The First Two Weeks: Your Baby’s Best (and Sleepiest) Window

Here’s something I’ve learned after 17+ years of photographing newborns: timing really does matter. Those first 5-14 days are the sweet spot, and there’s a simple reason — babies sleep. A lot.

In those early days, your baby hasn’t hit the cluster feeding stage yet, so they’re not constantly wanting to nurse. They’re content, sleepy, and so much easier to settle during a session. Plus, both parents are typically still home, which makes scheduling so much simpler before pediatrician appointments and work schedules take over.

I don’t need a perfectly sleeping baby to get beautiful photos — a mix of sleepy and awake shots actually tells the story best. What we want to avoid is an unhappy, hungry baby, and that’s much more common once we’re past those early weeks. Older babies are absolutely still photographable, but sessions require more flexibility, more feeding breaks, and a little extra creativity.

What surprises most parents is just how fast that window closes. Suddenly your baby is four weeks old, looks completely different, and your favorite photographer has been booked for months.

What Is the Sweet Spot for Booking A Newborn Photographer? (Hint: You’re Probably Still Pregnant)

My advice? Reach out as soon as you’ve told your family and friends and you’re ready to start talking about it. There is no such thing as too early to book your newborn photographer.

Here’s how it works: once you inquire, we’ll chat about your session and lock in your due date as a placeholder. Since I only take on four sessions per month, that entire week stays flexible for you — so whether baby arrives a little early or decides to take their sweet time, we’re covered.

Once you’re booked, you’ll receive a guide with tips and advice to help you prepare for your session day. You’ll also get access to styling guides so you can start thinking about what to wear well before the newborn haze sets in. And of course, I’ll send everything again a couple of days before your session as a refresher.

Most clients tell me that getting this checked off their list is such a relief, knowing their photographer is locked in, their spot is secure, and they have someone to answer questions along the way.

What Happens If Baby Comes Early (Or Fashionably Late)?

Let’s be real! Babies don’t follow anyone’s schedule. And that’s completely okay, because I’ve built my entire business around that reality.

When baby arrives, just shoot me a message. I’ll be honest, I’m probably already Instagram stalking you to see if there’s a birth announcement! If we’ve done your maternity session together, chances are we’re already in touch around that time anyway, so the transition to scheduling your newborn session is seamless.

If baby hasn’t arrived by the due date and I haven’t heard from you, I’ll check in with a quick message, something along the lines of “Hey, hopefully you’re not still pregnant and you’re just in the newborn haze!” Because nobody wants to be pregnant longer than they need to be, and I get that.

I actually know firsthand how unexpected early arrivals can feel. My daughter came a month early, at 35 weeks I found out she’d be arriving the following week. One of the first calls I made was to my own newborn photographer to give her a heads up, and she made it work without a hitch. That experience is part of why I’m so intentional about being flexible for my clients.

My one ask? When you’re settled in the hospital — maybe the day baby arrives or the day after — go ahead and send me a quick message. That’s it. Everything else I’ll take care of.

Why Your Favorite Photographers Book Up Fast?

I only take on four newborn sessions per month, and that’s completely intentional. It means I have the flexibility to move sessions around when babies arrive early or late, and it means every single family gets my full attention — before, during, and after their session. I’m not cramming in bookings and rushing from one family to the next. You’re not just a slot on my calendar.

But here’s what that also means: my calendar fills up fast. And if you wait I might not be able to get you in because of other booked sessions.

What If Baby Is Already Here?

First things first, it is never too late to get beautiful photos of your baby. Never. Your baby is only going to keep growing, so whatever stage they’re at right now, these are still moments worth capturing.

If your baby is four to six weeks old and you’re just now reaching out to book a newborn photographer, I want you to know we can absolutely still make this happen. But I do want to set realistic expectations so your session day feels relaxed rather than stressful.

