and I fixed a number of articles for you and her to review for
scholarships and other programs and again give the Philippine Option as
the cost would leave her with a much smaller debt for 4-5 years in
medical school here and with Timmie and me both having Philippine links
it would give her a new exciting job prospect after graduation.

Cebu Doctors has an excellent education program and I have provided
links to it to read more and they run one of the main best hospitals
here in the city and it is where I go for treatment.

Regardless, her next year of international experience if it materializes
and international medical education would give her many new options for
career choice such as World Health and State Department and USAID and
many international contractors. With excellent medical benefits and
retirement from government work.

I think she might also enjoy the Peace Corps volunteer program after her
degree and if my friend becomes Deputy Director for Asia it would give
her an excellent addition to her resume and more international experience.

Title V. Health Care Workforce

Increasing the Supply of Primary Care Providers in Underserved
      Communities

The Act will increase the number of primary care providers,
including doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and
dentists in the areas of the country that need them most. Through
the National Health Service Corps, the Act provides significant
funding for scholarships and loan repayment for doctors, nurses
and other providers who provide medical, dental, and mental health
care in urban and rural areas that have a shortage of health
professionals. It also increases the loan repayment amount and
enables additional flexibility for providers to meet their service
      requirements.
It creates a loan repayment program for pediatric, mental and
behavioral health specialists who provide services to children and
adolescents in underserved areas or with underserved populations.
The Act also supports scholarships and loan repayments for
disadvantaged students who commit to work in medically underserved
areas and who serve as faculty in participating institutions.

Looming worker shortage. That’s not a phrase one expects
to hear at a time of high unemployment. But when experts look at the Bureau of
Labor Statistics’ list of the fastest-growing occupations, that’s what they see:
more than a million new jobs on the horizon by 2018, and a worker pool that may
not be trained to fill them.
Such a list was first compiled in 1946, just
after the end of World War II, to help veterans on the G.I. Bill make smart
educational choices. One need only pay attention to news reports to guess where
the current shortages may be: eight of the fields in the top 10 categories are
health care or wellness related; one is in financial services; and the other is
in the information technology field.

Determining The Best Medical Assistant Education Cost
There are many space and places for people to earn a living and
eventually have the opportunity to follow a career. The medical
assistant is responsible for administrative and clinical needs and
various other responsibilities. These responsibilities would depend on
the size of the medical care facility where you would be working as an
intern or and extern (the latter is a much shorter program than the
internship program). An internship can also lead to a long-term
appointment.

But, points out Michael Wolf, an economist with the bureau, “The mere
fact that a category is fast growing does not mean you can get a job in it.” For
most of these occupations, training (sometimes years of it) is necessary.

