Bogor, 23 February 2009. Agroforest farmers at the base of Mount Pangrango have managed to export kidney tea (Orthosiphon spp.) leaves product to France. This is a local initiative that has potential to become a solution to global environment and economy crisis.

In a modest ceremony marking the first export of the herb, the farmers with several members of Telapak witnessed a 20 feet container loaded with the herb leaving for the port. The farmers who live in two villages around Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park have been cultivating kidney tea organically since the last two years. The herb, which has been cultivated under the canopy of Bogor rain forests, can thrive under the canopy and it will not either harm the trees or have negative impact on forest ecological function.

Telapak, through its business unit PT. PNU, has been assisting and building the capacity of forest peoples in around West Java in order to achieve an environmentally sound community-based economy initiative. Rina Agustine, one of the managers of PT PNU said,”We have proved that economic initiative can go hand in hand with nature protection.”

PT. PNU also helps marketing the herb in global market. After some initial contacts and sample tests conducted, a deal was signed with L’Herbier du Diosis, a French company that is interested in importing kidney tea leaves from Indonesia, such as those cultivated by agroforest farmers assisted by PT. PNU.

“The export of the herb proves that local farmers can compete in global market. We are calling to herbal-based industry to support this initiative by supplying their herbs from community-based agroforestry!“ said Rina Agustine.

Notes to the Editor

Telapak is a member-based environmental group based in Bogor.

PT. PNU is an independent business unit of Telapak that aim to develop a just and environmentally sound community-based enterprises in Indonesia. PT. PNU has bases in Bogor, Bali and Palu.

PT. PNU has been assisting 450 agro-forest farmers around Gunung Halimun-Salak and Gede-Pangrango National Parks. Those farmers organized in groups develop local economy by cultivating herbs in the forests.

Kidney Tea (Orthosiphon spp.) is an herb growing abundantly in the tropics like Sumatera, Java and Madura. This herb is well known in Indonesia as a traditional remedy for diabetic, common cold, renal diseases. Kidney tea is also used as a base for modern medicine worldwide.

Gede-Pangrango National Park

Part 2

Wednesday, 13 August 2008 is a historical day for the people of Ciwaluh. On that day, located in the office of the national park in Cibodas, Bogor, they had a meeting with the Head of Gede-Pangrango National Park. Representatives of Ciwaluh people came to the meeting, facilitated by Telapak.

The core of the meeting dealt with the planned collaboration between the people and the national park authority to manage forest areas that border the national park and the kampong. The people of Ciwaluh restated their vow to protect the forest, in return to the permit given by the national park to plant medicinal plants between the tree stands in the forest. To be planted by the people are: Kumis Kucing, Kapulaga, Jahe, Temulawak, Rosella, etc. in an agroforestry mixed system.

The National Park gave their permit in principle. The National Park even allows the people to plant non-forested national park areas with fruit and other commercialy important trees. This includes Durian, Rambutan, jungle coffee, Jackfruit, Cempedak, Kaweni, Avocado, Jambu air and Sirsat. With this planting and reforesting the forest will be returned in those places and the people will have another source of income from the harvesting and selling of those fruits.

Mr. Bambang, the Head of the National Park hopes that the meeting will be followed up soon with concrete action plan. He instructed the Section and Resort Heads to ensure the smooth implementation of the collaboration, and that the MoA between the national park and the people of Ciwaluh be formalized soon.

As a follow up of the meeting, on Friday 22 August 2008, the Bogor Section Head of Mts. Gede-Pangrango National Park, Mr. Hariyanto with several of his staffs conducted site visit in Ciwaluh. They met and observed directly the activity of the people of Ciwaluh in managing the forest. They verified that it is true that the people of Ciwaluh has been protecting and wisely utilizing the forest bordering their village.

During the site visit, the national park staffs held a dialogue with the community. During the dialogue, Mr. Hariyanto gave an opportunity to the community to question the national park policies especially and generally any clarification regarding forestry and environmental laws in Indonesia.