Here’s what sessions look like with babies in that four to six week range:

• Sleep is less predictable. Babies at this age aren’t snoozing as deeply or as easily as they were in those first two weeks, so we work in shorter windows and follow baby’s lead.
• Cluster feeding is usually in full swing. We build in frequent feeding breaks and let baby set the pace.
• The pacifier becomes our best friend. We play a lot of “pull the paci, get the shot, plug it back in” and honestly, we’ve gotten really good at it.
• Most photos will be mom and dad holding baby. And those are some of the most beautiful images I’ve ever taken. Baby is happiest in your arms, and that shows.

What you gain with an older baby is something really special too, those wide awake, bright-eyed shots of your baby actually looking at you. Parents absolutely love those.

It’s August, your kids are splashing in the pool, and the last thing on your mind is Charlottesville fall family portraits. But here’s the thing—while you’re enjoying summer, my smartest clients are already securing their spot for those dreamy autumn sessions with me. And there’s a really good reason why they don’t wait.

Last summer, I had a mom tell me she’d call back in September to book her family’s fall portraits with me. When she finally reached out in late September, I had to deliver the disappointing news: I was completely booked. She ended up having to find another photographer and settle for a rushed December session. That conversation reminded me why I always tell my clients: if you want to work with me in the fall, we need to plan during the summer.

As a Virginia native and Charlottesville lifestyle photographer, I’ve watched this same pattern play out year after year. Families dream of those gorgeous golden-hour photos with autumn leaves, but they wait until the weather actually turns crisp to start thinking about booking. While other photographers are working Saturday and Sunday sessions, I’m out on our sailboat on the Chesapeake Bay with my husband and our three kids—Will, Rob, and Grace. Weekends are our family time, especially during Virginia’s gorgeous fall weather.

This means all my fall sessions happen on weekdays, 1-2 hours before sunset. With such limited availability and the need to keep backup dates open for weather, my fall calendar fills up quickly. Many clients wait until the weather actually turns nice and cool before thinking about Cville fall family portraits. By that point, all the good dates and times are typically booked out.

The families who get their preferred dates with me? They’re the ones booking while it’s still warm outside, thinking ahead to autumn.

Since I only shoot on weekdays before sunset, every available slot is essentially “prime time.” There are no less desirable weekend afternoon sessions to fall back on—it’s weekday golden hour or nothing. Right now in August, I still have a few October spots available, and early November can actually offer some of the most gorgeous foliage Virginia has to offer. But here’s something many families don’t consider: November brings the time change. After daylight saving time ends, sunset suddenly shifts much earlier, which affects our session timing and my available appointment slots.

Your Holiday Cards Deserve More Than a Rush Job

I know many families book their Charlottesville fall family portraits specifically for holiday cards, and I want to make sure you have plenty of time to create something beautiful. My galleries are delivered within two weeks of your session, which means you’ll have your images ready for any Black Friday deals if you want to take advantage of those savings.

I also offer holiday cards directly through our online gallery system, which take an additional 1-2 weeks for printing and shipping. When you book your session early in the season, you have time to review your images, make thoughtful selections, and get exactly the holiday cards you envision—not settle for whatever you can rush order.

Living in Virginia, I’ve learned that our fall color doesn’t follow the typical expected calendar. If you are expecting fall leaves and cooler temps in early September you will be disappointed.

According to Virginia’s official tourism site, peak fall foliage typically occurs from mid-October through early November, but timing varies by elevation and weather patterns. I would definitely say late Oct-early Nov is the best timeframe for Cville fall portraits.

When you book early, we can watch the foliage reports together and time your session for peak color in your preferred location.

This flexibility is only possible when you’re not scrambling for last-minute availability. Early bookers get first choice of dates and can adjust if needed as we get closer to fall and see how the season is developing.

