Youtube Diary # 1: LOSING IT (Subscribers)

(My first wave of viewers) left when I got bigger.

I'm not sure why. I was reaching a point where I was averaging like 300 hits a video with under 700 subscribers..... then things expanded and I doubled my numbers (1,400) but suddenly almost at once all the old people left or became inactive and the new people took over but only 300 of those new sunscribers are active.

So now I have over 1,500 subscribers but videos will only get 300 views, sometimes less. It's very depressing, I wish I knew why people keep leaving as I grow. And I know it's not all related to me because I've noticed people that I used to see in my comments regularly and also posted videos just aren't posting videos any more. But sometimes I'll stalk them and their feed and see they are still watching videos... just not mine. And that hurts a little but you can't make people like what you do....No matter how hard you try.

But even now, I've had growth everyday this month but my views still seem to be shrinking. Not sure why. It's like you can't win. I discovered last week that Black Nerd Comedy, one of my youtube heroes is featuring me in his sub box, then later this week he gave me a shout out on his blogging channel. A) I don't deserve it but I'll take it! B) I got a few new subscribers but I seriously feel like these new people aren't going to watch. In this same week I had a person on youtube call me a celebrity and I refuted it like.. dude, look at my views... I'm nothing. I'm flattered but I'm not seeing what people are seeing. If I'm such a hot shot, why can't I get at least half of my audience to care when I post a video?

And don't get me wrong, I love my new and old subscribers, I just wish you people would either watch me or unsubscribe in mass. If you aren't watching you're dead weight. And I want you to go. I don't care about numbers but it's embarassing to have that many sub but so few watch.

I know a lot of is due to my viral video. 90% of those subs are hive mind subscribers... they showed up because it was a hot video for the week and everyone else was doing it. A lot of them came from reddit, which I'm geatful for but saddened by their lack of actual care.

It just sucks because I work hard on these videos and feels SOMETIMES like I'm wasting my time.

Instead of making excuses for my absence, instead I'm giving you this. It's NOT A PARODY...this is happening! I've never been more excited for something that looked so ridiculous. My face was pretty much stone until the title came up. It's so awesome that Tim Burton got this made.

Someone in the comments said something that made me laugh... "What's Next? ..George Bush, Power Ranger?" And I say to that... I sure hope so. I'd buy tickets for that in a heart beat. He may have been a crappy president but he'd make a sweet action star...in spandex.

I'll be hitting my 5 month youtube anniversary next month.

I'll also be turning 27 on the 30th after that same month.

I've considered quitting youtube twice since I started making videos regularly... mostly because I'm a giant baby and when videos don't preform as expected I take it deeply personally. Part of that is because I look at my videos as another former of art and because I'm a vlogger, that art is usually personal in nature.

You see I figured out a few months ago that EVERYONE is doing EVERYTHING. Nothing I do will be truly original... so instead of talking about the news, creating 5 minute TV shows and other things I don't care about I decided to get personal...I decided to put the "me" (you) in youtube...and it worked out awesomely. I quickly gained more subscribers and my videos generated discussion... However I learned my new audience only wants certain things from me and not necessarily the same things I want to give consistently.

I've also noticed that 500 subs does not equal 500 views... (I'm at 530 BTW)...Rougly half of my 500 or so viewers actually watch my videos...and even less than that comment or rate, which is typical. It used to bother me until realized that even people with 1 million subs will average 600,000 views sometimes so I must be doing pretty good... BUT THEN I compare myself to people like Deshawn Raw that just started this year, got a viral video video is already at 30,000 subscribers... whats hard is I witnessed it all happen right before my eyes. I was one of his original subscribers so I remember when dude only had 2,000 and it's crazy because I was trying just as hard as he was and he blew past me with one awesome video.

So this whole time I've been trying to make that video and I thought I had it with " Power Glove"..I got support from a few major blogs but the biggest one totally ignored me and to this day I'm not sure why. I've seen them support worst videos and content so I'm not sure where I'm falling short. And maybe I'm not falling short, maybe I'm doing it wrong by hoping on one blog.... maybe I need to rethink my marketing strategy.

So I continue on and I hop on one topic after another and it seems to be working... but then I get impatient when I see other people with faster growth than mine. It sucks because NOW, it's hard for me to make videos because I feel like everything I make needs to marketable, it needs to be something people will want to share, but I don't want to pander and it makes the hobby feel like work...and it makes me want to quit.

Months prior I then killed the pokemon gangsta nerd because while the concept was hilarious, I feel that he peaked in episode 2 and everything from that point fwd was just bad. I however decided to bring him back this week..after a spark of inspiration from "the food critic". It'll mostly be an experiment but if I enjoy doing it and my audience enjoys me doing it..I'll keep going.

And that's the overall message I'm sending myself... "Keep Going" and stop worying about numbers... just make what you like and if something hits be happy.. if it never happens just be greatful for what you do have..I mean really the average person walking this earth doesn't have 500 fans or even 250 that would care about anything he does or has to say... but I do.

Pretty on point..seriously worth a watch.

I've watched the entire series... both seasons and the movie/OVA. I was an avid AMG fan until I discovered that it doesn't end. In fact the manga is still happening in Japan...and the anime has no conclusion, which means no satisfaction. I love the show but it's frustrating to watch. My favorite plot point is where the little sister becomes an adult and starts being hot instead of annoying....and I just called an anime character hot, it's time to stop talking.

Confession Time:

I discovered Locomotive Curt today thanks to Nate's Vlogs Employee Evaluation Series (a must see might I add)....and while we can all agree he sucks at everything he's trying to do, I have to admit it's awesomely entertaining and makes me very jealous that I'm putting lot's of work into making some what decent (maybe even good) videos and he blows up by being terrible...which I guess isn't a shocking concept and only cushioned by the fact that people don't subscribe enmass to terrible things and his success isn't sustainable... Still at the end of the day I admit that I'm hating him just a tiny bit because while I don't want to be known for sucking, part of me would like the same exposure.

And don't get me wrong, I get that in order to find success these days you have to either be HORRIBLE, LUCKY or EXTREMELY IMPRESSIVE... I still wish the the regular dudes could get more love.

Here's the run down, the World Champion of Magic the Gathering goes on a date with a writer for Gizmodo (a tech blog), he tells her on the date of his world champion nerd status and she decides that he should have warned her before she accepted the date and he is thus a creep that infiltrated the dating site. She decides that no other quality mattered and writes a full article about him on Gizmodo. The readers come to Jon's defense because he's one of their own and basically call for the woman's head for being so shallow and rejecting a geek based on his geekiness...

Not certainly the worst Pokemon themed music video but I simply can't stand the song that they are covering. Actually, I think making it about Pokemon has made it better. From now on when this song comes on the radio (yup, they still make those)..I'm going to sing "Pokemon in the House Tooonight" over it instead of just changing the station or plugging in my ipod.

Also a special nod goes to Jesse (who is also the same woman who play's all the other characters)..for being one step closer to a living anime character and while I'm at it, a high five to Ash for having a girl that's not only attractive but also supportive of your youtube thang. Where can I get me one of those? ...But dude, seriously we didn't need the shots of her in the bra. Yes she looks good but fan service is tacky and even more so in real life than in anime. I love Screen Team's videos but I think someone needs to talk to them about where to draw the line. Trading hits for "tits" is not cool.