The dialogue was then centered towards the status change of the area. It has been known that in the past the forested area that directly borders Kampong Ciwaluh used to be under the jurisdiction of Perhutani. In 2003 those areas were handed over to the national park. This implies a very different management system of the area.

The dialogue has made into light the aspiration of the local community to be permitted to plant trees, in general reforest the area, which will be used later on for housing materials and fuel wood. This is especially in areas which has been deforested before, which currently totals 20 hectares. The aspiration was well received by Mr. Hariyanto, to be processed through the existing formal and legal system by the Head of the National Park.

The meeting was ended by scheduling the next meeting to draft the MoA between the national park and the people of Ciwaluh. Each party will prepare its proposal and discussion points. Telapak will continue to facilitate this process.

To be continued to Part 3
They were have been gone for three days to search for this magic leaves which has a very specific medicinal purpose. Weariness shown in their faces. There were 7 people and for three days they only got 50 kgs of fresh Kacip Fatimah leaves. This is way bellow their harvest volume last year. This is even when they have gone further deep into the forest. Gathering Fatimah is an additional income for them. Usually it gives them a very significant extra income. The price of a kilogram of dried Kacip Fatimah is very expensive.

”Nowadays, it is very difficult to find a Fatimah. It is not like before. Last year when we were lucky we can get up to 200 kg fresh leaves from just one harvest in one area” said Mang Asari.

”Usually where there is a fallen Rasamala tree, there will be many Fatimah. But now they are rare. Even the place where we harvested the previous year, there is now only 2 small leaves”, add Mang Odang.

The truth is the people have their own system in collecting Fatimah. They cut the stick and only collect the leaves of Kacip Fatimah. They leave the remaining sticks on site so that the sticks will grow and blossom again. But this plant indeed grows very slowly. The plant from last year harvest produces only 2 leaves today. Some of the people have tried to plant Kacip Fatimah in their garden without result. Mang Odang is one of them who have planted Kacip Fatimah for 2 years, and it only has 2 leaves now.

Kacip Fatimah grows in places where there is a deep and thick humus and covered from sunshine. They live in a colony between dense big trees. When the forest is destroyed, the Kacip Fatimah is gone too. There will be no more Kacip Fatimah in the future if the forest in Halimun Mountain is not protected.
Gede-Pangrango National Park - Part 1

Living in harmony with the nature is the spirit of the people of Kampong Ciwaluh. They are different from other people who have the tendency of destroying the forest. The people of Ciwaluh has this conservation spirit from long time ago. This spirit and behaviour has spared the kampong from drought, flood, and erotion. The forested area in Ciwaluh is part of the Mts. Gede-Pangrango National Park area.

Ciwaluh’s main sources of livelihood are coffee, kapulaga, and kumis kucing that they plant between the trees in the forest. This is an agroforestry system. Realizing that their livelihood depends on the forest, the farmers organization of Ciwaluh have agreed to meet with the National Park Authority to discuss their responsibility and benefit from managing the forest.

Equiped with their conservationist spirit and practices, they believe that the national park authority will support and endorse their agroforestry system, which will protect the forest in the national park.

The meeting with the national park was facilitated by Telapak, an environmentalk organization based in Bogor, West Java. Telapak has been known to work with indigenous people, farmers, and fishers for environmental sustainablility, economic empowerment, and cultural integrity.

The meeting went very well. Even the Head of the National Park met with the farmers directly, along with almost all regional, section and resort heads. The national park authority confirmed their support for the people’s initiative to protect and wisely utilize the forest area of the national park.

Preparation for getting the acknowledgement from International certification institution is started in may. It started with a meeting with the community to explain the advantage of getting organic acknowledgment from international certification institution. As we have known, the world people awareness is increasing, especially in health matters. They incline to changing to environment friendly and sustainable products.