What’s fall without pumpkins? Head over to Chiles Peach Orchard & Farm Market where they transform into a pumpkin paradise every autumn. Pick out your perfect pumpkin for carving (or just for Instagram pics—I won’t judge). Situated in Crozet, about 20 minutes from Charlottesville the views are just gorgeous! You can pick pumpkins from late Sept through November

But it’s not just about the pumpkins. The orchard offers hayrides, a corn maze, and even apple picking if you want to double down on your Charlottesville fall activity fun. Plus, there’s a farm market where you can grab some fresh cider and homemade goodies. Trust me, their apple cider donuts are to die for!

Chiles is the only local place I found where the pumpkins aren’t pre-picked.

Carter Mountain Orchard

But wait, there’s more! Carter Mountain isn’t just about apples. They’ve got fresh cider donuts that are basically little rings of heaven. Trust me; you’ll want to grab a dozen… or two.

Be sure to get a ticket if you plan to go on a weekend and be prepared for crowds because this is a fav on most lists of Charlottesville family events!

Fruit Hill Orchard

If you are looking for less crowds and a shorter walk you might find Fruit Hill is a better fit! This family owned and operated orchard located 30 min southeast of Cville is full of charm without the masses of people. Imagine this: crisp air, golden leaves crunching underfoot, and trees laden with juicy apples just waiting to be plucked. Seriously, it’s like something out of a cozy fall movie.

Be prepared to spend some money in the farm store because there is just so much that they offer including various seasonal fruits like peaches and pumpkins in addition to apples and baked goods. I’m literally eating one of their caramel apple cookies while I write this! We’ve already picked some apples this year for my kiddos field trip! Trust me, there’s nothing quite like standing on a mountain overlook, feeling like you’re on top of the world, and thinking, Yep, this beats Netflix. So grab your water bottle, maybe a snack (or three), and hit the trails—you won’t regret it!

If hiking isn’t really your thing but you still want those epic views I mentioned earlier (I mean who wouldn’t?), then hop in your car and take a drive down Skyline Drive .

This 105-mile road runs through Shenandoah National Park and offers stunning vistas at almost every turn-out point along the way—perfect for leaf peeping without breaking too much sweat!

Your dog was your first baby, and now you’re adding a human baby to the mix. If you’re dreaming of that perfect shot with your furry family member snuggled up next to your newborn, you’re not alone! But you’re probably also wondering: Is it safe? Will my dog cooperate? And how do I make it happen without total chaos when it comes to newborn photos with dogs?

I completely get it because I’ve been exactly where you are. When my husband and I met, we each had a dog – Maxie, a shepherd-looking mix, and Sadie, a yellow lab. They were absolutely our first babies, and when we had our oldest son Will, there was no question that Maxie and Sadie needed to be in those precious newborn photos. They were family, and our family photos wouldn’t be complete without them.

After 17+ years of photographing families and having three kids of my own, I’ve learned that some of the most meaningful images happen when we include those four-legged family members. The love and connection in those photos is just magical, and I’m always excited when families want to include your pets because I know from personal experience how important these images will become.

Safety First: Essential Precautions for Newborn Photos with Dogs

The most important thing I do at every session is meet your dog first before we make any decisions about how close we’re going to put your dog and your baby. I always tell families that if you have a younger puppy or a large dog that’s 2-3 years old, we’re not going to put them right next to each other on a bed. Instead, we’ll do other types of poses that keep both your dog and your baby safe.

I always talk to parents about your dog beforehand, and if you immediately say “no, we don’t want to put the baby near the dog,” then absolutely we’re going with that. I have several different poses we can do that still get your dog involved without your dog and baby being right on top of each other.

Since I’m typically in your home with your dog, I make sure that if I’ve touched your dog at all, I wash my hands before touching your baby. It’s a simple precaution that gives everyone peace of mind.

The key is reading the room – both your dog’s energy level and your comfort level as parents. Some families are completely relaxed about your calm, older dog being close to your newborn. Others prefer more distance, and that’s perfectly fine. My job is to work with what makes everyone comfortable while still creating beautiful images.

Preparing Your Dog for the Photo Session

Here’s something I learned from personal experience that I always share with my clients: don’t lock your dog away during the session! When we had our third baby, Grace, we thought it would be easier to keep Maxie and Sadie locked in my office and then let them out just for family photos at the end.

