Here are the audio files for our interview with Cleveland mayoral candidate Frank Jackson. In Part One, Bill Callahan’s first question is about the poverty headline in today’s PD. Tim Russo starts right in with Walmart and SYC, where Jackson gives us the narrative on why the legislation against it never got done. I got my first question in after about an hour, where I asked about casinos and the convention center. Jackson’s response is in Part Three, where he proposes city-owned casinos.

Bill Callahan, Tim Russo and I spent an hour with Cleveland mayor candidate Bill Patmon last night @ Talkies in Ohio City.

I tried an different set up for recording them, but still am not happy. I have to boost the audio with Audacity to make it loud enough.

The first session of Meet the Bloggers is with mayoral candidate Bob Triozzi. Bob meet Tim Russo, Bill Callahan and I at Talkies Coffee. He went on the record about a bunch of different topics including the school levy, Steelyard Commons, and his favorite Italian restaurant. I’ve broken the audio down into three segments:

I’ll reserve any commentary until after I have a chance to listen to the podcasts again, but I’m hoping Tim and Bill might post something. I would like to say that I found Bob very engaging (as evidenced by the first part of the recording where Tim, Bill, and I respond to his question about our blogs) as well as enthusiastic about our questions on the issues.

Democracy Guy comments on Lynch:

Among other things, he thinks Ohio Republican governor Bob Taft should resign, even though he voted for Taft in 2002. On his residency, I know he thinks this is nitpicky, but when your website begs for clarity on when you’ve lived in Cleveland, you’re begging for it to be an issue. His website, and all his campaign literature, says the following… “Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he now lives in Cleveland’s Ward 11.”

Highly misleading, Mr. Lynch. We learned today that after he was born in a Cleveland hospital the next day his first stop was Cleveland Hts. The first time he’s lived in Cleveland is when he moved into the city last December. He’s lived the rest of his life in Cleveland Hts. and Euclid, where he was mayor. If you go with his website’s description of his residency, somehow he became mayor of Euclid without ever living in Euclid. I agree with Lynch, that the man truly is a “Clevelander”, just as anyone living in the surrounding suburbs would consider themselves a “Clevelander”. But geez, David, just shoot straight, and maybe no one will care when you lived here.

Ted Strickland: Cargill planning to build ethanol production facility. They have no intention of paying CAT tax. Build their plant here, but sell product outside of state.

8:00 Bills question regarding education

TS: Inner city not different then the area he lives in. Democrats need to win. Coming close is like coming close to a landing strip in an airstrip. I win in areas where dems typically don’t win. Kept his progressive democratic ideas. We need a governor that will pull us together. Fashion a common agenda.

15:00 Bill’s follow up

TS: targeted investment thru dept of development. build on regional strengths, not cannabilize each other. Urban agenda.

18:00 Jack asks about foster small business.

TS: Department of Development has lots of money.

JR: Why do they go there?

TS: Maybe it’s the allure of travel..

TS: As I talk to entrepreneurs, healthcare is a big issue. We can also do more thru universities. The have a responsibility to their regions. Encourage partnerships with June Holley’s of the world. Talking to a software developer, most government programs are targeted at bricks and mortar.

TS: Biggest threat is Bush eroding wall between church and state. “I am unwilling to conside to the other side what is moral or religious…” I will not foster hate or discrimination.

TS: Filed a friend of the court brief supporting lawsuit. “We’re never going to be a healthy state if we don’t address this issue.”

TS: Yes. Opposed to vouchers, because they’re undemocratic. Public dollars = public oversight.

G: Follow up question. Are we at a time… where we can use technology to change the dynamic?
