It's been far too long! Months, in fact. I won't make any excuses for my extended absence, but I will let you know what I've been doing instead:

I am still traveling to Sydney for a few days each week for my work. The travel has cut down my free time a bit, but it has also given me a weekly opportunity to feel justified in watching The Vampire Diaries. You win some, you lose some. While working I have written about my rainbow hair and marriage equality (yep, at the same time), how I think both rape and racism are inexcusable (this, kind of surprisingly, didn't go down well), Femen's "topless jihad day", and the sexism that appears to be inherent in O-Week at Australian universities.

I have been volunteering as a media coordinator with a new youth-run, Canberra-based reproductive and women's rights organisation called Vocal Majority. We recently pulled together a conference that included speakers such as Anne Summers, Professor Hilary Charlesworth, Anna Rose, Clementine Ford and Stella Young! You can read about that conference here, here and here. If you want to make it look like I'm really good at my job, you should think about liking Vocal Majority on Facebook, or following the organisation on Twitter.

I'm also volunteering with the Human Rights Arts and Film Festival, which will be coming to Canberra at the beginning of June - the program looks rad.

I've written a few other things around the place, too. Mostly reviews, for films such as Danny Boyle's Trance, the astonishingly bad Hyde Park on Hudson, Jack the Giant Slayer with cute kid Nicholas Hoult, the fab Warm Bodies also with cute kid Nicholas Hoult, and Oz the Great and Powerful. I also have an article about feminism, fairytales and film in the latest print issue of Lip magazine (issue 23), which you can buy here.

Oh, and I'm supposed to be doing my Masters degree! But I kind of keep forgetting about that. Oops. JSYK, if I'm ever away from the blog again for so long you can keep up with what I'm writing on twitter, and all the exciting things I do (read: all the cups of coffee I consume) on Intstagram. Oh, and I'm still posting things to Tumblr!

But enough about me! Let's talk links! And, as always, a cappella covers!

This week in the news, retired journalist Geoffrey Barker wrote this piece of sexist crap, where he criticises commercial broadcast news. Or rather, couches his criticism of commercial broadcast news in outrageous sexism and about 400 words arguing that pretty women don't deserve to be on television. Here's a response from Mamamia editor Jamila Rizvi. Here's some more sense, and a little more.

Oh, and hey - today is World Press Freedom Day. Disappointing, Ms Westwood. Especially in the context of talking about the fact that Michelle Obama 'recycles' her clothes. That is - shock! horror! - she has been photographed wearing the same outfit more than once. I suppose I am linking to this, because I feel like this is exactly the sort of unnecessary comment women tend to make about other women, because... I don't know. Because putting down other women has become an ingrained part of our cultural psyche. Because to criticise other women - whether they be celebrities or a stranger on the street - for something as nothing as the clothes they wear, is normal. And that just makes me very sad.

As an antidote to that sadness: how to be a successful optimist.

Why are romantic comedies so bad?

8 crazy things (almost) every 20-something is guilty of.

Look at...

Photos of baby animals inside the womb. Bone weary. Like I just want to nap, just for five minutes, you know?

The most irritating thing is that my weariness is not due to any one commitment I have taken on - nor even the total number of my commitments! It's just that I have a tendency to want to do everything. I want to see all my friends, every week. I want to go to every art show and every gig, and see every film (and sometimes films can be pretty draining - and long! Like Cloud Atlas!).

But something needs to change. I think March will be my month of realising I can't do everything.

More importantly, I don't want to do everything. I want to make sure I have enough mental and emotional energy to really commit myself to doing a good job at my various jobs - I don't want to feel half-awake and half-competent. I hate feeling only half-competent at things!

So I'm going to slow down. I'm going to do less. I'm going to remember to eat three square meals a day, and take the time to paint my nails. Do you have any resolutions for March?

PS. Don't worry, I'm still going to find fabulous things on the internet, to share here... ;)

Read...

Children are self-harming in Australian detention centres. I love how fun and upbeat it is, and the fact that it makes me dance around my bedroom. I love that it’s a little sexy. I love that it’s a little lovely.

I like that it’s about being really attracted to and wanting to sleep with someone – but also a song about how that doesn’t diminish or objectify the, well, object of your affections. I like that it’s a song about loving someone – but also (I feel) a song about spontaneity and lust existing within a very comfortable relationship. Two sides of the same coin.