Big mistake! They were so hyped up and excited to meet our photographer that they were absolutely crazy. It definitely resulted in some funny family photos that we absolutely love, but it was very chaotic for those shots.

Now I always tell families planning newborn photos with dogs that if they want their pet in the session, we want the dog to meet me at the beginning and just be around during the session. This way, they get used to me being in the house and settle down naturally.

I do recommend that if dad can get out before the session and take the dog for a walk to tire them out a little, that’s incredibly helpful. I always joke that you want dogs tired and hungry, and you want kids well-fed and rested! If the dog is tired out, hungry, and looking for a treat, that’s going to work much better for us than if they’re super excited with the zoomies and don’t want any treats.

Posing Ideas That Work (And Ones to Avoid)

My favorite safe poses create beautiful compositions without compromising anyone’s safety. Here are some that work really well:

The Crib Shot: This is one of my favorites! We put the baby in the crib, and I’ll get a dog treat and put it in the crib to get the dog to put their nose up to the crib to get the treat. Then I edit out the dog treat later, so it looks like the dog is sweetly sniffing or looking at the baby. For smaller dogs, I might have a parent hold the dog and lean over the crib instead.

Parents Holding Baby: Having the parents hold the baby while sitting or standing near the dog creates a natural, safe barrier while still showing the family connection. The dog can sit at their feet or beside them on a couch.

Lifestyle Shots: Sometimes just having the dog laying on the floor during regular family photos contributes to that overall lifestyle feel we’re going for.

Bed Poses (for the right situations): If it’s an older, very calm dog and the parents are completely comfortable, I have done poses where we have the dog and baby on the parents’ bed. We’ve gotten some really sweet photos of gentle dogs sniffing babies. But these are typically older dogs from calmer breeds – definitely not young, large, energetic dogs.

The honest truth? Most of those sweet “genuine interactions” you see are actually created using tricks like the dog treat technique. But they capture the feeling families want to remember, which is what matters most.

Managing the Chaos: Tips for a Smooth Session

My typical session flow is pretty strategic. I come in and introduce myself to the dog while they’re excited and want to sniff me and be petted – I do all of that! Then I wash my hands and get started with nursery shots and baby photos with parents in the nursery.

At this point, we just let the dog come and go naturally. Once the dog is relaxed and used to me being in the house, then we can get more of those shots with dogs sitting at parents’ feet. Sometimes we wait until the end for those types of photos.

I have a little trick I love to use when we’re trying to get that perfect family shot. Maybe your’re in the nursery with the dog sitting at your feet, or in the master bedroom with the dog on the bed with them. I’ll make a very high-pitched, weird noise to catch the dog’s attention and get them to perk their ears and tilt their head to look at me quizzically. It always results in such a cute photo! Sometimes I tell the parents beforehand, and sometimes I forget – which means I also get funny expressions from the parents because they weren’t expecting it, but we always get a really cute memory from that moment.

The beauty of working with dogs during newborn sessions is that they’re not the main focus – they’re just in there for a few shots here and there. They get their own natural breaks, and since animals can’t “do it over again” like we might ask people to do, I’m always watching and ready to capture those perfect moments when they happen.

The Secret to Perfect Newborn Photos with Dogs Every Time

I love being able to include pets in sessions because they’re such an important part of families’ lives. I know this from personal experience – when I look back on those newborn photos with my oldest son, I see our babies Maxie and Sadie, and I miss them. I think about them, and I’m so glad we have them documented with Will.

If you’re on the fence about newborn photos with dogs for your session, here’s what I want you to know: we can absolutely make it work. If you’re nervous about dealing with the stress, I won’t force it – no worries at all! But if you want your pet in the session and you’re just a little unsure, I can give you tips on what to do ahead of time, and we can keep things calm and easy during the session to get those photos.

