My son is nearing the end of year one as an official teenager.  Thus far, I’ve not had to bear too much of what I call the “I Am Teen, Hear Me Roar!!!” effect until as of most recently.

Over the past several weeks/months, his appetite has drastically increased to the point where the first thing he says to me when I arrive home is “I’m hungry”.  So, like many other mom’s of teenagers, I’m just going to call him “HUNGRY”.

I remember being a teen, but as a girl, even if I was hungry, I was likely so focused on maintaining my girlish figure, that food was secondary or even tertiary! I did have a high metabolism, as does his father, so perhaps that’s the issue.

I’ve done my son and myself a disservice, by not encouraging him to participate in meal preparation.  Racking up on snacks is not my style, though I’ve entertained it a few times only to find that teenagers are not the best at rationing per se’, especially if it tastes good.

I remember my Dad used to “hide” food when my younger brother was a teen.  I lived with them at the time.  I’m 10 years older than my brother and my brother is 10 years older than my son.  It’s all beginning to come back to me.

By living with them, as a single mom of a young child, I learned that teenagers will eat almost ANYTHING.  I once attempted an organic diet of fresh organic vegetables and fruits, various products composed of soy, veggie burgers, tofu products, whole wheat pasta and such.

How many times do you think I came home to an empty carton of SOY milk?

How many teenagers do you know that will eat a tomato like it’s an apple?

I’m learning how-to-deal in various ways, including tips from my colleagues at my full-time work outside of the home job, from fellow bloggers, from magazines and e-zines, the internet and through social networking.

The best tip I’ve received thus far is regarding leftovers.  I guess I missed the first signs of “I Am Teen, Hear Me Roar!!!”, where he suddenly lost interest in leftovers.  Looking back, that likely occurred at the onset of the teenage years, about a year ago.  Without enduring the constant leftover lunches myself, my fridge is constantly in danger of becoming a Penicillin breeding ground.  Instead, a colleague suggested the following response:

TEEN: I don’t want leftovers!

Parent of Teen: Well, you can eat again tomorrow when I make something else.

At first, I felt like a bad mom.  Sadly, I still entertain him, when I know his Dad does not or won’t.  He knows more than he lets on and it’s time to stand my ground!

The kid will learn how to be self-sufficient (to a point), or else he’ll end up being one of the grumbling entitled workers that we encounter on a daily basis, whether it be in retail, hospitality, customer service or warehouse, etc.

Tonight, my significant other will work his second day at his part-time job for extra income.  He’s been the meal-maker, as I’ve been the breadwinner.  Tonight, I will be tasked with making dinner.  Tonight, I will engage “HUNGRY”.

I’ll let you know how it goes! I’d love to hear your tips and tricks on how to deal with a hungry teenager! I’ve got about 8 hours before I need to make a dinner decision, so please comment below!

Two years ago, I had a garden tub in an apartment.  We thought we wanted a house, so we moved into a rental.  In order to afford the rental prices of a home in our area, our option were limited to older homes, which meant traditional bath tubs.  The rental home nightmare is a story for another day, but we’re back in an apartment.  I traded garden tubs off for a sunroom, which I am sitting in now, gazing out the window at the gloomy skies.  Sun will come soon enough and showers will be more frequent, just to cool down from the heat!

When I head into the shower tonight, I’ll be able to choose from two products if I don’t want my bathtub ledge covered in personal care and hygiene products.  Shampoo+ Body wash + Conditioner + Razor = MORE THAN 2!! There’s just not enough room here for all the products I’m used to having around, not to mention the fact that I have to share a bathroom with my significant other.  If you find an affordable 2 bedroom, 3 bath apartment, let me know!

As you can see, the space in the corner, holding the Ivory 2-IN-1 is about all I’ve got times two, without spilling over onto the ledge.

As soon as I heard about Ivory 2-IN-1 Hair and Body Wash, I knew I had to give it a try.

I received this product for free for evaluation in exchange for an honest review.  All opinions expressed are 100% honest and my own.

I love being able to simplify things.  Immediately, I drifted into thought about not having to strategically plan Axe® purchases around coupons, as well as other shampoo, conditioner and body wash products.  I like tropical and floral scents; the boys like manly scents.  You can’t find this in a bar soap and quite frankly, that’s what comes to mind when I hear the name Ivory.

