Great Melges MC Scow Racing at Eagle Lake

Article courtesy of Ted Keller — May 11-12 saw the inaugural Eagle Lake Open MC Regatta. Eagle Lake Sailing Club is located in the Southwest corner of Michigan, just over the state line from Elkhart, IN. They have an active MC fleet that has been growing and improving together. The next development step to follow is "they gotta regatta."

A fleet of 18 MCs showed up, ready to brave the predicted weather conditions and take on the competition. The forecast was pretty sketchy with cool temperatures, breezy, and rain likely.

PRO, and ELSC Commodore, Brian Reedstrom got the racing off Saturday morning. Winds were from the West and puffy as the group sailed out to the start. Shifts would range from NW to SW on regular intervals. Starting lines were square and gave enough room for the fleet to line up and launch. The priority for the sailors was getting to that first shift. Courses were W5 with a leeward gate.

Race 1 saw the wind shift hard to the SW in the last few seconds before the gun. The breeze settled down into 5-7 mph range, at times even lighter. There was a very tempting lift that could pull you up under the South shore and then leave you marooned. Boats who stayed farther right and out in the lake seemed to have the better pressure. Highlight moment was Urs Geiger from Lake Fenton sailing a great first leg to lead the fleet up to the top.

For Race 2 the course moved to match the SW breeze and the fleet got off on a squared-up course with plenty of tactical opportunities. Wind was now in the 8-12 range. Another great starting line and nice long legs that made for about a 40 minute race. Highlight moment was Mike Keenan from Hoover working up from the back to get to 8th.

The group broke for a quick lunch and, watching the weather window, aimed to get two more races off in the afternoon.

Race 3 set up on the very same SW course, winds now 10-14. Some rust was coming off for those beginning the season and the group began to charge the starting line more assertively, resulting in the only general recall. The fleet reset and got off the line clean, and the improved starts made for some tight action on the first leg. Highlight moment was Chris Craig who sniffed a nice shift out of the right shore and led the fleet up the first leg.

Some weather window remained, best we could tell. And the fleet would do one more race, this time a W7 to really work those spring muscles out. Wind had moved back to its original West, though the shifts still ranged fro SW to NW, and the breeze began to build some more. Tough to recall exactly what lap as we were on leg 16 thru 22 of the day, but about half way thru this one Mother Nature decided our "window" was closing. First came the rain. Upwind in a heavy downpour that was bouncing off the deck like a Forrest Gump scene. Then the rain let up and the breeze started to build. A steady 15 with higher puffs. The first two boats got around the windward mark and headed downwind, when the wind shifted to the NW and decided to CRANK. We are talking a 30+ blast that took out all the boats that were in the vicinity of the top mark, in bowling pin fashion. There was a NASCAR pile up between three boats. When you go into Turn 3 nose to tail and the first car spins out, what do you do?? Well, you either spin out yourself, or hit them - or both. And that's what happened on our track as well. There were splashdowns and some crunching fiberglass, but fortunately no one was hurt. The middle of the fleet was scattered by the monster wind. The two in the front escaped and a few others kept sailing through the minefield and headed toward the finish. In the end, there were 5 boats that finished race 4. And the group limped for the dock. A great team effort to get all the boats out of the water as the wind really started to scream.

Dinner at the club Saturday night was spectacular, ably led by John Hans and his team of volunteers. We warmed by a wonderful crackling fire and shared stories of where we were when "it hit." One thing can make those sore muscles feel better at day's end - Prime Rib.

What was Fast Today - Hitting the shifts was really important - looking for the dark water as it came down the course, getting to it, and then getting on the lifted tack were the difference makers. Quick, clean tacks were also helpful in the shifty conditions. Then setting up downwind to intercept the puffs and ride them as long as possible by sailing deep.

Sunday the group arrived to find 38 degree temps and a strong breeze already starting to build. By race time it was back to big gusts that were exceeding the limit and racing was abandoned for the day. Results from the four races on Day 1 would stand:
Ted Keller - Torch/Hoover
Bill Farabaugh - Eagle Lake
Mike Keenan - Hoover
John Hans - Eagle Lake
Urs Geiger - Lake Fenton

Top Woman - Lisa Heming - Eagle Lake
Top Master - Chris Craig -Lake Fenton
Top Grand Master - B.J. Hague - Indian Lake

Big thanks top all the Eagle Lake Sailing Club volunteers, especially Brian Reedstrom and his wife Jill for running the races. Their daughter Cambrae for running the crash boat along with Amanda Hosaflook; they got a work out Saturday afternoon.

Mark your calendars for May of 2014 for the next Eagle Lake Open Regatta. It is guaranteed fun on and off the water.