I haven’t had an issue yet with getting at least some kind of newborn photos with dogs at a session. It just depends on the situation – sometimes it’s an older dog close to the baby, sometimes it’s a young dog where the baby stays safely in the crib, and sometimes it’s just the dog in the room while the session’s going on without super-posed shots. We can always find a way to include them that works for your family.

Here’s my final encouragement: it’s always meaningful to capture your family pet with your kids. Your child may not remember the pet when they’re older, but you’ll know they were there and loved. And trust me, years from now, you’ll be so grateful to have those images that show your complete family exactly as it was during this precious time.

I have a been a die-hard prime girl for almost my entire career. I can’t even count how many weddings, newborns and just general portraits I shot almost entirely with my Canon 50 1.2L. But then I made the switch to mirrorless and it just felt clunky swapping between lenses with the adapter. So I started leaning to the dark side of zoom lenses and the Canon RF 28-70 2.0L caught my eye.

Now I know I could have gotten an RF version of the 50 but I felt like I was constantly swapping between my 35, 50 for indoor sessions and my 50 and 100 for outdoor sessions. I wanted to make that process smoother and not lose cute moments my clients were having while I was swapping lenses. It was time to upgrade!

Why the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.0L is My Go-To Lens

Insanely Fast f/2.0 Aperture:

One of the few zoom lenses on the market with a constant f/2.0 aperture, making it a dream for low-light shooting and getting that beautiful background blur. This comes in especially handy when I’m shooting in nurseries that don’t have a ton of light. I live at 2.0 most of my sessions to get all the good light and the dreamy bokeh this lens is capable of.

Prime-Like Image Quality:

In the past I’ve felt like zoom lenses just didn’t have the sharpness of my primes. That has not been a problem with Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.0L.

Versatility in a Single Lens:

Whether I’m capturing wide-angle shots of a nursery or tight, emotional newborn portraits, I can do it all without swapping lenses. So often I’m going from wide shot to tight shot immediately and this let’s me do it without hassle.

Exceptional Bokeh & Depth of Field:

The f/2.0 aperture creates beautifully creamy bokeh, perfect for dreamy, soft baby skin. I can open up my aperture and get gorgeous blur on an emotional moment or stop it down to make sure everyone in the family including the dog is in focus.

Downsides to Consider

Size & Weight

At nearly 3.2 lbs, the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.0L isn’t exactly lightweight. It’s significantly heavier than carrying a single prime, so I use a good camera hand strap to offset the weight and keep babies safe from falling cameras. I honestly feel like once you get used to it you won’t even notice it. Unless you change to a prime lens and then you’ll be shocked at the weight difference. I completely forget how heavy it is.

Price Tag

This is an investment lens—no doubt about it. But if you’re considering upgrading multiple primes, this might be a more cost-effective long-term solution. I ended up selling my old prime lenses to lessen the cost of getting this one.

No Image Stabilization

While the lens doesn’t have built-in IS, Canon’s mirrorless bodies offer excellent IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilization), which helps compensate. This isn’t something that is a big deal to me but I know some gear heads really like their built-in IS.

Who Should Consider the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.0L?

Portrait & Lifestyle Photographers: If you shoot families, newborns, or even branding sessions, this lens has your back. You can get all the moments and not sacrifice the quality we all love about our primes.

Wedding Photographers: If you’ve got a strong wrist and hate swapping lenses this one should definitely be in your camera bag. Being able to go from a wide shot to a close-up in the fast paced wedding world is a godsend!

Photographers Looking to Simplify Their Kit: For me this was a huge reason I upgraded. Making that switch from mirrorless and having to deal with the adapter for my old lenses it was just getting too complicated. I haven’t touched my back-up lens at a session in over a year at least.