Or am I just rambling, and reading too much into pop songs?

Anyway, what I may not have mentioned on this blog before, is how much I love the film clip for Closer. It basically exemplifies that feeling of going to a house party, and drinking to just the right side of too much, and literally and metaphorically dancing around someone you’re interested in all night long. Also, it features karaoke, so I was sucked in from the beginning.

But I discovered the other day that there is a ‘lyric video’ for the song as well, which I also love! They get married quickly, and are convinced that they can make it work – but friends, family, and even the priest at their wedding are not so sure. As their one year anniversary approaches, and new temptations appear – in the form of Josh’s ex girlfriend Chloe (Anna Faris), and Nat’s handsome client Guy (Simon Baker) – they begin to wonder if everybody else might not have been right.

Based on widely-accepted old wive's tale / truth, that “the first year of marriage is the hardest”, I Give It A Year is similar to a few other offbeat, wannabe-edgy rom-coms to be released in recent years, like Bachelorette. It has salty humour, abrasiveness and audaciousness, in a genre template. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. Rom-coms are mostly always enjoyable (unless they’re What Happens in Vegas), and I Give It A Year is more interesting and more enjoyable than most. With a solid supporting cast including the hilarious Anna Faris, the ruggedly good-looking Simon Baker (I’m not the only one who finds him outrageously attractive for no discernable reason, right?), and a return to the screen for Minnie Driver, I Give It A Year is worth giving a watch.

And guess what? I've decided that my resolution is to try and read 52 books this year, and so far I've finished The Casual Vacancy by J. K. Rowling, The Marmalade Files by Steve Lewis and Chris Uhlmann, and The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. Around reading books, I also spent an entire evening discussing sci-fi television with friends and watched the weirdest film I have ever seen; was able to enjoy a little bit of the festivities in Darling Harbour for the Sydney Festival; had a burrito and foreign film night with friends - the best; celebrated my mother's birthday (happy birthday, Mum!); and managed to catch up with a whole cast of friends who I haven't seen since late last year! To be honest, I've mostly been hiding in cinemas / other cool, darkened rooms, avoiding the heat. I'm wild.

What about you?

Read...

When sometimes you need to say 'no' instead of 'yes'. From Sarah Von, of Yes and Yes fame.

10 things you should never say to women in their 20s. Luckily I don't get any of these. Mine are more like, "Seriously, can't you cook anything? How do you even live?"

Clementine Ford writes about the 'Nice Guys of OK Cupid' phenomenon. And in the interests of providing a different perspective, not all guys who use the term 'friend zone' are bad people. Except, let's be honest - anybody who uses the term 'friend zone' is implicitly suggesting that they have been mistreated in some manner, because they provided friendship to a woman, and didn't get sex in return. Which suggests that they have duplicitous motives, and have been using friendship for purpose of getting a woman to sleep with them, rather than caring about a woman platonically at all. Which suggests that they are a douche.

And in news that comes as a surprise to no-one, good-looking men get a better deal than everybody else. However, a friend pointed out that handsomeness could be correlated with other things that help you succeed - rather than causing the success... To which I reply that, as the study shows that handsome men are also more likely to be married, perhaps the old adage "behind every successful man..." explains it. BAM.

Zooey Deschanel calls herself a feminist! Hooray! Thank goodness not all celebrities (I'm looking at you, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga) are interested in distancing themselves from the word, basically because they don't understand what it means.

The 10 television shows you'll be watching soon. Downtown Abbey! Shameless! Girls! Game of Thrones! Smash! Community!

Men in skirts - can you dig it?

Image.

Look at...

The Pantone colour of the year for 2013... Emerald!

Obama's year in pictures. I particularly like the looks of these Peach Pie Popsicles.

Image.

♥ Take a cool bath. I certainly am. If the year thus far is anything to go by, it's going to be a blast. I went to Melbourne over New Year's, and got up to many hijinks. I visited a restaurant inside a retrofitted church; I shopped til I dropped (literally. I pretty much fell to the ground); made alcoholic spiders (sorbet and sprite and vodka); welcomed in the New Year in a park with some of my closest friends, watching fireworks; woke up hungover on New Year's Day and rolled into a rooftop hottub with a view of the Melbourne skyline (seriously); visited the Melbourne Museum, and marvelled over the dinosaur bones and taxidermy animals; ate way too much Mexican; met up with some old friends over drinks at Madame Brussels, and drank delicious jugs of cocktails; visited the Rooftop Cinema and saw Heathers (one of my favourite films) and ate perhaps the best burgers in the world; spent a day at St. Kilda beach (none of us got sunburnt!) and a night at Luna Park (the lights were epic!); ate at Lentil As Anything, where you pay what you think the meal was worth (I thought it was worth more money than I had); and - if you will forgive me for this cliche - much, much more!