1. BIOMEDICAL ENGINEER
Job Growth: 72 percent, or 12,000 new jobs
by 2018
Salary: $82,550 mean; $103,000 for scientific and technical
consultants
The Field: This relatively new specialty bridges the medical and
engineering disciplines, with emphasis on engineering. Biomedical engineers
design and build innovative devices (artificial limbs and organs, new-generation
imaging machines) and improve processes (for genomic testing, or making and
administering drugs).
Why It’s Growing: Thank the quick clip of
technological advances. Pharmaceutical and genomic industries, in particular,
are “exploding,” says Helmut H. Strey, associate professor of biomedical
engineering at Stony Brook University, which has about 100 students in its
master’s degree and Ph.D. programs.
Training: If you’re attracted to this
field, you aren’t afraid of math, chemistry, physics and engineering, and
already have the coursework. Engineers and biology majors are likely candidates
for career transitions, though Dr. Strey believes that engineers will find it
easier to complete required biology coursework than biologists will getting
through the engineering. Either way, a master’s is a must.
•
2. NETWORK
SYSTEMS AND DATA COMMUNICATIONS ANALYST
Job Growth: 53 percent, or 156,000
new jobs by 2018
Salary: $76,560 mean; $99,000 in top industries (rail
transportation, natural gas); $105,000 in tech corridors like San Jose and Santa
Clara, Calif.
The Field: Analysts handle the virtual nuts and bolts of an
I.T. department — designing, building, testing and maintaining information
systems, internal or Internet-wide. They also know network and data
communications hardware and software.
Why It’s Growing: The mobile data
trend (smartphones, tablets) and “cloud computing” (subscription-based or
pay-per-use services like apps and data storage) mean companies that scaled back
I.T. departments in the 2008 economic downturn are hiring again. As Jonathan
Hill, assistant dean of Pace University’s Seidenberg School of Computer Science,
says, just about every organization needs someone with these skill sets. “If you
have the degree, you can work at Sloan-Kettering, the F.B.I., PNC Bank or the
New York City Ballet,” he says. “If you are good, you will be employed.”
Training: A background in computer science is not necessary — “These are
very teachable skills,” Mr. Hill says — though students going back to school may
need to complete prerequisites. At Pace, students come from across the spectrum,
from philosophy majors to working adults “pulled to the tech end” of their
company’s operations. Certificates are useful for career changers, and many
colleges will apply those credits toward a master’s. Curriculums typically cover
networking, database and Web design, mobile technology and Internet
architecture.
•
3. HOME HEALTH AIDE
Job Growth: 50 percent, or 461,000 new jobs by 2018
Salary: $21,620 mean; up to $40,000 in affluent metropolitan areas
The
Field: Home health aides assist the infirm in their homes or at an
assisted-living or nursing home facility, preparing meals, doing light
housekeeping and bathing patients. These licensed workers also take vital signs,
administer drugs and operate medical equipment.
Why It’s Growing: With our
aging population, this field’s high rank should be no surprise. Demand already
outstrips supply, says William Dombi, vice president at the National Association
for Home Care and Hospice, and that seems unlikely to change. “Low pay and tough
work,” he says, mean burnout, turnover and continual recruitment. But the job
has its rewards for those with the desire to help people and the physical and
emotional constitution to do it. It is also a way to test the waters for nursing
school.
Training: Community colleges, hospitals and home health care
agencies provide programs for licensure — usually 75 hours of training (some
states require up to 120 hours). At Bergen Community College in Paramus, N.J., a
new 76-hour course teaches the basics. Watch that programs actually fill
licensing requirements.
•
4. PERSONAL AND
HOME CARE AIDE Job Growth: 46 percent, or 376,000 new jobs
by 2018
Salary: $20,280 mean; psychiatric sector and government agencies pay
the most.
The Field: Same duties as home health aides, minus the medically
oriented tasks. No license required.
Why It’s Growing: See No. 3.
Training: On the job, though certificates from vocational schools may
enhance employment opportunities.
•
5. FINANCIAL EXAMINER
Job
Growth: 41 percent, or 11,000 new jobs by 2018
Salary: $71,000 mean; the
federal executive branch pays the most.
The Field: Call it “C.S.I.:
Accounting.” Examiners, a k a internal auditors or compliance officials, dig
into an organization’s books, investigating transactions and minute detail to
ensure compliance with the law. Accounting, finance or business backgrounds a
must.
Why It’s Growing: Implosions and scandals in the last few years
involving the banking and insurance industries mean more companies are being
scrutinized, internally and externally, and taking proactive steps to stay out
of trouble.
Training: Becoming a financial examiner is less a career change
than a career tweak. Many examiners have been singled out by their company and
trained on the job, and licensing is not necessary. But others find status, job
opportunities and a higher salary with credentials, or they may want to hang out
their own shingle. The Society of Financial Examiners and the Institute of
Internal Auditors offer self-directed courses and exams toward certification.
The required accounting coursework can be acquired in continuing-education
classes or master’s study.
•
6. MEDICAL SCIENTIST
Job Growth: 40
percent, or 44,000 new jobs by 2018
Salary: $84,760 mean; most jobs are in
Massachusetts, California and Pennsylvania, which have supportive academic and
research institutions.
The Field: Medical scientists study human disease and
conditions, working in biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, hospitals,
university research centers or for the federal government.
Why It’s Growing:
Overpopulation and increased international travel have quickened the spread of
known diseases and given rise to new ones — think SARS, AIDS and avian flu —