The organic acknowledgment automatically will make it easier for marketing of various products that Ciwaluh produces.

Among the well known products that Ciwaluh community produced is kidney tea (Orthosiphon stamineus), cardamom, coffee (Coffea sp.) and paddy. Kidney tea production is no less than 12 tons/year, cardamom 5 tons/year, coffee 15 tons/year, and rice about 25 tons/year. With a population of only 80 families or about 400 people the economic condition of Ciwaluh should have been more prosperous. But this is not the case because Ciwaluh can only sell their products very cheaply right now.

One of the requirements to obtain organic certification is the presence of community institution that manages economic activity. In March, 2008 through a series of community meetings, they established a cooperative. While they are still in the process of getting legal documents for the cooperative, this cooperative has been serving Kidney Tea collection and trade, both as raw materieal and in dried form. The cooperative has also educate the people about post-production processing to get the best quality, which is dry but the colour is still green, the stick content is low and water content low.

In the future, the cooperative will serve other products too like organic Kapulaga, coffee, and rice. This cooperative is part of the wider organization, the Koperasi Tanaman obat dan rempah-rempah Jawa Barat, in partnership with PT Poros Nusantara Utama.

In May 2008 they have conducted laboratorium check on the soil samples and kidney tea products from Ciwaluh. The laboratorium check is to ensure that the products are really organic. The laboratorium check shows that there is no pesticide at all in their products and in their soil. Therefore the products also are free from dangerous metal content like Timbal, Cadnium and Mercury.

To support post-harvest activity, the Ciwaluh Cooperative has built a drying room and storage facility. The drying room is used to fasten the drying process of kidney tea leaves, Kapulaga, and coffee. This facility will be very usefull especially during the rainy season, December, January and February.

The storehouse is very usefull to store the product that has been bought from cooperative, before it is stored by the Central cooperative. With proper storehouse, the product quality will be kept from damage. Usually, after it is collected in certain volume, kidney tea will be sent to central cooperative storehouse at Cigombang, 10 kilometres from Ciwaluh.

We all hope that the process of organic certification will run smoothly and it will increase the economic prosperity of Ciwaluh community.

West Java Medical Plant Cooperative to gather with Telapak works in Ciwaluh Village is supported by HPSP (Holticultura Partnership Support Programme) dan Japan Enveronmental Education Forum (JEFF)

Nangela, the new Writhe of Organic Village

Nangela is one of the kampongs of Desa Pabangon, Leuwiliang SubDistrict, Bogor. Nangela has a population of 150 families or 700 people. It is 15 kilometres away from the capital of Kecamatan Leuwiliang. The kampong is surrounded by Perhutani forest area. Nevertheless, since 2002, the status of forest area has changed into Gunung Halimun-Salak National Park area. Being isolated and far from nearest towns, nangela is not as much touched by development projects. Eventhough the village can be reached by motorbike or car, but the condition of the road which is heavily damaged hampered the resource mobilisation stripe.

The poverty that can be seen in this kampong is caused by bad road infrastructure and lack of prominent products that Nangela people can count on. The major produce form the kampong is rice. The harvest is enough to meet their own daily necesity. Half of produce is sold and exchanged with other things.

Seeing this condition, it seems that there is nothing that can be expected from this village. So is the assumption of most people around it and also the government over Nangela society. But, if it is observed deeper, there are various potensials from the nature that is promising. Surrounded by forested area, this kampong is actually very beautiful and fertile. Plentiful fresh water from the springs in the mountain provides them freshwater even in dry season so they can plant paddy throughout the year.

Another product from their lands are Albasia wood (Paraseriantes sp.), brown sugar, cardamom and banana.

The most important and valuable potential of this kampong are their harmony, solidarity and their social integrity. The local indigenous institutions is very powerful. Now, it is the time to bring these potencial into a better livelihood.

