5 essential things you should know about nutrition and cancer

Surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy are the standard types of treatment for cancer. While your cancer specialist is focusing on staging your disease, the type of surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy, many people tend to lose focus on their nutrition.

Allow me to remind you some of the basics so that you could appreciate the importance of nutrition.

"Nutrition is the provision, to cells and organisms, of the materials 'necessary' (in the form of food) to support life."

Therefore, nutrition is not an option or a desire but rather a basic necessity, That makes it all the more important reason to make nutrition as part of your overall strategy to fight the cancer battle. Do not give up. Many people with cancer have been cured or survived longer than those without cancer.

The following are the 5 essential things you should know about nutrition and cancer (adapted and summarized from www.cancer.org).

#1. Proteins

We need protein for growth, to repair body tissue, and to keep our immune systems healthy. When your body doesn’t get enough protein, it might break down muscle for the fuel it needs. This makes it take longer to recover from illness and can lower resistance to infection. People with cancer often need more protein than usual. After surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy, extra protein is usually needed to heal tissues and help fight infection.

Good sources of protein include fish, poultry, lean red meat, eggs, low-fat dairy products, nuts and nut butters, dried beans, peas and lentils, and soy foods.

#2. Fats

Fats play an important role in nutrition. Fats and oils are made of fatty acids and serve as a rich source of energy for the body. The body breaks down fats and uses them to store energy, insulate body tissues, and transport some types of vitamins through the blood.

You may have heard that some fats are better for you than others. Choose monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats more often than saturated fats or trans fats.

Monounsaturated fats are found mainly in vegetable oils like olive, canola, and peanut oils. Polyunsaturated fats are found mainly in vegetable oils like safflower, sunflower, corn, and flaxseed. They are also the main fats found in seafood.

Saturated fats are mainly found in animal sources like meat and poultry, whole or reduced-fat milk, cheese, and butter. Some vegetable oils like coconut, palm kernel oil, and palm oil are saturated. Trans-fatty acids are formed when vegetable oils are processed into margarine or shortening. Sources of trans fats include snack foods and baked goods made with partially hydrogenated vegetable oil or vegetable shortening. Trans fats also are found naturally in some animal products, like dairy products. Trans fats can raise bad cholesterol and lower good cholesterol; try to eliminate them from your diet.

#3. Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the body’s major source of energy. Carbohydrates give the body the fuel it needs for physical activity and proper organ function. The best sources of carbohydrates – fruits, vegetables, and whole grains – also supply needed vitamins and minerals, fiber, and phytonutrients to the body’s cells.

Whole grains or foods made from them contain all the essential parts and naturally occurring nutrients of the entire grain seed. Whole grains are found in cereals, breads, flours, and crackers. Some whole grains, such as quinoa, brown rice, or barley, can be used as side dishes or part of an entree.

Fiber is the part of plant foods that the body cannot digest. There are 2 types of fiber. Insoluble fiber helps to move food waste out of the body quickly, and soluble fiber binds with water in the stool to help keep stool soft.

Other sources of carbohydrates include bread, potatoes, rice, spaghetti, pasta, cereals, corn, peas, and beans. Sweets (desserts, candy, and drinks with sugar) can supply carbohydrates, but provide very little in the way of vitamins, minerals, or phytonutrients.

#4. Water

Water and liquids or fluids are vital to health. All body cells need water to function. If you do not take in enough fluids or if you lose fluids through vomiting or diarrhea, you can become dehydrated (your body doesn’t have as much fluid as it should). If this happens, the fluids and minerals that help keep your body working can become dangerously out of balance. You do get some water from the foods you eat, but a person should drink about eight 8-ounce glasses of liquid each day to be sure that all the body cells get the fluid they need. You may need extra fluids if you are vomiting or have diarrhea. Keep in mind that all liquids (soups, milk, even ice cream and gelatin) count toward your fluid goals.