Much to my surprise, Ivory has come up with a successful product.  That’s not to say it’s the first of it’s kind, but from what I’ve seen the 2-IN-1 shampoo and body wash products have been limited to target men.  Some women like to keep it simple, too!

Ivory’s 2-IN-1 Hair and Body wash is free of dyes and heavy perfumes and is available in Refreshing and Energizing Scents.  I got to try the Refreshing scent, which is similar to a rain shower scent you might find from other scented products.  It’s a fairly light scent, but still left a refreshing scent behind when I was done with my showers.

Ivory 2-IN-1 Hair and Body Wash leaves me and my family feeling clean from head-to-toe.  Neither of the boys complained about the scent.

My hair was left clean and did not feel dry, as Ivory 2-IN-1 Hair and Body Wash contains moisturizers.  The only hurdle I encountered was dry scalp, which I’m naturally prone to.  The boys did not experience dry scalp.  I have a separate after shower product that I use for this.

We’ve been using it for several weeks, so I think I’m in the clear to replace some of the existing products in our household. It’s reasonably priced for the size bottle you get and its uses.

As a money-saving driven consumer, social media junkie and overall internet junkie, I’m constantly battling with an overflowing email inbox.  I’ve tried numerous solutions and have finally settled on an amazing web-based solution called Mailstrom.

Mailstrom is designed specifically for reducing the amount of email in your inbox. It works with IMAP accounts, specifically Google’s Gmail. You cannot compose or reply in Mailstrom.

While you cannot compose or reply, you can click on links within emails and unsubscribe.

Mailstrom offers various options for sorting.  Sort by sender, subject, lists, time, social, shopping and size.

Here’s a closer look at the view by time.  Two days, two weeks and then months are displayed, including a view for the remainder of the current month.

The social view displays emails from popular social networking sites such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, Spotify, YouTube, Facebook and more.  This is just a snapshot of what’s in my email inbox.

Here’s a closer look at the message list.  Messages are sorted by the senders with the largest number of emails.

The message panel displays the sender, subject, date and time.  Select All is checked by default, allowing you to quickly archive, delete or move related emails.  Uncheck a box or two to keep the latest email in your inbox and then archive, delete or move the rest.

The move function, now offers an option to create a rule to apply to future messages.  At this time Mailstrom only works with your inbox and not sub-folders.  I stay away from the “move” function, as that’s what got me into this bind in the first place.

Within each you view you can filter.  In the example below, I searched under the sender view using the keyword “mom”.  Results for all sender names or email addresses containing the word “mom” are displayed.

By default all senders are selected.  This is indicated by the orange highlight.  All search results display in the email list on the right hand side.  If you want to view emails for just one sender within the results, click on that sender’s name.

I can’t begin to imagine a day where I actually have zero emails, but the more I use Mailstrom and unsubscribe to things I don’t really “need”, the closer I get.  In fact, if you take a look at the very first image in this post, you will see that I’ve been deleting emails throughout this overview of Mailstrom.  I started with 1,554 and in just a few minutes I had deleted 40 emails!

Mailstrom is constantly working to improve the product.  You’ll also receive a daily inbox report containing email stats such as top senders, top subjects, email volume detailing messages received and messages deleted and finally sent messages based on Gmail statistics.

When you click on the Go To Mailstrom button in the email, you’re taken to recommendations from Mailstrom, which is a quick way to get a start on cleaning up your email.

At the very bottom, when you select Go To Analysis, you’ll be taken to the main Mailstrom interface.

When I started using Mailstrom, I had over 15,000 emails in my inbox.  I had reached the point, where I didn’t even want to open my email.  While I’m still working towards a smaller inbox, things are much more manageable.

My email issue caused problems with finances, friends & family, professional networks I belonged to and more.  Even with a large number of emails, Mailstrom can help make things manageable.

Our go-to toothpaste varied amongst popular commercial brands, that you might find in your own household.  When I set the two products side by side, it was then, that I realized that my regular toothpaste had a warning on it.  I’ve seen it before, but never thought TOO much of it.  After re-reading, the words that stick out are “contact a Poison Control Center right away”.  Now is that something you’d want to put in your mouth?

