The Canon EOS 5D Mark II, the successor to the very popular full-frame 5D, was a long time coming, arriving on the scene about three years after its predecessor, the first (relatively) affordable full-frame DSLR, the 5D.

This second iteration brings the EOS line up to date using the 5D as its base, adding new and enhanced features, a little trickle down from the 1Ds Mark III and a couple of additions borrowed from the 50D. A great mixture of features, technology and performance, the 5D Mark II has already made its mark on the photo community.

FEATURES OVERVIEWIn addition to a new 21 megapixel CMOS sensor (similar to the one used in the 1Ds Mark III), the 5D Mark II is equipped with a high resolution 3-inch LCD, a new viewfinder, a DIGIC IV processor, increased ISO to 25,600, and HD video capabilities for recording up to 12 minutes of HD at a clip.

The camera is equipped with an updated version Canon's integrated cleaning system, featuring a Fluorine coating on the low pass filter to help repel dust. The cleaning system can also be activated manually via the camera's menu.

Other notable features include Peripheral Illumination correction, which helps correct vignetting (the camera can store the data of up to 40 Canon lenses), Highlight Tone Priority and interchangeable focusing screens.

The list of additions and improvements is long and impressive but to get a better feel for what the camera does and how it performs, read on.

BUILD AND DESIGNPhysically, the 5D Mark II is pretty much a clone of its predecessor in terms of design, weight and size. Control layout is almost exactly the same, both weigh about 1.8 pounds (body only without battery) and the 5D Mark II measures only a fraction of an inch larger. The biggest external difference is the larger, higher resolution LCD-a 3.0 inch monitor (vs. the 5D's 2.75 inch LCD) with about four times the resolution of its predecessor and a wider viewing angle. A new viewfinder, which offers 98% coverage, is also a welcome addition.

Other changes include two more Custom settings options on the mode dial, bringing the total to three custom modes, and the addition of a Creative Auto mode-a feature borrowed from the 50D. The CA mode is, essentially, designed for novice DSLR users or, according to Canon, experienced photographers who want a quick and easy method of adjusting certain settings. Mostly, though, it's for people who don't fully understand manual exposure or the relationship between aperture and depth-of-field. One of the CA options, for example, moving a slider bar to "blur the background" (i.e. limit depth-of-field). It's one of those take it or leave it features that most experienced photographers will probably ignore.

Upon close inspection you'll also notice the addition of an IrPort remote sensor so you can use one of Canon's optional remotes. And, of course, since the 5D Mark II is capable of recording HD video, there are connections for an external microphone and for HDMI output.

While the 5D Mark II doesn't have a built-in flash, one of Canon's Speedlites will fit neatly into the camera's hotshoe. And if you're a macro fanatic, be sure to check out Canon's Macro Ring Lite or Macro Twin Lite flashes. Of course, the full complement of Canon's EF Lenses is available for the camera as well.

You'll need a high speed, high capacity CompactFlash card to make the most of this camera and since the 5D Mark II supports UDMA CF cards for higher capacity burst capture (as well as standard CF type 1 and II cards), I tested the camera with a 16GB Lexar UDMA card and a SanDisk 16GB Extreme IV card. Both cards performed well and having the higher capacity was extremely useful since the 5D Mark II's files are about twice as large as the 5D's. For video, keep in mind that about 12 minutes of HD video requires about 4GB of space.

A new battery pack provides between 750-850 shots per charge but that's not the only benefit of the new battery. You can also track several of the battery's data points including the remaining number of shots. A new battery grip is also available and the camera is compatible with Canon's WFT-E4A Wireless File Transmitter so you can transfer images in a number of different ways including wirelessly and directly to USB drives.

Build quality is excellent and, best of all, the 5D Mark II-like the 5D-opens up the world of full-frame DSLRs to those of with smaller hands, less than Hulk Hogan upper body strength and modest bank accounts, and offers the opportunity to shoot comfortably with a full-frame camera. Of course, you can always outsize your strength by coupling the 5D Mark II with a huge telephoto lens but that's where a sturdy tripod comes into play. Bottom line: the 5D Mark II is solidly built, has enough heft to counterbalance long lenses and is equipped with a well-designed grip for stable handholds.

