Article courtesy of Coye Harrett - The final day of the 2009 MC Invitational brought another early start time of 9AM in hopes of getting a race off before the weather systems would roll in before early afternoon. With a six point separation between the top five boats, having a good race was going to be crucial. At the time of the start the wind was out of the South East around 5-6 MPH. Once again the port angle off the starting line was the favored board. With the wind being lighter with some holes, it was very important to stay in the pressure and keep the boat moving. Whoever worked the middle left side of the course was going to come out on top, and that's exactly what Steve Everest was able to do; win the last race and seal his 2009 MC Invitational title.

A big thanks is in order for the Clear Lake Yacht Club and their members who put on a great regatta. They also provided housing for nearly every sailor along with a pier for overnight boat mooring. Clear Lake is a must attend venue!

Race report as published by NESCA's Digital Reaches - Augie Barkow continues to lead the 39 boats around the course. He has a 21 point lead on a group of five competitors separated by just 3 points. Today the winds were 7-14 for the morning's race and approaching 20 in the second race, but the puffs were much stronger with 20-30 degree shifts.

The race course was a real challenge because Russ Ackley, the PRO, wanted to get enough distance on the course and that put the weather mark tight on the shore. The wind was as fickle as can be and there were major shake ups at the weather mark. Example - in the second race Jim Gluek went from 3 to 9 in the last 200 feet to the second mark, and he had lots of company in with results like this to get around the mark.

The leeward gate was exciting for spectators with sail handling catastrophes and tip overs as the strong sharp puffs would come at exactly the wrong time for many boats.

Tom Burton at a pair of 4th places to match the pair he had on day one. He is consistent - but we all know that. However, in the second race his team decided at do a gybe set and changed the spinnaker lines before getting to the mark. On the set it filled but looked funny and they thought it was tangled so they gybed and it filled again. He was quite animated and had a few choice words when the spinnaker went up sideways.

In the first race it Tom Sweitzer leading at the first mark with Will Graves, Jule Hannaford, and Jim Gleuk following. By the next upwind Augie moved into first place, after being sixth at the first mark. Vincent Porter was OCS, but he worked his way back by the second downwind leg to 14th place and got another boat upwind - just enough to hang on to a tie for second place in the regatta after the day was done. Augie had a good lead at the finish followed by Will Graves, Jim Gluek, Tom Burton (who steadily moved up from 8th to 4th during the race), Tom Sweitzer, and Jule.

In the second race Will Graves lead at the first mark followed by Augie, Gluek, and Jule Hannaford. The leaders stretched it out quickly as there was a huge pile up at the weather mark - fickle wind related

The second downwind saw a big left shift and many boats had over stood the leeward gate - which added to the excitement for spectators and the racers. Will Graves dropped back and Jule moved up. PJ Friend made out big moving up 10 places to 4th.

The leaders were alone battling it out on the last downwind. Jule and Augie each rounded at the same time but at opposite gate marks. Jule was able to get on top of Augie and cover him for the win.

TOP TEN RESULTS:
1 V37 August Barkow
2 I49 Vincent Porter
3 V74 Will Graves
4 V9 Tom Sweitzer
5 X751 Jim Gluek
6 M7 Jule Hannaford
7 V11 Peter Friend
8 V102 Bob Guidinger
9 V300 Bill Burns
10 H13 Patrick Heaney

Article courtesy of Coye Harrett - Day two of the MC Invitational Regatta brought steady breeze for the 9AM start time. The wind today was out of the North with oscillation between North-Northwest. At the start of the first race it seemed like deja vu of yesterday with the port lifts. Mark Dunsworth played the shifts to a first place, followed by Markham Chatterton and Kevin Neal. As the fleet was sailing back to the starting area for the second race the breeze started to kick in like it's usual fashion.

For the second race of the day, third of the regatta, Dan Fink worked his way around the race course with the advantage of only one person on board for the downwind legs. Towards the end of the race the wind began to taper off, allowing the boats with only one to make some ground on those who took crews. At the finish it was Dan Fink followed by Kevin Neal then Steve Everest.

After a nice leisurely lunch break the fleet headed back out for breeze still out of the North but had slightly faded over lunch. There still was enough wind to sail though. The port angle seems to be a common theme of this regatta as there were massive lifts to the mark and virtually un-sailable starboard angles. Dan Fink was on his "A" game today as he won the third race of the day. Followed by Clear Lake locals, Eric Protzman and Todd Tesar. The Race Committee tried to pull off a fourth race of the day but the wind would not cooperate as they called the race off at the first windward mark as the breeze went flat.