I was prompted to learn more about my toothpaste and it’s ingredients.  I’ve often referred to EWG’s Skin Deep website for information on healthy and beauty related products and came to find the hazards of the ingredients listed above.  That’s not something I’m willing to risk, especially for my child.

The recommended use of OraMD is a 4-step process:

• Brush twice daily, morning & evening, with 2-5 drops of OraMD
• Floss every evening before brushing and as needed
• Mouthwash (swish & gargle) with OraMD twice daily; morning and evening, with 2-5 drops per 1 ounce of water
• Mid-morning, mid-afternoon and as needed, put 2-5 drops of OraMD on the tip of the tongue to kill bacteria and for fresh breath.

I started with replacing my toothpaste for me and my boyfriend.  OraMD is quick to disclose that the first few times you use it, the taste is “stout”.  If you prepare yourself for this and stick to the lesser number of recommended drops, gradually increasing if necessary, you will not be taken by surprise.  Their claims that it is stout, are spot on.  We’ve been using OraMD for about 4 weeks.  At first, I had to use it “with” toothpaste to withstand the bitterness of the flavor and I slowly weaned myself from using it with toothpaste.

Many large corporations have a back up generator in case of power outage.  Power outages (a total loss of power) occur for various reasons; from faults, construction, damage from natural disasters, short-circuits or overloading, among other things.

If your primary job is a work-at-home job, do you have a backup plan in place?

While I work outside of the home as my primary job, as I was preparing posts for my site this evening I experienced a brief power outage in my apartment complex. 

Fortunately, I had my laptop plugged in whereas I normally run off my battery during the evening, so I had a few hours left when the power went out.  I definitely need a better plan for backup power because my battery will only last for so long.

As far as the internet goes, I was able to utilize my NetZero 4g Hotspot to keep me up and running.  While 4gb might only last me (personally) about 8 hours of internet time, it’s invaluable when faced with a power outage! Since I work full-time outside of the home during the day, the hours I have in the evening are CRITICAL!

If you don’t have a “back-up plan”, I strongly suggest you get one.

As for me, I’ll be researching battery back-ups for my laptop and cell phone.

Tzu Chi is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to worldwide charity, providing disaster relief, medicine and education to those in need, bone marrow donation and environmental protection and more all through community volunteers.

Their presence in the U.S. was brought to my attention by my employer. As you’ll see in the following video Tzu Chi’s footprint in the U.S. throughout 2012 is astounding.

Please note that while Tzu Chi operates on Buddhist principles, it is a human organization.  

People of all creeds, races, religions volunteer and are helped.

 

The organization was established in 1966, by Dharma Master Cheng Yen in Hualien, Taiwan. Throughout the years since then, they’ve expanded to all five major continents, providing aide to over 69 nations.

In 1984, Tzu Chi was first registered in the U.S. as a non-profit organization. With more than 20 community programs, volunteers provide family services, services to the homeless, visits to senior homes, medical and dental services, recycling and reading to children. They also work with neighborhood schools and alongside organizations such as the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House and more.

2001: Cash aide to families affected by the 9/11 attacks, totaling approximately $2 million dollars to 3,164 families.

2005: Cash aide to families affected by Hurricane Katrina, totaling approximately $4.12 million dollars to 22,487 households. A fundraising campaign utilizing Tzu Chi networks in over 30 countries made this possible.

2008: The American Red Cross and Tzu Chi agreed to combine their efforts in disaster relief, emergency preparedness and response, cross training and other cooperative actions in the U.S.

2010: Food, medical and dental aide were provided to families affected by the devastating earthquakes in Haiti. Over 200,000 people were helped.

For Tzu Chi’s footprint in the U.S. during 2012, watch the video below. Tzu Chi continues to offer aide to previously assisted disaster areas. The efforts don’t stop at the initial need for help.

It’s on, like Donkey Kong.  We’ve officially entered the TEEN years.   Today I received “the sign”.

While my son’s first year of officially being a “TEEN” is nearly over, in a matter of weeks, I’ve yet to “feel it” yet.

Yesterday afternoon, I called my son on my way home from work to let him know I had to run a few errands prior to arriving home.

I advised him to eat one of the Campbell’s Go Soups if he was hungry immediately.  He then proceed to advise me he already had Pringles. (Now that’s wholesome).

I repeated that he should eat the Go Soups if that didn’t tide him over.  He then told me that he’s NEVER FULL!!