requiring new medicines and cures. The field’s big trend is the so-called bench
to bedside movement or, more formally, translational science — the search for
practical applications for research that can move quickly to the marketplace.
Training: The heavy lifting is done by Ph.D.’s, or those with a joint Ph.D.
and M.D., who design clinical trials and work closely with patients to monitor
the application of their research. A general master’s, perhaps in biology, can
lead to work in a research lab; others specialize with a master’s in bio-imaging
or clinical investigation. Undergraduate underpinnings: biological science,
complemented by math, physics and computer science.
•
7. PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT Job Growth: 39 percent, or
29,000 new jobs by 2018
Salary: $85,000 mean; Connecticut, Nevada and
Washington are top-paying states at $96,000-plus.
The Field: Not quite a
doctor, but not a nurse, P.A.’s are critical members of medical teams who
diagnose conditions, and examine and treat patients with routine problems. Many
choose the profession for lifestyle reasons: they want the medical and patient
connection without the years of school and grueling demands placed on
physicians.
Why It’s Growing: High health care costs and a shortage of
doctors make P.A.’s cost effective. They free up physicians and can spend more
time with patients. In some rural and inner-city areas they are the only
provider. They are “absolutely one of the solutions to access to health care in
this country,” says Justine Strand de Oliveira, who heads Duke University’s P.A.
program, the oldest in the country.
Training: Rigorous. While any
undergraduate degree is acceptable, prospective students will need prerequisites
in biology, chemistry and statistics, and programs like to see a commitment to
patient care as admissions criteria. Graduates get a master’s in health
sciences, then sit for boards that license them as P.A.’s. Many come from work
as military medics, emergency medical technicians or community volunteers.
Average age of students: 27. Entry into the two-year programs can be
competitive. At Duke, more than 1,000 applied last year for 75 spots.
•
8. SKIN CARE SPECIALIST Job
Growth: 38 percent, or 15,000 new jobs by 2018
Salary: $13 median hourly
wage; $60,000 or more in affluent areas, especially selling products
The
Field: Skin care specialists treat the face and body, but mainly the face, and
mainly the faces of women. Ninety-eight percent of practitioners are women
(average age: 41), administering chemicals, Botox, lasers, microdermabrasion and
skin peels in day spas and doctor’s offices.
Why It’s Growing: Boomers have
dug in their heels on aging. Look at sales of anti-aging skin products, which
rose 13 percent from 2006 to 2008, to $1.6 billion, and are expected to jump an
additional 20 percent by 2013. Improvements in products and the technology for
their application also account for growth, along with a diversifying client base
— a third of spa-goers are now men, and younger people are beginning to “buy
into” skin care regimens, says Katie Armitage, president of Associated Skin Care
Professionals, a trade group.
Training: All states but Connecticut require
licensing. Training is at least 600 hours of clinical and classroom education
covering anatomy, physiology and procedures. Cosmetology schools offer
certificate programs (make sure they lead to a license), as do continuing
education departments at community colleges like Houston Community College and
Nassau Community College. Some community colleges offer associate’s degrees in
science or cosmetology that include skin care training and added coursework in
business and health.
•
9. BIOCHEMIST AND BIOPHYSICIST
Job Growth: 37
percent, or 9,000 new jobs by 2018
Salary: $88,550 mean; New Jersey,
Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., pay the best.
The Field: Closely related
to medical scientists, biochemists and biophysicists study living organisms at
the molecular level — one focusing on their chemical composition, especially DNA
and how it can be manipulated to treat disease and genetic disorders; the other
using math and physics to understand how mechanical and electrical energy affect
an organism. The three fields are so interrelated that labels are becoming
artificial, says Beverly Wendland, chairwoman of the biology department at Johns
Hopkins. At Hopkins, a cooperative graduate program — Cell, Molecular and
Developmental Biology and Biophysics — is typical of the wave of
interdisciplinary study in the field.
Why It’s Growing: See No. 6.
Training: See No. 6.
•
10. ATHLETIC TRAINER
Job Growth: 37
percent, or 6,000 new jobs by 2018
Salary: $41,340 mean
The Field: Not
to be confused with personal trainers, athletic trainers work under a doctor’s
supervision and are schooled in sports medicine to prevent and treat
muscular/skeletal injuries. These are the folks on the sidelines treating
injured athletes. But they also work behind the scenes, designing training and
strengthening exercises that prevent injury. “We look at movement patterns or
activities that create overuse or injury in many professions, and get workers
back to their jobs quickly and safely,” says Marjorie J. Albohm, president of
the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.
Why It’s Growing:With the
rising cost of health care, trainers are becoming an integral player in industry
(Boeing and Disney use them), government (the military, F.B.I., Homeland
Security and Department of Defense) and the performing arts (Cirque du Soleil
and the Rockettes, in their traveling troupes).
Training: To practice, 47
states require licensing, and a bachelor’s in athletic training is the minimum
requirement. But some 70 percent of practitioners hold a master’s in athletic
training. Many come to the field through “entry level” master’s — five-year
B.S./M.A. programs. For admission to a two-year master’s program, prerequisite
coursework includes biology, chemistry, physics and anatomy, along with
electives like nutrition, biochemistry or exercise physiology that suggest
knowledge and interest in the field. Certificates are mainly for an established
athletic trainer to specialize.