#5. Vitamins and minerals

When it comes to vitamins and minerals it is confusing due to the many choices, claims and promises created by the healthcare supplement industry. While alluring claims and network marketing sell products, the products are not always suitable for cancer patients.

The body needs small amounts of vitamins and minerals to help it function properly. Most are found naturally in foods. Vitamins and minerals help the body use the energy (calories) found in foods.

A person who eats a balanced diet with enough calories and protein usually gets plenty of vitamins and minerals. But it can be hard to eat a balanced diet when you are being treated for cancer, especially if you have treatment side effects that last for a long time. In this case, your doctor or dietitian may suggest a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement.

If you are thinking of taking a vitamin or supplement, be sure to discuss this with your doctor first. Some people with cancer take large amounts of vitamins, minerals, and other dietary supplements to try to boost their immune system or even destroy cancer cells. Vitamins and minerals alone are not sufficient to fight cancer. Remember, nutrition is not about vitamins and minerals but there are other important elements (e.g. protein, water etc.) as well.

Some of these substances can be harmful, especially when taken in large doses. In fact, large doses of some vitamins and minerals may make chemotherapy and radiation therapy less effective.

If your oncologist says it is OK for you to take a vitamin during treatment, it may be best to choose a supplement with no more than 100% of the Recommended Daily Value (RDV) of vitamins and minerals.

If you want to take in more antioxidants, health experts recommend eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, which are good sources of antioxidants. Taking large doses of antioxidant supplements or vitamin-enhanced foods or liquids is usually not recommended while getting chemo or radiation therapy. Talk with your doctor to find out the best time to take antioxidant supplements.

Safety considerations for nutrition and cancer

Many people believe that if they find a pill or supplement in stores, it is safe and it works. Remember, a 'natural' product does not mean its a 'safe product. Some poisons are also natural but they are certainly not safe.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) put out rules in 2007 to help ensure that supplements contain what their labels claim they do, but the supplement’s safety and its effects on the body are not addressed by any FDA rules. The FDA does not make manufacturers of these products print possible side effects on their labels. And the FDA cannot pull a dietary supplement or herbal product from the market unless it can prove that the product is unsafe. Stop taking the product and call your doctor right away if you have side effects, like wheezing, itching, numbness, or tingling in your limbs.

Tell your health care team about any over-the-counter products or supplements you are using or are thinking about using. Take the bottle(s) to your doctor to talk about the dose, and be sure that the ingredients do not interfere with your health or cancer treatments.

(Amazon): Back when babies were just daydreams, I received "What to Expect When You're Expecting" (3rd ed.) from a pregnant friend who had an extra copy. Not knowing any better, I was quite pleased. Once I became pregnant and actually needed a guide, however, that changed. I found the book to be poorly organized, overly conversational and condescending in tone (especially given my plans to be a stay-at-home mom), and generally useless for anything other than instilling fear and paranoia. Most exasperating, though, was the "organization." Symptoms that can arise during varying parts of pregnancy are scattered haphazardly amongst the monthly chapters. This means that the book must be read cover to cover and all material retained in memory if hunting through the index and flipping back and forth between sections doesn't sound appealing.

Enter the "Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy." Hallelujah! Not wanting to suffer through another mediocre guide to pregnancy, I looked through every book I could get my hands on, and this was the only one that satisfied my criteria. It is written by trustworthy professionals in clear yet -professional- language, it provides information on "pregnancy, childbirth and your newborn" in chronological order, and best of all, it contains separate sections entitled, appropriately, "decision guides for pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood," "pregnancy reference guide," and "complications of pregnancy and childbirth," each with a table of contents at the beginning of the section. Instead of having to take a wild guess at which chapter (or, more likely, chapters) cramping might have landed in in "What to Expect" or searching the entire index, I could find it, along with all the other things I might be wondering about, in the reference guide. Blessed simplicity!

The "Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy" was the only book I needed. Once I found it, "What to Expect When You're Expecting" went back on the shelf and stayed there.