Ergonomics and ControlsSince the 5D Mark II's controls are almost a carbon copy of the 5D, 5D users won't miss a beat when upgrading, although there is a slight learning curve for using Live View and shooting video on the new model. Other Canon DSLR users will also have an easy time transitioning to the 5D Mark II since controls are very similar.

As I mentioned earlier, one of the benefits of the 5D Mark II's modest physical design is that it's easy for those of us with smaller hands to use. There is one exception, however. Because the power on/off switch is at the bottom right on the rear panel of the camera, it's sometimes a little awkward to turn the camera on and off without shifting the right hand off the grip. It's not a big deal; it's just something one has to navigate a little differently than other cameras with more easily accessible power on/off switches.

Menus and ModesCanon has kept the 5D Mark II's menu system fairly uncluttered, with the full complement of options under each tab visible on a single screen. Granted, there are more tabs to cycle through but at least you don't have to scroll through more than one virtual "page" of a menu to get to the setting you want.
There are nine tabs but even those unfamiliar with Canon's menu system can quickly figure out what each tab icon means. The first two-a camera icon on a red background-are capture settings; the two blue icons with white arrows are for playback settings, etc.

Shooting information is available everywhere including the viewfinder, top panel LCD and rear panel monitor. With the rear LCD's info panel, you can easily change all of the most important options ranging from f/stop (which is also adjustable with the main control dial), ISO, file size/resolution and more.

The exposure mode dial, located on the left top surface of the camera offers a number of different options:

Custom settings: C1, C2, C3 allows users to register three different custom modes with most often used or special settings
B(ulb): holds the shutter open for as long as the shutter button is depressed in the 5D Mark II
Manual: you set both the shutter-speed and aperture
AV: you select the aperture and the camera selects the shutter-speed
TV: you select the shutter-speed and the camera selects the aperture
Program: the camera sets the shutter-speed and aperture but some manual settings are available
Creative Auto: provides a simple graphic interface to adjust aperture and exposure compensation
Auto: the camera selects all but a few settings

Although it's unlikely the 5D Mark II will attract photographers who will make use of the Auto and Creative Auto modes, Canon didn't penalize exposure options by including them. Rather, an extra two Custom modes, bringing the total to three, is a welcome change and will be well-utilized by many photographers.

Display/ViewfinderThe new, larger and higher resolution LCD is a very welcome addition to the 5D Mark II. Even though the 3.0 inch LCD is larger than the 5D's 2.75 inch monitor, there's only a barely-noticeable shift of control positions and fractions of an inch increase in body size.

At 920,000 dots, the screen offers great resolution and can now be viewed at a wide 170 degrees. The 5D Mark II offers 7 levels of brightness adjustment, as well as auto, and while using the LCD is a pleasure under all lighting conditions, it's easy to be fooled into thinking that your exposure is right on if the LCD brightness isn't at the right level so be sure to use the histogram and highlight alert features.
The manual LCD brightness option came in handy when shooting in Live View, though. While the LCD delivered fluid movement in Live View, the image on the screen was a little dark but was easily brightened by a quick trip to the internal menu system.

While the optical viewfinder offers about 98% coverage-up from the 5D's 96%--I'd still like to see 100% coverage. After shooting with the Sony A-900, it's hard to go back to any other optical viewfinder. Still, the 5D Mark II's optical viewfinder is quite good. Optional focusing screens are also available.

PERFORMANCEThanks to the implementation of Canon's new DIGIC IV processor, the 5D Mark II has made some gains over the 5D. Burst mode is now at about 3.8 frames per second, versus the 5D's 3fps, and won't win the 5D Mark II any awards but given that the new model is pushing almost twice as many pixels, it's a pretty good improvement. (Sony's A900 is even more impressive but uses dual processors to push the pixels from its 24 megapixel sensor.).

A larger buffer allows the camera to shoot up to about 13 consecutive RAW files (you can add a few more when using a UDMA card). Use sRAW1 or 2, which are smaller-sized RAW files (10 megapixels and 5.2 megapixels, respectively), new for the 5D Mark II, to pick up some speed and extra shots.

Shutter lag and autofocus times are good, although I found that the 5D Mark II occasionally had to hunt for focus in very low light. I have used the 5D Mark II to shoot fashion shows but probably wouldn't take it to an air show, sporting event or car race since the autofocus and burst rate may not be up to the challenge. But wedding photographers and photojournalists will be more than happy with its performance.

