respiratory hygiene and spread of infections in the community
are also covered, including teaching how to wash hands most effectively.

The e-Bug pack is accompanied by an interactive
website hosting complementary games, interactive quizzes, disease fact
sheets and much more.