Porto Ercole, Italy - Taking advantage of great weather conditions, the Race Committee in Porto Ercole issued three more races to complete the second leg of the 2013 Melges 32 Audi Sailing Series. A very special thanks to the excellent work and hospitality offered by Circolo Nautico e della Vela dell'Argentario, as with a final tally of eight races, the event celebrates the grand success of Lanfranco Cirillo on Fantastica with tactician Michele Paoletti and crew comprised of Daniele De Luca, Claudio Celon, Riamondo Tonelli, Eros Paghera, Enrico Verdinelli and Enrico Turrini as Porto Ercole Champions.

Cirillo's single-digit scoreline, including a bullet in Race One of the series can be attributed to his victory. Paoletti called an almost perfect regatta as the especially light and tricky air were, from a tactical standpoint, very challenging.

Rounding out the podium, in second overall is Edoardo Lupi aboard Torpyone with Pietro Sibello as tactician, and Andrea Pozzi's Bombarda with tactician Lorenzo Bressani finished an impressive regatta in third. Filippo Pacinotti and tactician Nathan Wilmot aboard Brontolo HH slipped to end the day in fourth overall. Edoardo Pavesio's FRA MARTINA with Chris Rast on tactics completed the top five.

It is with Pozzi's amazing finish in Porto Ercole that he proudly leads the overall Series Ranking after two events. Lupi follows in second, then Cirillo in third.

Porto Ercole was hosted by the Circolo Nautico e della Vela dell'Argentario, organized by B-Plan Sport & Events in collaboration with the International Melges 32 Class Association (IM32CA) and Melges Europe. The next events are Portoferraio (Event No. 3 on 31 May-2 June), and Torbole (Event No. 4 on 12-14 July). The final event will be the 2013 Melges 32 World Championship on 18-22 September in Porto Rotondo, Italy.

TOP TEN RESULTS (FINAL - After Eight Races)
1.) Lanfranco Cirillo/Michele Paoletti, Fantastica; 1-7-4-[9]-4-6-9-5 = 36
2.)

Porto Ercole, Italy - After an early long wait, day two of the second event at the 2013 Melges 32 Audi Sailing Series finally got underway with a late afternoon mistral. A dedicated Race Committee delivered two races when a solid 10-12 knots pumped in from the North, with wave action perpendicular to the wind direction.

Conditions did not prevent overnight leader Lanfranco Cirillo on Fantastica from holding onto first place with a five point lead. With a new afterguard that includes Nathan Wilmot as tactician and Olympian Gabrio Zandona, Filippo Pacinotti aboard Brontolo felt good, enabling him to keep his second overall position. Also holding firm in third is Spain's Marc de Antonio on Bribon-Movistar, just two points behind Pacinotti.

Edoardo Lupi's Torpyone has truly found harmony with tactician Pietro Sibello as they managed to move up the leaderboard to complete the day in fourth. Right on his heels is Edoardo Pavesio on FRA MARTINA rounding out the top five.

It was not an easy day. Andrea Pozzi's Bombarda continues to be off-again and on-again after submitting a 15-1 score for the day. Gaeta Champion Valentin Zavadnikov helming Team Synergy continued to struggle as his 7-16 dropped him out of the top ten completely. Vincenzo Onorato's Mascalzone Latino felt the effects of a better day improving their daily result with a 5-2. 2013 OtterBox® Melges 32 Virgin Islands Sailing Series Champion Roberto Tomasini Grinover on Robertissima won the first race of the day, then suffered a disappointing fourteenth in Race Five.

Event No. 2 of the Melges 32 Audi Sailing Series completes on Sunday. The Race Committee will strive for three more races, however much depends on the breeze and its punctuality.

Porto Ercole happens this weekend hosted by the Circolo Nautico e della Vela dell'Argentario, organized by B-Plan Sport & Events in collaboration with the International Melges 32 Class Association (IM32CA) and Melges Europe. The next events are Portoferraio (Event No. 3 on 31 May-2 June), and Torbole (Event No. 4 on 12-14 July). The final event will be the 2013 Melges 32 World Championship on 18-22 September in Porto Rotondo, Italy.

Porto Ercole, Italy - Opening day at the 2013 Melges 32 Audi Sailing Series commenced with three races after a morning spent remembering Olympic Medalist Andrew 'Bart' Simpson (2008 Gold in Beijing and 2012 Silver in London) who died in a tragic accident during a training session aboard AC72 Artemis Racing on San Francisco Bay on Thursday.

The Race Committee managed the best breeze that blew faintly out of the south for the big fleet of Melges 32s. Lanfranco Cirillo's Fantastica submitted a 1-7-4 scoreline to conquer the day. Separated by a three point margin, is Filippo Pacinotti's Brontolo and Marc de Antonio's Bribon-Movistar tied with 15 points each, seated second and third respectively.

Germany's Wolfgang Stolz on Opus One is fourth, while Edoardo Pavesio on FRA MARTINA is fifth despite getting a penalty in the first race of the day. Edoardo Lupi on Torpyone and Japan's Yukihiro Ishida on Yasha Samurai are tied with twenty-five points each finishing the day in sixth and seventh. Series leader Valentin Zavadnikov on Team Synergy, Deneen Demourkas on Groovederci and Carlo Alberini's Calvi Network round out the top ten rankings.