Recently, Nangela people has joint the initiative of the Koperasi Tanaman Obat dan Rempah Jawa Barat (West Java Medicinal and Herbal Cooperative). This cooperative is organizing farmers who are cultivating medicinal plants around Halimun-Salak and Gede-Pangrango National Parks. The spirit and enthusiasm of the Nangela community to join the cooperative has sparked a fresh energy for a better livelihood.

Meetings have been regularly conducted. The first action is socializing organic behaviour amoing the community. This action is followed up by establishment of a cooperative group as a sub of Koperasi Primer Karyasari. The activity is then continued by Kidney tea cultivation. In the future, organic agriculture will be directed onto the whole product that has been produced by Nangela community including paddy.

On June 2008, together with the management of Koperasi Primer Karyasari, Nangela people conducted a trainng of Bokasi fertilizer making. The basic material for Bokasi fertilizer is animal manure and husk or hull of rice, there is plenty of it available in the kampong, so that the people do not have to buy or import any of it from outside. Initially this fertilizer will be used to kidney tea cultivation. Next, it will be applied for the rice field. They expect that in the beginning of 2009, the whole rice field area will already use the fertilizer. The using of Bokasi fertilizer, besides cutting the cost of paddy production, will prove that the harvest they get will be as good as the harvest with chemical fertilizer. Moreover, the taste and durability of it is much better.

The area of kidney tea cultivation is 7 hectares which is planted by 40 farmers. Actually more farmers want to join the experiment also. But, the kidney tea seed is limited. It is expected that in the next few week, the needs for seddlings will be met.

It is expected that the harvest of this inaugural planting of kidney tea will be conducted on December 2008 or January 2009. With the joining of the Nangela community to the Koperasi Tanaman Obat dan Rempah Jawa Barat, the cooperative’s members and production volume is expanded. It is hoped that the spirit to become organic will grow and taken in by more and more villages.
This DEMPLOT is owned and managed by farmer group Pak Tani ORGANIK which is founded since April 2004. They are conducting vegetable cultivating with organic way. There were plenty of farmer group who has visited and making a training of the organic vegetable cultivating.

The area of the DEMPLOT is 2 hectares, it has provided various model means that complete the learning and available for anyone who wants to make organic vegetable cultivating. To fulfill the needs of organic fertiizer, they raise sheep and take its manure as organic fertilizer. To fulfill the needs of organic medicinals, they plant medicinal plants. They allocate location to make organic fertilizer, an area for cultivation of seedlings, and the place to stay overnight for the training participants.

Actually, Kelompok Tani Lindung Harapan is vegetable farmer group that is quite advanced. They have a truck that serves vegetables transportation from the cooperative member to the market. Still, during this time, thay are planting the vegetables conventionally, such as using factory made fertilizer, using pesticide to cope with the vegetable's pest.

Realizing the importance of health, the environmental conservation and the cost of vegetables cultivating in production price with conventional system, they are highly interested to see and directly meet the farmer who had cultivated vegetable with organic system. Petani Lindung Harapan would like to compare and prove the truth that organic farming is as good as conventional farming, and it says, organic farming is cheaper than the other production system.

Gati is a name of a village in Desa Sukaharja, kecamatan Cijeruk, Kabupaten Bogor. It is still a mystery why the pineapple that is planted in this area has different taste even though the same variety is planted in other place. The community of Gati village plants the pineapple among the trees in Salak mountain area which is bordering their village.

Gati pineapple is well known for its cute shape, sweetness and freshness. Its skin is thinner and the colour is bright when it is ripe. Gati pineapple has rather less water content than other variety. The sweet taste and less water content make this pineapple suitable for basic commodity of pineapple jam making, and good for cookies blend.

The history of this pineapple is long enough and it was almost extinct because Perhutani did not allow people to plant pineapple in the forest. The pineapple had been mowed until nothing left for the community. Perhutani gave one condition that the community must watch over the forest in that area.