Health Care scholarships or tuition assistance (some links may not work)

For those who are willing to commit to working in rural or inner city
health care, several programs offer tuition, tuition with living expenses or
loan repayment. The Rural Recruitment and Retention Net-work, and the National
Rural Health Association (see both in chapter 3) and the Rural Information
Center (800-633-7701) can be contacted for specific information and guidance.
Visit www.nal.usda.gov/ric/
to find out more about these programs. Contact your state department of health,
the Rural Assistance Center www.raconline.org or the
National Health Service Corps www.bphc.hrsa.gov/. The
NHSC also has information on loan-repayment programs for health care workers in
inner-city areas.

The United States Armed Services offers abundant educational opportunities.
If you enlist for several years they will train you for many health care or
computer-related careers. Their Tuition Assistance Program currently pays up to
$4,500 per year for full-time active duty members. Eligible College Fund Program
enlistees receive up to $65,000 toward college tuition, when combined with the
Montgomery G.I. Bill, and upon honorable discharge. Registered nurses who
enlist, in addition to loan repayment or sign-up bonuses, may work towards a
degree as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant. Students who have their
pre-med degree can arrange to have their medical or dental school paid for. Call
your local recruiter to get details on education programs or visit the U.S.
Army’s web site at www.todaysmilitary.com/.

There
are many programs available for those who take the time to seek them out.
Contact local hospitals that are short staffed and other medical providers to
ask about tuition assistance programs. Directories with hospital contact
information are described in Chapter 3. Many employers offer tuition assistance
to current employees who show initiative and maintain good grades. It is amazing
just how many programs are available especially when demand for workers is high
and com-petition is fierce between recruiters and medical facilities in
general.

The federal government started offering student loan payoff incentives for
new hires in 2004 and since then have paid out over 100 million to employees to
pay off their loans. They will pay up to $10,000 a year for six years for a
total of up to $60,000, quite a benefit to say the least. Visit http://federaljobs.net to
explore federal job options. Uncle Sam employs over 100,000 medical workers at
VA facilities nationwide and at other agencies such as Health and Human
Services, etc. The all new 10th edition of The Book of U.S. Government
Jobs explains where the jobs are, what's available, and how to get one.
A section is devoted to recruitment incentives including the student loan payoff
program, cash incentives, and relocation reimbursement.

How much is medical school in the philippines?

by the time you get to medical school it would probaby cost something
like 180,000 pesos ($5000) per year and you'd be matriculating for 4 years. but
before you get into medicine proper, you have to complete a 4-year
bachelor's in science degree (examples: med tech, BS biology) and that
costs money too but not as much as med school. Cebu schools are still cheaper than the ones in Luzon, including Virgin
Milagrosa, and the lower cost of living also can be added in.
and you need more info about here from other foreign student

Proponents believe that the three-year programs will help address several pressing issues. By producing doctors faster, three-year M.D. degree programs help to address the critical doctor deficits projected over the next 15 years. And with almost two-thirds of medical students graduating with $150,000 or more of educational debt and more students entering medical school at an older age, the three-year option allows students to begin practicing sooner and with as much as 25 percent less debt.