Note: Continuous shooting framerates are based on the camera's fastest full-resolution JPEG continuous shooting mode, using the fastest media type available (300x CF, SDHC, etc.), as tested in our studio. "Frames" notes the number of captures recorded per burst before the camera stops/slows to clear the buffer.

Unlike most DSLRs equipped with Live View, Canon has equipped the 5D Mark II's Live View with three autofocus modes: Quick, Live and Face Detection Live. In the Quick mode, the mirror drops down so that phase detection autofocus can be used. Live and Face Detection Live use contrast detection autofocus because the mirror is kept up and out of the way. Contrast detection is a slower mode of autofocus than phase detection but is certainly usable. Be sure to test the Live AF mode in video before shooting footage; depending on the subject matter and the lens used, you may want to manually focus instead since it's more accurate (and quieter).

IMAGE QUALITYAs expected, the 5D Mark II produces great images-even on its default settings. If you don't like the image, simple adjustments to one or more of the camera's many options will do the trick.

It was no surprise that auto white balance produced a very warm image under incandescent lighting. Expect this from all Canon cameras and don't depend on auto white balance indoors (AWB does work well outdoors in sunlight, however).

Colors are accurately and naturally rendered and, for the most part, exposures are spot on. Dynamic range is quite good as well but when faced with high contrast situations, try turning on the Auto Lighting Optimizer to maintain details in highlights. It doesn't work miracles and, in some cases, you may not be able to detect a huge difference, but it's worth using.

With an expanded light sensitivity range from 50-25,600, the 5D Mark II does an excellent job of keeping noise levels (and noise reduction softening) to a minimum.

Although you can see a slight softening of the image above ISO 1600 (be sure to dial down the noise reduction), details are well maintained and, even at 25,600, the 5D Mark II produces cleaner images than you can get out of most any other DSLR on the market today.

HD video quality (1920x1080 at 30 fps in 16:9 aspect ratio) is excellent.

Whether you're shooting stills or video, you need the highest quality lens you can afford. Of course, good glass is ideal for any camera but because the 5D Mark II offers such high resolution and is a full-frame camera, optics are even more important with this camera

CONCLUSIONS
When the original 5D was introduced, Canon made it possible for photographers with relatively modest budgets to purchase a full-frame DSLR. Now, for about the same price, photographers can easily put their hands on a full-frame, high resolution camera with HD video.

s appealing as the camera's HD video feature is (especially for wedding photographers, photojournalists, and underwater shooters), the 5D Mark II is, first and foremost, a digital still camera. Excellent image quality and a full feature set are the camera's two biggest selling points; HD video is the icing on the cake. Whether you're stepping up from another Canon DSLR or want a back-up for a higher Canon model, the 5D Mark II is certain to appeal to the most discerning photographer-even those who will never (or almost never) utilize the video feature.

Construction

The Asus VH236H is made out of a fairly cheap-feeling glossy black plastic, although it seems to be more than sturdy enough for the monitor’s diminutive bulk. There is no height adjustment, however there is a tilt adjustment that should be adequate for most setups. The tilt mechanism is extremely stiff; you will most likely be using both hands to do adjustments. On the plus side, whatever angle you adjust the tilt to, it’s going to stay there until you purposely move it again. Should you wish to use a different stand or do a wall mount setup, it uses a standard 100x100mm VESA mount. The black glossy frame looks great, although like most glossy plastics it is a magnet for dust and fingerprints. I would have liked to have seen a soft cloth included in the box, but they are easy enough to obtain.

The buttons are a bit cheap feeling as well, although they are sufficient for their intended function. The power button is orange, making it easier to find in the dark. The blue power LED is relatively bright, but not enough to be distracting. There are 2 2-watt speakers included, and considering they are built into a monitor, they sound decent. Knowing you have a set of speakers no matter where your monitor is a nice addition to a monitor with such a low price point. There is a headphone jack next to the video inputs, so if your case is in a location not conducive to using headphones, this monitor gives you an additional option. There is also a digital-output for when you hook up a console via HDMI and want to send the audio signal to an external audio system. Considering the size of this monitor, the footprint is relatively small…even on a cramped desk, fitting this monster is not too difficult.