Investing in new gear can be both exciting and overwhelming—especially when every photographer seems to have a different “must-have” recommendation. The truth is, the best gear isn’t about what’s the most expensive or trendy; it’s about what fits your shooting style, workflow, and needs. Before clicking “Add to Cart,” ask yourself these key questions:

• What problem am I trying to solve? Are you struggling with low-light conditions? Missing shots because of slow focusing? Wishing for more versatility? The right gear should address a specific pain point in your workflow.
• Will this gear actually improve my work? Just because a lens is highly rated doesn’t mean it will make a noticeable difference in your images. Think about whether the upgrade will enhance your style or just be a shiny new toy. (For me not swapping lenses over and over let me be more present with my clients.)
• How often will I really use this? A specialty lens might be incredible, but if it’ll only come out of your bag twice a year, it may not be the best investment. Prioritize gear that will impact your daily or weekly workflow. (Hello Lensbaby Composer I NEVER even used!!!)
• Does this gear fit my budget and business goals? Investing in quality equipment is important, but it should make financial sense for your business. If it won’t directly help you make more money or save time, consider whether it’s worth the price.

Rent Before You Buy – Many camera stores and online rental services (like LensRentals or BorrowLenses) let you try gear before committing. A weekend rental can tell you more than a thousand reviews.

Read Reviews from Photographers Who Shoot Like You – Not all reviews are created equal. A landscape photographer’s opinion on a lens won’t help much if you shoot newborns. Look for feedback from photographers in your niche.

Test In-Store If Possible – If you can, visit a local camera store and hold the gear. Feel the weight, test the focus, and see if it works intuitively with your shooting style.

Buy Used or Refurbished – If you’re on the fence about a pricey lens, consider a used or factory-refurbished version. Many reputable stores offer gently used gear at a fraction of the price.

Wait for Sales & Trade-In Deals – Major brands run discounts throughout the year, and trade-in programs can help you upgrade for less. If you’re eyeing a new piece of gear, timing your purchase right can save you hundreds. I’ve traded in several lenses over the years and you always get a bit more when you are making a purchase at the same time.

My Final Thoughts on the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.0L

If I had to describe this lens in one word? Obsessed. Seriously I never use my 50 1.2L anymore which kind of makes me sad.

The Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.0L is the lens I didn’t know I needed—until I used it. Now, I can’t imagine shooting without it. It’s like having four prime lenses rolled into one, with the added bonus of never having to scramble to swap glass mid-session.

Is it heavy? Absolutely. Do I still carry it everywhere? 100%.

Sure, it’s an investment (both financially and in arm strength), but for the way it simplifies my workflow and delivers buttery bokeh and tack-sharp images, it’s completely worth it. If you’re tired of juggling multiple lenses or just want one lens that can truly do it all, the 28-70mm f/2.0L might just be your new best friend.

Would I recommend it? Without hesitation. Your back might hate you, but your photos will thank you.

Let me start this by saying I’m so sorry I even have to write a blog post about DIY hospital newborn photos. As a recent new mom I loved my Fresh 48 photos in the hospital and I hate that so many new moms don’t even get a choice in the matter right now due to Covid-19. I realize that hospital newborn photos are the least of new mom’s worries right now but I thought as a professional photographer for the last 13 years I could offer a few suggestions just in case.

What to Pack for DIY Hospital Newborn Photos

So let’s start before you get to the hospital and are packing your go-bag. Planning ahead of time will give you more options later I always say. If I was packing my hospital bag right now this is what I’d put in there when it comes to photos.

• A cute robe! Let’s be real, under that robe is a nursing bra/ tank top and leggings because comfort is key. But throw a cute robe over the top and you look cute and put together! I love these matching robes and swaddle blankets!
• A swaddle blanket for baby with either a hat or bow. You can find sets on places like Spearmint Baby or Amazon. You can also pick up muslin swaddle blankets from Target with cute patterns. (Also the hospital swaddle blankets are just find and lend a more classic look to your photos. There are no wrong choices here!)
• Letterboard sign! I love these for putting baby’s birth info on or a fun quote. The one linked is double sided and even has storage for all the letters!
• Small makeup bag for mom. This can be just mascara, eyeliner, and concealer. Just something to feel a bit more refreshed.
• Your phone and charger. You can bring a camera if you like but don’t stress yourself. Your phone is just fine for this!