390 dengue cases and 2 dengue deaths in a week

PUTRAJAYA: A public servant in Sabah and a farmer in Sarawak were the two dengue fatalities reported during the week between Oct 21 and 27, said Health Director-General Datuk Seri Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman yesterday.

He said the government employee, in his 30s, had earlier sought treatment at a private clinic and was admitted to a government hospital the following day when his condition worsened, but succumbed to the disease the same day. The public servant died due to severe dengue with multi-organ failure, he said in a statement issued here yesterday.

As for the farmer, a woman, Dr Hasan said, she died two days after being admitted to a government hospital due to haemorrhagic dengue.

He said the two deaths occurred in a non-epidemic areas, but checks conducted by the health authorities found the aedes breeding rate in the affected areas to be high, at 2.3 per cent.

Dr Hasan said a total of 390 dengue fever cases were reported during the period. He said Kelantan, Sabah, Perak and Sarawak continued to show an increase in dengue cases since the past two months.

In Sarawak, eight localities in six districts in the state were identified as epidemic areas, with Rumah Patsy Salah in Meradong, Sarikei, identified as a hotspot locality, where 10 dengue cases were reported, he added.

SARIKEI: The outbreak of dengue in the state is under control though the disease claimed one life. Public Health Assistant Minister Dr Jerip Susil revealed the sad news to reporters during a press conference after officiating at the launch of the state-level Asean Dengue Day and Divisional-level Jelajah Sihat Bersama Komuniti at the civic centre here yesterday.

According to Jerip, a 55-year old dengue victim from a longhouse in Song died in Sibu General Hospital last Friday.

He attributed the man’s death to delay in seeking treatment. When admitted to Song Hospital last Tuesday, he was beyond saving with internal bleeding.

Dr Jerip said fatality could have been avoided if the man had sought treatment as soon as the symptoms showed up.

He revealed that a total of 959 dengue cases were reported in the state from January to Oct 13 this year from 776 cases during the corresponding period last year – an increase of 183 cases or 23.6 percent. Districts with drastic rise in number of dengue cases were Bau, Sri Aman, Lubok Antu, Julau, Pakan, Meradong, Bintulu, Belaga, Kapit and Kuching.

In view of the deadly consequence of dengue, Jerip called on the people to play their part to stop its spread. Fogging should be complemented by getting rid of the breeding ground for aedes mosquito in houses and compounds to be more effective.

Dr Jerip believed dengue and other non-contagious diseases could be put at bay if people put into practice prevention measures recommended through various awareness and educational programmes.

Among those present were State Health director Datu Dr Zulkifli Jantan, Engkili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong, state vector research officer Asmad Mat Yusof, Divisional Health Officer Dr Hasrina Hassan and director of Sarikei Hospital, Dr Tey Siew Chang.

Feb 2011 - Hi, I'm 35 weeks pregnant, and just completed my antenatal class last month in Gleneagles Ampang. It cost RM180 for 3 session, which are held for 3 consecutive saturday, so hubby could attend (and should, because all the moms are with their hubby. The topics is very useful IMO, it covers diet in pregnancy, exercise, labour process, breastfeeding, and taking care of newborn . And there's a tour to delivery ward, showing us the labour room and also post labour suites. Since i'm planning to labour there, so i find this very helpful...

Dec 2009 - A fellow expat recommended that I see this Doctor who works at Gleneagles Intan in Ampang. He is Indian Malaysian and very professional. At first I was hesitant with a guy doctor, but he sounded very experienced and there were always many, many expats at the waiting room coming to see him. It's always best to choose a doctor which is recommended by someone you know so that you are assured of his practice...Gleneagles Intan is where I delivered my baby. All I can say is that their service and facilities are great. The prices will be higher than the other typical hospitals but it's because you are getting what you pay for. The staff are all nice and friendly and willing to help. Believe me, if you are the one lying there on the bed with a c-section & slowly recovering... you will appreciate all the kindness and friendliness around…”