Desktop Usage

Tooling around on the desktop and browsing the internet is a bit lacking on the Asus VH236H. A fair amount of tweaking is required to prevent things from looking blown out, although it is possible in just about any room no matter what the lighting situation is. I personally enjoy fiddling with new additions to my PC and making them my own, so I don’t mind the necessary adjustments, but be forewarned that you aren’t going to take this monitor out of the box and just start going to town. Coming from a Dell 2005FPW, I had to make adjustments to the overall theme and the default font used for Windows XP SP3. In the time since I originally wrote this review, I’ve moved on to Windows 7…and the desktop performance is much better. It certainly isn’t as good as an IPS display, but it’s more than sufficient for most people.

Gaming

This is where the true capability of the Asus VH236H is revealed. This is, quite honestly, the absolute best TN panel for gaming I have ever come across. With a grey-to-grey response time of 2ms, there is zero evidence of ghosting. No matter how fast the action is moving on screen or how quickly you whip your viewpoint around, there will be a razor sharp picture. There are details that I never even noticed on my 2005FPW, and not just because of the higher resolution. Colors and textures seem to jump right off the screen, and games like Dragon Age with a lot of tiny details look positively stunning. This truly is a gorgeous display when used for gaming…it’s something that you just have to see in person, words don’t do it justice.

Conclusion

At a $200 price point, there are some sacrifices that must be made. From a cheap feeling (but great looking) housing to no USB ports to uselessness for professional photo editing, this monitor is not a jack of all trades. With the right tweaking, you can get this display to look decent for daily use, but if you don’t play modern games on your PC, completely disregard that this monitor exists. There are much better options out there for desktop use, and this is definitely the wrong monitor to use for heavy-duty photo editing (although I think it would be good enough for video editing.) HOWEVER! If you play modern games on your computer or need a small display for a console hookup, you would have to spend double the cost or more to find something better…and it would only be marginally better. If you are primarily a gamer, the Asus VH236H should be at the top of your list.

One thing to keep in mind, however…this IS a TN panel, which means you may have some viewing angle problems with Eyefinity…keep those receipts!

The Quest for a Perfect Cup of Coffee
It is generally agreed that there are four basic elements critical to the perfect cup:
Element 1. Water & Coffee Filters:
Coffee is 98% water. Often overlooked, the quality of the water is as important as the quality of the coffee. A good rule of thumb is that if your water doesn’t taste good from the tap, it won’t taste any better in your coffee. That’s why Cuisinart has added a water filter to the 14-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker. The charcoal water filter removes chlorine, bad tastes and odors, for the purest cup of coffee every time.
Element 2. Coffee:
While the bulk of the liquid is water, all of the flavor should be from the coffee. To achieve the same great quality of coffee you receive at a coffee bar, you need to use the same quality beans. Buy the beans fresh and whole, only about a two weeks’ supply at a time for maximum freshness. Once the coffee bean is broken, its flavor degrades very quickly. If it is not practical to buy small supplies, we recommend you separate larger amounts of beans into one to two week portions immediately after purchase, and freeze them in airtight containers. The best way to maximize freshness is to minimize exposure to air, light and moisture. So, once removed from the freezer, beans should be maintained in a sealed container at room temperature, since damaging condensation occurs every time the beans are removed from the freezer or refrigerator. Note that some coffee experts advise against freezing dark-roast beans, because freezing can cause the oils to coagulate. Other experts disagree. We suggest you experiment and decide yourself.
Element 3. The Perfect Cup of Coffee Grind:
The grind of the coffee is critical for proper flavor extraction. If the grind is too fine, over extraction and bitterness will result. Too fine a grind may also clog the filter. If the grind is too coarse, the water will pass through too quickly and the desired flavors will not be extracted. A medium-fine grind is recommended.
Element 4. Proportion:
Coffee that is too strong or too weak is always a disappointment. Add 1 level scoop of ground coffee per cup and adjust the amount according to taste. Note: the maximum capacity for ground coffee is 17 tablespoons for the 12-cup coffeemaker. Exceeding this amount may cause overflow if the coffee is too finely ground.