Three Year Medical Degrees
Several medical schools are piloting primary care programs that
allow medical students to obtain their degree in just three years.
The programs were initiated in an effort to attract more students
to family medicine and help to avoid a major primary care
physician (PCP) shortage, American Medical News reports.
http://spacecoastdaily.com/2012/05/proposals-address-the-impending-primary-care-shortage/

Here's how it would work for students who want to enter family medicine
in three years:
• First year: Curriculum would be the same.

• Summer
after first year: Students would no longer get time off and instead would take a
single course in family medicine that is normally part of the second year
curriculum.
• Second year: Students take the normal curriculum, but add in
(throughout the year) a clinical experience in family medicine (normally part of
the third year).

• Third year: Students take regular rotations in fields such
as internal medicine, pediatrics and psychiatry. In the eight-week rotation that
would otherwise be used for family medicine, the students would take rotations
in the parts of the fourth year deemed necessary: intensive care, neurology and
geriatrics.
Over all, students will spend slightly less time in the
curriculum than do students over four years. Berk said that when he talks with
medical educators elsewhere, "everyone has been thinking about the fourth year."
He said that the fourth year can be enormously important for some students in
planning their careers or having unique experiences in medicine. He spent some
of his fourth year while at Boston University's medical school on a Native
American reservation. But Berk said that "it depends on the student" and that he
believes that some "probably don't need the fourth year."
Medical Professionals Still Among Highest Paid In America

When it comes to earning power, having a
medical degree still pays off.
The highest earning jobs in 2009 were mostly
in the health care field, ranging from surgeons to pediatricians, according to
the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which released its annual wages report Friday.

At $219,770, surgeons earned the most on average last year.

Specialists, in particular, earned the most. Surgeons took the lead
spot, making an average of $219,770 last year, the highest average salary in the
country, according to the government data.

Following them were
anesthesiologists, who made an average of $211,750 last year; oral and
maxillofacial surgeons at $210,710; and orthodontists at $206,190.

Obstetricians and gynecologists rounded up the top five, both raking in
an average of $204,470 in 2009.

Pay Cuts Ahead?
Specialists, however, could see a pay drop in the
next couple of years as the health care reform bill, signed into law this year,
begins to kick in.

“The bill shifts the money from specialty to primary care,” says Paul
Keckley, the executive director of the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions.
“The bill says that primary care has been underpaid, and money is being shifted
towards them.”

The changes may encourage more medical school students to go into primary
care instead of the more lucrative specialist fields, Keckley says.

While primary doctors will most likely see their pay rise, specialists
and doctors with their own practices are likely to see about a 2-percent decline
in their salary, Keckley says.

“It doesn’t sound big, but if the costs increase like business costs at
3 percent or 5 percent a year, and Medicare pays them less, the doctor has to
make that up with commercially insured patients or raise co-pays or find other
sources of income, like wellness or nutrients, depending on their specialty,”
said Keckley.

Other High-Paying Fields
Outside of health care, the only job that
cracked the top ten was chief executive, with an average salary of $167,280 last
year.

Further down the list: Lawyers, $129,020, petroleum engineer, $119,960;
and engineering managers, $122,810.
Those with their eyes on the sky also
made big bucks last year. Airline pilots, including copilots and flight
engineers, earned $117,060, while air traffic controllers pulled in $106,990.
Astronomers just made it into the six-figure range with $102,740.

In case you are wondering, the lowest-paying jobs were all in the food
service industry.

Food preparation workers and servers earned the least in 2009, at just
$18,120. Outpacing them were fast-food cooks, who earned $18,230, and
dishwashers at $18,330. All were way below the national average of
$43,460.