Gleneagles Medical Center has very high standards, with English-speaking doctors, most of whom have received their education in the US or UK. There are others, as well, around the region. There are also many Kliniks and Polikliniks around - doctor's offices - where you can see a physician very inexpensively (around US$5) for prescriptions and minor medical problems. March 2009 - I gave birth at Gleneagles Hospital in KL. It is a modern facility, and my experience was quite good. My OB was a female doctor who trained in UK, I approached her with my desire to do a non-medicated birth and she was open to that, as long as I was aware that things don't always go exactly as planned. Lucky for me, they did, and my son was born after 14 hours of labor, 6 hours at the hospital. I told the midwife when I arrived that I did not want an epidural, and after a moment of disbelief, she left me and my husband alone until I felt 'like pushing' at which point we were to notify her. I was only attached to a fetal monitor at the beginning when I checked in, and then during the active delivery stage. My doctor was open to any birthing position I chose, and she and the midwife were very supportive during the delivery. I delivered in the afternoon, and stayed two nights, baby sleeping in my room. Overall it was a great experience.”

Jan 2011 - I am also a patient of Dr Ranjit Singh since last 20th December 2010. He gave me an antibiotic, and a jel to apply. About 5 days ago, I went to appoint him, he said I need to continue to take the antibiotic for 6-8 months in order to kill the acne bacteria. Then, he also gave roaccutane, however the amount is only 10 mg, and I'm only allowed to take 1 pill at a day. However, my acne actually worse than before I take roaccutane, and my lips are dried. Have anyone experince this?

Sep 2010 - I have posted recently that my skin on the face is developing some rashes and it's really getting dry and flaky. I looked at Subang Jaya forum and most of them recommended Dr. Ranjit at SS 15. My husband told me he went to see the same doctor many years ago for skin rashes and the medicine he prescribed was really effective. And so off we went the other day. He's quite a cool doctor and he's very sharp. He prescribed a couple of creams to heal the rashes and some tablets for allergies. The only setback was that there were many people lining up to see him. I guess it took an hour just to attend to me. But I guess it just goes to show that he's indeed a good skin specialist as there were many people lining up and trusting on him for their skin problems.

May 2008 - I took my teenage daughter to Dr Ranjit for her acne problems. She was prescribed with antibiotics. She took them for several (6-7) months but saw very little changes, if not none at all. I stopped taking her there after reading an article about the side effects of taking antibiotics over prolonged period.

May 2008 - i used to bring my kid there for severe eczema on her sole. costs me rm50 for a little container of unidentified white creamy medication. no itemised billing but i guess the repacked contents of that little plactic roundie is not worth rm20. your guess what the balance is for. btw, as with the cacophony of cheap and bank-balance-blowing stuff dished out by sworn and acclaimed dermatologists, dr ranjit's prescription did no good for my (then) little one. most interestingly, the diagnosis ranged from eczema (which i beleive is right)to psoriasis to bacterial infection to "normal thing". thats the sad truth for dermatology - the line's too thin for the various ailments. a lot of shooting in the dark where prescription is concerned (admitted one "skin specialist") although they all agreed that the patient needs moisturer. In the end, i tried the remedy of a kampung old wife tale - one of those johnson baby lotion. it worked like magic!

Dec 2011 - I just want to share my experience visiting a gynae in Tmn Desa Medical Centre today. Actually this is the 2nd time I visited this hospital. First time I was at 8 weeks and I visited Dr. Ng Choon Keat as he is the only gynae available at that time. He charge me RM 75 for consultation + ultrasound. Today I am at 15 weeks and I thought I will try another gynae just to compare so I visited Dr. Ong Hean Choon. I understand Dr. Ong Hean Choon is more older and experienced and he also consults at Pantai Bangsar but he had no patients in TDMC anyway. We were the only ones there and he charged me RM 100 for consultation + RM 120 for ultrasound!! I was shocked to see the bill as it was such a vast difference from the last visit. I even asked him how come so expensive for ultrasound cuz I thought ultrasound is standard price charged by the hospital. But he said its not and depends on the experience of the doctor. Some more his ultrasound was a really really old machine compared to Dr. Ng Choon Keat. At least Dr. Ng's ultrasound had a monitor for the mother to see the baby but Dr. Ong's only had one monitor so he showed my husband 1st then only can show me. I won't got to Dr. Ong again eventhough he explained more things to us compared to Dr. Ng because I think he is definately overcharging! I checked with my other friends, even hospitals like Prince Court and SDMC is cheaper than what I paid today!