	Carafe Temperature Knob: For controlling the temperature of the coffee after brewing. There are three temperature settings high, medium and low.
	1- to 4-Cup Setting: The 1- to 4-cup setting button is used when you make small amounts of coffee. Normal coffeemakers will produce a colder batch of coffee when smaller amounts are made, because the heater doesn’t have enough time to properly ‘warm up’ to heat a small amount. The 1- to 4-cup setting basically ‘double heats’ the water, making your smaller amounts as piping hot as a full pot would be. To use simply press the 1- to 4-cup button on the control panel after turning on the unit.
	Self-Clean Setting: Tells you when it’s time to clean your coffeemaker. Remove built-up calcification from the water reservoir, to help extend the life of your coffeemaker.
	Function Knob: Includes Program, Auto On, Auto Off, Brew, Clock and Audible Tone: Coffeemaker can be programmable to automatically start brewing up to 24 hours in advance and can be programmed to shut off up to 4 hours after brewing. The Audible Tone signals the end of the brew cycle with five beeps (coffee will continue to stream from the filter for a few seconds after the tone).
	Brew Pause: Stops flow of coffee from basket when carafe is removed (30 seconds max) from the heater plate, so a cup can be poured in mid-brew. Since the flavor extraction rate varies during the brew cycle, we recommend allowing the brewing cycle to finish before pouring the coffee. The coffee brewed at the beginning of the cycle has a flavor profile which is very different from the flavor at the end of the cycle. Once the coffee has finished brewing, stir it before serving to blend the flavors. The coffee at the bottom of the carafe will be somewhat stronger than the coffee at the top.
	Carafe: The easy pour, no drip 14-cup glass carafe has an ergonomic handle and brewed coffee markings for two to fourteen cups.
	Adjustable Heater Plate: Allows you to keep brewed coffee at desired temperature. Scratch resistant with black, nonstick coating.
	Cord Storage
	Power Loss Backup System: One minute protection in case a breaker trips, the unit is unplugged, or the power fails. It holds all programmed information, including time of day, auto on time and auto off time.

This viewer is pretty easy to set up if you're familiar with viewers. The manual is not too helpful. They also work just as described and have pretty sharp resolution. Their one failing is that the batteries do not seem to hold their charge very long (at least mine don't). I'm experimenting with settings and hoping that I can overcome this problem. On the other hand, I did not pay a lot for the 2-pack of this viewer and so am not too disappointed.

Contrary to the stated specs, the software included with this product (on a mini-CD by the way, so you can't use it with today's slot-loading CD drives) will NOT work on newer versions of OS X. I had to go back to OS 10.3.9 before it would even install at all. Product support appears to be non-existent. And even if you do finally manage to transfer photos over, you can't set the automatic motion detector. Pressing the key sequence that is supposed to get you to this setting results in a Power Off? screen! I'm sending this piece of crap back posthaste!

Review:
Lenovo's business-orientated ThinkPad range is no stranger to PC Pro's A List, and now the first of its newly-redesigned IdeaPad models has landed on our doorstep. The IdeaPad Z560 isn't going to have it easy, though: it joins legions of 15.6in notebooks all desperate to ensnare the casual consumer with promises of power, poise and affordability.

It's certainly good looking. Its glossy black lid is now an elderly design cliché, but while the chassis weighs in at a hefty 2.58kg, the smooth curves and bold Lenovo logo still manage to make many of its competitors look decidedly frumpy. The brushed aluminium interior, meanwhile, shuns gaudiness and colour for a monochromatic, classy feel. Consumer laptop this may be, but it looks like it means business.

Build quality isn't up to bullet-proof ThinkPad standards, the IdeaPad's glossy lid feels well up to protecting the TFT panel within. The base and wristrest also prove impressively taut and stiff. Only the area around the DVD writer feels a bit creaky: picking the laptop up by its corner occasionally produced unpleasant creaks as the DVD writer flexed in its moorings.

We're willing to forgive such minor transgressions in light of the rather excellent keyboard, however. The Scrabble-tile keys provide a lovely feel, and despite the narrow-right shift key (Lenovo has decided to cram the cursor keys in alongside) the layout makes for supremely pleasant typing. The touchpad is less praiseworthy: depressing the soft-feeling buttons often saw our thumbs foul the trackpad and arrest the pointer in its tracks, making drag and drop operations aggravatingly tricky.

