Megaphone produced a film for Just Kids Maryland called The Truth About Our Youth about the charging Youth as Adults. In light of the announcement of Baltimore City funding a new Juvenile Detention Center and a new bill signed by Governor Hogan on youth in adult jails we felt we should share new updates. Megaphone Project is a Robin Hood type of non-profit film production company. Our purpose is to give advocates for a better society a way to amplify the voices of the underheard, harnessing the wonderfully effective but horribly expensive power of film, in campaigns for social justice. The Baltimore Sun called us “Baltimore’s leading practitioner of an unusual form ofcinematography that highlights social issues.” Actually, our films don’t just “highlight” social issues; they are quite specifically designed to provoke social change.

The way it works is that we are commissioned by a group to make a film addressing a given issue. We help the group think through issues like the target audience, the parameters of the topic, the length, and the most effective way to make their argument cinematically. And then we shoot, edit, and produce, hand in hand with the group. You can see more details on our process

There are currently 9 board members, Baltimore professionals and activists with an interest in film and social change. The Megaphone Project has completed some 40 productions, on topics ranging from tenant eviction and gay marriage to community conflict resolution, and there are now 2 more underway, with our first international video next year. You can see examples of our work in our films

We want to offer our services to you, if you have a project which needs a film component. For example, you may be trying to interest your community in supporting a project, and you need an effective way of presenting your appeal. Or you are already engaged in such a project, and a film may be a logical tool with which to awaken the City Council, or a foundation. It may help you fundraise, or educate a particular population.