As the fleet looks ahead to day two in Porto Ercole, it is stressed that no one team can rest on their laurels as the unexpected is to be expected, especially with the a discard coming into play at the scoring of Race Six.

Racing is expected to commence tomorrow morning, Saturday, May 11 at 11.30. The forecasts look to be rather complicated as it calls for weaker breeze and more unstable air.

Eric Hood - Spring has sprung for sure and spring brought some big unstable windy conditions this year to Lake Hoover just outside Columbus, Ohio. Thirty-one MC teams made it to this annual fun event on one long, skinny lake. This lake is a couple of miles long running north and south but only a couple of hundred yards wide. Like most spots in the upper Midwest normal winds usually consist of southwest winds or southeast winds in the spring and summer but not for these two days. The unstable cool weather out to the west that dumped spring snow on a couple of the northern states was doing battle with warm air coming up from the southeast. Results for our group is that we had ESE winds on day one with a wind speed range of 15-20 knots. Day two conditions were much the same with wind speed ranging of 5-18 knots. The challenges though both days were the big shifts coming in from the east. Again, not a normal situation for this fun flat water lake.

The Courses
We had two W5s and four W7s. Starts were tight with lots of action. Probably the biggest gainer for most people was making their final upwind strategy for at least the first couple of minutes in the last 60 seconds before the start, maybe 90 seconds. If a competitor picked the wrong end, they fell behind quickly. The water was flat, as mentioned earlier.

The Learnings
As we travel from large lakes to small lakes one thing does not change when you have big shifty conditions and that is good boat handling. Boil it down even further and I would say what won this regatta and put four boats squarely up front was the ability to tack quickly, have the boat instantly on the correct angle of heel, vang on hard, then board up after the boat is level and sailing. This really is what allowed teams to fire off the line, get a boat length or two of margin to catch the first big shifts. The shifts you could see but sometimes they developed so quickly you had to really be able to react fast, survive and then still be fast. Sailing downwind, sailors had nice gains by simply paying attention to the quick bombs coming behind the boat. With legs that were only a 1/4 mile teams had to work hard coming around the top mark to keep from getting passed by a group of boats or to make a big gain yourself. The opportunities were there every race. A number of sailors talked about fighting till the end and never giving up because big gains were always possible. The other big learnings were simply being prepared for those conditions, which were not normal as I mentioned. Pre-race practice was really important to understand the challenges of the day.

The Race Winners
Race 1 – Chris Craig - Lake Fenton
Race 2- Chris Lopez - White Lake
Race 3- Ted Keller - Torch/Hoover
Race 4- Bob Cole – Keuka
Race 5 – Bob Cole – Keuka
Race 6 – Ted Keller – Torch/Hoover

Final Results
The final results can be found on the MC Facebook Page and the MC Website but here are the basics. 1st Ted Keller, 2nd Chris Lopez (Top Junior), 3rd Eric Hood (Top Master), 4th Pete Comfort, 5th Bob Cole (Top Grand Master), 6th Casey Christensen, 7th Jake Erdman, 8th Chris Craig, 9th Clark Wade, 10th Chris Hawk.

Regatta Champ Ted Keller was solid throughout the event and even found himself at a gate split like he had with Kenny Wolf down at the Midwinters. Fortunately, Ted got back on Pete Comfort pretty quick not risking disaster like the Midwinters. Ted will be a contender for the title this summer in Iowa. Ted also had the opportunity to sail with his daughter Casey and it was her first time racing with Ted in a MC Regatta. Always excited seeing young sailors coming on board in our class. Speaking of Youth or as we all cheered at the awards ceremonies "Yout" we saw Chris Lopez from White Lake really sail well this week and he enjoyed the rough and tumble conditions the spring weather brought.

Other News
The National Championship is just 6-7 weeks away at Clear Lake, Iowa. Word on the street is the Texans are coming to take away all the hardware. Seriously, we have some really strong teams coming and this will prove to be one of if not the toughest Championship of the year. Please, please help the regatta organizers by signing up today if you know you are coming. Word from downtown Zenda is that boats are still available but you need to call now before it is too late. Also, it seems like a big year for Iowa as we have the ILYA Championships there too. Lots of great spring and summer regattas but let's make sure we support the majors like the Nationals, ILYA, WMYA and those three great venues this year. Next available hull number is 2592.

Last but not least please make sure you sign up now for the Masters Championship being held here at Hoover. One thing we know in a 3 day series you will have some nice summer weather. This weekend was really an unusual weather system and not the norm for this fun sailing lake. I know Richard Blake, Jay Huling and a large cast of others from this club will roll out the red carpet for you this summer for the Masters Nationals Championship.