The ubiquitous blue ThinkVantage button, ever-present on Lenovo's business laptops, is replaced with a row of touch-sensitive buttons along the keyboard's top edge. A quick dab of the finger is all it takes to mute the volume or slow the cooling fans down for quiet operation, while the other two buttons give one-touch access to Lenovo's OneKey Theater mode and Energy Management application.

Dab the OneKey Theater mode button while watching a movie, and you'll be glad you did. The tinny speakers sound lightweight at first, but the OneKey Theater mode enables Dolby's Audio Enhancer software, which gives audio more body and substance. Image quality darkens slightly, too, which seems to give movies and images a touch more solidity. DisplayMate soon revealed these benefits come at the cost of crushed blacks and some banding in greyscale ramps, however.

With or without Lenovo's OneKey Theater mode, however, the 15.6in 1,366 x 768 display is a competent performer. There's no lack of brightness, and good colour reproduction and fine contrast made a great job of displaying our HD videos and test photographs accurately. As with most notebooks in its class, however, viewing angles are narrow.

You can save money by going for a model equipped with a Core i3 processor, but we can't see why you would, so reasonable are the prices of faster models. Our review laptop had a Core i5-450M at the helm accompanied by 4GB of DDR3 memory, with a dedicated graphics chipset, Nvidia's GeForce 310M, taking the reins from the Intel HD graphics embedded on the processor. It's a highly competent pairing. Our application benchmarks raced to a fine 1.67, and managed a modest 36fps in our Crysis gaming test, with resolution set to the native 1,366 x 768 and detail left at its lowest setting.

It's disappointing that Lenovo hasn't employed Nvidia's Optimus graphics switching technology. Instead, the power-efficient HD graphics embedded on Intel's Core i5 lie dormant; a decision that sees light-use battery life tumble to a distinctly average 3hrs 49mins. Heavy use, meanwhile, runs the battery dry in just 56 minutes.

Elsewhere there's a sizable 500GB hard disk, a 0.3 megapixel webcam, single-band 802.11n wireless and Bluetooth. Connectivity is good too, with a bevy of ports and connectors: D-SUB and HDMI monitor outputs nestle alongside three USB 2 ports, one of which doubles as an eSATA port, and the increasingly rare provision of an ExpressCard/34 slot is complemented by an SD/MMC/xD/MS memory card reader.

Lenovo's IdeaPad Z560 is a confident entry into the consumer 15.6in notebook market. A few niggles preclude it from earning a Recommended award, such as the errant touchpad buttons and poor battery life, but it's nonetheless impressive that Lenovo has managed to shoehorn Intel's Core i5, a dedicated Nvidia graphics chipset and an excellent keyboard into a gorgeous looking chassis for just £554.

Got this unit for half price during the before Christmas sales and wasn't sure how it would work. To my surprise, it's one of the best touch screen movie and music players that's non iPod and even has an expandable memory card slot up to 32 GB. It also has built-in speakers.

I read the other problems that people had but didn't encounter any of those. However, the movies loaded are all wmv format and not MP4. But, all my music is in mp3 format and the player accepts both wmw and mp3 formats.

I don't know if it will work with iTunes since the only software I've used is Windows Media Player to upload music and movies. I'm giving the player 4 stars instead of 5 because the volume control on video playback doesn't work.

It'll just play at one volume level even if you set it at 1 or 25. But, if connecting with external speaker with volume control, the volume can be controlled just fine.

The music playback volume can be adjusted and does not have this same problem. In summary, it's worth the SALE price for all it's functions.

The Good:
*Vibrant colors--of which ancient, grunting, CRT-watching man could only dream.
*HD content is displayed so realistically I'll quit my job and live under a bridge to watch TV all day.
*Even standard-def shows look quite good on this set, like super models only five or ten years past their prime.
*Black levels are significantly deeper than I would have expected based on all the online whinging about edge-lit LED screens (e.g., "Give me local dimming, or give me death!").
*Supa-thin profile makes the compact fluorescent "flat" panels look McDonald's chubby.