Highest Paid Jobs in USA

to third and fourth year students may be increased to repay outstanding balances
on other loans taken out while in attendance at that school.

Frequently Asked
Questions
What is the Primary Care
Loan Program?
The
Primary Care Loan (PCL) program is a low cost federal loan program for medical
students committed to primary health care practice. The interest rate is 5
percent and begins to accrue following a one year grace period after you cease
to be a full-time student. When compared to other federal student loans and
private loans, the PCL provides significant savings. The loan also offers
deferment of principal and interest not found in other loan programs.

How much can I
borrow?
Your financial aid office will determine how much you can borrow
based on your eligibility, the amount of PCL funds available at your institution
and other criteria. The maximum award for first- and second- year students is
cost of attendance (including tuition, educational expenses, and reasonable
living expenses). Amounts beyond this may be awarded to third- and fourth-year
students.

How Do I Qualify for a PCL?

Be enrolled as a
full-time student in a degree program leading to a doctor of medicine or
  doctor of osteopathy

Be a United States
  citizen or eligible non-citizen

Provide financial
  information about your parents

Demonstrate financial
  need

Owe no federal grant
refund and be in default on no federal loan

Maintain good academic
  standing

Register with Selective
  Service if required by law

Why must I provide financial
information about my parents to obtain a PCL?
To assist schools in allocating
limited PCL funds, Health and Human Services requires parental financial
information from all students to determine financial need without regard to age,
tax, marital or independent status.
Is there a service
requirement for PCL?
YES. You must enter a residency training program in
family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, combined medicine/pediatrics,
preventive medicine, or osteopathic general practice.

You must complete your
residency program within four years of graduation.
You must practice in
primary health care until the loan is paid in full.
What are some examples of
primary health care and non-primary care residency and practice activities for
the PCL Program?
PRIMARY HEALTH CARE
ACCEPTABLE
Clinical Preventive
Medicine
Occupational Medicine
Public Health
Public Policy
Fellowship
Senior Residencies in one of the above
Faculty administrators /
policy makers certified
in one of the primary health care
disciplines
Geriatrics
Adolescent Medicine
Adolescent
Pediatrics
Sports Medicine

NON-PRIMARY HEALTH CARE
NON-ACCEPTABLE
Cardiology
Gastroenterology
Obstetrics/Gynecology
Surgery
Dermatology
Radiology
Rehabilitation
Medicine
Psychiatry
Emergency Medicine
Are there exceptions to the
primary health care service obligation?
YES, however, your loan repayment
obligation remains.
Your primary health care service obligation may be
waived if you terminate studies before graduating and do not later resume
studies.

Your primary health care service obligation may be suspended for
the period you are not enrolled because you have terminated studies before
graduating; your obligation is resumed when you return to medical school to
complete your studies.
What if I do not fulfill the
primary care service obligation?
At the point you fail to fulfill your
service obligation, the outstanding loan balance will be computed annually at an
interest rate of 18 percent from the date of noncompliance.
What if I accept PCL and
change my mind about primary health care?
If you are not firmly committed to
the practice of primary health care, you should not accept a PCL.
What if I want additional
certification?

You may obtain additional certification in primary health care
while fulfilling your service obligation, as long as you complete your primary
health care residency program within four years after graduation. For example,
if your primary care residency is completed in three years after graduation, you
may obtain certification in an area of training to enhance your primary health
care practice (i.e., geriatrics) at anytime, and it will be considered an
acceptable activity for fulfillment of your service obligation.

When does repayment begin
and end?
Repayment begins following a twelve-month grace period after you
cease to be a full-time student.
Interest at 5 percent is computed on the
unpaid principal balance and begins to accrue upon expiration of your grace
period unless you are eligible to defer payment.
Loans are repayable over a
period of not less than ten years nor more than twenty five years, at the
discretion of the institution.

May payment of my PCL be
deferred?
YES. Up to four years in an eligible primary health care residency
program.
Up to three years as a volunteer under the Peace Corps Act
practicing in an eligible primary health care activity.
Up to three years as
a member of a uniformed service. To be eligible for deferment, you must be on
sustained full-time active duty practicing in an eligible primary health care
activity in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Corps or the U.S. Public Health Service
Commissioned Corps.