How did you welcome in the New Year?

And now, for something completely different...

Read...

Lena Dunham's 12 things I learned in 2012. Oh boy, have I experienced this. It's the downside to always telling people how much you love and/or hate them, and sometimes writing about your personal life. However, I think vulnerability not a sign of weakness; but a sign of courage! Let's all make it our 2013 resolution to have vulnerability hangovers all the time! Who's with me?! ... Anyone?

25 ways to make your life better immediately. To get hung up thinking about the people who treated me badly, or were unfaithful to me, or shook my self-confidence and sense of self-worth. It’s so easy, to worry about feeling very young, while also feeling like I’m getting old too fast and not accomplishing everything that I want to. To worry that I’m too interested in too many things. To know that I absolutely don’t know where I’m supposed to go next.

But I don’t want to write about those things. I’d rather focus on the fact that this year I left my comfortable full-time job, to try and figure out what I ‘really wanted to do with my life’. (Wanker.) I went back to university to start a Masters degree; did internships with a number of amazing organisations, where I met friendly, passionate and inspiring people; and wrote, and wrote, and wrote. I actually got paidfor my writing this year. On more than one occasion.

I threw myself into experiencing as much arts and culture as I possibly could – I read books, and went to the theatre, and saw films, and didn’t think twice about traveling interstate for the sole purpose of visiting a particular exhibition at an art gallery. I worked in a cute, independent bookshop (childhood dream fulfilled, natch!), and got to listen to many, many emerging Canberra bands put on amazing shows. I did what I wanted to do: I dyed my hair (sorry, Dad!), and I got a tattoo (sorry, Grandma! (but seriously, nobody tell my grandma, she still doesn’t know)).

I (like to think I) was a good friend, and was reminded again just how amazing my closest friends are in return. Truly, my friends are some of the strongest, cleverest, compassionate (and regular ol’ passionate!) people I have ever met. I treated other people well, I’m confident of that. I became better at worrying less about what mostly unimportant people think of me, and avoiding negativity. I became a little tougher, and more uncompromising about how I know I deserve to be treated.

My life isn’t sorted now – and it might seem like I’ve taken a few steps backwards. But I feel like I have had an exceptional year. And I’m pretty sure that the year to come is going to be exceptional, too. And probably a few years after that. I know that I will continue to approach challenges with enthusiasm, and setbacks with optimism, and everything else I do with passion. Being assured of that feels like enough. As a movie starring Christina Aguilera and Cher told me, you can’t keep a good girl down. (There was also a message in there about stripping for your supper, but I’m going to ignore that portion of the film.)

I’m perhaps only a little closer to knowing what I ‘really want to do with my life’. But as a wise man (and my childhood crush) once said: “I don’t know where I’m going. But I promise it won’t be boring.”

melicious morsels 29.12.12

This show. Yes.

This is the final Morsels post for this year... and what a year it has been! The last few weeks of 2012 have been filled with lots of exciting opportunities and new beginnings, and I just hope that this is a sign of what's to come next year! Last weekend I went driving with a group of friends to look at the most obscene Christmas lights in Canberra; I had Christmas brunch with some of my very lovely friends, who gave me very lovely presents (I teared up a little. Or a lot. I'm a sap); I caught up with a friend over brunch in Manuka, and had a delicious vegetarian breakfast burrito; I spent Christmas with my family, and realised that dorkiness must be hereditary; I managed to fit in seeing the first installment of The Hobbit (could've done with a little less slo-mo "Nooo"-ing, Peter Jackson), and Les Mis (which I actually really enjoyed! Except for Russell Crowe, obviously); saw Whit Stillman's Damsels in Distress at the National Film and Sound Archive, and then spent the afternoon hanging out in the park with my friends and staring that the darkening sky; and met up with some of my extended family in Robertson, a town which is "the home of The Big Potato." It didn't look like a potato at all. It looked like a big rock. I loved it.