Race report as published by NCESA's Digital Reaches - It is early Saturday morning and most everyone is still asleep here in Pewaukee. Too much fun yesterday to get on the computer to get out a report - sorry about that. We had two great back-2-back races afterlunch. The wind finally filled in down the length of Pewuakee for a 1:50 pm start (a 220 degree course was set). Many boats used their fourth crew and all teamswere hiking hard all afternoon. Augie Barkow was strongoff the line working the left pointand nailed a nice port tack slant up the middle of the course. He leadat every pinto finish first with a nice lead. Following Augie at the first mark were Bill Allen, Bill Burns, Lon Schoor, Bob Guidinger, and Eric Wilson. It was typical Pewuakee with some good shifts on a nice long 3+ course. That gave some good boats an opportunity to catch up after a slow start. Boats on the move up were Rick Roy, Vicent Porter and Tom Burton - They finished second thru fourth. Lon hung on to second at most all the marks but missed a big left shift on the last leg to finish 5th.

The secondrace startedwith a general recall because of a wind shift to the rightduring the sequence. The wind picked up too and boats scrambled to pick up a fourth crew. They changed the course from 210 to 240 and got astart off with about 5 eager boats being called back.Augie was off the line well again but it was Tom Sweitzer's turn to lead the way around all the marks to finish first. Augie was second followed by Art Brereton, Tom Burton, and Jule Hannaford. There was a little inversion of the middle of the fleet at the first mark - those ahead that stayed on starboardgot hung out to dry as those behind that gybed caught a nice port slant down the lake. That was the only big shake up in the postions during the race. At the finish Tom Switzer held off Augie Barkow. They were followed by Art Brereton, Tom Burton, Jule Hannaford, Jeff Solum, Will Graves. Burton lost a protest to erase a good effort.

The official results are unknown after two races but the first six might go like this: Augie Barkow, Tom Sweitzer, Vincent Porter, Lon Schoor, Jim Gleuk, Art Brereton.

The first of two days of competition for the fourth Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series event has concluded and, thus far has produced a carbon copy of the previous season's events.

Taking charge once more, the undefeated Benedetto Giallongo on his Value Team Melges 20 with Henry Fonda calling tactics, refused to cede an inch to his opponents in any of the races.

It has become commonplace to see the Giallongo out front, but the position has not been an easy one to maintain. His closest competition is Stefano di Properizio on Mataran. Di Properizio is a regular on the Melges 32 roster of competitors who is now trying his hand in the new Melges 20 fleet as well. With him is Gabrio Zandona on tactics. Together they dueled side-by-side with Giallongo, yet were only able to achieve second position overall (with two second place finishes and a sixth). In third is Renato Vallivero on Turnover with a 6-3-4 scoreline.

Claudio Recchi's tough Team 93 with Filippo Pacinotti at the helm placing his signature on the third race of the day, rescuing them from an earlier 7-9 result. He is currently fifth overall, behind Giuseppe Cavalli's Levitano.

Sunday's races will bring Giallongo's reply for pole position in the Cagliari competition, which ultimately could provide him with a fourth victory, four-consecutive stages of the Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series 2009. Provisional results are as follows after three races.

Article courtesy of Coye Harrett - The overnight thunderstorms brought the sailors good breeze from the East South East between 10-15 MPH. Many skippers were quick to grab their crews as they headed out to the starting line. After the start, it was clear that the left side of the course was the place to be as there were huge port lifts. The fleet was divided by this wind line, boats on the right side of the course struggled as there wasn't any pressure. Clear Lake Native, Jeff Nicholas was leading the fleet around the first mark. The wind started to fade for the downwind leg and fellow local, Mark Tesar took the lead around the leeward mark and headed back to the left side of the course for the favored port angle. Virtually every boat went around the starboard gate and played follow the leader out to the left side of the course. At the second windward mark there was yet again another lead change, Dan Fink was leading the fleet back down the lake. For this leg, the breeze had been around 5-10 MPH and the boats with crews onboard were struggling. Around the last gate, Fink went to the port gate and tried to get across the centerline of the course but could not find any pressure or angle to get him there. Many boats went to the port gate and found the same trouble of not getting any angle or pressure to come back to the center of the course. At the top third of the last upwind some pressure filled in from the left corner that allowed the boats on the left to make gains as the boats out on starboard still could not make it back to the center of the course. At the finish Steve Everest came out on top, followed by Kevin Neal, then Mark Dunsworth. Very tricky racing...

After this first race the breeze completely shut off and the fleet went in for lunch hoping for the breeze to freshen and fill.

After lunch brought minimal wind, but enough for the race committee to put the fleet in sequence. At the three minute mark, there was a major wind shift that resulted in a postponement and eventual abandonment as again the breeze shut off for the day.

Overall Results: (after one race)
1) Steve Everest
2) Kevin Neal
3) Mark Dunsworth

Stay tuned for the Day 2 Report....

The Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series 2009 takes place in Cagliari, Italy this weekend. It is the fourth event of the five part series.

Leading the race with three consecutive wins in the Audi Sailing Series is Benedetto Giallongo on Value Team. By mathematics, Giallongo already has won the title of Audi's Sailing Series 2009 champion, because he has won the three previous regattas.

In the last event in Malcesine, Giallongo threatened to stop the work of Luca Domenici onMefistoby only one point in a daring sprint to the finish line in the final race. All teams are now more than ready to defeat Benedetto's plans of taking the series title.
