April showers mean spring is here (or at least nearby), so let’s turn up the heat with more roller derby action! This time, the Foxy Rollers will meet up with the Deathbridge Derby Dames on the track at another fully licensed event at the Cypress Centre. Just a few short years ago, the Foxy Rollers travelled to Lethbridge, AB to play their first ever official derby bout against the Dames. Now we are welcoming them to our home track and are excited to show them what we’ve learned. Come out and support the Kidney Foundation!

Snowflake Soiree

Community View Lions Club presents the 3rd annual CMHA Snowflake Soiree on Friday, January 30th, 2015.

Taking place at Higdon Hall. Cocktails will begin at 6 PM, and supper at 7 PM. Entrainment and auction to follow.

Come and watch the Foxy Rollers face off against the Bow Valley Roller Derby Association’s Lady Macs on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at the Cypress Centre Pavilion. Those jammers will be trying their best to slip through the pack like bad bananas with greasy black peels!

The Foxy Rollers started their 2014/2015 season off with a win against the Highway 14 Roller Derby Association’s Steamrollers and they’re looking to do it again. This is a first time match up for both of these teams, so it could go either way. One thing is for sure – everyone’s going to play their best and put on a good show! So come out and make some noise, noise, noise, noise!

Chinese-Canadian author Chunqing Wang will be coming to the Medicine Hat Public Library on November 9, 2014, at 2:00 p.m., for a free presentation about life in a Chinese village. She will be showing photographs of her village, past and present, and will be discussing lifestyles of rural Chinese villagers today and through the past hundred years. From persistent poverty at the end of the last emperor’s reign, through the Japanese invasion, the Communist takeover, and several decades of Communist schemes like the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, Ms. Wang will discuss the effects of war, politics and market reforms on her family and her fellow villagers.

The presentation will be reveal parts of the real China that very few visitors have a chance to see. “Most tourists travel to the big cities or go on pre-packaged tours, but it’s difficult for an outsider to get a sense of rural China,” Ms. Wang says. “Because hundreds of millions of people live in villages–more than the total population of Canada and the United States combined–it’s worth knowing about if you’re interested in China at all.” As China becomes more and more urbanized, the experiences of Chinese peasant farmers are being forgotten: but her new memoir assists by committing to print her experiences and the experiences of villagers from Shanxi Province.

Ms. Wang will be reading portions of her book: You May as Well Sing, Brother: Seventy Years of Strange but True Stories of Adventure, Determination, Cruelty, Bravery, Survival and Especially Love from Inside a Chinese Village. In this memoir, compelling stories told in the first person show every human foible, folly, virtue and vice, as the villagers describe themselves, their neighbors, and those they have encountered along the way. (The memoir will be available for optional purchase for $15.00.)

Ms. Wang will be accompanied by her husband, Chris Denholm, who will provide his perspective as one of the few westerners to stay in a Chinese village for an extended visit.

Refreshments will be served.

Note: Because some of the topics, including war, persecution and suffering would be sensitive to young audiences, the presentation is intended for adults only.

Deborah Forbes: The Princess and the Plesiosaur

Deborah Forbes’ small steel figures in classic ‘princess’ dresses made of lace, crochet and tatting move through a constellation of light cast onto the darkened gallery floor. The starry constellation takes the form of a plesiosaur fossil, with its background shifting through outer space, fire, water, and wind in grass. In this mysterious and magical environment the Medicine Hat artist and educator invokes the mantra that ‘nothing is lost’ throughout time: energy simply transforms from one state to another. Forbes’ installation interweaves the pioneering work of early 19th century female paleontologist Mary Anning in revealing and analyzing fossils, with the equally enduring icon of the princess in European history; with textile handiwork traditionally associated with women, and with the uses of children, especially girls, for economic gain through the centuries.

Deborah Forbes has presented her work in solo exhibitions in Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario and in group exhibitions throughout Canada, in the United States and the United Kingdom. She has received support for her work from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts including a Major Project Grant for the touring exhibition Shadow Princesses. She currently teaches in the Visual Communications and Education Programs at Medicine Hat College.

Shirley Brown: Birds: The Apocalypse

In 1996 rural Manitoba artist Shirley Brown found 29 bird skeletons in the old cook stove of her parent’s abandoned home. She explains that “the discovery of these beautiful creatures along with personal losses compelled me to investigate the brief and precarious nature of time… and allowed me to explore my strong fascination with unexpected disaster.” After paintings and drawings which pictured the birds as ancient beings from a lost civilization, Brown imagined the culture in which they may have lived, creating a whimsical contemporary museum display, maps and remnants of ‘armies’ from the bird civilization’s final apocalypse, as well as ossuaries and burial boxes. The exhibition’s poignancy, decorative beauty and dark humour provoke thoughts of human civilization and its many ruins and mysteries, through the passage of time. Shirley Brown is a self-educated artist, pursuing many workshops, residencies and classes with professional artists from 1987 to 2003, following a year-long mentorship with Diana Thorneycroft through the Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art Advisory Program, Winnipeg, Manitoba. She has exhibited her work in solo exhibitions throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, as well as in group exhibitions throughout Canada and internationally. Her work resides in public, corporate and private collections and has been supported by grants from the Manitoba Arts Council, the Banff Centre for the Arts and the Canada Council for the Arts.
