Yes, this blog has officially been hijacked for the winter by my inner ski bumm. Sorry, but that’s what I feel like writing about.

In the video below is one of the ballsiest, most unnatural ski hucks (tricks) I’ve ever seen. It’s a switch double backflip; which is just plain crazy. A switch backflip is much different from a regular backflip. In a forward-facing backflip the skier rotates clockwise and spots the landing once they get beyond being 180 degrees inverted. In a switch backflip you go off the jump backwards and rotate counter-clockwise. This means you don’t see your landing. Once the skier gets inverted they’re actually looking up, not down, hill. You’ll see this in the video when the skier is about to land. He can’t really tell how far he is from the ground.

Check it out.

I read a funny story this morning about Breckenridge, Colorado passing local legislation that amounts to a symbolic legalization of marijuana. See, marijuana is still illegal in the state of Colorado and the cops in Breckenridge have to enforce state laws over feckless local ordinances. Apparently, Breckendridge’s permanent residents and the town board decided they’d had enough of the cops constantly busting the teeming population of slovenly bro-down ski/snowboard brahs and chics.

Contrary to what the town “hopes” this gesture will accomplish, I think it’s going to make the cops bust even more kids.

MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION
DENVER (AP) – Voters in Breckenridge are high on pot — or at least legalizing it. A ballot measure passed overwhelmingly yesterday in the Colorado ski town that would legalize marijuana. Voters gave thumbs-up to the proposal to allow adults over 21 to have up to an ounce of pot. But the voters could just be blowing smoke. Marijuana possession is still a state crime for people without medical clearance. Supporters hope the vote sends a message to local authorities about law enforcement priorities.

Here’s a video of Christopher Walken reading a snippet of Lady Ga Ga’s song “Poker Face” in his classic Walken style. I think it’s funny. Also, bonus Walken clip of him reading Goodnight Moon from the Simpsons back in the day. SELF-ENFORCED REDACTION: That was Jay Mohr doing Walken on the Simpsons, I forgot.

Here’s a neat little video from the the people at Coolhunting that quickly documents the work and time that go into producing a Burton snowboard. Basically, every board is still, more or less, made entirely by hand at the original flagship factory in Burlington, VT.

It’s important that we humans comprehend the energy and resources that go into making the things we use and consume. This, afterall, is the only way we’ll finally get a handle on how reckless we’ve been for the past 20 years and change our ways.

Take a look at the pride the Burton dudes take in what they do; I’m a big admirer.

As an aside, it’s kind of funny to read a Coolhunting post about an outdoor sport when their real strength is writing about an iPod case that looks like an old Sony Walkman. My point is, just admit you don’t know a goddamn thing about skiing instead of writing this doggerel. This, an excerpt from a recent post on Line Skis’ Eric Pollard pro model:

“While we’ve yet to give them a proper test run, Line’s all-terrain Eric Pollard Pro (pictured above, click on image for detail) and Blend maple macroblock core skis (pictured below) have us excited for the upcoming snow season.”

Who let Teen People writer, Karen Day, get ahold of this post? Karen, why do I think you’ve never set foot on any kind of mountain, much less one with snow on it.

I’ve been watching the Dew Tour for the past couple of months and the tricks they are doing blow my mind.

The series, 5 Months to Freedom, chronicles their senior year in high school as they try and figure out if they’re going to graduate, and do they even want to. I think most of us would say, “you guys should graduate, you can’t ride a bike forever.” But the thing is, they’re so good, they can ride a bike for ever. And, make a lot more money doing it than the average high school graduate makes.