For periods of advanced
professional training in primary health care.
Is a PCL eligible for
consolidation?
PCL is not eligible for consolidation because of the service
obligation.
What happens to my PCL in
the event of death or disability?
Your obligation to repay the loan will be
canceled upon receipt of the required documentation in the event of your death
or permanent and total disability.
How should I explore whether
PCL is right for me?
Talk to primary health care faculty.
Talk to your
financial aid office about eligibility and terms and conditions.
Attend
primary health care society meetings.
Everyone knows that medical school is expensive - but exactly how much is it?

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the median tuition in 2012-2013 was $28,719 for resident students at public institutions, $49,000 for nonresident students at public institutions, and $47,673 for students at private institutions. With fees and insurance the cost of attendance is $32,197 and $54,625 for resident and nonresident students at public institutions and $50,078 at private institutions.

The median education debt for indebted medical school graduates in 2012 was $170,000, and 86 percent of graduates report having education debt. Specifically the 2012 the median debt at graduation was $160,000 at public institutions and $190,000 at private institutions.
Medical schools in U.S and Canada are very expensive; over $40, 000 for
tuition, plus the cost you have to pay for books and other living fees.
And as you may know, the admission for these schools is very hard
(requires high G.P.A in college transcript, high test score in MCAT, and
limitation of admission for international students). Peter Unger.

In a previous post I discussed the true
cost of medical school. I am not going to cover the same ground here,
although I encourage prospective medical students to consider the opportunity
cost of medical school before they commit to medical training. Once you have
made the commitment, I recommend beginning the financial aid process as soon as
you have accepted admittance to a school. The financial aid landscape is always
changing, so I won't get too specific here. However, there are a number of
scholarship opportunities for potential rural doctors who are fairly certain
they plan to practice rural medicine:

Primary Care Loans: These
  are low-interest loans given to
applicants who are committed to practicing primary care in any demographic
setting, and so are not limited to doctors in rural practice. They require the
applicant to work in a primary care setting (i.e. not hospitalist) until the
loans are repaid in full. Early termination of primary care service carries a
heavy penalty in the form of an 18% interest rate.

http://onestop.umn.edu/finances/financial_aid/loans/university_administered/pcl/index.html

(read more at end of article)

National Health Service Corps
Scholarship Program: This is the same organization that funds a
loan-repayment program for primary-care physicians. The scholarship
program is more generous, providing "full tuition and fees, twelve monthly
stipend payments, and other reasonable educational expenses" during medical
school. The repayment period begins after completing residency and requires
one year of service in a Health Professionals Shortage Area (HPSA) for every
year of scholarship support, with a minimum service period of two years. The
advantage of the scholarship program over the loan repayment program is
immediate payment of tuition and fees, so the applicant does not accrue
compounded interest on their loans during residency. The total amount awarded
tends to be greater, because the one-to-one scholarship repayment period
applies even if the program paid for higher private medical school tuition.
Again, failure to enter an eligible HPSA position after residency carries
  heavy repayment penalties.

Read more about the program here http://www.raconline.org/funding/funding_details.php?funding_id=311

State-specific scholarship
programs: If you plan to work in the same state as your medical school,
there may be smaller scholarship programs available to you in exchange for a
period of service to the state after you complete residency. Consult your
financial aid office for details on these types of programs.

http://www.simmons.edu/shs/admission/finaid/scholarships.shtml

http://www.ahec.buffalo.edu/careers.htm

http://services.aamc.org/fed_loan_pub/index.cfm?fuseaction=public.program&program_id=104

Nursing Education Loan Repayment
  Program

I usually recommend loan repayment rather than scholarship programs for most
applicants. The language of the scholarship program is fairly restrictive and
you will be in a major bind if you decide against practicing in an HPSA area.
However, if you choose to attend a high-tuition private medical school, an NHSC
scholarship provides immediate funding and the best year-for-year repayment
ratio.