This pineapple is planted and maintained without chemical fertilizer and pesticide, only with animal manure, grass or pineapple stalk that its fruit has been taken. Perhaps this the reason why the pineapple has sweet taste. It is categorised as Organic pineapple, because it is free from pesticide and chemical fertillizer, so it is good and heathy to be consumed.

What is Organic Farming? Organic Farming is commonly understood as an agriculture which uses natural fertilizer without any chemical pesticide. This is not a complete explanation. The broader meaning of organic revolves around the meaning of ”Organ or Organism”, and being organic is about servicing life in a natural way and not forcing anything into the natural system.

When implemented in personal daily life, organic attitude is as an attitude that is in balance with the nature, not damaging, not polluting, and in constant arbitrary with factors that can cause disturbance of the nature. Smoking, drinking alcohol, stay up all night long, too much work, uncontrolled emotion are examples of inorganic attitudes.

How 'organic' is implemented in agriculture? Organic agriculture is an agriculture that balances the entire elements of nature. It maintains life forms in the farm or field of agriculture, keeping them in balance between one another, dependent on each other and sustain each other. Killing caterpillar or any intruding insect by chemical is an inorganic action. Why? because it harms and eliminates other organism that is actually useful, like decomposing bacteria, caterpillar eater, even human being itself.

Wise organic action is creating a balance by giving more opportunity to another element which is considered eating or driving out the disturbing insects and caterpillars. The use of natural pesticide is mostly to drive out the disturbance factors which disturb the area of organic farming.

The concept of ”sustaining each other” when it is thought about in depth contains a meaning that the application of farming by using the whole available elements in nature without depending on another side. Organic farming should keep down the cost, because the farmers themselves provide necessary elements such as seedlings and fertilizer from their existing environment. The trend of organic today is captured by fertilizer plants and pharmacy industry who are now creating natural fertilizer and natural pesticide in consumer market packaging. This is of course an understandable course, however this is not fully in line with the true meaning of organic agriculture. Purchasing fertilizer and pesticide with organic label will in the end continue farmers dependence to industrial parties.
The emperor, Seng Nung is well known as the father of Chinese traditional medicinal plants. The legend says that tea is found unexpectedly. One day, the emperor was making a medicinal ingredients on the corner of his garden. And then the wind was blowing fast and the leaves fell down. inexpressibly, some leaves got into the pot of boiling water. When the emperor took it, he was admired with the taste of that water that he never felt before. This steaming water become next a new beverage. And the habit of drinking the tea was becoming tradition in the castle inner circle of Chinese empire.

Several centuries after, The tradition of having tea began to become a part of world society habit, not only for Castle circle. the specific taste of tea can be enjoyed in any condition.

The benefit of tea for health
It appears that tea not only delicious and fresh, it is good as medicinal therapy too. Researches found that more than 400 component are contained in tea, the main component is polifenol compound which is known as KATEKIN.

Polifenol compound has a benefit in getting rid of free radicals?? As we have known, the free radicals that is produced by our body during oxidation process is harmful for our health because it impedes blood circulation, so it may cause heart disease. The free radicals makes our skin wrinkled and black stained.

Medically, the KATEKIN is good to reduce cancer risk, tumor, reduce the blood cholesterol, prevent high blood pressure, kill the bacteria and fungus, influenza virus and prevent smell breath.

Researches also show that drinking tea will help increase the concentration and the ability to solve the problem. In China, green tea usually used as external medicine for wound, skin disease and water bug on foot. It is also useful to prevent dental decay, decreasing sugar content in blood, preventing the porous of bond and as a weight reducer.

Researches prove that by having 2 cups of tea everyday, it will reduce the risk of heart disease down to half of those who never had it. It may reduce the risk of stroke attack. The amount of content and the benefit of tea for health encourage the researcher to always find other new thing about the use of tea. (Andi Nur Alam Syah, S.T.P.,M.T; Taklukkan Penyakit Dengan Teh Hijau; AgroMediaPustaka; Maret 2006)
Organic Tea Teh Organik

Nowadays, almost the whole tea product comes from large scale tea plantation. They have a large area to support tea leafs production supply. Manufacturing factory is supported also with high technology equipments from the initial process until its grading and packaging. It is rarely found that manufacturing industry is not supported by large tea plantation as its production supporting system.