The Tolerable:
*Crowded buttons on the remote, which I hardly use in favor of the cable company's universal (or maybe no more than planetary) remote. I'll only pick up the Samsung remote on occasion to adjust advanced settings, but when I do, I often push an unintended button.
*Very slight edge-lit brightness on black borders. Much of what's on TV will fill the screen, so you won't even have the opportunity to notice the effect. Really, it's not that bad--I've seen far worse light leakage while watching movies on my 2007 alum iMac.

The Tolerated:
*There's only one thing that bugs me a bit, and it's not a deal breaker. (Besides, I already bought the TV, so the deal has been, well. . . concluded, if you must.) When the screen is mostly black and only a small graphic is displayed somewhere, the LEDs go a bit dim--you can actually see, over a fraction of a second, the light levels drop. I'm assuming that the TV was set up this way so that the LEDs wouldn't be leaking ghostly light on a largely black screen. I've fussed with the settings, but I can't make this effect go away. I haven't yet fully explored all the setting menus, so I just might hit pay dirt soon, or maybe Samsung will nix that effect with a firmware update. At any rate, whatever text is dimmed is still very legible, and when the next screen-filling scene pops up, the LEDs power up without any detectable delay so that thereafter the screen's as bright as it should be. No biggie--it's not enough of a problem for me to scratch a star off the rating.

The Tweakable:
*Turning off motion smoothing is not difficult under most circumstances; indeed, some content begs to be smooved, e.g., sports and competitive cooking shows. But when I first plugged in a movie via the USB drive, I got motion smooving by default and wanted none of it. Whenever I pushed the remote's "Menu" button, I ended on a screen far, far away from the USB drive's content, and ended up adjusting the picture settings for the cable feed and not the target movie on the USB drive. I was bedeviled awhile, but a bit of snooping around the owner's manual led to this minor discovery: by pressing the "Tools" button on the Samsung remote, I could enter a submenu that let me turn off the smooving effect without leaving the movie. Cheap soap opera video effect, begone!

Conclusion:
The picture is what matters most, and this TV's output makes my jaw drop to the floor. Which is rather fortuitous, because I need something down there to catch my eyeballs.

What's great about it: slim, size, vedio camera, screen clarity, photo playing mode ...

What's not so great: should have built in a full-functioned E-book reader "Pretty cute little stuff with multifunctions which are all an in-hand media player would ever expect except for an E-book reader. I dont like to cut a novel into numerous 5k chips every time to make them readable on the machine since my another iriver mp4 player does great on E-book reading without any extra procedures and I have been got used to a funtion like that. What's more, even if I cut a long essay into chips with 5k binary limit for each one, some of them may still be unreadable through the note reader since the wheel just simply doesn't work out to scroll the screen down. Other than these, it is a cute,awesome,versatile entertainment for on-the-go. Love the color especially.

Well this is the new ipod from Apple : Apple 16GB iPod nano, Purple

What's great about it: light weight, radio, video camera ... What's not so great: really small for bigger hands "I actually won this ipod at a raffle, but I was saving up to purchase either this one or an ipod touch anyways, so it was nice to get it for free. I have an old 60GB ipod video that I use in my car and now I use this ipod for walking around campus and such. But if I was purchasing a nano, I would go for this 16GB, it's only $30 to double the memory.

Some nice features it includes: FM radio with live pause and song tagging. However you can only tag songs if the radio station will let you. The live pause is great for if you want to listen to a song again. The radio requires headphones though (any headphones work), or if you plug it into a speaker using the headphone jack.

The video camera is a great feature to have, however its not that high of a quality when you transfer it onto your computer. Camera has great video effects (ie black and white, x-ray, security camera, bulge). Does not take pictures though, which I found disappointing. The videos you record do not show up on iTunes though, you have to go to My Computer and find the ipod drive, then open the folder named DCIM, and the video files are in .mp4 format.

It includes an accelerometer like the ipod touch, so certain games require you to use it, such as Maze, where you roll a marble around a maze. When you're not in a game or watching a video, if you turn it on the side, coverflow displays, however you can turn this feature off.

Screen is only 2.2 in, so not the best viewing for movies and games. If you have bigger hands, it can be a little hard to control the ipod as it is very thin and the click wheel is quite small compared to the ipod classic. I gave Durability a 4 because it is so thin that it feels like it could break if you're not careful. I'm going to be purchasing a clear case for my ipod shortly. Screen does not scratch, but can get fingerprints easily.