How to Prep the Room

To be honest this is the most important part because any photographer will tell you the light is the most important factor in your DIY hospital newborn photos.

• Open the blinds as wide as possible to let in outside light. Some hospitals have amazing windows with tons of natural light and others have blinds in the windows and face walls. You have to work with what you’ve got here.
• Look for the time of day that you get the brightest indirect light, typically late morning. If the sun is streaming directly into your room blinding everyone that is not the light we want. Wait till it moves and you no longer see bright spots on the floor.
• Turn off the overhead lights in your room. The only caveat here is if you are delivering at a time when it is rainy and yucky and dark outside you might need to leave the overhead lights on for enough light.
• Clear the clutter! Try to clear off surfaces of things like plates, cups etc. It’s way easier to move a hospital cup in the background when taking the photo then it is to edit it out later.
• Bring the baby’s bassinet close to the window. It doesn’t have to be right next to the window but definitely not across the room either.

Phone/Camera Settings

The most important and basic tip here is to turn off the flash. Also be sure to hold steady when taking your photos and have your subject stay still. This may not work so well on a squirmy baby so if you notice motion blur from them moving you’ll need to move them closer to the window. This means that there isn’t enough light.

Another tip with iphones is to tap the screen where you want the focus to be. You will notice a sun and a box come up. If you tap the sun and slide your finger up or down you can adjust the exposure.

If you have portrait mode on your phone now is a great time to play with it! This can help with blurring out a messy hospital room.

DIY Hospital Newborn Photos to Take

When doing your own DIY hospital newborn photos put down the Pinterest board and give yourself grace. I’m not saying to not be inspired but don’t beat yourself up if yours don’t look like what you see on Pinterest. Remember when I show up to take your photos I’m bringing 15+ years of experience plus 10k worth of equipment. I don’t hold myself to the same standards when I cook dinner at home to what a chef can make in a restaurant and you shouldn’t either!

So let’s keep this list short and easy!

• Overhead photo of baby in clear hospital bassinet
• Add the letterboard sign in for a few cute shots too
• Move around this setup and get some close-ups and then some pulled back
• Try different angles, you’d be surprised how changing your angle can take a photo from ordinary to amazing!
• Unwrap the swaddle with baby in the bassinet and get those photos of fingers and toes
• Get another overhead shot and photos with the letterboard

This will give you a good variety of photos in a short amount of time. Next up have dad or your support person use your phone to take photos of you with baby.

• Mom holding baby, sitting in hospital bed facing window
• Mom looking at baby, looking at the camera. Smile of course!
• Have mom give the baby a kiss or just cuddle close.
• Again get some close-up and then far away, try out different angles
• Stand near the window and get some photos holding the baby
• Repeat all this with Dad or your support person holding the baby too

Personally I would ask your nurse if she minds taking a quick photo of you and your SO with the baby. I can’t guarantee they will have time but my guess is during these extraordinary times they will be happy to take a quick photo for you!

Editing on Your Phone

I highly recommend the Lightroom app for editing your DIY hospital newborn photos. It is available in the app store from Adobe the makers of Photoshop. A little secret you might not know is that most photographers use Lightroom on their computers to edit your photos not Photoshop! I rarely take an image into Photoshop for editing, 99% of my work is done in Lightroom. There are tons of tutorials on Youtube on how to use Lightroom so I’ll let you search that out yourself. Plus you can find presets that will help with doing the editing for you. Similar to Instagram filters. Again there are too many to name but I like Noble presets and Refined presets for mobile. *2025 update – My new fav preset is the AJ Mobile Preset Pack!

Looking back now, I really regret not having them done, especially a lifestyle session at home that would have worked perfectly with the winter season and better suited my style. I have a few casual photos here and there, but nothing that truly captures that special time before my children arrived. Don’t make the same mistake I did!