Nov 2011 - I'd been a patient with Dr Tang SDMC. Delivered my baby boy under natural method. Am pleased with her but be prepared for the long queue. Well, to avoid disappointment during visits, jot down your questions in a paper and ask her all you want... her visit is normally short and nice. Dun think she is pro in c-sect but her experience in c-sect sure comes in handy should there be any complications in the labour process. Just make sure you clarify with her that you opt for natural delivery... Well, if any doctor trying to coax you to go for c-sect, ask for all the reason behind it...

Nov 2011 - I met Dr Tang and I am kinda like her, so I did not to go to see other doctors already.
My next appointment will be next week and I can't wait to see her again.
Although it's my 1st visit early this month but I am able to see my baby's heart beat at 7W5D. It was amazing! I didn't spent a lot of time with her, but there are the special feeling that she's good gynae.

It's ok, I can't PM you too. The cost is inclusive of the baby charges. Delivery is around 3-4K, and the baby charges would be around 1.5K if my memory serves me right. So all in all just under 5k. I stayed 2D/1N and I had epi. But epi charges are not that much (less than 1k), and you must also factor in variable charges like nursing fees, consumables fees etc etc. 5k is just an estimation. May 2012 - This doctor is very lan si. I brought my mum to visit him around 2 weeks ago to do check up, after everything he said my mum should take antibiotic and blah blah blah, then i asked him if there is anything that can substitute the antibiotic, you all know what he replied? He said, you go invent la, if success then we all change, then i'll be billionaire, I was so f***ing angry. We are not doctor, sure will ask some stupid question, and I don't think that is a stupid question as well. As a professional, but I've no idea why he talked like gangster. His impression for me from 100% dropped to 10%, even though he is an expert in ENT.

Apr 2012 - Or you could also try Klinik ENT Dr S.Subra. It's at the opposite of IOI Mall. There are other specialists clinics there as well. Not sure about pricing though. Couldn't find anything online. Apr 2012 - I just visited Dr Chang this afternoon in Pantai Bangsar. Made a phone call to check and made sure he was in before I went over.
He is a good listener and very good patience. Total bill was RM180 for consultation + meds.

Mar 2010 - On the contrary I have had nose and sinus surgery performed by Dr. Yeo Sek Wee in June 2009 and I am glad to say he has performed an amazing job. My nose now breathes very well and I have no more sinus headaches! He is very patient and has good bedside manners. I truly recommend him adn his charges are reasonable.

May 2011 - Think very carefully about this decision. Believe me, all first time mothers are scared about the birth, but there are pain relieving options available. Having a C-section can also be a traumatic experience and you will take longer to recover afterwards. Also it is a far bigger shock to your baby to be suddenly wrenched from the womb into an operating theatre environment, rather than pushing through the vagina and arriving in the world as nature intended - especially if your birthing room has the option of dimmed lighting...

May 2011 - When our daughter was diagnosed with an orthopedic condition at birth we were in a fortunate position to choose her treatment at any hospital worldwide - we visited Children's Boston/Philly, The Necker Children's Hospital in France, a private clinic in Switzerland and NUH. Rather than focus on the hospital we chose to concentrate on the doctor that would be her care provider and surgeon 'for life' - her condition needs to be monitored until she reached skeletal maturity. We ultimately chose NUH - her pediatric orthopedic surgeon is world-renowned, trained under the inventor of her surgery in the 1970's and was mentored by him until his recent death, and is considered one of the top 50 pediatric orthos in the world.
