It’s finally done! I am so thrilled to say that the bed quilt I have been working on for over a year is complete and we have been sleeping under it for a week now. Making a quilt this large was quite the challenge… mostly because each step took so much longer to complete than a smaller quilt and the task each time seemed so daunting. Last week I made Ainsley’s Easter dress, the most complicated apparel sewing that I’ve done! I already had this great pattern and decided to go for it for Easter Sunday. Let me just say this was so fun! I had a blast challenging myself to make something new and different and expand my sewing skills. It turned out beautiful and exactly what I had in mind, plus the pattern goes up to size 8/9, so she’ll have many more of these <a href="http://figgyspatterns.com/patterns/scirocco-e-pattern/" target="_blank">Scirocco dresses</a>! My Mom is the president of an organization that is doing a silent auction to raise money for charity and asked me to contribute some things… so I did! I am the new quilting instructor over at a new modern fabric store called <a href="http://hiddenyardagehonolulu.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Hidden Yardage</a>! They have sewing classes and do alterations as well!! They have a beautiful selection of fabric and had some apparel sewing classes, but no quilting yet (They just opened in September). I had been in there a few times and talked with Dana and Laurie about <a href="https://www.facebook.com/OahuModernQuiltGuild" target="_blank">The Modern Quilt Guild Oahu</a> that I helped start up, so when they were looking for an instructor I told them I was interested and it ended up working out!</p> <p style="text-align: center;"></p> <p>I will be teaching Thursday nights and my first class will be a <a href="http://hiddenyardagehonolulu.wordpress.com/2013/03/20/workshop-announcement-color-theory-choosing-fabrics-for-quilts/" target="_blank">Color Theory: Choosing Fabrics for Quilts Workshop</a>. Some of the feedback I got from Laurie was that sometimes people see this gorgeous fabric but then they are stuck… not sure what to do or where to start. So this workshop will help with fabric combinations, scale, classic quilt patterns and hands on practice with fabric and examples.</p> <p>Then I will start a <a href="http://hiddenyardagehonolulu.wordpress.com/2013/03/20/new-class-announcement-quilting-101/" target="_blank">Quilting 101</a> class. It will run 4 weeks for 2.5 hours each week and you will learn how to make a baby patchwork quilt from start to finish by the end of the class. Everything from proper cutting, piecing, ironing, basting, quilting, binding… all of the basic steps will be taught so that the student has the skills to go home and make more quilts!</p> <p>If you or anyone you know is local and interested, send them on over. I am so excited to teach some students in person and not on YouTube… although I love the virtual teaching world as well.