However, the tea industry at household scale is still can be found. It is done by the society of Tapos and Gunung Sari villages which are located in the foot of Halimun – Salak mountains. The tea plantation that they've been growing wildly without any touch of modern farming technology. It grows naturally among another plants in community plantation and the forest without any fertilizer and pesticide. So its healthier for tea lovers in enjoying this tea because it is categorized as organic tea. This tea is suitable as a herbals therapy to prevent various diseases.

Organic Tea Manufacturing
The community of Tapos and Gunung sari are making organic tea with simple way and simple equipments. The volume of their production is restricted also, about 100 kilograms/month.

This people’s knowledge of how to produce organic tea is passed on from the older generation. Firstly, the tip of a leaf is picked out from that plantation area or forest and then it is withered for one night. Next, it is heated by frying it without oil. They use charcoal or charcoal from coconut in withering process. And then it is fried one more time until it gets dry enough and smells good.

The entire process from picking out until it becomes organic tea takes 2 days. The organic tea that they have been producing is called Green Tea.

Another processing is, when the tea leafs got withered, it is heated by the ray of the sun until its dry enough with 25% of water level content. After that, the leafs are heated by fumigation over the charcoal. The organic tea that have been produced by this way is called as Black Tea. The taste and the aroma of Black organic tea is lighter, it is not as bitter as Green organic tea.

The Marketing of Organic tea
Mostly, organic tea product of the community is sold locally and becoming daily beverage of Sundanese people around Halimun -Salak mountain range area. Even thought the processing is done traditionally, the taste is very specific and fresher than other tea that circulates in the markets.

For organic tea lover, presently organic tea is available and can be bought at Kedai Telapak, which is located in Gedung Alumni IPB, next to travel bus parking area- Baranang Siang_ Bogor, (www.kedaitelapak.kippyku.com). It is cheap, and you can enjoy the organic tea with special taste and free wireless internet or while you gather with your colleagues in Kedai Telapak.

Have a nice try ..
Because of the intact forest, the kampong has not experienced any drought, which is usually experienced by many other kampongs in different locations during the dry season.
The practice and way of living of kampong Ciwaluh is an example for other communities living around forest areas. Together with the cooperative, the practice of Ciwaluh will be replicated in other places, especially where there are farmer groups utilizing forest area for agricultural commodities.

E.4 Genteng Farmers Group, Wangunjaya Village, Ciambar SubDistrict & Cibilik Farmers Group, Nengerang Village, Cicurug SubDistrict, Sukabumi District, West Java
The location of both kampongs directly borders Gede-Pangrango National Park. The main livelihood of the people in these kampongs is agriculture. Their main products are casava and vegetables. Almost all of their farms is forest area which used to be under the jurisdiction of Perhutani. Perhutani allowed the people to cultivate the forest area in a mixed-crops system. However, since cultivating cassava requires open land, the forest condition is getting worse. More forest area is cleared to plant cassava. Because the change of the status of the area into national park area, needed now new land use planning so that the area can serve its function as conservation area, while maintaining the livelihood of the local community.
Facilitated by Telapak, the West Java Medicinal Plants Cooperative is working together with the national park authority to discuss with the community on steps to take for the land use planning. The cooperative offers an alternative solution by developing medicinal plants in a mixed-crops system. One of the species chosen is kumis kucing which can grow well under tree stands. This plan involves reforestation project in the location, to be conducted by the local community themselves. The medicinal plant that will be planted in the two kampongs are short term crops, therefore it can replace cassava as a source of income for the people of Genteng and Cibilik.

Product

1.