Tomorrow I'm heading off to Melbourne to spend New Year's with some of my favourite people - but I'll be back soon after! Until then, here are a few links to remember me by...

Read...

If you really knew me, you'd know... I completely agree with this article - that's the best 'getting to know you' question around. For example: if you really knew me you'd know that I'm stupidly stubborn, I don't like hugs, I knocked out (a fair few of) my teeth bike-riding when I was eight, and I always try to think the best of people.

If I dated Justin Timberlake...

What your favourite Wes Anderson film says about you. Oh dear. My favourite is The Life Aquatic, and I have often thought that if I ever find myself having accidentally procreated, then I will name my child after the last name of a classic author. Maybe Orwell.

I still haven't packed for my trip to Melbourne - and maybe you're going away and are just as slack as I am? If so, here are some brilliant packing tips.

5 reasons I hate the beach. I relate to this so much. Except the main reason I don't like the beach / swimming, is because I get really cold. (While I'm revealing embarrassing things about myself, this seems like a good time to say that don't drink softdrink because it's "too fizzy" and the bubbles "hurt my throat.")

The Last Unicorn.

Watch...

An animated movie to Tim Minchin's "beat poem" Storm. I cannot wait for Season 2 of this show.

Listen to...

This completely amazing Ignition vs. Call Me Maybe mash-up.

And if you're still in the mash-up mood, here are some other musical pastiches to treat your ears to.

Alternatively, if you're like me and listening to Ignition makes you want to go and listen to Joseph Gordon-Levitt's cover of Ignition, then here you go. Which then led me to listen to JGL singing Twist and Shout (the banter on each side of the song is very funny, too).

And here is the perfect song for New Year's, such by JGL and Zooey Deschanel!

Beyond 'Gangnam': a dozen other silly dance tracks from 2012.

The Great Gatsby.

Have a completely delightful New Year's Eve, dear readers! I had such a lovely day with my family, and still managed to fit in some napping. We had waffles for breakfast, played an intense game of Monopoly (for a communist, I kicked their capitalist butts!) watched classic Christmas films The Shop Around The Corner (1940) and Christmas in Connecticut (1945), engaged in some competitive pudding eating, and had a Christmas Dance Party (pretty much like a regular dance party, except it takes place on Christmas Day) to Plan B. Oh, and we ate a lot.

Another highlight was playing charades:

Dad: [mimes shooting with a machine gun, then holds hands above head in peace/victory symbol]
Me : [excitedly] Nixon!
[crickets]
Me: Because, you know, Nixon continued America's involvement in the Vietnam War. And he's famous for making that "victory" sign after resigning from public office.
Mum: Okay, sure, but Melissa... that was clearly supposed to be War and Peace.
I'm pretty bad at charades.

What I love about Christmas Day is how much people get into the Christmas spirit - it's basically the only time of year I'm not the only one making an ass of myself as I gush over sparkly fairy lights and tinfoil / tinsel. And my friends certainly delivered with the Christmas cheer. Some of my favourite seasonal greetings I received yesterday are below...

I sent...

A very Merry Gosmas to all! xx

And received in return...

And a merry gor-levittmas to you! from Isabelle. I trust you'll forgive me that these morsels have been delivered so late? I had a completely hectic week, with many ups and downs - it was something of an emotional roller-coaster! It included: attending a friend's fabulous Christmas dinner party and engaging in completely gluttonous behaviour; attending another friend's birthday picnic party, and writing alternative and weird "Sexiest Man of the Year" lists (Peter Dinklage, take a bow); traveling to my internship and getting one of the loveliest Christmas cards I have ever received from Alicia (you're a star, girl!); getting my hair died pink again, with purple and orange streaks; going to another friend's birthday dinner and sharing delicious Moroccan cuisine; becoming briefly unemployed (boo!); sharing a bottle of wine with a friend at Essen, and discussing feminism; making new friends (I'm a sucker for that shit); reconnecting with old friends, with no small amount of emotional turmoil; slogging my way through an essay on Alan Jones ("In conclusion, fuck Alan Jones" was my central argument); becoming un-unemployed and getting a short-term job that I am so-excited-to-start-and-it's-kind-of-amazing-and-in-the-media-and-I-am-really-really-psyched! And then I drank a lot of wine last night, because I thought I deserved it.

Also, a HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my good friend Zoya. She's a lady like no other.

Read...

Daily Life's most popular articles this year.
